Mobile Produce Pantry Friday at Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank

A stolen car has been returned to its owner, thanks to a traffic stop Friday night in north Salina.

According to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester, a patrol officer saw that a gray 2012 Ford Focus turning left onto North 12th Street from North Broadway Boulevard had tail lights that weren't working. He attempted to stop the vehicle, but it went north on North 12th Street, west on Pacific Avenue, and north on North 13th Street before pulling into the trailer park at 917 North 13th, Forrester said.

Once the car stopped, a Hispanic male exited the driver's seat and fled on foot, Forrester said. A female passenger in the vehicle, Angela Rowe, 36, of Salina, was found to have an outstanding warrant out of Sedgwick County and was arrested, he said. While she was being searched, a meth pipe was found, so she also was arrested on suspicion of possession of a stimulant and possession of drug paraphernalia, Forrester said.

The Focus was registered to Ryan Forsberg, 43, of Salina, he said. When officers contacted Forsberg, he reported that his car had been missing for about an hour, since shortly after Rowe and the Hispanic male left his room at the Ambassy Motel, 217 South Broadway Boulevard, Forrester said. Forsberg's keys had been on the table, but he noticed they were gone after the two people had left his room, Forrester added.

According to Forrester, the car was not damaged and has been returned to Forsberg.

The search for the Hispanic male driver continues, he added.

Stolen car recovered, thanks to traffic stop Friday night

A Salina man was arrested on suspicion of arson and theft after an early Friday morning car fire in the Walmart parking lot.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a Walmart employee arriving for work at 7:25 a.m. Friday observed a black male getting into and out of a blue 2007 Honda Accord. Shortly after the male walked away from the car, the employee saw flames coming from inside the car, he said.

According to Forrester, the Salina Fire Department determined that an accelerant was used to start the fire in the front seat of the car. Surveillance video showed the black male walking out of Walmart with the accelerant without paying for it and then walking to the car, he said.

At 8 p.m Friday, officers were sent to the Salina Rescue Mission, 1716 Summers Road, where a person fitting the description of the subject in the car fire case was seen, Forrester said. Delanio Adams, 35, of Salina, was arrested on suspicion of arson and theft, Forrester said. 

Although Adams claimed the Accord was his, Forrester said it was registered to Poitr Zdanevich, 35, of Minnesota, and had not been reported stolen. The car was valued at $10,000, he added.

The First Amendment enacted in 1791 clearly states that “Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof....” Thomas Jefferson stated this clause was to establish a “wall of separation between church and state.” In 1947, the U.S. Supreme Court reinforced that the government must remain neutral toward religion. That includes public schools as state agencies.

In 2003, the Bush administration clarified how these rulings affected school operations, explaining: “[T]eachers and other public school officials ... may not lead their classes in prayer, devotional readings from the Bible, or other religious activities, nor may school officials use their authority to attempt to persuade or compel students to participate in prayer or other religious activities.”

In response to this January announcement, Daniel Mach, who directs the ACLU Program on Freedom of Religion and Belief, stated: “Despite the president’s hype, there’s very little that’s new in today’s ‘school prayer’ guidance. Importantly, both the Bush guidance and the copycat document released today affirm a core constitutional protection: School officials are prohibited from imposing their faith on students.”

Since it is solidly established that there will be no school-sponsored prayer, the other strategy is to divert federal and state monies to religious schools. The U.S. Supreme Court has just heard the&nbsp;Espinoza v. MontanaDepartment of Revenue&nbsp;case. The Montana legislature created a program in 2015 to provide a tax credit to those who donate to scholarships for students to attend private schools.&nbsp; But the Montana Department of Revenue ruled against using the scholarships for religious schools. That was just appealed to the Supreme Court. Their ruling, due next June, could open a crack in the separation of church and state, and begin the diversion of funds from public to religious schools.

