The final round of grants has been awarded from the Salina Area United Way (SAUW) COVID-19 Relief Fund.

The SAUW COVID-19 Relief Fund raised&nbsp;$105,690&nbsp;and awarded funds to 33 non-profits in the SAUW 10-county service area.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The most recent grants awarded are as follows.

Volunteers of America (Salina)&nbsp;- $5,000 to purchase 73 essential food baskets with cleaning supplies for senior living in low-income housing at Market Place and Salina Apartments.

CAPS (Salina)&nbsp;- $5,000 to purchase technology equipment to continue to provide services remotely and cleaning supplies for increased sanitation requirements that were not expected&nbsp;&nbsp;

DVACK (Salina)&nbsp;- $5,000 to assist victims of domestic violence and sexual assault with hotel vouchers, toiletries, and household cleaning supplies.

Gopherwood Community Foundation (Salina)&nbsp;- $5,000 to materials for volunteers to make masks to give free of charge to nursing homes, home healthcare, and senior living facilities.

CKF (Salina)&nbsp;– An additional $1,306 was given due to only being able to partially fund original grant because of limited funds.

Central Kansas Mental Health (Salina)&nbsp;– An additional $1,306 was given due to only being able to partially fund original grant because of limited funds.

Downs Food Bank (Downs)&nbsp;- $5,000 to provide food assistance to individuals and families in Downs, Cawker City, and Tipton.

North Salina Community Development (Salina)&nbsp;- $3,763 to purchase food only gift cards from Save-A-Lot for residents of Hawthorne and Lakewood low-income apartments.

Sisters of St. Joseph (Concordia)&nbsp;- $2,500 to purchase food, diapers, formula, and provide assistance with medical bills, prescriptions, and utility payments.&nbsp;

People In Need (Salina)&nbsp;- $3,740 to purchase food, and provide assistance with rent and utilities.

Concordia Senior Center (Concordia)&nbsp;- $500 to purchase food to provide Meals on Wheels to seniors that are not able to leave their due to COVID.

At 5:54 a.m. CDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing rain across the warned area. Up to three inches of rain have already fallen. Flash flooding is already occurring.

Additionally, NWS in Topeka has issued a flash flood warning in effect until 8:30 a.m. Saturday for southwestern Clay County and southern Cloud County. At 4:01 a.m. CDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. 3 to 6 inches of rain have fallen. Flash flooding is already occurring.

MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department today reported seven new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the county total to 62 cases.

The following information about the new cases was provided by the health department.

•One newly positive case is a symptomatic female in her 30s with known exposure and is recovering at home.

•Another newly positive case is a symptomatic female in her 40s with known exposure and is recovering at home.

•Another newly positive case is a symptomatic male in his 60s with known exposure and is recovering at home.

•Another newly positive case is a symptomatic female in her 60s with known exposure and is recovering at home.

•Another newly positive case is a symptomatic female in her 20s with known exposure and is recovering at home.

•Another newly positive case is a symptomatic female in her 60s with unknown exposure and is recovering at home.

•Another newly positive case is a symptomatic male in his 20s with unknown exposure and is recovering at home.

The health department noted that 41 of the total confirmed cases in McPherson County have now met recovery guidelines set forth by the KDHE.

Following is additional information provided by the McPherson County Health Department.

McPherson County has had a tremendous uptake in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in the last week. An alarming amount of cases are asymptomatic, meaning they do not have any signs or symptoms. A portion of these positive cases report attending gatherings at local lakes, parties, or traveling sport tournaments while contagious. These are events both inside and outside of McPherson County. If you are notified by the Health Department of being a contact of someone who is positive for COVID-19, you MUST quarantine at home for 14 days. This means that a negative test will not return an exposed person to work/sports/daycare/etc. sooner than 14 days. If you are a contact, decide to be tested, and it comes back negative, you STILL have to finish your 14-day period because you may become contagious anytime during the rest of the 14 days. We do NOT routinely recommend testing contacts unless symptoms arise or a high risk individual is involved. People who have not had direct exposure to someone with COVID-19 do not need to quarantine and are not excluded from work/sports/daycare/etc.

