The Saline County Road and Bridge Department has announced the reopening of two sections of roads that had been closed to traffic.

Lightville Road between Crawford Street and Carmony Road has been opened to traffic.

A stolen SUV was returned to its owner after an officer located it in another part of the city Tuesday.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that Daniel Hess, 57, of Salina, reported that sometime between 7 p.m. Monday and 7 a.m. Tuesday, someone stole his 2006 Ford Freestyle from the driveway of his residence in the 600 block of Pheasant Lane. Hess told police that he still had both sets of keys in his possession, Forrester said.

Later on Tuesday, a patrol officer located the SUV, which was backed into a parking stall at the Heritage at Hawthorne apartment complex, 715 North Ninth Street, Forrester said. The SUV did not appear to be damaged and nothing appeared to be missing from it, he added. The SUV was returned to Hess, he said.

According to Forrester, police are looking for surveillance video in the area that might provide a clue as to who stole the SUV.

Two people from the Kansas City area were transported to Salina Regional Health Center (SRHC) after a box truck went off the road east of Salina Tuesday afternoon.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that emergency responders were dispatched at 1:12 p.m. Tuesday to South Simpson Road, approximately 0.3 of a mile north of East Magnolia Road, where a white, 2019 HINO box truck belonging to MHC Truck Leasing had gone off the road and into a wheat field. 

The driver, Delmas Williams, 44, of Lenexa, told deputies that the truck was southbound on South Simpson Road when it caught a gust of wind and went off the west side of the road into a wheat field, Soldan said. The truck was loaded with electronics and furniture, he added.

Williams and a passenger, Mason Lockamy, 20, of Kansas City, Mo., were transported by Salina EMS to SRHC with minor injuries, Soldan said. 

The truck was towed from the scene, he added.

She told police that after the male left, she couldn't find her cellphone and thought she had left it in her car, however when she went to look in her 2005 Saturn Vue, she discovered it was missing as well, Forrester said. Additionally, her wallet was missing, he said.

The dark gray Vue, valued at $1,700, has a Kansas license tag of 989 GPF, Forrester said. The suspect is described as being a white male approximately 35 years of age, he said.

Police looking for car stolen from west Salina

I recently overheard a deep breakfast conversation between my husband and kids regarding the TV show they were viewing. It was such a good conversation I didn’t want to interrupt the thought process, so I remained sitting in the living room, eavesdropping and trying to control my giggles. Plus, I wanted to see how my husband would handle our daughter’s questions.&nbsp;

We’ve been without cable or satellite television for a few years now, so generally, during breakfast the kids get to watch something we’ve recorded on our TiVo. While we have quite a&nbsp;diverse collection of recordings, we generally select a program from PBS like “Odd Squad,” “Molly of Denali” or “Peg Plus Cat” before school. The kids are really into science, math, and adventures, so these three shows are a pretty regular morning rotation in our home.

However, on this particular morning, the conversation centered around these people who got lost and ended up being stranded on a tropical island after a three-hour tour. Yes, my kids also love watching “Gilligan’s Island” which airs on a local television channel. We have maintained a steady viewing of the 1960s sitcom for the last few years. In fact, our son requested to have a “Gilligan’s Island” themed birthday party once. There are many days I question my parenting tactics and decisions but allowing the kids to watch “Gilligan’s Island” has never caused me to fret.

During this breakfast conversation, my 4-year-old daughter was trying to make sense of the overall storyline.

“Let me tell you, Daddy,” she began. “I’d be working on fixing the holes in that boat if I got stuck on an island. Why didn’t they try to fix the holes?”

My 7-year-old would chime in to try to defend the plot and to help her better understand.

“Isannah, they’re stranded on an island, they don’t have the tools,” Banks would point out.&nbsp;

“If they don’t have tools, then why do they live in nice huts made from bamboo and trees?” she countered.&nbsp;

Isannah then moved on to her next item, “And let me tell you something else,” she said. “I wouldn’t take the boat at night — that’s when there’s waves!” I think she was referencing the opening scene of the show when the S.S. Minnow was tossed about by waves when the weather started getting rough. It was dark.

