A 38-year-old Canton man was arrested Thursday in connection to a case allegedly involving a young girl.

Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Michael Ascher said Friday that Justin Thomas Lee Ingram was arrested on suspicion of the following.

Ascher said the arrest was the result of an investigation into an incident that allegedly involved a 7- to 8-year-old girl in late 2014 to mid-2015. The alleged incident occurred in a residence in southeastern Saline County, he said. When asked why it took so long to report the alleged incident, Ascher said he believed the girl was scared and waited for a time when she felt safe to report the alleged incident.

The alleged incident came to light after a multi-person disturbance in the Salina Police Department lobby on Saturday, Ascher said. At least eight people, including Ingram, were involved in the disturbance, Ascher explained. All those involved in the disturbance were either related or at one time had been inlaws, he said. Three children all under age 14 were in the lobby at the time of the disturbance and were placed into police protective custody, Ascher said. 

Once police learned that the alleged incident occurred in southeastern Saline County, they called in Saline County Sheriff's Office personnel, he said. 

According to Ascher, the investigation is ongoing.

OCCK seeks administrative support specialist in Salina -- full-time position

The were no record highs, four record lows, and precipatation was almost 4 inches above normal according to weather information from the official National Weather Service site in Salina.

That site is located at the Salina Regional Airport.

Due to technical issues, the numbers are incomplete. No temperature or precipatation readings are available from Sept. 9 to Sept. 30.

Precipitation For 2019 35.10 inches, which was 3.60 inches above average.

Here's the precipitation total breakdown by month:

July, 1.46 inches (Although residents in southeastern Saline County will recall more than 10 inches of rain fell in the early morning hours of July 4.)

September, .34 of an inch (no data available from Sept. 9 to Sept. 30.)

Temperature There were only four days in 2019 that the high was 100 degrees or hotter. That occurred between July 17 and July 20. The hottest day in 2019 was July 17 at 105 degrees. No new record highs were established in Salina in 2019.

Only twice did the thermometer drop below zero: March 4 and March 5.  March 4 saw -3 degrees while -1 degree was recorded on March 5. Those were new records for those dates. 

Additionally, two other record lows were established in 2019. On Oct. 31, the low dropped to 13 degrees and on Nov. 12, the low was 3 degrees.

On Dec. 24, 2019, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Saline County Expo Center, located at 900 Greeley Avenue in Salina for a report of a stolen UTV. 

Sometime between Dec. 23 at 3 p.m. and Dec. 24 at 11 a.m., unknown suspect(s) broke into a storage building and stole a black, 2015 Kawasaki Mule Pro-DX. At the time it was stolen, the UTV had a new water sprayer in the back bed. 

Total loss and damage is estimated to be in excess of $17,000.

The Art Center galleries will reopen on Jan. 15 and feature two exhibitions to kick off the 2020 season. “Shattering the Void: Realms of Meaning in East Asian Art” is a collaboration between the Art Center, the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas, and Salina Arts &amp; Humanities funded by the Freeman Foundation. At noon on Jan. 15, Rachel Straughn-Navarro will be the featured Lunch &amp; Learn speaker and will discuss the "Shattering the Void" project. 

The second exhibition is “Mother Tongue, Motherhood, and Transculturalization” featuring artist Shin-Hee Chin.

Salina Art Center closed through weekend to prep for new exhibits

Kansas Wildlife, Parks and Tourism and the Kansas Horse Council are working together to offer an opportunity for people to share their favorite "Over the Ears" photos.  

Photos will be displayed at the KDWPT booth at Equifest in Salina on March 6-8, 2020. Persons attending Equifest will be able to cast their votes for their favorite photos.  

The person submitting the winning photo will receive two nights camping with any Kansas state park with a horse campground and a bag of goodies for both the horse and rider, according to a post on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/KanopolisStatePark/">Kanopolis State Park-Kansas Wildlife, Parks &amp; Tourism</a> Facebook page.

Kansas Lottery concludes another Holiday Millionaire Raffle with drawing

A 21-year-old Salina man has been arrested in connection to a case involving a 15-year-old girl.

Daniel Greer, 21, of Salina, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of the following, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said Thursday.

Aggravated indecent liberties with a child

According to Hanus, Greer allegedly touched the 15-year-old girl and deprived her of her cellphone. The incident allegedly occurred at Greer's residence in the 1000 block of East Ash between 6-8 p.m. Dec. 21, Hanus said. The girl does not live at the residence, but is an acquaintance of people who do, he said. The alleged incident was reported Tuesday by an acquaintance of the girl, Hanus added.

Within the past week, a window at Laura's Retail Liquor, 1600 East Iron, sustained $150 worth of damage and a car window in the 200 block of Yale Avenue sustained $150 worth of damage, Salina Police Detective Sergeant David Villanueva said Tuesday. 

