Saline County has launched a new dashboard that outlines demographic information regarding the COVID-19 health emergency. This dashboard is available on both desktop and mobile platforms. There are 13 new positive COVID-19 cases in Saline County that have been identified since the Wednesday, July 15 report. The total for the county is now 268, with 120 cases that are actively being monitored by the Health Department, 145 that have recovered, and 3 deaths. Salina Regional Health Center reports 5 patients are admitted to their hospital with COVID-19.

According to the Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment, there are now 21,965 cases and 299 deaths statewide. This information can be found at <a href="https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/">https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/</a>.

•The Kansas Crisis Counseling Program offers information online at <a href="http://www.ksready.gov">www.ksready.gov</a> including online resource guides and toolkits to assist in finding available mental health resources and information for mental health needs during COVID-19.

Saline County: 13 new COVID-19 cases, new reporting dashboard

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has completed testing at the Saline County Jail and determined the potential COVID-19 outbreak that forced closure of the lobby June 29 has been contained.

The lobby will reopen for inmate video visitation and bonding on Monday, according to information from Sheriff Roger Soldan.

Fingerprinting services will also resume and will be available Monday-Friday from 8-11 a.m. and 1-4 p.m., Soldan noted.

Visitors to the jail lobby will be required to wear masks in accordance with local ordinance.

If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.

A watch means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water. During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.

Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.

Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.

Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.

Kansans should be aware that blooms are unpredictable. They can develop rapidly and may float around the lake, requiring visitors to exercise their best judgment. If there is scum, a paint-like surface or the water is bright green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

Marion officer graduates with 265th basic training class at KLETC

A welder and the trailer it was on were stolen early Thursday from a west Salina business.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning video surveillance indicates that at approximately 2 a.m. Thursday, two male subjects stole a red and black welder on a black box hitch trailer, some miscellaneous tools, and a welding mask from Rodriguez Enterprises, 1707 West Crawford. A Dodge pickup can be seen backing over the curb and onto the business' property. Two male subjects are seen exiting the pickup and hooking the trailer to the vehicle, Forrester explained.

The pickup then left the area headed westbound on Cypress Drive, he added.

Total loss was estimated at $2,000, Forrester noted.

NWS: Dangerous heat indices Friday and Saturday

MANHATTAN – Tandy Rundus believes creativity finds a place in the kitchen when the cupboards are bare.

A specialist for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) in northeast Kansas, Rundus has outlined many creative solutions for using what’s in stock and stretching the family’s food budget in a publication now available from K-State Research and Extension.

<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/MF3534.pdf" target="_blank">Cooking Basics: Make a Meal from What’s on Hand</a>&nbsp;is available for free online, guiding home chefs through creative ways to use the foods they have on hand to make many of their favorite dishes.

“That concept transcends socio-economic status,” Rundus said. “Some people may have stocked up on food during the pandemic and now have several items that they need to use up. Others are in a situation where their income is tighter and using up every food item on hand helps to stretch the food dollar.”

Rundus said when supplies are low in the pantry, common recipes can be used as “road maps” for making meals. “Just as there are alternate roads on a map to arrive at a specific destination, there are alternate options to complete that recipe,” she said.

The publication promotes the concept of grouping ingredients into categories:

Proteins,&nbsp;including various meats, eggs, fish, seafood, nuts and legume-type beans.

Vegetables,&nbsp;fresh, frozen or canned.. Starch,&nbsp;including pasta, rice and potatoes.

Liquid,&nbsp;including broths, tomato juice and milk.

Sauce,&nbsp;including various soups, diced tomatoes with juice and gravy made with corn starch and water.

Flavors,&nbsp;which could be combinations of chopped vegetables, dried or fresh herbs, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce and salt and pepper.

With those groupings in place, Rundus said it’s much easier to combine ingredients to make stir fry, skillet meals, casseroles, soups, salad, pizza and more.

The publication is the latest in a series from a team of K-State Research and Extension professionals who focus on nutrition, food safety and health, highlighting Kansans’ interest in improving their basic cooking skills during the current pandemic. Rundus said that from April 2-20, K-State Research and Extension surveyed 1,341 state residents and found that meal planning and preparation were among the concerns of several respondents.

K-State nutrition specialist Sandy Procter emphasized the value of cooking as a family.

“Learning to create meals -- or snacks for that matter -- from what is on hand is a skill that will serve kids and adults well, and builds resilience,” she said. “If a teen is able to look in the refrigerator or cupboard and visualize a meal from what is on hand, there is a better chance they will be able to feed themselves, and others, regardless of circumstances. Parents can help children develop this ability at an early age by talking about building recipes, substituting ingredients when needed and instilling confidence.”

Procter and many colleagues developed a publications series titled Essential Living Skills, which also is available through the&nbsp;<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">K-State Research and Extension bookstore</a>. She said many of the university’s publications help kids and parents review basic concepts and build life skills.

“Kids with those skills are well-equipped to help out at home and also care for themselves as they grow up,” she said. “Cooking skills allow people to save money and eat more healthfully than if they ate more meals away from home. During the recent stay-at-home times, people clearly recognized the benefits of cooking at home and getting creative with meal prep using ingredients they had on hand.”

