Mowery Clinic has announced that Dr. Megan Morriss, general surgeon, has joined the clinic. 

Morriss joins Dr. Chris Rupe, Dr. Seth Vernon, and Dr. Steven Groene at Mowery Clinic, located at 737 East Crawford Street.

From an early age, Morriss knew that she wanted to be a doctor. 

“As cliché as it sounds, even as a little girl I would tell my parents that I was going to be a doctor one day. From grade school and high school, and then eventually college, I always envisioned it as my way to help others,” said Morriss.

Her passion to help others coupled with a love for the operating room is what led her to become a surgeon.

“Not only did I want to make a difference in the lives of others, I also loved the idea of having the opportunity to never stop learning. Medicine is an ever-changing art, an art that always keeps you working to master the next skill,” said Morriss. “The immediacy of helping patients drew me to the field of surgery. I love the idea of an entire team working towards the common goal of caring for a patient. Mowery Clinic welcomes first female general surgeon

MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department this afternoon reported three additional confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the county total to 165.

Following is information about the most recent confirmed cases, as provided by the health department.

Positive case No. 163 is a symptomatic male in his 70s with known exposure and is recovering at home.

Positive case No. 164 is a symptomatic male in his 30s with known exposure and is recovering at home.

Positive case No. 165 is a symptomatic 5 year old female with known exposure and is recovering at home.

Of the 165 total confirmed cases, 146 have met Kansas Department of Health and Environment recovery guidelines, according to the health department. None of the active cases are hospitalized, the health department noted.

RHZ: It's almost time for the tiger cubs' birthday party

Approximately $1,500 worth of coins were stolen from a garage in north Salina earlier this week.

Sometime between 8:15 p.m. Tuesday and 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, someone broke into a locked garage in the 500 block of Reynolds Street and stole two jars full of coins, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. A piece of plywood had been pried off the door and the back gate to the yard was found open, he noted.

One jar contained approximately $1,000 worth of coins and the other approximately $500 worth of coins, according to Forrester. 

Damage to the door was estimated at $25, he added.

Police are investigating the theft of a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee from a central Salina neighborhood early Wednesday.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported today that sometime between midnight and 4 a.m. Wednesday, someone stole a gray 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee from the 600 block of Highland Avenue.

Paige Norwood, 28, of Salina, told police that she was visiting a resident in the 600 block of Highland Avenue and left her Jeep, with license tag of KS 344FPF, parked on the street, according to Forrester. The vehicle was unlocked and the keys were left in the vehicle, he noted. Additionally, $500 that was left in the vehicle also is missing, he reported.

A neighbor reported seeing the Jeep at midnight and then the vehicle was gone at 4 a.m., Forrester explained.

Total loss was estimated at $13,500, he noted.

Jeep stolen from central Salina early Wednesday

As Great Plains Manufacturing was announcing its $53 million Salina expansion, Signify announced it was closing its lighting production facility here.

The announcement bodes well for Great Plains, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kubota North America Corporation, as it plans to purchase the 750,000-square-foot facility on South Ninth Street from Signify and convert it into a manufacturing plant for Kubota's SVL65 compact track loaders initially.

The sale is expected to close on July 31, 2021, Signify noted.

"In response to the declining demand for conventional lighting, Signify will leverage economies of scale and improve efficiencies by relocating the production of its conventional lighting products from this facility to its facilities in Poland and India," the company reported in a news release issued this morning.

Signify plans to gradually transition production and to cease operations at the Salina facility, still known to many in the area as Philips Lighting, in the second quarter of 2021, according to information from the company.

"The decision has not been taken lightly but is necessary with the ongoing transformation in the lighting industry. Signify will support its affected employees through the transition, and provide resources and training to assist them through this difficult period and set them up for future success," the company noted in the news release.

Signify currently employs 159 people at the Salina facility, a company representative told Salina Post this morning.