“Isannah, there’s always waves day and night,” Banks pointed out. “It’s in the ocean.”

Clearly, as they continued this back-and-forth dialogue, both children had different perspectives related to the tale of the seven castaways.&nbsp;

All the while, my husband, Adam, would nod his head and make random sounds to ensure the kids knew he was listening to them both. But ultimately, the kids led the conversation and Adam was not needed to referee the chat.&nbsp;

Not once did either of them get upset or belittle the other’s argument. Not once did either of them start screaming at the other or call the other names. Not once did either of them get frustrated and end the conversation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While I think “Gilligan’s Island” provides entertainment for my family, it also is clearly causing my kids to think and verbalize their thoughts with one another in a civil conversation.

Perhaps we all need some little ones discussing “Gilligan’s Island” over breakfast from time to time to help remind us as adults how to interact with others who might have differing views.

After all, if the kids can model civil discourse, surely the rest of us can, too.

Insight: Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale

CLAY CENTER -- The dietary portion of patient care will be the focus of the next Future Medical Professionals program at Clay County Medical Center. 

Linda Yarrow, registered dietician, and Alice Christensen, food and nutrition services manager, will be leading students in our program on Feb. 10 at 6:30 p.m.&nbsp;Please meet in the front lobby of Clay County Medical Center, where a representative of the hospital will meet you.

They will review dietary restrictions, types of diets, and the importance of diet in the healing process. Activities will include tray set up, picking out a menu based on dietary restrictions, sampling of various types of diet, including pureed, and mechanical soft, and of course –thickened liquids! Students will also get the opportunity to set up the trays for each other and use their communication skills to orient each other to trays and meals.

Students from any area high school are welcome to join the program! The group meets on the second Monday each month at 6:30 p.m. and immerses participants in activities throughout the hospital. This organization is specifically focused on exposing high school students to different medical departments within a hospital and includes hands-on activities led by department heads. There is no fee for the program. Students under 18 years old will need a parent’s signature before their first meeting.&nbsp;

Stiefel: Michael Franti and Spearhead to perform Aug. 11

MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kansas — Nikki Heiman was 
excited to learn that the state was sending a job counselor to work with
 her son, Trenton, a high school student with Down syndrome.

But 
that excitement fizzled when Heiman learned the specialist could only 
meet with Trenton once a month — and only for 15 minutes. That’s all the
 time the counselor could squeeze into her schedule while handling a 
large caseload that forces her to shuttle between multiple counties.

“We
 were very disappointed,” Heiman said. “When you cover five counties, 
you spend so much of your workweek driving and not nearly enough 
providing services to people who need support.”

State agencies 
want Kansans with disabilities in the workforce. Even earning a modest 
wage can bring added purpose and pride to their lives, and stability. 
But landing and keeping a job, especially for people with cognitive 
challenges, can prove daunting.

To make that happen, counties 
across the state turn to the private Project Search program. The 
national program pairs disabled workers with employers and gives workers
 some of the special tools they need to keep things humming in an office
 or on a shop floor.

Genesis
 Coleman’s long legs made for an awkward fit in a chair made for someone
 half his size. But he read to the 1-year-old sitting next to him. The 
day’s book: “Teeth Are Not For Biting.”

After graduating from Derby Public Schools, Coleman signed up for a 
year-long internship at McConnell Air Force Base’s child care center 
through <a href="https://www.projectsearch.us/who-we-are/" target="_blank">Project Search</a>.

Coleman
 hopes to earn a job working with children, possibly as a teacher’s 
aide. He has autism and he’s learning at McConnell how to deal with 
kids. That includes adapting to their heightened emotions, especially 
sadness.

“I ask them what’s wrong,” Coleman said. “I sometimes 
just let them just stay with me. And, you know, just tell them it’s 
alright sometimes.”

