What would be Kansas’ best life? Well, it would be that blue and red, mask or no mask, this position or that, would all fade away and become, “How are you, my neighbor?”

No matter the outcome of the election, Kansas will still bring us:

That deep orange round orb that feathers into a profusion of pastels almost every dawn and dusk.

The low maintenance and giving nature of the unselfish prairie grasses.

Hiking and biking trails that take us close to the geography we couldn’t recall until we came upon it.

That finger wave that makes you feel pretty special, even connected, despite not knowing the mobile greeter.

The way heels fly off and boots stomp in enthusiasm for that line dance at weddings, the dance that everyone knows.

The power of temperature, light, and moisture to change the color of leaves as they escort us into a new season.

The cheers of September when it’s time for&nbsp;<a href="https://kansassampler.org/8wondersofkansas-cuisine/c-w-porubskys-deli-tavern-topeka">C.W. Porubsky</a>’s perfectly-seasoned chili, and many a kitchen adds cinnamon rolls to accompany their own adaptation of this custom in a bowl.

Homemade butterscotch syrup to lavish upon those made-from-scratch pancakes at Durham’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/Main-Street-Cafe-Bakery-109052997161206/">Main Street Café</a>.

The early morning coziness of the local cafe where the familiar coffee aroma mingles with the truths of the regulars who come in to start their day.

Dedicated linemen who will work in any condition to warm our homes again after a storm leaves us feeling powerless.

The maternal softness that the rolling and lulling hills of the Flint Hills exude.

The dainty wildflowers that can outlast the cracks of rain-starved soil.

The Western Kansas horizon so undisturbed by anything vertical, save grain elevators and wind turbines, that one can feel as insignificant as a ladybug on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bigbrutus.org/">Big Brutus</a>&nbsp;or that you are caught in something so grand that a “wow” quietly crosses your lips.

Giggles and awe from first-time summit-seekers who find that a “man on the mountain” has put his art and soul on display at&nbsp;<a href="https://kansassampler.org/8wondersofkansas-geography/mount-sunflower-wallace-county">Mount Sunflower</a>, the highest point in the state.

Vestiges of our most prehistoric days when the solid earth we plant our lives on now&nbsp;<a href="https://kansaspublicradio.org/kpr-news/oceans-kansas-book-explores-animals-ancient-sea">was once a sea</a>&nbsp;swirling our future round and round.

The rural mail box that brings us that handwritten note that can outdo the most prolific digital transmission.

All these things were here last week and will be here next week. If we can all be as patient as the farmer who waits for the field to dry and the rain to come, we can make it through this time together, as Kansans, as people who chose this state to find their best life.

Windy conditions will be expected over the next few days with Sunday being the windiest day, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita.

Fire danger will also be high today and very high Sunday, NWS noted. Outdoor burning should be avoided due to these conditions. 

Monday will continue windy, but showers and thunderstorms will become possible in the late afternoon and evening. Temperatures will fall overnight Monday, NWS reported.

NWS: Warm and windy weekend with added fire danger

TOPEKA – (November 6, 2020) – The Tower Mental Health Foundation has awarded a total of $39,000 in grants to 26 community mental health centers to assist with providing services across Kansas.

In lieu of the Foundation’s usual grant application process, the board approved $1,500&nbsp;cash awards to help offset some of the extra expenses incurred by the community mental health centers because of the pandemic.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The Tower Mental Health Foundation of Kansas was created as a result of an agreement between the attorney general’s office and the Menninger Foundation in 2007. It offers support to organizations that provide mental health services in Kansas. The attorney general is the sole member of the Foundation, which is staffed by the office of the attorney general. The Foundation’s board of directors is composed of nine Kansans with a keen interest in mental health issues. Dr. Walter Menninger serves as an emeritus member of the board.

Abilene man among Kansas Lottery second-chance promotion winners

In an effort to allow students a portion of the rest that spring break traditionally offers, Kansas Wesleyan has announced that it will create a pair of off days in its spring 2021 academic calendar.

KWU classes will be cancelled Tuesday, Feb. 16, and Thursday, March 11, to allow students and faculty an opportunity for rest and mental relaxation. The campus will remain open on these days to continue to provide student services. In addition, no classes will be held on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day or Good Friday, days the campus will be closed. That means that students will have days off during weeks two, six, nine and 12 of the spring semester.

