The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating a theft from a residence east of Salina.

Sometime between 10 a.m. Saturday and 1:54 p.m. Thursday, someone forced open a garage door at a residence in the 3000 block of South Holmes Road, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. 

A red Craftsman 12 gallon, 6 horsepower air compressor, valued at $250 was taken, he said.

Sheriff: Air compressor stolen from residence east of Salina

A Wichita man was arrested after a pursuit through part of south Salina Thursday morning.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus reported this morning that officers were sent to the 2700 block of South Ninth Street at 10:12 a.m. Thursday for the report of a suspected intoxicated driver who was operating a white 2017 Ford F-150.

A vehicle pursuit was initiated by a Saline County Sheriff’s Office employee prior to police personnel arriving in the area, Hanus noted.  Police officers took over the pursuit in the area of Centennial Road and Sunflower Drive, he added.  

According to Hanus, the driver failed to stop for a traffic control device, exceeding the posted speed limit, and crossing the center line of the roadway. During the pursuit, a vehicle tire-deflating device was deployed and one of the pickup’s tires was deflated.

Hanus reported that the vehicle did come to a stop in the 2600-2700 block of Centennial Road, however, the operator of the vehicle refused to exit the vehicle during the high risk traffic stop. A police canine was deployed and pulled the driver from the vehicle, he explained. 

The driver, identified as James T. Batterton, 61 of Wichita, was transported to Salina Regional Health Center and treated for lacerations, Hanus noted.

According to Hanus, Batterton was arrested on the following requested charges.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita, the forecast high temperatures for Friday will be about 10 degrees cooler than yesterday at most locations, but still well above normal. Normal highs are in the mid 50s.

Rain is probable over most of the area on Saturday, NWS noted. The clouds and rain will keep high temperatures in the upper 40s. On Sunday, morning clouds and lingering light rain in southeast Kansas will give way to sunshine in the afternoon. Sunday afternoon temperatures will climb into the lower 50s.

But if you do some research and buy wisely, you can get a good year or two out of a $1,500 car. DAVE SAYS: Save up to get out of the rust bucket

Nearly half of those staying home say it is because of COVID

WICHITA – A new survey by AAA indicates that a large majority of Kansas residents will not be traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday, and 47% of those staying home say it is because of COVID-19 concerns.

“Given the recent surge in COVID-19 and the strong urging of public health officials for everyone to stay home for the holiday, the Thanksgiving travel landscape continues to change,” said Shawn Steward, spokesman for AAA Kansas. “With that in mind, AAA conducted a new poll asking Kansas residents who have decided against traveling for the holiday whether COVID-19, specifically, was the reason - and more almost half – or 47% – said yes.”

The new AAA survey provides this snapshot:

•86% of Kansas residents surveyed will be staying home for the Thanksgiving holiday…

-47% say they are not traveling because of COVID-19

-53% say they were not planning to travel anyway. 

•88% of Kansas residents surveyed said they perceive traveling at this time poses a risk…

-37% calling that risk ‘significant.’

Of the survey respondents still planning to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday:

•2% plan to travel by some ‘other’ mode of transportation (bus, train)

The AAA survey of 742 Kansas residents was conducted Nov. 12/13 by Public Policy Polling. The survey has a margin of error of +/- 3.6%.

Of those who do still plan to travel, most will be driving to their holiday destinations so motorists should expect they’ll have company on the roads.

“Although Thanksgiving is typically a driving holiday, it should be noted that, since the beginning of COVID, those who have decided to travel this year have predominantly done so by car where they can have greater control over their environment and the ability to modify plans at the last minute,” Steward added.

AAA reminds those hitting the road to plan their route ahead. To minimize the number of stops along the way, pack meals, extra snacks and drinks in addition to an emergency roadside kit – including extra masks and wipes.

For Americans who make the personal decision to travel for the holiday, it is important to know the risks involved and ways to keep yourself and others safe. In addition to CDC guidance, travelers should also be aware of local and state travel restrictions, including testing requirements and quarantine orders in the states you are traveling to, through and also upon your return.

No Holiday for AAA Emergency Roadside Rescue

Despite the drop in number of people traveling for the holiday, AAA is expecting to respond to a steady stream of calls for Emergency Roadside Service. Last year over the Thanksgiving holiday, AAA Kansas responded to more than 1,100 calls for help, across the state.

“COVID-19 adds an extra layer of complexity to all interactions, including roadside emergency calls, so this year it is more important than ever for all motorists to ensure that their vehicles are road-ready, even if they are just driving across town,” said Steward.

Road Trippers to be met with Lower Gas Prices

Those who do decide to hit the road for Thanksgiving will find cheaper gas prices. On average, gas prices nationally are nearly 50 cents cheaper than this time last year, with October averages the lowest in more than 15 years.

Here in Kansas, the average price of regular unleaded gas is $1.88 per gallon, which is six cents cheaper than a month ago and 46 cents cheaper than last year at this time.

•Plan Ahead.&nbsp;Check with state and local authorities where you are, along your route, and at your planned destination to learn about local circumstances and any restrictions that may be in place.