Project Search works with <a href="https://www.sunflowerhealthplan.com/members/medicaid/resources/helpful-links/project-search.html" target="_blank">13 Kansas job sites</a>, including hospitals, universities and hotels. Instructors try to keep a light touch on supporting the interns on the job.

“We
 have high expectations because we don’t want them to fail when they get
 their full-time, paying job,” said Vicki Rierson, a Project Search 
instructor for Derby Public Schools.

Besides the work experience,
 interns spend part of their day in class. The lessons range from 
financial literacy to self-care — topics meant to help students in their
 life during and after work.

After eight years in Kansas, Project Search says 74% of its interns land jobs. Only about <a href="https://www.statedata.info/bbstates/Kansas.pdf" target="_blank">46% of working age Kansans with disabilities are employed</a>. For those with cognitive disabilities, it’s 35%.

Project
 Search helps about 100 interns a year in Kansas. The Kansas Department 
for Children and Families estimates that more than 16,000 students 16 
and older have a disability.

Kansas offers job counseling for 
students and graduates with disabilities, but the state doesn’t have 
enough counselors for everyone.

Kansas struggles to hire the counselors it needs because they can make more in other states. Counselors in <a href="https://www.indeed.com/salaries/Vocational-Rehabilitation-Counselor-Salaries,-Nebraska" target="_blank">Nebraska make $20,000</a> more than those in <a href="https://www.indeed.com/salaries/Vocational-Rehabilitation-Counselor-Salaries,-Kansas" target="_blank">Kansas</a>.

But
 the tight Kansas labor market could also make it easier to convince 
employers to hire more workers with disabilities, their advocates say. 
They say that with workers scarce, businesses can’t afford to ignore any
 job applications.

“Any employer you talk to will tell you how 
hard it is to hire good help these days,” said Rocky Nichols, head of 
the Disability Rights Center of Kansas. “Well, guess what? There are 
tons and tons of people with disabilities who have talents, who have 
abilities and skills, who are being unutilized in our Kansas economy.”

Even
 after getting hired, Kansans with disabilities still need ongoing 
support, So do their employers. Advocates say businesses need training 
in how to accommodate someone with a disability.

With just 
minimal support, like having an advocate check in at work every few 
months, 70% of workers with cognitive disabilities stay successful, said
 Craig Knutson, a policy analyst with the Kansas Council on 
Developmental Disabilities. He said that without the support, most lose 
their job after five years.

Employers may need lessons on how to 
communicate with someone who doesn’t speak. A worker with Down syndrome 
may need more supervision and direct instructions to stay on task.

And as a task changes — like a filing system going from physical to digital — more training has to happen.

Project
 Search approached Jennifer Jull-Sullivan about taking on an intern at 
her veterinary practice a few years ago. She previously had one employee
 with a disability work at Blair Doon Veterinary Hospital for about a 
decade. But the employee’s condition eventually worsened until she could
 no longer work. Jull-Sullivan eventually did take on the intern and 
eventually hired him as a kennel assistant. That’s a choice she likely 
wouldn’t have made without support before and after the internship.

“I really did feel like I’d had my hand held all the way through,” Jull-Sullivan said. “It worked very nicely.”

Kan. falls short helping HS grads with disabilities in workforce

More than $90,000 in permit fees were collected by Saline County planning and zoning and environmental health in 2019.

That's the word Saline County Commissioners got from Tim Hamilton, planning and zoning administrator. Hamilton presented his 2019 update to commissioners during the regular weekly commission meeting this morning.

Hamilton told commissioners that during 2019, a total of $90,720 in permit fees was collected. In Saline County there were 79 building permits issued, 115 septic permits issued, 93 water screenings conducted, and 37 water well permits issued, according to information provided by the county. The Environmental Health division of the department also services Ottawa, Ellsworth, and Lincoln counties, the information noted.

Additionally, commissioners discussed with County Administrator Phillip Smith-Hanes the budget process for 2021. Smith-Hanes also told commissioners that he will be working on a five-year financial projection and trends report that he plans to share with the commissioners in early March, according to the provided county information.