“Many institutions, including KWU, have cancelled spring break due to COVID-19,” said Dr. Damon Kraft, KWU provost. “This is the correct decision, one made in the best interest of student, faculty and staff safety. However, we at Kansas Wesleyan understand that spring break is not just a time for fun activities, but an important time of rest. We hope these two days provide a small portion of that important rest to our students and faculty.”

In 2018, a gunman killed 12 people at a country music bar in Thousand Oaks, Calif., before apparently taking his own life as officers closed in; the victims included a man who had survived the mass shooting at a country music concert in Las Vegas. After more than a year of blistering attacks from President Donald Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions was pushed out of that post. 

Ten years ago: Scientists at the world's largest atom smasher, the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, recreated the state of matter shortly after the Big Bang using collisions of lead ions. Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia won the men's title at the New York City Marathon in 2:08:14 in his debut at the distance. Kenya's Edna Kiplagat won the women's race in 2:28:20 for her first major marathon championship.

Five years ago: The leaders of China and Taiwan met for the first time since the formerly bitter Cold War foes split amid civil war 66 years earlier; Chinese President Xi Jinping and Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou hailed the meeting in Singapore as a sign of a new stability in relations. The license plates that were on the limousine carrying President John F. Kennedy when he was assassinated in Dallas in 1963 were sold at auction for $100,000. Yitzhak Navon, 94, who was a top aide to Israel's founding father David Ben-Gurion and who served as Israel's president from 1978 to 1983, died in Jerusalem.

One year ago: Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that he would try to reclaim his old Senate seat from Alabama. (The effort ended in defeat in a Republican primary runoff.) Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson announced that he was retiring after more than three years as the city's top cop. (Johnson would be fired weeks later by Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who cited "ethical lapses" including lying about a recent incident in which Johnson was found asleep at the wheel of his car after having drinks.) MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department today reported 77 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the county total to 657.

Of that total, 503 have either met Kansas Department of Health and Environment recovery guidelines or died, and six of the active cases are hospitalized, the health department noted.

Saline County: 74 new COVID-19 cases; 2 additional deaths

Two guns and $1,917 in coins are missing after a break-in in northwestern Saline County Thursday.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that a resident in the 7700 block of West Santanta Road went home Thursday to find a back window broken and the following items missing from the residence.

A Remington .22 caliber MP6 rifle valued at $300

Coins, guns stolen from northwest Saline County residence

Saline County is moving ahead with the jail project after preliminary results from Tuesday's general election indicated voters approved the construction of a new jail.

The preliminary vote of 12,444 to 10,600 indicated approval of a proposed one-half-percent sales tax to fund the project. The Saline County election results are scheduled to be certified, thus making them official, on Nov. 16.

“I truly appreciate the support shown to my office by passing the sales tax to fund the new facility. This facility will be more than a jail, it will include space for much needed programs and services that we simply can’t provide," said Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan. "Moving into a modern facility will be safer for staff, inmates and the public. Thank you Saline County citizens for showing your support on Election Day.”

The one-half-percent sales tax is scheduled to be effective April 1, 2021. A timeline is being developed for bond issuance for this project, the county indicated today. 

The sales tax would pay for the general obligation bonds that would be needed to finance the construction of the facility, not to exceed $89,655,000, and would end once the bonds are paid off, as required by law. The county's financial advisors for the project have estimated that the bonds could be paid off in 15 to 20 years, depending on sales tax revenues received.

The sales tax increase is estimated to generate approximately $6 million annually. The difference in sales tax paid on a $100 purchase after the tax increase goes into effect is 50 cents.

"Approving the one-half percent sales tax for the purpose of building a new jail is a huge step forward for Saline County and the City of Salina. This will help bring the community further into the 21st century," said Saline County Commission Chair Robert Vidricksen. "A huge thank you to everyone who worked on this project over the past several years.  The biggest thank you goes to the voters who recognized the importance of this project.  Now we need to roll up our sleeves and go to work and see the project completed."

The first steps in the project will include site acquisition and building design. An estimated timeline for the project includes groundbreaking in the fall of 2021 and project completion in the fall of 2023.

Saline County citizens who are interested in learning more about the project can see preliminary design information at <a href="http://www.saline.org/Jail-Project-2020">www.saline.org/Jail-Project-2020</a>. They also can sign up to receive updates on the project as it progresses.

Saline County resident claims $538K lottery prize

A teen was arrested after allegedly taking a car from a north Salina residence Thursday and then wrecking it.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning that at approximately 11:15 a.m. Thursday, officers were sent to the area of North Fourth Street and East Otis Avenue for the report of a vehicle accident. Upon arrival, they located a 2004 Nissan Maxima with no license plate on top of a chain link fence in the backyard of 1220 North Fifth Street. 

