MANHATTAN -- In recognition of Medicare’s importance in the lives of older Kansans and to help those soon needing to enroll in Medicare, the North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging (NC-FH AAA) announced a new series of Answers for Older Kansans: Medicare Basics seminars.

Karen Mayse, a certified Medicare benefits counselor with more than 10 years of experience in explaining Medicare to Kansans, will present 12 Zoom seminars between Wednesday and Aug. 20.

Medicare is health insurance for people who are age 65 or better and also for people who qualify because of disabilities. The Zoom Medicare Basics seminar series provides an easy-to-understand overview of Medicare in two parts and includes steps to enrollment and how Medicare works with employers’ insurance. It also provides answers about Extra Help and other Medicare Savings Programs and participants’ questions. Information specific to the Medicare Basics seminars will be available to each participant who registers.

To register, people may go to <a href="http://www.ncfhaaa.com/seminars">www.ncfhaaa.com/seminars</a> or call 800-432-2703 the day before the event. The link to the Zoom event will be sent to each participant prior to the seminar.

“Medicare is very complex--people are strongly encouraged to register for both Part 1 and Part 2 sessions—these sessions will provide the ‘total Medicare picture,’” said Julie Govert Walter, executive director of the NC-FH AAA.

“Our goal with this Answers for Older Kansans series is to give older Kansans, people living with disabilities, their caregivers and family members practical, trustworthy and easy-to-understand information about Medicare in a safe, friendly small group setting,” she said.

Rolling Hills Zoo postpones activities due to COVID-19

WICHITA -- Wichita State University has announced the names of more than 3,700 students who were on the WSU dean's honor roll for spring 2020.

To be included on the dean's honor roll, a student must be enrolled full time (at least 12 credit hours) and earn at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Online applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday.

This cycle, $89,000 is available for charitable projects in Saline County that meet one or more of the following criteria:

•Projects that improve the quality of life for Saline County residents.

•Projects or programs that support and encourage healthy living across Saline County.

•Projects that improve quality of life for citizens of Assaria, Kansas.

•Organizations or programs in Saline or Ottawa Counties whose work furthers the care, education, development, health, safety and human service needs of children ages 0-6 to better prepare them for kindergarten.

•Projects that promote hands-on learning opportunities for school-age youth in the areas of arts, humanities, science, technology and invention.

Funding for the August community grant cycle is provided by the Assaria Community Fund, the Fund for Early Childhood Care, Education and Development, the Kansas Health Foundation Fund for GSCF, the L.P. “Pat” Mullen Fund and the Fund for Greater Salina.

Grants are limited to communities in Saline County and will be awarded through a competitive application process. Requests for funding up to $5,000 will be considered. Nonprofit organizations, government and public entities, educational institutions and churches are encouraged to apply. Applications must be submitted online by 11:59 p.m. on August 15. Beginning Monday, the Kansas Department of Transportation will begin replacing sections of guardrail on Interstate 135 in McPherson County. 

The guardrail is located between the Kansas Highway 61/U.S. Highway 81 junction and Wells Fargo Road bridge, mile post 58 to mile post 75.

Traffic flow through the work zone will not be restricted during the project.

Fulsom Brothers Inc. of Cedar Vale is the primary contractor for this $163,514 project. The contractor has scheduled work to be completed by August, weather permitting.

KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approaching and driving through a work zone.&nbsp;Check <a href="http://kandrive.org">kandrive.org</a> for updates and more information.

A man whose artwork examines borders, edges, and the people who must traverse them is scheduled to be the next artist in residence in the Salina Art Center Warehouse.

The Salina Art Center welcomes Fidencio Fifield-Perez to a month-long artist residency, July 1-29, 2020, to create new work at the center’s warehouse, followed by an exhibition,&nbsp;Birdwatchers, July 29-Oct. 4 in the Art Center galleries.

The galleries will open to the public on July 22 and follow current COVID-19 city and state guidelines requiring masks and social distancing.

Fifield-Perez, assistant professor at the University of Missouri School of Visual Studies, Columbia, Mo., was born in Oaxaca, Mexico, but raised in the U.S. after his family migrated when he was six years old.&nbsp; The artist’s current work examines borders, edges, and the people who must traverse them.&nbsp; Fifield-Perez manipulates paper surfaces and maps to refer to the crafts and customs used to celebrate festivals and mourn the dead, which he learned as a child in Oaxaca.&nbsp; He uses these techniques to reconnect with a time and place no longer present.&nbsp;&nbsp;On Wednesday at noon, the Art Center will host a Lunch and Learn discussion with the artist on FACEBOOK Live&nbsp;to explore contemporary issues and society through his lens as an artist.