Advocates for blurring this separation should keep in mind that such actions would also open up public funding of Muslim schools, Hindu schools, etc.&nbsp;

Education Frontlines: In public schools, church, state separate

TOPEKA – A concerning number of Washington state drivers involved in fatal crashes are testing positive for recent use of marijuana, according to new research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

The share of drivers who, after a fatal crash, tested positive for active THC – the drug’s main psychoactive ingredient – has doubled since the state legalized marijuana in December 2012. AAA believes the increase raises important traffic safety concerns for drivers across the country, because recreational marijuana use is now legal in 11 states and Washington, D.C.

The latest AAA Foundation research found that between 2008 and 2012 – the five-year period before the drug was legal – an estimated 8.8% of Washington drivers involved in fatal crashes were positive for THC. That rate rose to 18% between 2013 and 2017.

The average number of THC-positive drivers increased, too. In the five years before legalization, an average of 56 drivers involved in fatal crashes each year were THC-positive. In the five years after legalization, the average jumped to 130. The new numbers bolster the findings of a similar report the AAA Foundation released in 2016. The study did not attempt to determine if marijuana contributed to the crashes included in its latest research. It focused only on the prevalence of drivers who tested positive for active THC.

“This study enabled us to review a full 10-years’ worth of data about the potential impact of marijuana on driving safety – and it raises significant concerns,” said Dr. David Yang, executive director of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “Results from the analysis suggest that legalization of recreational use of marijuana may increase the rate of THC-positive drivers involved in fatal crashes.”

Marijuana use can inhibit concentration, slow reaction times and cloud judgment. Its effects vary by individual, but a number of studies have concluded that marijuana use impairs the ability to drive safely. Previous research suggests that users who drive high are up to twice as likely to be involved in a crash.

AAA opposes the legalization of marijuana for recreational use because of its inherent traffic safety risks and because of the difficulties in writing legislation that protects the public and treats drivers fairly.

Eleven states and Washington, D.C. have legalized marijuana for both recreational and medical use. Another 22 states have legalized it for medical use only. State legislative sessions for 2020 are getting underway and recreational use is expected to be a popular topic. The legislative interest combined with likely November ballot measures could result in additional states taking a hard look the issue.

In an attempt to curtail drug-impaired driving, seven states have set legal non-zero, or “per se,” limits on the amount of THC drivers can have in their system. While well-intended, AAA believes imposing such limits is problematic because no data reliably shows what level of THC impairs driving, the chemical’s effects vary by user, and THC testing often cannot be done until hours after a crash.

AAA believes that states that have legalized the drug should not rely solely on an arbitrary legal limit to determine if a driver is impaired. They should adopt a two-pronged approach that requires:

behavioral and physiological evidence of driver impairment

Regardless of the drug’s legal status – and limits in any state – all motorists need to avoid driving while impaired.“Simply put, if you’ve used marijuana, don’t drive,” said Jake Nelson, AAA’s director of traffic safety advocacy and research. “And if you plan to drive, don’t use marijuana.”

Last year, a Foundation survey found that nearly 70% of Americans think it’s unlikely a driver will get caught by police for driving shortly after using marijuana. The survey also revealed that an estimated 14.8 million drivers report getting behind the wheel within one hour after using marijuana in the past 30 days.

AAA is committed to educating the public about the risks of substance-impaired driving. Through AAA Foundation research, AAA is working to improve understanding on the topic and is working collaboratively with safety stakeholders to reduce the impact of substance-impaired driving related crashes.

TOPEKA — The new Medicaid expansion bill, the product of a <a href="https://www.kcur.org/post/kansas-paves-medicaid-expansion-path-after-governor-and-top-republican-break-partisan-logjam" target="_blank">compromise</a>
 between Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly and some Republican leaders, would 
change how state prisons and county jails fund health care for 
prisoners.

By expanding the types of people who can qualify for 
the program, the bill would extend Medicaid access to 80% to 90% of 
state prisoners if it passes, according to the Kansas Department of 
Corrections

Kansas is one of only <a href="https://www.kff.org/medicaid/state-indicator/states-reporting-corrections-related-medicaid-enrollment-policies-in-place-for-prisons-or-jails/?currentTimeframe=0&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D" target="_blank">seven U.S. states</a>
 that kicks people off of Medicaid when they go to prison or jail. The 
one exception is when an inmate is hospitalized for more than 24 hours. 
The DOC or county jails can apply for Medicaid funding to cover part of 
the cost if the inmate is eligible for the government health care plan.