According to Forrester, the 16-year-old female driver fled the scene and was located on North Third Street by an officer.

Forrester explained that the girl turned onto East Otis Avenue from North Fourth Street at a high rate of speed, lost control of the vehicle, and overcorrected, causing the Maxima to leave the roadway on the south side of East Otis Avenue.

The owner of the vehicle was contacted and advised the vehicle should have been parked at 211 West Grand Avenue with the keys in it and no one had permission to drive it, Forrester reported. 

The girl was arrested on the following requested charges, he noted. 

Operating a motor vehicle without a valid license

Duty upon striking an unattended vehicle or other property

According to Forrester, the Maxima sustained heavy front-end damage, estimated at $1,100. The fence was destroyed, he added.

Teen arrested after car crashes into north Salina backyard

Three Salina teens were transported to Salina Regional Health Center (SRHC) after a single-vehicle rollover accident west of town Thursday morning.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that Hunter Steinbruck, 17, of Salina was driving a 2003 Jeep Liberty westbound in the 5200 block of West Kansas Highway 140 when he lost control and the Liberty left the north side of the roadway and rolled at least twice.

Hunter Steinbruck, his sister, Nyctasia Steinbruck, 16, of Salina, and Lydia Graves, 14, of Salina, all received minor cuts in the accident, however were transported to SRHC to be checked out, Soldan said. All three were properly restrained at the time of the accident, Soldan noted.

DAVE SAYS: Refinance in Baby Step 2?; Which comes first?

Local officials plan to honor Salina's founders and veterans next week.

Representatives from the Smoky Hill Museum and the City of Salina will gather on Tuesday 11:30 a.m. to honor town founders and other pioneers buried locally, many of whom are veterans, with a&nbsp;wreath laying ceremony&nbsp;during Veterans’ Day week.&nbsp;

The 20-minute event will take place at Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Block A, off of East Iron Avenue or north Marymount Road. The public is invited. Among Salina’s founders to be honored that day is veteran Col. William Phillips, who worked as a war correspondent for Horace Greeley’s&nbsp;New York Tribune&nbsp;and as a commander during the Civil War.

Other town founders to be honored include Alexander M. and Christina Phillips Campbell and David L. Phillips. Salina settlers to be honored who also served in the military include Margaret and Benjamin J.F. Hanna, who started Salina’s first newspaper, and Oscar and Johanna Seitz, who came from Germany in the 1860s and started several longtime businesses bearing their family name.

Salina Mayor Mike Hoppock will share remarks about town founders’ civic and military contributions before laying a commemorative wreath at each grave. The fresh-greenery commemorative wreaths are donated by BEL Tree Farm and the Michelle and Aaron Peck family. The ceremony will conclude with a Veteran’s Day and communitywide prayer of blessing, given by the Very Rev. David B. Hodges, dean of Christ Episcopal Cathedral, a downtown-Salina historic church.

 </figure>Local officials plan to honor Salina's founders and veterans next week.Representatives from the Smoky Hill Museum and the City of Salina will gather on Tuesday 11:30 a.m. to honor town founders and other pioneers buried locally, many of whom are veterans, with a&nbsp;wreath laying ceremony&nbsp;during Veterans’ Day week.&nbsp;The 20-minute event will take place at Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Block A, off of East Iron Avenue or north Marymount Road. The public is invited. Among Salina’s founders to be honored that day is veteran Col. William Phillips, who worked as a war correspondent for Horace Greeley’s&nbsp;New York Tribune&nbsp;and as a commander during the Civil War.Other town founders to be honored include Alexander M. and Christina Phillips Campbell and David L. Phillips. Salina settlers to be honored who also served in the military include Margaret and Benjamin J.F. Hanna, who started Salina’s first newspaper, and Oscar and Johanna Seitz, who came from Germany in the 1860s and started several longtime businesses bearing their family name.Salina Mayor Mike Hoppock will share remarks about town founders’ civic and military contributions before laying a commemorative wreath at each grave. The fresh-greenery commemorative wreaths are donated by BEL Tree Farm and the Michelle and Aaron Peck family. The ceremony will conclude with a Veteran’s Day and communitywide prayer of blessing, given by the Very Rev. David B. Wreath laying ceremony to honor Salina founders, veterans
