Sheriff: Man from Salina, father survive small plane crash

OKALOOSA COUNTY, FL. — Authorities are working to determine the cause of Sunday plane crash in the panhandle of Florida.

The pilot and passenger aboard a Beech Bonanza aircraft that went down short of the Destin Executive Airport runway Sunday morning in are identified as a father and son from Kansas who were flying into the Destin area for vacation, according to a media release from the Okaloosa County Sheriff's office.

 Just after 10a.m., Jason Dougherty, 47, of Garden City and Caleb Dougherty, 22, Salina, as well as a Labrador retriever flying with them, somehow survived without a scratch after just missing a home and landing in a tree in the area of Main Street and Planet Drive 

They say the plane began experiencing engine trouble as they were coming into land, according to the sheriff's office.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the accident.