Right
 now, state prison officials say, less than 1% of Kansas state prisoners
 — fewer than 100 people — qualify for Medicaid based on the state’s <a href="http://www.kdheks.gov/hcf/Medicaid/eligibility_guidelines.html" target="_blank">restrictions</a>
 on age, income, disability status and family status. The department 
doesn’t collect data on how many people in county jails qualify.

The
 new bill would allow the DOC to take advantage of Medicaid funding for 
more inmates. It also increases the share of state Medicaid costs that 
the federal government would pay.

“It revolves around those current income requirements,” DOC spokeswoman Rebecca Witte said. “They would be eligible.”

She said the department would save $2 million in 2022 if Medicaid expansion is passed.

County
 jails also would see savings, said Jeffrey Easter, Sedgwick County 
sheriff and legislative chair for the Kansas Sheriffs’ Association. 
Sedgwick County spent about $1 million in 2018 on hospitalized inmates.

He said if the bill passes, “that million dollars wouldn’t be coming out of my budget and local taxpayer money.”

Data
 collected by the Kansas Sheriffs’ Association shows most county jails —
 excluding Sedgwick, Wyandotte, Johnson and Shawnee counties — spent a 
total of $6 million in 2018 on outside hospitalizations for inmates.

That
 year, Shawnee County spent $770,000 on offsite medical treatment for 
jail inmates, but it didn’t have information on how much of that went to
 hospitalizations. A spokesman for the county Department of Corrections 
said the county does not apply for Medicaid coverage for any inmates.

Wyandotte
 and Johnson counties did not immediately respond to a request for 
information on how much their jails spent on hospitalizations in 2018.

The
 Medicaid expansion bill would also require the Department of 
Corrections to help counties get jail inmates back on Medicaid after 
their release.

Even people who go to jail for two weeks are 
kicked off the program and they don’t get back on Medicaid for three or 
four weeks after release, Easter said. For some people with mental 
illnesses, it can turn into a cycle.

“For them to get any type of
 plan or medications, they’ve got to be back on Medicaid,” Easter said. 
“You see them decline, rearrested, and we (start) the process over 
again.”

Currently, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, which runs the state’s Medicaid program, <a href="https://www.kcur.org/sites/kcur/files/202001/KDHEPDF.pdf" target="_blank">contracts</a>
 with a company called Appriss to collect a daily list of people 
entering and leaving county jails. The department checks the list 
against its Medicaid database and terminates coverage until a person is 
released.

On the state level, the DOC sends KDHE a monthly list 
of people in its prisons. The list is checked against the state Medicaid
 database and KASPER, the database of state prisoners, to determine 
whose Medicaid will be terminated.

Before people are released, a 
special unit in the DOC processes applications for people going back on 
Medicaid. The Medicaid expansion bill would require the DOC to assist 
county jails with this process.

For county and state governments, the biggest effect of <a href="https://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/issue-briefs/2016/08/how-and-when-medicaid-covers-people-under-correctional-supervision" target="_blank">terminating Medicaid coverage</a>
 for incarcerated people is the time and resources needed to take people
 on and off, said Maria Schiff, a criminal justice and health care 
researcher for the nonprofit Pew Charitable Trusts.

“Generating a new application is more work,” she said, “than activating a suspended one.”

But
 the most dramatic impact, Schiff said, is for the people who lose their
 coverage. Once they’re released, they can struggle with navigating the 
health care system, especially if they’ve been incarcerated for many 
years.

Most states that have expanded Medicaid employ re-entry 
counselors in prisons and jails who help people reapply for Medicaid 
before they’re released, Schiff said.

“A person in a state prison
 doesn’t have the tools and internet connection and information and 
access to legal forms that individuals on the outside have,” she said.

Proponents
 of Medicaid expansion have argued the policy will reduce recidivism. 
But it’s too early for researchers to know, Schiff said. Rhode Island, 
however, has seen a drop in substance abuse-related fatalities among the
 recently released.

