Twenty-five new law enforcement officers graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on Friday at a ceremony held in KLETC’s Integrity Auditorium.&nbsp;

Alexander Riggins of the Hill City Police Department was the graduating class president. KLETC Instructor of Police and Class Coordinator James Buettgenbach for the 266th was the speaker for the ceremony in KLETC’s Integrity Auditorium.

Ray Boese of the Emporia Police Department was awarded the Welch Academic Award of Excellence for his outstanding grades. Brian Pangburn of the Morris County Sheriff's Office was awarded the Top Shot firearms award.&nbsp;

The new officers were members of the 266th basic training class. The graduates, who began their training in February 2020, represented 21 municipal, county and state law enforcement agencies from across Kansas.

Graduates receive certificates of course completion from KLETC and Kansas law enforcement certification from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority. The training course fulfills the state requirement for law enforcement training. Classroom lectures and hands-on applications help train officers to solve the increasingly complex problems they face in the line of duty.

Established by the Kansas Legislature in 1968, KLETC trains the majority of municipal, county and state law enforcement officers in Kansas and oversees the training of the remaining officers at seven authorized and certified academy programs operated by local law enforcement agencies and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

About 300 officers enroll annually in KLETC 14-week basic training programs. KLETC offers continuing education and specialized training to over 10,000 Kansas officers each year. KLETC is located one mile west and one mile south of Yoder, near Hutchinson, and is a division of University of Kansas Professional &amp; Continuing Education.

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), in conjunction with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT), has revised its list of public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae. 

Since Thursday’s update, Milford Lake Zone A has moved to a warning, while Milford Lake Zones B and C have been downgraded to a watch. Additionally, Agra Lake in Phillips County has been added to the watch list.

When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

●Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.

●Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.

●Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.

●If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

●Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.

A watch means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water. During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

●Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.

●Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.

●Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.

●Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.

 ●Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.

Kansans should be aware that blooms are unpredictable. They can develop rapidly and may float around the lake, requiring visitors to exercise their best judgment. If there is scum, a paint-like surface or the water is bright green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

Saline County investigating COVID-19 exposure at local restaurant

RILEY COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before noon Friday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Buick LaCrosse driven by Sylvia A. Harden, 83, Wichita, was eastbound on the entrance ramp to Kansas 18 from Scenic Drive. 

The driver turned left in the lane of traffic of a 2013 Ford F650 driven by Brad R. Dunlap, 55, Abilene.

The Ford struck the Buick&nbsp; on the driver's side. Both vehicles came to rest on their wheels, partially on the north shoulder and the median.

Harden was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Carlson's Irvin Parkview Funeral Home. Dunlap was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

The man was described as a Hispanic male, mid- to late-30s, with a mustache and beard stubble, wearing a red Kansas City Chief's baseball hat, a gray T-shirt, gray pants with paint splatter, and gray tennis shoes with green laces.

MANHATTAN – Americans have been canning foods at home for more than 100 years. Yet still, says Kansas State University food safety specialist Karen Blakeslee, there’s always something new to learn.&nbsp;

“There are many older methods that are not safe to use,” Blakeslee said. “So, it’s important to stay up to date.”&nbsp;

“There are a variety of mistakes that can lead to serious food safety problems when preserving food at home by canning. A vast majority of canning or sealing failures are due to user error. Just because the jar is sealed, that doesn’t mean the food is safe.”&nbsp;

Some common mistakes that Blakeslee listed include:&nbsp;

●Following old and unsafe recipes, some of which may have been passed down through generations of families.

●Following recipes that have not been tested and approved, or adhere to current USDA guidelines. The Internet is full of untested and unapproved recipes.

●Storing food in an unsafe location, such as a place where it is too hot, cold or moist.