 </figure>MANHATTAN – Tandy Rundus believes creativity finds a place in the kitchen when the cupboards are bare.A specialist for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) in northeast Kansas, Rundus has outlined many creative solutions for using what’s in stock and stretching the family’s food budget in a publication now available from K-State Research and Extension.<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/MF3534.pdf" target="_blank">Cooking Basics: Make a Meal from What’s on Hand</a>&nbsp;is available for free online, guiding home chefs through creative ways to use the foods they have on hand to make many of their favorite dishes.“That concept transcends socio-economic status,” Rundus said. “Some people may have stocked up on food during the pandemic and now have several items that they need to use up. Others are in a situation where their income is tighter and using up every food item on hand helps to stretch the food dollar.”Rundus said when supplies are low in the pantry, common recipes can be used as “road maps” for making meals. “Just as there are alternate roads on a map to arrive at a specific destination, there are alternate options to complete that recipe,” she said.The publication promotes the concept of grouping ingredients into categories:Proteins,&nbsp;including various meats, eggs, fish, seafood, nuts and legume-type beans.Vegetables,&nbsp;fresh, frozen or canned.. On June 19, 2020, between 6:55-7 p.m., a man was in Vanderbilt’s, 3005 Enterprise Dr, Salina. It was reported that the male put on a new pair of boots and walked out of the store without paying for the merchandise. 

The male was contacted outside of the store, and a photograph was taken. The boots were valued at $200.

The male was described as being in his 20s, with a medium build and dark hair. He was wearing a camouflage shirt and hat, and blue jeans. He also had a large tattoo on his arm.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about theft of boots from store

MANHATTAN – Teenagers who responded to a&nbsp;<a href="https://4-h.org/about/research/#!healthy-living" target="_blank">survey commissioned by the National 4-H Council</a>&nbsp;said that more than 7 in 10 kids between the ages of 13-19 are struggling with their mental health.

Perhaps of equal concern: The same survey indicates that teens are feeling more pressured to hide their feelings, rather than talk to a supportive adult.

“It’s not unusual for young people to report that they’re feeling distressed, anxious or depressed, but I do think what’s unique and probably troublesome around the National 4-H Council report is that the young people thought they couldn’t talk about the feelings they had,” said Elaine Johannes, an extension 4-H Youth Development specialist at Kansas State University.

“They felt pressured to hide their feelings, to pretend they weren’t worried, and to deal with problems on their own. That’s unique.”

The National 4-H Council’s survey was conducted by The Harris Poll from May 4-14. There were 1,516 respondents; 230 of those were 4-H members, and 1,286 had never participated in 4-H.

<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H</a>&nbsp;state leader Wade Weber said the data indicate that 71 percent of the teens felt that they are misunderstood by an older person in their life; 67 percent said at times the pressure is too much for them to handle; and they are three times more likely to feel pressured to talk about their problems than they are to drink alcohol or do drugs.

“The National 4-H Council’s survey takes a temperature of what youth are talking about today,” Weber said. “I think it’s important to highlight those things because young people… are not finding ready-made pathways for them to talk about their problems with the adults who are very concerned about them. Those are the types of things that we are wanting to follow up on as a state 4-H program.”

Johannes said the current findings are very similar to a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pewsocialtrends.org/2019/02/20/most-u-s-teens-see-anxiety-and-depression-as-a-major-problem-among-their-peers" target="_blank">2019 study of mental health of teens</a>, conducted by the Pew Research Center. However, teens did report that the COVID-19 pandemic has increased their sense of loneliness and made it more difficult to connect with their support systems.

Teens, she said, may be reacting to the perception that adults also are distressed.&nbsp;<a href="http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2020/05/07/a-third-of-americans-experienced-high-levels-of-psychological-distress-during-the-coronavirus-outbreak" target="_blank">The Pew Research Center reported in May</a>&nbsp;that 33 percent of Americans are experiencing greater psychological distress as a result of the global pandemic.

“I do think that is a factor in how the young people who responded to the (National 4-H Council) poll saying they were not comfortable talking about their own emotional health,” Johannes said. “I assume they are noticing that the adults probably don’t have the capacity to listen right now because we are struggling with our own emotional health.

“It’s this constellation of issues that really puts our young people at most risk, but also may make them more resilient.”

Other key findings from the National 4-H Council’s survey include:

71% of those surveyed say school work makes them feel anxious or depressed.

65% of those surveyed say uncertainty about the future makes them feel anxious or depressed.

Approximately 45% say that they try to ignore their feelings or spend more time alone when they are dealing with mental health issues.

46% of teens reported social media as their most common outlet for learning about coping mechanisms for mental health and 43% follow or support someone on social media who openly talks about their mental health issues.

82% of teens are calling on America to talk more openly and honestly about mental health issues in this country.

He notes that 65 percent of teens also reported that they want their family members to talk with them more about their mental health.“Exercise some courage; exercise some humility to be able to say we’re in a challenging time right now, but it’s an opportunity to hear one another and work toward solutions together,” he said. “Doing so will help us develop resiliency as a family unit and as individuals. It’s important that young people believe that they can disclose their problems while knowing that there are support systems in their lives that want to help them navigate those in a way that includes healthy coping mechanisms and practices.”For parents, that may mean re-framing the challenges they are facing, according to Johannes.“Change the language you’re using and the focus in such a way that we are representing resilience,” she said. “You can model resilience and use words that represent growing stronger. For example, instead of talking about deficits, risks and limits, talk about opportunities for the young person to discover their identity, and the social and emotional health they are building during this time of challenge.”Weber added: “One of the things I would encourage along the way is the ability to be patient, purposeful and persistent. Because you can’t just turn around and say to a young person, ‘Okay dad has 30 minutes, what’s going on?’ That’s usually not the recipe for authentic conversation and sharing.“But if you can give that 30 minutes, be with them, try and connect into their world, see the world through their eyes.