Commissioners also approved updates to two personnel policies. The first policy was updated to reflect the current Internal Revenue Service standard mileage rates and the second was to reflect changes to the federal mandates on the utilization of a secure database to conduct queries of commercial driver’s licenses.   

Commissioners also met in an executive session concerning economic development, according to information provided by the county.

UPDATED: NWS drops winter weather advisories for some counties

A Brookville man was injured Saturday night in a two-vehicle accident in central Salina.

According to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester, Landon Howard, 19, of Brookville, was on a 2013 Kawasaki that was stopped at the light at the intersection of West Iron Avenue and Ninth Street. Howard was in the eastbound lane on West Iron Avenue, Forrester said. 

While waiting for the light, Howard was struck at 10:20 p.m. Saturday by an eastbound 2005 Chevrolet Uplander driven by Robert Pirtle, 69, of Salina, Forrester said. Pirtle then fled the scene of the accident, Forrester said. A witness was able to give a description of Pirtle's vehicle, Forrester added.

Howard was transported to Salina Regional Health Center with a deep laceration and two fractures on his right leg, Forrester said. 

A short while later, a Saline County Sheriff's deputy spotted the Uplander at the intersection of West Ash Street and Broadway Boulevard and conducted a traffic stop, Forrester said.

According to Forrester, a DUI test was conducted on Pirtle and he was arrested on suspicion of the following.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Forrester said the Kawasaki was destroyed and the Uplander had extensive front driver's side damage.

 </figure>A Brookville man was injured Saturday night in a two-vehicle accident in central Salina.According to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester, Landon Howard, 19, of Brookville, was on a 2013 Kawasaki that was stopped at the light at the intersection of West Iron Avenue and Ninth Street. Howard was in the eastbound lane on West Iron Avenue, Forrester said. While waiting for the light, Howard was struck at 10:20 p.m. Saturday by an eastbound 2005 Chevrolet Uplander driven by Robert Pirtle, 69, of Salina, Forrester said. Pirtle then fled the scene of the accident, Forrester said. A witness was able to give a description of Pirtle's vehicle, Forrester added.Howard was transported to Salina Regional Health Center with a deep laceration and two fractures on his right leg, Forrester said. Brookville motorcyclist hurt after being hit by minivan

SALINA&nbsp; — Law enforcement authorities are investigating suspects involved in a chase and crash in Salina following an armed robbery in Newton.

At 5:45 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to an armed robbery at E-Z Trip Convenience Store, 100 S. Main in Newton, according to a social media report from police.

Two men had entered the store, armed with firearms. Multiple shots were fired in the store by at least one of the suspects. The store clerk was not injured. The suspects obtained an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing in a vehicle. Officers looked at surveillance video and determined a suspect vehicle description with a tag number. That information was given to surrounding counties and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

About an hour later, Kansas Highway Patrol in Salina located the suspect vehicle and began a pursuit. The vehicle crashed near Salina South High School, and at least one suspect fled on foot. All three individuals are now in custody.

In response to the incident, Salina USD 305 issued the following statement to all district parents/guardians at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday:

Prior to school starting today, we were alerted about police activity in close proximity to South High School. As a precaution, all exterior doors were monitored until the issue was resolved.&nbsp;

We worked closely with the Salina Police Department to ensure appropriate actions were taken. We were prepared to use our notification system when we were informed the safety issue was resolved.

Our top priority is always for the safety of our students and staff. If you have any questions, please feel free to call your school office.

SALINA —Law enforcement authorities tracked down a suspect who fled a car crash early Tuesday near Salina South High School.

Just before 7am, KHP Trooper’s attempted to stop a vehicle that crashed near the school 730 East Magnolia Road, according to Trooper Ben Gardner.

Multiple subjects were inside vehicle at the time of the crash. One&nbsp; subject ran north from the scene, away from high school.&nbsp;

Just before 8a.m., law enforcement reported they had located and placed into custody the suspect, according to Gardner.