In addition to new works, the exhibition will include the&nbsp;Dacaments&nbsp;installation, which reflects how the artist’s current DACA status “forces me to be a hoarder” due to the constant need to provide paperwork and documentation of work and education status. Fifield-Perez uses the envelopes sent to him with DACA paperwork to create a collection of plants as portraits of friends and loved ones (who gifted him many of the plants), and symbols of hope for a permanent home here. The house plants have no permanent home, but are moveable, representing the precarious position and constant anxiety of DACA recipients. The&nbsp;Dacaments&nbsp;installation will serve as inspiration for a&nbsp;Plant Propagation Workshop, July 18, 2-4 pm.&nbsp; Reservations are required for the free workshop.&nbsp;Anyone is welcome to participate and reservations can be made at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.salinaartcenter.org/" target="_blank">www.salinaartcenter.org</a>.&nbsp;

Another large piece of cut-paperwork titled&nbsp;Surge&nbsp;will be installed over the course of four days,&nbsp;July 22-24. From noon-5 p.m. these days the public is invited to interact with the artist and observe the installation but must reserve a time&nbsp;by calling the Art Center or making a reservation online. The physical act of installing&nbsp;Surge&nbsp;is laborious and tedious, requiring the artist to use hundreds of small red push pins like those used by border patrol agents to mark on their maps where bodies have been found at border crossings. The artist's labor is also representative of the physical body within the work.&nbsp;

The Salina Art Center plans a&nbsp;Virtual Opening Reception for Aug. 7 at 6 p.m. Details will be announced in the future. Other related public programs include:

 </figure>In addition to new works, the exhibition will include the&nbsp;Dacaments&nbsp;installation, which reflects how the artist’s current DACA status “forces me to be a hoarder” due to the constant need to provide paperwork and documentation of work and education status. Fifield-Perez uses the envelopes sent to him with DACA paperwork to create a collection of plants as portraits of friends and loved ones (who gifted him many of the plants), and symbols of hope for a permanent home here. The house plants have no permanent home, but are moveable, representing the precarious position and constant anxiety of DACA recipients. The&nbsp;Dacaments&nbsp;installation will serve as inspiration for a&nbsp;Plant Propagation Workshop, July 18, 2-4 pm.&nbsp; Reservations are required for the free workshop.&nbsp;Anyone is welcome to participate and reservations can be made at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.salinaartcenter.org/" target="_blank">www.salinaartcenter.org</a>.&nbsp;Another large piece of cut-paperwork titled&nbsp;Surge&nbsp;will be installed over the course of four days,&nbsp;July 22-24. From noon-5 p.m. these days the public is invited to interact with the artist and observe the installation but must reserve a time&nbsp;by calling the Art Center or making a reservation online. The physical act of installing&nbsp;Surge&nbsp;is laborious and tedious, requiring the artist to use hundreds of small red push pins like those used by border patrol agents to mark on their maps where bodies have been found at border crossings. The artist's labor is also representative of the physical body within the work.&nbsp;The Salina Art Center plans a&nbsp;Virtual Opening Reception for Aug. 7 at 6 p.m. Details will be announced in the future. SAC residency explores borders, people who traverse edges of society

There is a risk for severe storms this afternoon and early evening, mainly across south-central, east-central and southeast Kansas, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita. 

The main threats will be large hail up to golf ball size and damaging winds to 70 mph, NWS reported. Locally heavy rainfall and minor lowland flooding is also possible, NWS added.

LINCOLN -- The Lincoln County Health Department today reported the county's second case of COVID-19. 

The county was one of the few in the state that had no confirmed cases of COVID-19 for much of the pandemic, reporting its first confirmed case on Wednesday.

In late June, the health department reported a confirmed case, however the person in question was temporarily living outside Kansas, had no Kansas contacts, and no exposure in Kansas. By July 1, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment had removed the person from Lincoln County's official COVID-19 count.

The second confirmed Lincoln County case is in isolation at home and the health department is calling the person's identified contacts, according to a news release from the health department.

"Our goal continues to be preventing and limiting exposure to our population. Per Dr. Lee Norman, KDHE Secretary of Health and Environment, 'Kansas should remain vigilant. It's important to live your lives, but it's also important to take basic precautions, like exercising good hygiene practices. It is up to each of us to do our part,'" the health department noted in the news release.

MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department today reported three additional confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the county total to 92.

Following is the information about the three newly reported cases as provided by the health department.

Positive case No. 90 is a symptomatic male in his 60s with unknown exposure and is recovering at home.

Positive case No. 91 is a symptomatic male in his 30s with unknown exposure and is recovering at home.

Positive case No. 92 is a symptomatic female in her teens with known exposure and is recovering at home

Of the 92 cases, 79 have met Kansas Department of Health and Environment recovery guidelines, the health department reported. Following is additional data from the health department.