If you are being tested for COVID-19, you are considered a Person Under Investigation (PUI). The PUI MUST isolate while waiting on results. The PUI should isolate away from anyone in their household. If they are not able to isolate away from the household members by staying in their own room, the entire household must quarantine while awaiting results to reduce exposure.

If a person in quarantine does not develop any COVID-19 symptoms, then they are released from quarantine at the end of 14 days. If symptoms do develop during those 14 days, the person is to contact their primary provider for further evaluation and/or testing. People who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 may be released from isolation at the direction of the Health Department when it has been 10 days since the onset of symptoms AND 72 hours since symptoms have resolved. This symptom-based method of returning people to work is preferred to a testing-based method of returning people to work because tests can still remain positive long after the virus is no longer active.

These are challenging days for groups and businesses. They are responsible for providing a safe environment for their employees and participants. They are severely affected when their employees and participants are excluded due to exposure. Much of this exposure is occurring outside of work. The best way to keep our businesses open and functional and keep our social interactions available is to maintain a 6-foot physical distance between people and wear a mask when in public when physical distancing may be difficult to maintain.

McPherson County reports 7 new confirmed cases of COVID-19

Following is Saline County's COVID-19 update for Friday.

There are 21 new positive COVID-19 cases in Saline County that have been identified since the Wednesday, June 24 report. The total for the county is now 98, with 60 cases that are actively being monitored by the Health Department. All of the new cases are associated with prior positive cases and all of these individuals are isolated. *KDHE is reporting 81 positives for Saline County but that total does not include the most recent cases received since their last update at 12:30 pm. The total for Saline County is 98. With all of our additional cases, we were able to determine where the virus was contracted and have notified all close contacts that could have potentially been exposed.

According to the Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment, there are now 13,538 cases and 264 deaths statewide. This information can be found at <a href="https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/">https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/</a>.

“While the rise in case numbers is concerning, it is only one part of the overall picture that is used to make decisions,” said County Health Officer Jason Tiller. “There are three other data setsthat are looked at. Those are the number of hospitalizations, the use of hospital resources since Salina Regional does get patients from other hospitals, and the number of deaths. Of those four, only case numbers have risen.”

 </figure>Following is Saline County's COVID-19 update for Friday.There are 21 new positive COVID-19 cases in Saline County that have been identified since the Wednesday, June 24 report. The total for the county is now 98, with 60 cases that are actively being monitored by the Health Department. All of the new cases are associated with prior positive cases and all of these individuals are isolated. *KDHE is reporting 81 positives for Saline County but that total does not include the most recent cases received since their last update at 12:30 pm. The total for Saline County is 98. With all of our additional cases, we were able to determine where the virus was contracted and have notified all close contacts that could have potentially been exposed.According to the Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment, there are now 13,538 cases and 264 deaths statewide. McPherson County Sheriff's Office patches to benefit local group

The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating a burglary at the Cargill elevator west of Salina.

According to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan, surveillance video shows that at approximately 1 a.m. Thursday, a vehicle parked along the roadway near the office/scale area of the elevator, which is located at 1112 North Halstead Road. Someone then broke through a wooden door and into the office area, he said. 

Items taken include the following, Soldan said.

A black Motorola radio with microphone, valued at $665

A blood-born pathogens first aid kit valued at $150

Additionally, damage to the door was estimated at $10, he said.

Sheriff's office personnel hope to review surveillance video from other cameras at the elevator in an effort to identify the vehicle and burglar, Soldan said.

Sheriff's office investigating burglary at Cargill elevator

A Salina man was arrested Thursday morning after an incident at a southwest Salina storage facility.