Signify closing local facility, moving to India, Poland

Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc., announced today a $53 million expansion project for its Salina operation. 

Great Plains is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kubota North America Corporation.

The expansion will be into the current 750,000-square-foot Signify/Philips Lighting plant on South Ninth Street, which will close in the second quarter of 2021, Signify announced today. Currently, 159 people work in the Signify/Philips plant, the company told Salina Post this morning.

Great Plains plans to begin operations in the new facility by the end of 2021, and will utilize a phased approach. 

"This facility, through renovations, the equipment needed to turn it into a suitable production facility for us, requires a $43 million investment. There will be an additional $10 million spent in startup costs, including training, for a total spend of about $53 million," Linda Salem, president and CEO of Great Plains Manufacturing, Inc., said during the announcement of the expansion.

Initially, Great Plains will plan to add approximately 130 new manufacturing jobs, Salem said. The size of the building on South Ninth Street will allow for future expansion as well, she said.

Salem said the products that will be made in the new facility are new to Great Plains, but not to Kubota.

"The initial product we will focus on will be the Kubota compact track loader called the SVL65," Salem said. "This product is manufactured in Japan today. Kubota's strategy is to move production closer to the market and the North American market is the No. 1 customer for this unit, so we are honored they have entrusted the manufacturing of this important product to Great Plains."

Salem said the building on South Ninth Street will be available to Great Plains in August of 2021.

"We anticipate that there will be full production the last quarter of 2022 with approximately 130 employees," Salem said.

Currently, Great Plains employs 1,450 people throughout Kansas, according to company information. The Salina announcement is the latest in a series of Midwest investments, including the most recent Great Plains' purchase of a 350,000-square-foot Abilene production facility, which opened earlier this year and further expands operations to produce Kubota and Land Pride branded products.

"We have a lot of people to thank for making this possible," Salem said. "The State of Kansas, and particularly the Kansas Department of Commerce, has worked closely with us to ensure that we understand and work with the many programs they have to encourage business development within our state. The Governor's Office, the Salina Economic Development Organization, the City of Salina staff and commissioners have been gracious and supportive of our continued expansion. We are really appreciative of your support."

Salem noted that Great Plains and the community are in partnership together.

"We cannot grow unless our community is healthy, provides a great place for people to not only work but also build their lives outside of work, raise their families, pursue their hobbies, and their recreational pursuits," Salem explained.

"Salina, through private investment, public investment, private and public partnerships has invested heavily in this community. The downtown renovation project, I believe, is over a $175 million investment so far. We have upgrading and expansion of soccer fields, baseball fields. We have strong support of the arts here in Salina. We have excellent regional medical facilities, impressive and up-to-date public school facilities. I think that Salina is an oasis in central Kansas," she continued. "All of these are essential to attracting and retaining great workers and community members, and Great Plains really prides itself on being a partner to such a great community."

A bright future despite mixed emotions

Salina Mayor Mike Hoppock told those assembled this morning that he has mixed emotions.

"As some of you may or may not know, the 750,000-square-foot building that Linda was talking about is the Signify plant, known by most people as Philips Lighting. Signify/Philip has been an important part of the Salina community for over 50 years. The announcement and loss of jobs due to the Signify closing could have been a serious blow to Saline County. I hope the citizens of Saline County understand the magnitude of the purchase and investment being made by Great Plains Manufacturing," Hoppock said.

"As I mentioned Monday at the Schwan's announcement, projects like these do not happen by accident," the mayor continued. "Because of the united efforts of the State of Kansas, the City of Salina, Salina Community Economic Development Organization, and the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, we were able to partner with Great Plains and secure a significant investment in our community and to keep a very large facility from going dark."

Kansas Secretary of Commerce David Toland noted that "Salina's having a big week!"

"It is wonderful to be back here for the second time in four days for a major economic development announcement, particularly because this has been a long time in the making. We are so grateful to Kubota and to Great Plains for seeing what we see here in Salina and this part of the state, which is opportunity," Toland said.