●Not adjusting processing times for altitude.&nbsp;

Blakeslee, coordinator of K-State’s Rapid Response Center for Food Safety, maintains a website,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/preservation/index.html" target="_blank">Preserve it Fresh, Preserve it Safe</a>, with current guidelines for canning.&nbsp;

“In canning, the goal is to produce a safe product and reduce risks of botulism,” Blakeslee said. “Instances of botulism occur most often in home canned foods. Before canning any food, be sure to have all equipment ready to go.”&nbsp;

Some examples of preparing for home canning include examining canning jars so that they are clean and free of cracks or chips; ensuring that you have new lids – “never re-use canning lids as they may not seal,” Blakeslee said – and if using a dial gauge pressure canner, get it tested every year.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/about/stateandareamaps.html" target="_blank">Contact your local extension office</a>&nbsp;to ask about testing a dial gauge pressure canner. Blakeslee said local offices can test four brands: National, Presto, Magic Seal and Maid of Honor pressure canners.&nbsp;

Water bath canning (a lower-temperature process) will safely process high acid foods, such as jelly and fruit. Pressure canning (temperatures of 240 degrees Fahrenheit or higher) must be used for plain vegetables and all meats.”&nbsp;

Think safety first when canning food at home 

The Bennington State Bank (BSB) Thursday announced that its board of directors has unanimously elected Darren Gragg to succeed Burke Matthews as president and CEO of BSB, effective Jan. 31, 2021.

In 1912, Theodore Roosevelt was nominated for president by the Progressive Party (also known as the Bull Moose Party) in Chicago. New Jersey Gov. Woodrow Wilson accepted the Democratic presidential nomination at his summer home in Sea Girt.

Five years ago: Colorado theater shooter James Holmes was spared the death penalty in favor of life in prison after a jury in Centennial failed to agree on whether he should be executed for his murderous attack on a packed movie premiere that left 12 people dead. Former Food and Drug Administration employee Dr. Frances Kelsey, credited with preventing the U.S. distribution of thalidomide, a drug blamed for serious birth defects in the early 1960s, died in London, Ontario, Canada at age 101. Louise Suggs, 91, an LPGA founder and Hall of Famer, died in Sarasota, Florida.

One year ago: President Donald Trump and his wife visited the Dayton, Ohio hospital where many of the victims of a weekend shooting attack had been treated; they then flew to El Paso, where a shooting at a Walmart had killed 22 people. Cyntoia Brown was released early from the Tennessee Prison for Women, where she'd been serving a life sentence for killing a man who had picked her up for sex at the age of 16; Brown, who was now 31, had been championed by celebrities as a symbol of unfair sentencing. In his most aggressive attack yet on the character of the man he hoped to replace, Joe Biden accused President Donald Trump of "fanning the flames of white supremacy." Puerto Rico's Justice Secretary Wanda Vázquez became the island's new governor, just hours after Puerto Rico's Supreme Court declared that the swearing-in of Pedro Pierluisi a week earlier had been unconstitutional.

MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department today reported two additional confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the county total to 151.

Information about the most recent cases, as released by the health department, is as follows.

●Positive case No. 150 is a symptomatic female in her 50s with known exposure and is recovering at home.

●Positive case No. 151 is a symptomatic female in her 70s with known exposure and is recovering at home.

Of the 151 total confirmed cases, 135 have met Kansas Department of Health and Environment recovery guidelines, the health department noted. Currently, the county has no hospitalized cases and has one COVID-19 related death, according to the health department.

TOPEKA—Chief Justice Marla Luckert announced changes in job duties for four Supreme Court staff.

Ashley Jarmer is named general counsel to the chief justice.

She has been a research attorney for the chief justice since August 2019. She previously was a research attorney for Supreme Court Justice Lee Johnson and Court of Appeals Chief Judge Richard Greene.

Jarmer is a native of Cimarron. She graduated summa cum laude from Kansas State University and received her law degree from William &amp; Mary Law School in Williamsburg, Virginia, where she was president of the Honor Council.

Jarmer previously worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation Office of Chief Counsel as a personnel attorney.

He graduated from the University of Kansas School of Law in 2012.Ruhlen worked in bankruptcy law, including a clerkship with now-retired Judge Janice Miller Karlin, chief of the Bankruptcy Court of the District of Kansas and chief of the 10th Circuit Bankruptcy Appellate Panel.