“It’s not the coverage alone. Because you 
don’t want these people just showing up in emergency departments,” she 
said. “You really want them getting attached to a primary care system.”

How Medicaid expansion would change health care in Kan. prisons

HUTCHINSON — It’s time to brush up on your “Country Grammar” — hip-hop rapper Nelly is coming to the Kansas State Fair.

The three-time Grammy award winner will perform at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Nex-Tech Wireless Grandstand. Opening for Nelly is rising star Willie Jones.&nbsp;

Tickets go on sale at 8 a.m. Feb. 7. The Fair’s ticket office will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. that day to accommodate walk-in traffic and phone calls. “We are excited to add another concert to our already strong lineup, especially one in a genre we haven’t normally offered at the Kansas State Fair,” said the Fair’s General Manager Robin Jennison. “Nelly is obviously one of the top-selling rappers in history. However, he also has a wide appeal among many demographics, thanks to his success collaborating with country group Florida Georgia Line.”

Nelly, a diamond-selling, multi-platinum artist, entrepreneur, philanthropist and actor, has sold more than 22 million albums, ranking him as one of the best-selling rap artists in America. Nelly burst onto the scene in the early 2000s with songs such as “Ride Wit Me,” “Hot in Herre,” “Air Force Ones” and “Country Grammar,” which will celebrate its 20th anniversary in June.&nbsp;

Other hits include “Shake Ya Tailfeather,” “Dilemma,” “Over and Over” featuring Tim McGraw and “Just a Dream.”

Both Nelly’s Country Grammar album and his collaboration on Florida Georgia Line’s single “Cruise” achieved diamond status. “Cruise” is one of 35 singles — and only two country songs — to reach diamond certification. Nelly is just one of about 15 rappers to achieve this honor.

Up-and-coming star Willie Jones blends his country roots with R&amp;B and hip-hop influences. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Jones began singing gospel at an early age and was a finalist on X-Factor in 2012.

His recent singles include “Whole Lotta Love," “Bachelorettes on Broadway” and “Down For it.” Jones already has amassed more than a million monthly listeners on Spotify. A proclamation, the census, sculpture, a response from the attorney general, and two executive sessions are on the Salina City Commission agenda for Monday.

Commissioners are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Monday in room 107B of the City-County Building with a study session. The topic of the study session is the Lower Smoky Hill Water Supply Access District board meeting and 2019 year end financial update. A time for public comment is scheduled for 3:45 p.m.

The regular meeting is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. in room 107 of the City-County Building. A time for public comment is scheduled near the beginning of the meeting.

Commissioners are scheduled to hear a request to proclaim February 2020 as Black History Month in the City of Salina. According to the meeting agenda, Ras-Janelle Edwards will read the proclamation.

Additionally, commissioners are scheduled to review a letter from Lisa Mendoza, state assistant attorney general, about the commission's self-reporting of a Kansas Open Meetings Act (KOMA) violation in connection to a Sept. 16, 2019, joint meeting with Saline County concerning the proposed expo center lease. At the time the meeting was set up, it was determined that city officials would be in attendance to hear what county officials had to say about the proposed lease, therefore, the county would be responsible for preparing the agenda. It was determined later that regardless of who prepared the agenda, the city still had an obligation to notify persons who had previously asked to be notified of meetings involving city commissioners.

In response to the recognition of the KOMA violation, the city set up with the state attorney general's office a KOMA training that was attended by commissioners and city employees.

In her letter to Greg Bengtson, city counsel, Mendoza wrote, "The failure to provide notice on this occasion does not appear to be the result of any concerted effort by staff or commissioners to avoid or evade the requirements of the KOMA, but rather as a result of human error. Although the remedial actions show good faith efforts to comply with both the spirit and intention of the KOMA, ultimately they cannot erase the commission's failure to provide notice for the September 16, 2019, joint meeting...Because the commission has readily admitted its failure to provide notice and has taken remedial measures designed to ensure this situation will not reoccur in the futures, we decline to pursue any futher enforcement action to resolve this KOMA violation. This decision is based, in large measure, on the commission's self-report and prompt remedial action, as well as the remedy sought by the individual who also reported the commission's violation to this office."