"This project, yes it does involve a transition with the Signify/Philips plant and we are sorry for that, but today we're focused on the future and a future that is bright for our manufacturing workforce here in Salina and in the region," he continued.

"The fact is that as the world faces a new normal, we believe that Kansas is extraordinarily well positioned to succeed and to prosper, particularly as it relates to focusing on supply chain," Toland said. "We want to send a message to any firm, any company that is evaluating what to do right now as it relates to onshoring. We want them to think about Kansas, because of our prime location, because of our reliable infrastructure, and most importantly because of our skilled workforce. It's our people that make the difference here in Kansas and so, you know, what you're going to get in our state is the highest quality, the best customer service, and the best people."

Although she wasn't there in person, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly offered her congratulations to Great Plains and Salina in a video that was played during the news conference.

Sixteen Soldiers of 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery Regiment, 130th Field Artillery Brigade trained to become the Kansas Army National Guard’s newest validated graders for the Army Combat Fitness Test Aug. 4-5 at the Great Plains Joint Training Center in Salina.

In addition to educating and certifying the students on how to conduct and grade the ACFT, which becomes the official Army physical fitness test of record Oct. 1, leaders and instructors hope the course will have the lasting impact of helping to set in motion a shift in Kansas Army National Guard fitness culture.

“This is a train the trainer course,” said Command Sgt. Major Darrian Campbell, command sergeant major of 1st Bn, 161st FA Regt. “The overall intent is for Soldiers to be able to go back to their units and train other people on how to grade Soldiers taking the test. This a new test, this is something new to the Army, and there’s certain education and requirements you have to have to be at the different levels of administering it, supervising it and grading it.”

Staff Sgt. Bronson Shipman, master fitness trainer and ACFT project non-commissioned officer for the state of Kansas, explained that in order to certify as graders, students have to complete all six events of the ACFT, as well as complete a list of other tasks. 

“We go through each event individually and specifically so that the graders know what they’re looking for to prevent injuries and also to know what’s going to count and not count as a repetition,” Shipman said.

Students also walk through how to set up the course lanes and complete a mock ACFT, where the instructors take the test and the students grade. The two-day training concludes with a written exam at the end.

In addition to teaching the students all the technicalities of administering the test and training other graders, Campbell said he hopes the course teaches students not to be intimidated by the ACFT.

“I know there’s a lot of talk,” Campbell said. “People say, ‘that’s going to exclude me,’ ‘I’m going to have to get out,’ It’s going to be too hard,’ ‘I can’t do it.’ But I think that’s mostly people watching from the sidelines. I think once they get involved, they’ll see that they are very capable of performing these exercises.”

Shipman also attested that many Soldiers have expressed apprehension about the new test.

“I hope that students take away the idea that this test is attainable,” Shipman said. “And that they also go back to their units with a positive attitude about the test. There’s a lot of negativity around the test right now. It’s our job to change that mindset and have a more positive attitude. So if these students could go back and say look, the test isn’t that bad. I’m going to show you how to do it. That’s the main thing. As well as trying to get them a little more focused on getting into shape.”

While Shipman and his team of master fitness trainers have the primary goal of setting Soldiers up for success by Oct. 1, more broadly, they also hope to help shift the culture of fitness in the Kansas Army National Guard.

“As civilian Soldiers, it’s easy to get into a sedentary lifestyle because we’re not in the uniform 28 days of each month,” Shipman said. “We all have to change the mindset and be more geared toward fitness. We’re going to have to start training.”

Shipman explained that the current test of record, the Army Physical Fitness Test, could often be passed by Soldiers who only train last minute – the APFT did not require them to maintain high levels of physical readiness throughout the year. But he cautions Soldiers that that strategy will not be effective if they hope to be successful on the ACFT.

“Start training now,” Shipman said. “Go out and research what the test is and start working on those events individually. That way you know what you have to work on to get better at. Be ready.”