Name of the suspect and possible charges have not been released. The KHP did not report any injuries from the crash.

ABILENE --&nbsp;Hospice of Dickinson County is looking for caring individuals who want to make a difference in the community.&nbsp;

Volunteer training for those interested in becoming a hospice volunteer has been scheduled. Anyone in Dickinson County is welcome to attend.

The class will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday and Feb. 14 at Home Health and Hospice, 1111 N. Brady, Abilene. The training is for individuals who would like to help support hospice patients and their families, and will include how the program works and how volunteers are an important part of the hospice program.

Kansas Republicans made it clear last weekend that they are making a real push to get those suburban “soccer moms” on their side, at least at the general election, while Congressional District 3 primary contestants are wondering whether they can reclaim that congressional seat from a Democrat.

It’s all in the under-the-sheets politics, a convention of Kansans who are actively involved in the party and winning elections and trying to find that issue or candidate who can make sure Republicans continue to run the state and possibly the nation.

The Olathe convention—the annual state GOP gathering rotates among the four congressional districts—drew hundreds from border to border and some who were obviously worried they might not make it home in time to watch the Super Bowl.

But the key is electing Republicans for this crowd. It’s that simple.

Everyone is after those women voters, whom Republicans have lost to Democrats in the 3rd&nbsp;District especially, but across the state. And that focus is on finding the issue or two which will have those women stop off to vote a Republican ticket after dropping the kids at school.

That District 3? The prosperous, high-density Kansas Johnson/Wyandotte and a dab of Miami counties is now held by Native American/openly LGBT Democrat U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids, D-Kan., who beat white male four-term Rep. Kevin Yoder, R-Kan., in 2018 by 8 percent, or 46,000 votes.

Do Republicans go with former Kansas Republican Party Chair Amanda Adkins, who is on leave from Cerner Corp., or former Roeland Park Mayor Adrienne Foster, whose grandparents migrated – legally, she notes – from Mexico, or less politically involved former President/CEO of the National Down Syndrome Society Sara Hart Weir?

It’s a race among women in a district that has elected Republican women in the recent past, Jan Meyers from 1985-1997, then a male Democrat, Dennis Moore, from 1999-2011.

But is race an issue here? Foster says she can bring thousands of Mexican-American votes to the GOP, especially from Wyandotte County, to turn the seat back to Republican.

It’s a race to watch for the GOP nomination, and it’s also a monitor of whether GOP voters are willing to step outside the traditional voter bloc to win back a House seat.

Also at the convention, it was nearly all anti-abortion from the lips of candidates for their party’s nomination—support for that proposed constitutional amendment that if voted out of the Kansas House this week will put that measure on the same ballot as those primary election candidates.

Is anti-abortion the key here? Are those suburban women the GOP is scrambling to collect willing on the same ballot to reject their constitutional right to make their own decision on abortion that the Kansas Supreme Court has proclaimed belongs to them and them alone, and elect candidates who want to limit that decision?

It’s the female vote that Republicans are after in most districts, and while there are many general conservative government issues that those GOP primary candidates are going to be to hawking to men and women, the vote on that proposed constitutional amendment to strike the right guaranteed to women by that “non-elected court” and handing it to elected legislators is going to be decisive in many districts.

That citizen right through the “power of the vote” to elect anti-abortion or abortion-rights lawmakers who can make laws to restrict or even prohibit abortion is surely one of the keys to many of those suburban mom Republican votes, which may define the GOP primary winners.

At the Rail: GOP pushing to pique interest of 'soccer moms'

MANHATTAN – The 64th annual K-State rodeo, which is expected to draw more than 500 contestants and 10,000 spectators, is slated for Feb. 14-16 in Kansas State University’s Weber Arena.

The&nbsp;contestants will come from 19 colleges and universities in the Central Plains region.

“Our rodeo draws one of the biggest crowds of any National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association event across the country,” said K-State rodeo coach Casy Winn. “The great attendance highlights the hard work that current and past K-State rodeo club members and team leaders put in to make this a successful showing.”