In the most recently reported incident, a 24x18-inch double-pane window and screen were shot at a residence in the 1300 block of Indian Rock Lane sometime between Dec. 22 and Tuesday, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said. Damage was estimated at $225, he said.

In an effort to protect its patients, visitors and employees during influenza season, Salina Regional Health Center has implemented visitor restrictions effective Thursday and until further notice. 

Do not visit if you are ill or have any signs and symptoms of influenza (cough, runny nose, fever, sore throat, muscle aches, fatigue).

Immediate family members only. Infants/small children are discouraged from visiting.

Persons with compromised immune systems or pulmonary complications should visit only if absolutely necessary.

Any visitor noted to have influenza-like symptoms will be given a mask and asked to leave the facility.

In the Birth Center, visitors should be immediate family only. Siblings that are not showing signs of illness will be allowed to visit.

Compassionate exceptions to these restrictions may be warranted and will be evaluated on a case by case basis. 

Visitors are asked to wash their hands often, before entering a patient room and prior to leaving the facility. Sinks with soap and waterless hand sanitizer dispensers are available throughout the hospital.

Sometime between midnight and 10 a.m. Tuesday, someone stole the exhaust system from a 2014 Ford F250 pickup that was parked at The Ridge of Salina, 2363 Chapel Ridge Place, where the 27-year-old male victim lives, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said Thursday. The exhaust system was valued at $1,200, he said. Additionally, $5,000 worth of damage was done to the pickup when the exhaust system was cut out, Hanus said.

Also on Tuesday, between 6:30-8 a.m., a catalytic converter was stolen from a 2018 Ford F150 pickup belonging to Great Plains Manufacturing, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said Thursday. A Great Plains employee pulled the pickup out of the shop at 389 West First in Assaria and parked it at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, Soldan said. The catalytic converter was valued at $600, he added.

At 5 p.m., David Olson’s work will be on display with a reception at Peaceful Body Wellness Retreat’s new location (148 South Santa Fe Avenue). KHP was prepared for Y2K concerns

MANHATTAN– K-State Research and Extension, in partnership with Kansas Corn, is hosting six one-day Corn Production Schools at locations across Kansas this winter.

Three Corn Management Schools will be offered in early January 2020 in Montezuma, Parsons and Wichita. Three will be held in February in Oakley, Salina and Olathe. Each school is free to attend and will provide in-depth training targeted for corn producers in those regions.

The overall theme of this year’s schools is “Maximizing Advancements in Your Operation.”

“The schools will cover a number of issues facing corn producers in each region including Farm Bill options, weed control, insect resistance, fertility management, disease management and late-planting seasons. These events have a long-standing tradition and reputation in offering a solid set of topics of great relevancy to our corn growers across the state of Kansas,” said Ignacio Ciampitti, associate professor and corn specialist in the K-State Department of Agronomy.

Kansas Corn Director of Industry Relations Stacy Mayo-Martinez said the theme across the schools is about helping participants move forward into the new decade and discuss key issues with a variety of speakers, including other farmers.

“At the corn schools, we will feature farmers from each area who will talk about how they are maximizing advancements in their operations and looking toward finding success in tomorrow’s production agriculture,” Mayo-Martinez said. “At each school, we will also give an update from Kansas Corn on our 2020 priorities and our market development goals going forward into this new decade.”

A complimentary lunch will be served at each school. CCA credits and commercial pesticide credits will be available where applicable. Participants are asked to pre-register before Jan. 3 for the January schools and before Feb. 4 for February schools. K-State Corn Production Schools scheduled

MANHATTAN —&nbsp; &nbsp;In early December 2019, the Kansas Department of Agriculture and American International Charolais Association hosted a delegation of Costa Rican beef sector stakeholders. 

The delegates were nominated by the Costa Rican National Institute of Innovation and Transfer in Agricultural Technology (INTA) and included: Allen Monge, Lajitas de Buena Vista S.A.; Juan Carlos, Perla del Río Góngora Co.; Ronnie Cobb, Biofeed Genética; and Franz Heinsohn, Pradera del Norte. KDA was represented on the trade mission by Suzanne- Ryan Numrich, international trade director, and Shirley Acedo, agribusiness development coordinator. David Hobbs, director of activities, represented the American International Charolais Association (AICA).

The reverse trade mission was the result of a joint project that INTA, AICA, the Montana Department of Agriculture and KDA have been working on since early 2013. The main objective of the project was to improve and expand the Costa Rican beef cattle herd while increasing the opportunity for the sale of U.S. beef cattle genetics.