Other than increasing levels of physical fitness perennially, Shipman said the ACFT has the additional benefit of helping increase overall Soldier readiness through injury reduction.

“The ACFT is an 80 percent predictor of a Soldier’s ability to perform their job during combat, so if they can successfully pass the ACFT, they are going to be successful in their job, therefore helping to prevent any injuries they might sustain,” Shipman said.

While the responsibility to train properly and pass the ACFT is an individual one, unit leaders also play a roll.

“As a battalion command sergeant major, I want to make sure I’m educated – that I know the test and I know the standards – because I’m the one that is going to be responsible for enforcing those standards,” Campbell said. “I’m out here because I want to experience it and become educated on it, but I also want the Soldiers to look up and see that the command is supporting it and I want to show that it’s important to the force in order to keep our lethality.”

Shipman agreed that leadership can play a roll in shaping the fitness culture of the organization, and suggested that units consider incorporating physical training into their monthly training plans. 

“Those two days might not drastically change a Soldier’s level of physical fitness, but it’s going to teach that Soldier what he or she can do while they’re not at drill in order to get in better shape,” Shipman said.

Shipman, who has trained over 60 graders and administered the ACFT for over 400 Soldiers statewide so far, said physical fitness has played a prominent role in his life since he graduated basic training at 19 years old. Later this month, he will complete his certification as a personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine and he plans to continue his full-time work as a master fitness trainer for the Kansas Army National Guard helping Soldiers achieve their fitness goals, through the advent of the ACFT and beyond.

“It’s an honor to be a part of it,” Shipman said. “It’s a huge transition for the Army overall, so to be on the front lines of it is a good feeling. We are getting a good predictor of how we are as the guard and where we’re at in the state as far as our physical fitness capabilities. It’s been an eye opener for some of the Soldiers. But getting them to actually take the test is helping them realize that it’s not insurmountable.”

Army National Guard takes on fitness culture, prepares for Oct. 1

CRUZE: 4 ways to avoid stress-spending during the pandemic

Today is Thursday, Aug. 13, the 226th day of 2020. There are 140 days left in the year. 

On August 13, 1961, East Germany sealed off the border between Berlin's eastern and western sectors before building a wall that would divide the city for the next 28 years.

Dozier hopes to use same technique to investigate what was being cooked in Kansas' lost city of Etzanoa

From suburbia to cities across the globe, caffeine and wine are often a source of collective comfort: the first for a morning pick-me-up, the latter to unwind. Now a Wichita State University professor has discovered evidence to suggest that even our ancient ancestors enjoyed these drinks.

From six different excavations across central Texas, Dr. Crystal Dozier, assistant professor of anthropology, found pottery with evidence of caffeinated beverages, as well as succinic and tartaric acid, which are associated with grape wine.

“I was looking at pottery from right before the Spanish came to Texas,” Dozier said. “What's really interesting about this time period is that for the first time in this region, we see pottery. That’s not to say that people didn't know how to make pottery, but these were hunters and gatherers, so they're picking up and moving every two weeks. They're not practicing agriculture, but they take the time to make pottery, which you have to build and then schlepp around, which is a really high-investment thing to do. I was really curious about why it was so important to them to start making the pottery.”

The paper about Dozier's research was published in the August issue of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352409X20302418?dgcid=author" target="_blank">Journal&nbsp;of Archaeological Science</a>.&nbsp;

Dozier ground up 54 pieces of pottery — roughly ranging from 500 to 700 years old — to find the chemical markers she’d identified for caffeine and grape wine. The beverages, she said, were likely used in ceremonies or celebrations.

“I noticed that some pottery only showed up at these really large sites, where you also see exchange goods at these large sites or gathering places. I use the term&nbsp;feasting sites,” she said. “You see across the world and throughout time that a feast or party often highlights some kind of liquid medium to help celebrate.”

The caffeine signatures could be one of two possible sources, Dozier said.