Officers were called to the Storage Mart, 1540 West Schilling Road, at 10 a.m. Thursday for the report of storage unit theft, Salina Police Detective Sergeant David Villanueva said this morning. When they arrived, they noticed several individuals moving items from multiple vehicles and thought it suspicious, he said.

As they approached the individuals, one took off running, first north on Centennial Road, then through the Airport Apartments on Berschel Avenue, before being located in a drainage structure near the intersection of Scanlan Avenue and Sutherland Road, Villanueva said.

When Dolton Glen Dewitt, 21, of Salina, was apprehended, officers found marijuana in his pocket, Villanueva said. Back at the storage facility, officers searched a vehicle belonging to Dewitt, he said. The vehicle had an improper tag and the VIN had been removed, Villanueva said. Additionally, methamphetamine and marijuana were found in the vehicle, he said.

Dewitt was arrested on the following requested charges, Villanueva said.

Two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia

He also was arrested on several active warrants from Saline County District Court for felony drug offenses

The storage unit theft investigation continues, Villanueva said.

Salina man arrested on requested drug charges

Two people from Indiana are in the Saline County Jail on multiple requested charges after leading deputies on an early Friday morning pursuit.

A Saline County Sheriff's deputy was in the 500 block of North Ninth Street at 2:49 a.m. Friday when he noticed a 2020 silver Dodge Charger with no license plate. When the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled northbound on North Ninth Street before turning west on Interstate 70 (I-70), sometimes traveling in excess of 100 mph, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning.

•Exit I-70 at Halstead Road, then south to the entry ramp to eastbound I-70

•East on I-70 then south on Interstate 135 (I-135)

•West on Crawford Street to Halstead Road before turning around and driving east in the westbound lane, causing deputies to swerve to avoid a head-on collision

Soldan said a Salina Police Officer had deployed stop spikes just north of the State Street exit on I-135. When the Charger drove over the spikes, however, the pull rope broke and the officer was unable to retrieve the spikes before two sheriff's vehicles and a motorist's vehicle drove over them, causing multiple tire punctures, Soldan explained. No one was injured, he added.

The Charger continued north on U.S. Highway 81, exiting at Kansas Highway 143, Soldan said. The charger then turned west, but was unable to successfully navigate the gravel road at the "T" intersection just west of I-135, he said. 

The driver and a passenger exited the Charger and fled on foot, hiding in a nearby field before being apprehended, Soldan said. The Charger, as it turns out, was reported stolen out of Illinois, he said.

The driver, Destinee Milton-Mata, 23, of Gary, Ind., was arrested on the following requested charges, Soldan said.

The passenger, Stefano Childress, 31, of Hammond, Ind., was arrested on the following requested charges, Soldan said.

Soldan said that a 30-day permit belonging to one of the individuals, but not to the Charger, was duct taped inside the back window, but because of the window tinted was not able to be seen.

Two from Indiana jailed after high-speed chase early Friday

Two farmers in south-central Saline County lost parts of their wheat fields to fire Thursday afternoon. 

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that deputies and Rural Fire District No. 2 personnel were called to the 9600 block of South Burma Road for the report of a wheat field on fire. 

Leon Swanson, 77, had started to cut his wheat and had made a first pass when someone noticed the field was on fire, Soldan said. It is believed that something on the combine overheated and caused the fire, he said. Swanson was able to get his combine out of the field in time, Soldan added.

Twenty acres of Swanson's field burned at an estimated loss of $5,950, he said.

Additionally, the fire jumped into an adjoining wheat field belonging to Matthew Cline, 40, with a loss of 13 acres estimated at $2,210, Soldan said.

•Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.

•Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.

•Water contact should be avoided.

•Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.

•Do not allow pets to eat dried algae.. If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

•Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.

A&nbsp;watch&nbsp;means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.

During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

•Signage will be posted at all public access locations.

•Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.

•Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.

•Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.

•Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.

•Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.