Although the remedial actions show good faith efforts to comply with both the spirit and intention of the KOMA, ultimately they cannot erase the commission's failure to provide notice for the September 16, 2019, joint meeting...Because the commission has readily admitted its failure to provide notice and has taken remedial measures designed to ensure this situation will not reoccur in the futures, we decline to pursue any futher enforcement action to resolve this KOMA violation. The Salina Area United Way Board of Directors has hired Claire Mullen as the agency's new executive director.

Mullen holds a Bachelor of General Studies degree from Fort Hays State University with a minor in business communications and psychology. She is a Lean Green Belt, Leadership Salina graduate and mentor, on the Accessibility Advisory Board for City of Salina and a member of Rotary.

Mullen previously was the director of mobility Management at OCCK Transportation. Prior to OCCK Transportation, Mullen was employed by In The Bag Cleaners and Alliance Monitoring Technologies, L.L.C., both in Wichita.

“Claire has consistently demonstrated leadership and effective communication with her past work experience. She brings expertise in drafting and implementing marketing plans and has experience in fundraising and grant writing,” said Amy Schreiner, Salina Area United Way Board President. “Claire is passionate about our community and energetic to make a difference - which aligns perfectly with Salina Area United Way’s mission.”

A Super Bowl tip from Troop C

CONCORDIA -- High school students from area high schools will perform at the 50th annual Youth for Music event on Saturday.

The concert, which is co-sponsored by Cloud County Community College’s Music Department and Tom’s Music House, will be at 6 p.m. at the Brown Grand Theatre, downtown Concordia. The concert is free and open to the public.

Students from Hoisington, Logan, Phillipsburg, Pike Valley, Republic County, Rock Hills, Russell, Stockton, Thunder Ridge, Wakefield, Washington County will be participating. Membership in the ensembles is determined by the recommendations of high school teachers.

The band conductors will be William Schick, director emeritus of instrumental music at Phillipsburg High School and Renata Knox, adjunct music instructor at Cloud County Community College. Conductors for the choir will be Christopher Langsford, Cloud County music instructor, and Landon Slipke, director of vocal music at Concordia Jr.-Sr. High School.

Band students will practice all day on Saturday at the Brown Grand, while the choir participants will rehearse at Cloud County Community College. The public is also invited to attend rehearsals at no charge.

High school students to perform at Youth for Music

“Getting it right” is one reliable defense for a free press in today’s media world against critics who often base objections and critiques more on political differences than factual error.

However, criticism for getting it wrong is fair game for press skeptics — with “wrong” covering a multitude of alleged sins, as occurred following the Jan. 26 deaths of NBA superstar Kobe Bryant, his daughter and seven others in a helicopter crash.

Even though many times the news outlets themselves quickly corrected errors or apologized, those moves often fell short of placating many on social media.

The BBC apologized quickly Sunday for using video of NBA star LeBron James during a segment on Bryant’s death — a mistake the harkened to an old racist saw that to whites, all black people “look alike.”

The BBC’s quick apology: “In tonight’s coverage of the death of Kobe Bryant on #BBCNewsTen, we mistakenly used pictures of LeBron James in one section of the report,” BBC Editor Paul Royall tweeted hours later. “We apologize for this human error, which fell below our usual standards.”

A slew of online critics — some starting an online petition calling for resignation — have questioned the sincerity of an MSNBC anchor’s apology Sunday after she appeared to use the n-word when reporting on Bryant’s death. Alison Morris later posted on Twitter: “Earlier today, while reporting on the tragic news of Kobe Bryant’s passing, I unfortunately stuttered on air, combining the names of the Knicks and the Lakers to say ‘Nakers.’” Please know I did not &amp; would NEVER use a racist term. I apologize for the confusion this caused.”