“It could be black drink, which is yaupon holly. You can make a tea out of it that has a similar caffeine level to green tea, and this black drink was widely recorded throughout the southeast,” she said.

The other option, though less probable, could be cacao, or chocolate.

“I think this is a less likely option just because we're so far from Mexico, where it would have been grown. That being said, we know that trade networks extended into the southeast and New Mexico, so it is possible that it also extended into Texas,” Dozier said.

Dozier said the caffeine discovery is significant because it’s the first archaeological evidence for caffeinated beverages in the region.&nbsp;

The grape wine findings did not have repeated signatures, meaning &nbsp;each ceramic in which the signature was found &nbsp;was only found in one of three trials , “but it's the first kind of, what I would call a suggestion, that could be possible uses of red wine before the Europeans were here.”

Dozier said she plans to return to further research the grape wine findings.

“Our findings were not super secure in that I didn't have repeat identifications like I did in the caffeine signatures. This is probably because the biomarkers I picked are extremely sensitive and water soluble, so they tend erode away,” she said. “There are other biomarkers. There are other signatures I can look forward to confirming that there was or was not grape wine being produced.”

Dozier said the grape wine discovery could combat a common stereotype of indigenous people in the United States —&nbsp;“the idea that Native Americans didn't have alcohol until the Europeans arrived, and therefore they just went hog wild. It’s a stereotype, and it's really damaging — this idea that somehow there is a biological reason why Native Americans deal with alcoholism.”

Rather, she says, the rate of alcohol abuse among Native Americans is similar to the rate among any economically depressed group of people in the United States.

“Native Americans were making and likely consuming alcohol prior to European colonizers. The effects that we see in the modern era have much more to do with colonialism and poverty than it has to do with the history of making alcoholic drinks,” Dozier said.

Archeology is key to understanding indigenous cultures.

“I really hope that this research inspires us to look into other Native American archaeological cultures looking for these kinds of food practices that aren't recorded in the historical literature or in the ethnographic literature. We only know what people were maybe doing if we look archaeologically,” Dozier said.

The research techniques from this research could inform future investigations at Etzanoa, the excavation site near Arkansas City run by the archeology department at Wichita State.&nbsp;

“I want to use the same kind of research methodology for our established projects here at Wichita State so I can use the same technique to investigate what was being cooked on the pottery at Etzanoa,” Dozier said. “It would be very interesting to know if particularly the use of yaupon holly extending this far north because the plants only grow here under certain circumstances. It would really show that people were curating and growing this as a plant for this purpose.”

WSU prof finds evidence of wine, caffeine in 500-year-old pottery

Following is the Wednesday COVID-19 update from Saline County.

As of today, 290 of Saline County’s cases have recovered. We do have an additional 5 positive cases that have been identified since the Monday, August 10 report. Sadly, we also have been notified of 2 additional deaths.

The total for the county is now 394, with 97 cases that are actively being monitored by the Health Department, and a total of 7 deaths. Salina Regional Health Center last reported that they have 4 hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Salina Regional is a regional hospital, the COVID-19 patient total is not specific to the number of Saline County residents who may be hospitalized. Our dashboard is updated with the latest information.

Health Officer, Jason Tiller, addressed the Saline County Board of County Commissioners yesterday for his two-week review of the County mask resolution as required. Mr. Tiller addressed the two largest rumors that the department has been hearing. Saline County’s case numbers only represent one person, no matter how many times they are tested, they are only counted once. The other major rumor is one of those standing in line and leaving, never being tested, and then later being notified of a positive test result. Mr. Tiller stated, “With 100% accuracy and assurance, that has never happened here. For every positive test result we have, every single person we’ve contacted and interviewed for those results has actually been tested.” As part of his presentation, he also talked about isolation and quarantine and how that is determined because it has been confusing for many. Isolation is for those that are ill (positive case) and quarantine is for those that are close contacts of those that are ill. ●Maximize physical distance (6 feet or more) in public settings