The multi-year project used Charolais and Red Angus semen for artificial insemination of native Costa Rican cattle, primarily Brahmans and Nelores, to create F1 crosses.&nbsp;Performance data including birth weight, weaning weight and carcass weight were collected on the calves in order to compare the U.S.-sired calves with the Costa Rican-sired calves.&nbsp;

“The U.S.-sired calves had faster rates of growth and higher quality carcasses compared with the native calves,” reported Ryan-Numrich. “Higher quality beef is increasing in popularity because of a growing number of middle-class consumers and booming tourism sector. By utilizing U.S. genetics to produce F1 crosses, Costa Rican cattlemen can improve the efficiency of their calves while producing more desirable and higher quality beef.”

The team started the reverse trade mission by attending a beef cattle industry educational seminar at AICA and ended the week at the Wright Charolais 9th&nbsp;Annual Female Sale in Kearney, Missouri. Other ranch visits included: Cody Cattle Company, Scandia; Fink Beef Genetics, Randolph; Hubert Charolais Ranch, Monument; Mushrush Ranches, Strong City; Nextgen Cattle Co., Paxico; Overmiller Red Angus and Gelbvieh, Smith Center; Schrader Ranch, Wells; Schumacher Trust Ranch, Hays; Smokey Hill Charolais, Hays; Smoky Y Ranch Red Angus, Monument; and T&amp;S Strand Charolais, Formoso.

“The trade mission provided the Costa Rican cattlemen an opportunity to view Kansas beef cattle genetics in working ranch environments. Kansas seedstock producers that hosted the cattlemen provided answers to many questions from the delegation — from calving ease to feedlot performance,” said Hobbs. “From my point of view, the Costa Rican cattlemen traveled home with solid interest in utilizing Kansas seedstock genetics to improve the efficiency and performance of their&nbsp;bos indicus&nbsp;based cowherds.”

The trade mission was organized by KDA and AICA and funded in part by U.S. Livestock Genetics Export, Inc. (USLGE). KDA strives to encourage and enhance economic growth of the agriculture industry and the Kansas economy by exploring and expanding both domestic and international marketing opportunities. The Kansas Ag Growth Project identified the beef sector as a key component for state growth.

KDA is offering two upcoming opportunities to Kansas farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses to participate in State Trade Expansion Program (STEP) grant trade missions planned for 2020: VICTAM Asia/Petfood Forum Asia, Bangkok, Thailand, March 24-26; and NAMPO Harvest Day, Bothaville, South Africa, May 12-15. Area ranches among those toured by Costa Rican delegation

Almost 15 years ago, I gave what would be one of the most important speeches of my career at the National FFA Convention. I agonized over creating the right message in hopes of making a lasting impact.

Years later, I watched another FFA member give the exact same speech. It had different stories, but the main points and overall message were the same. I was shocked because there was no way that this FFA member heard my speech. Their own life experiences must have led them to the same thoughts I had more than a decade prior.

Maybe it is a function of human nature or the product of a constant struggle to achieve the things we yearn for like success, love or the American Dream; ideas and lessons are rarely completely original or unique. Humans throughout history seem to live the same stories and plots repeatedly.

A few weeks ago, in my preoccupation with the too-short span between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I received invitations to multiple Roaring Twenties themed New Year’s Eve parties. What an original idea (at least to me, to celebrate a time that history books hailed as a time of whimsy, spectacle and entertainment.

Since then, this idea that history repeats itself and has been on my mind. What will the 2020s have in common with the 1920s, and, more importantly, what can be learned from a decade that earned the moniker “roaring?”

This curiosity led me to a brief internet refresher because the attributes filling my mind were all the “Great Gatsby.” My search revealed interesting facts and similarities to modern life in this gap between World War I and the Great Depression.

Warren Harding’s successful campaign used the slogan “Return to Normalcy,” painting a nostalgic picture of life before WW I, which ended a year earlier. Harding called for politics that were, “not the dramatic, but the dispassionate” and for people to remember that “human ills are not curable by legislation … excess of government offer(s) no substitute for quality of citizenship.” President Harding was popular until scandals came to light after his death in 1923.The title roaring came from all of the excitement of the time. The economy was growing. New products like automobiles, moving pictures and radio brought “modernity” to the masses. Social change was prevalent with women winning the right to vote in many states and national debates taking place about prohibition, immigration, political corruption and industrialization. It was the age of Gatsby with jazz, art deco, flappers and speakeasys. The decade has a larger than life zeitgeist.The Roaring Twenties had a definitive and halting end. All that prosperity and liveliness faded with the crash of the stock marketing in October of 1929 and a new era of hardship and scarcity in the Great Depression.Parallels exist between the two times. Politicians are human, and humans are fallible. Some people still yearn for normalcy, while others desire social and political change. Technology and the economy have points of great growth, but that will not last forever.My takeaway is simple. Spirit not circumstance can define people. Times will be both better and worse in my future.