Gossip site TMZ was the first to report Bryant’s death. Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva later said, “It would be extremely disrespectful to understand that your loved one … perished and you learn about it from TMZ.” Los Angeles County Undersheriff Tim Murakami ‏tweeted that he understood the pressures related to “… getting the scoop, but please allow us time to make personal notifications to their loved ones. It’s very cold to hear of the loss via media.”

Less clear is why&nbsp;The Washington Post&nbsp;placed a national political reporter, Felicia Sonmez, on administrative leave Monday — only to reverse the action Tuesday — because of tweets that began with a link to a 2016 Daily Beast story titled, “Kobe Bryant’s Disturbing Rape Case: The DNA Evidence, the Accuser’s Story and the Half-Confession.”

It is unclear whether the&nbsp;Post’s initial action was in response to many online critics who called the tweet “insensitive” — some issuing death threats, Sonmez said — or because one of her tweets on the subject included a screen shot of her work email inbox, showing the names of critics.

By Tuesday, newsroom colleagues were rallying around Sonmez and&nbsp;Post&nbsp;columnist Erik Wemple wrote that the newspaper’s concerns, per an email from management to Sonmez, were that “‘they didn’t ‘pertain’ to the reporter’s ‘coverage area’” and that “your behavior on social media is making it harder for others to do their work as&nbsp;Washington Post&nbsp;journalists.’” In the same column, Sonmez was quoted as saying she was never told the suspension involved the screen grab of her work email box.

Wemple raised questions about the action, noting that “if journalists at the&nbsp;Post&nbsp;are prone to suspension for tweeting stories off their beats, the entire newsroom should be on administrative leave.”

On Tuesday evening, “After conducting an internal review, we have determined that, while we consider Felicia’s tweets ill-timed, she was not in clear and direct violation of our social media policy,” Tracy Grant, managing editor of the&nbsp;Post, said in a statement.

Several news outlets drew a line from an early Fox News report with the incorrect number of those who died to a President Trump tweet repeating the error. ABC News on Wednesday suspended correspondent Matt Gutman after he erroneously reported on Sunday that all four of Bryant’s daughters were on the helicopter that crashed. Gutman, who also reported strong criticism on social media, apologized: “We are in the business of holding people accountable, and I hold myself accountable for a terrible mistake, which I deeply regret.”

A common factor here is the desire for a speedy post, reaction or comment, seemingly based on an assumption that readers and viewers and listeners care most about hearing news and seeing reactions “now.” But what about the values of accuracy, deliberation and thoroughness in an era in which much of the nation considers the news media unreliable, if not deliberately manipulative and unduly provocative?

Yes, many major news operations got it right — by waiting for information to be verified. The&nbsp;Los Angeles Times&nbsp;at least took the intermediate approach of acknowledging online the early accounts of Bryant’s death and advising its readers it still was investigating those reports.

Sonmez’s incident is a more challenging call — for the&nbsp;Post, for the public and for a free press generally. Certainly, there is the longstanding social pressure and even journalistic guidelines to avoid sensationalism and inflicting undue pain — that seems to lean toward avoiding disparaging news of a person immediately after his/her death.

But then, to ignore a woman’s allegation and resulting legal action in the #MeToo era (or anytime) likely would have resulted in legitimate complaints that journalists were channeling gender bias and hero worship and sanitizing a life. For the record, criminal charges against Bryan were dropped and a civil lawsuit settled out of court.

There is not one&nbsp;perfect&nbsp;way to gather or report news. The tasks are too complex and dependent on facts of each instance to produce cookie-cutter rules. And to large degree, the First Amendment rules out the enforceable codes of conduct that govern professions such as law and medicine.

But having been a young reporter at one time whose on-deadline job all too often was to collect a photo and interview family members of a recently deceased newsworthy person, I know there is a&nbsp;better&nbsp;way, with sensitivity, honesty and an emphasis on getting things right the first time, even when giving audiences an accurate news account.

Those terms — sensitivity, honesty, getting it right and accurate — are not in the First Amendment’s 45 words, to be sure. But that doesn’t mean those values aren’t as real or applicable to how a free press should operate.

It’s very cold to hear of the loss via media.”Less clear is why&nbsp;The Washington Post&nbsp;placed a national political reporter, Felicia Sonmez, on administrative leave Monday — only to reverse the action Tuesday — because of tweets that began with a link to a 2016 Daily Beast story titled, “Kobe Bryant’s Disturbing Rape Case: The DNA Evidence, the Accuser’s Story and the Half-Confession.”It is unclear whether the&nbsp;Post’s initial action was in response to many online critics who called the tweet “insensitive” — some issuing death threats, Sonmez said — or because one of her tweets on the subject included a screen shot of her work email inbox, showing the names of critics.By Tuesday, newsroom colleagues were rallying around Sonmez and&nbsp;Post&nbsp;columnist Erik Wemple wrote that the newspaper’s concerns, per an email from management to Sonmez, were that “‘they didn’t ‘pertain’ to the reporter’s ‘coverage area’” and that “your behavior on social media is making it harder for others to do their work as&nbsp;Washington Post&nbsp;journalists.’” In the same column, Sonmez was quoted as saying she was never told the suspension involved the screen grab of her work email box.Wemple raised questions about the action, noting that “if journalists at the&nbsp;Post&nbsp;are prone to suspension for tweeting stories off their beats, the entire newsroom should be on administrative leave.”On Tuesday evening, “After conducting an internal review, we have determined that, while we consider Felicia’s tweets ill-timed, she was not in clear and direct violation of our social media policy,” Tracy Grant, managing editor of the&nbsp;Post, said in a statement.Several news outlets drew a line from an early Fox News report with the incorrect number of those who died to a President Trump tweet repeating the error. ABC News on Wednesday suspended correspondent Matt Gutman after he erroneously reported on Sunday that all four of Bryant’s daughters were on the helicopter that crashed. Gutman, who also reported strong criticism on social media, apologized: “We are in the business of holding people accountable, and I hold myself accountable for a terrible mistake, which I deeply regret.”A common factor here is the desire for a speedy post, reaction or comment, seemingly based on an assumption that readers and viewers and listeners care most about hearing news and seeing reactions “now.” But what about the values of accuracy, deliberation and thoroughness in an era in which much of the nation considers the news media unreliable, if not deliberately manipulative and unduly provocative?Yes, many major news operations got it right — by waiting for information to be verified. The&nbsp;Los Angeles Times&nbsp;at least took the intermediate approach of acknowledging online the early accounts of Bryant’s death and advising its readers it still was investigating those reports.Sonmez’s incident is a more challenging call — for the&nbsp;Post, for the public and for a free press generally. Certainly, there is the longstanding social pressure and even journalistic guidelines to avoid sensationalism and inflicting undue pain — that seems to lean toward avoiding disparaging news of a person immediately after his/her death.But then, to ignore a woman’s allegation and resulting legal action in the #MeToo era (or anytime) likely would have resulted in legitimate complaints that journalists were channeling gender bias and hero worship and sanitizing a life. For the record, criminal charges against Bryan were dropped and a civil lawsuit settled out of court.There is not one&nbsp;perfect&nbsp;way to gather or report news. The tasks are too complex and dependent on facts of each instance to produce cookie-cutter rules. And to large degree, the First Amendment rules out the enforceable codes of conduct that govern professions such as law and medicine.But having been a young reporter at one time whose on-deadline job all too often was to collect a photo and interview family members of a recently deceased newsworthy person, I know there is a&nbsp;better&nbsp;way, with sensitivity, honesty and an emphasis on getting things right the first time, even when giving audiences an accurate news account.Those terms — sensitivity, honesty, getting it right and accurate — are not in the First Amendment’s 45 words, to be sure. They’ll discuss what’s known about the petroglyphs and what the carvings can tell us about the early people of Kansas.Rex Buchanan is director emeritus of the KS Geological Survey, an editor, author, and presenter. Burke Griggs is a fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment, associate professor, author, and scholar. Josh Svaty is a fifth-generation farmer, former KS secretary of agriculture and is actively engaged in natural resource issues. All three will be happy to sign copies of their book after the presentation.The Smoky Hill Museum is a nationally accredited history museum, in the heart of downtown Salina.