•Follow Public Health Guidance.&nbsp;Consistent use of face masks combined with social distancing (at least 6 feet) and regular handwashing are the best ways to lower your risk of contracting COVID-19. Be sure to pack face masks, disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer and a thermometer to help protect and monitor your health. Also pack water and extra snacks to reduce the need to stop along your trip.

•Verify Before You Go.&nbsp;Call ahead to minimize any last minute surprises. &nbsp;Hotels –&nbsp;Prior to any hotel stay, call ahead to ensure your hotel is open and ask what precautions they are taking to protect guests. Ask about social distancing protocols like capacity reductions in common spaces, hotel staff requirements to wear masks at all times and if all amenities are available, like restaurant dining.

-Car rentals –&nbsp;If renting a car, ask what has been done to clean the vehicle. For extra peace of mind, use disinfecting wipes to wipe down door handles, steering wheels, shifters and control panels.

AAA anticipates Thanksgiving air travel will see the largest one-year decrease on record.

Several airlines have been waiving change fees for would-be Thanksgiving travelers who decide not to go at this time.

If flying, AAA reminds air travelers that in-flight amenities, including food and beverage services, may not be available. Also, as a precaution, wipe down your seat, armrest, belt buckle and tray table using disinfecting wipes.

AAA National Thanksgiving holiday forecast

Based on mid-October economic forecast models, before the newest surge in COVID cases nationwide, AAA would have expected up to 50 million Americans to travel for Thanksgiving – a drop from 55 million in 2019 – based on previous projections. However, as the holiday approaches and Americans monitor the public health landscape, the actual number of holiday travelers is expected to be lower than we have seen in years.

AAA provides automotive, travel, and insurance services to 60 million members nationwide and nearly 347,000 members in Kansas. <h2>Nearly half of those staying home say it is because of COVID</h2>WICHITA – A new survey by AAA indicates that a large majority of Kansas residents will not be traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday, and 47% of those staying home say it is because of COVID-19 concerns.“Given the recent surge in COVID-19 and the strong urging of public health officials for everyone to stay home for the holiday, the Thanksgiving travel landscape continues to change,” said Shawn Steward, spokesman for AAA Kansas. “With that in mind, AAA conducted a new poll asking Kansas residents who have decided against traveling for the holiday whether COVID-19, specifically, was the reason - and more almost half – or 47% – said yes.”The new AAA survey provides this snapshot:•86% of Kansas residents surveyed will be staying home for the Thanksgiving holiday…-47% say they are not traveling because of COVID-19-53% say they were not planning to travel anyway. •88% of Kansas residents surveyed said they perceive traveling at this time poses a risk…-37% calling that risk ‘significant.’Of the survey respondents still planning to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday:•84% plan to drive•14% plan to fly•2% plan to travel by some ‘other’ mode of transportation (bus, train)The AAA survey of 742 Kansas residents was conducted Nov. 12/13 by Public Policy Polling. Kansas Wesleyan’s speech and debate team continued its season earlier this month, competing in the 39th Annual Pioneer Trails Tournament. 

The event was held virtually and KWU placed third overall, with solid performances in parliamentary debate and individual events.

During the parliamentary debate tournament, the pairings of Abby Wray (Wichita) and Madi Mitchell (Mulvane), and Bryce Boyd (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and Savannah Bonilla (Salina) each went undefeated, closing out the final round.

As the need for blood donations continues to become ever-more critical, the American Red Cross is partnering with Eagle Radio to both raise awareness and funding for the organization.

In conjunction with the Robert E &amp; Patricia A. Schmidt Foundation, Eagle Radio markets in Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri will also be raising funds in an effort to help bolster the Red Cross vehicle fleet.

Donations will help the Red Cross purchase new community emergency vehicles that deliver critical blood needs across the region.

K-State’s Blakeslee outlines ways to keep food safe and reduce cook’s stress&nbsp;

MANHATTAN – The coronavirus pandemic means many of us will gather in smaller groups than usual for Thanksgiving. That may also mean there will be more people preparing their first turkey with all the trimmings. Whether you’re a complete rookie or an experienced cook, chances are that you don’t prepare a holiday turkey and multiple side dishes every day. &nbsp;

Kansas State University food safety specialist Karen Blakeslee says there are ways to avoid last-minute stress and keep food safe when putting it all together. &nbsp;

“Plan a simple meal to reduce extra stress,” she said. “For a smaller group, buy a smaller turkey or even a turkey breast. Cornish hens would be a good substitute.” &nbsp;

One way to share the day if you can’t be together is to have a recipe exchange of holiday favorites, she added. &nbsp;

Blakeslee, the coordinator of the K-State Research and Extension&nbsp;<a href="http://www.rrc.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Rapid Response Center</a>, provided these tips for before and after the holiday meal:&nbsp;

“Remember, take time to plan out the meal, keep safe food handling tips in mind, and enjoy your time with family and friends,” Blakeslee said.&nbsp;

 <li>Make a list well ahead of the holiday.&nbsp;Include a timeline when activities should happen, whether five days before the meal, two days before or two hours before. Will the turkey go in the oven? In a countertop roaster? If the turkey will take up oven space, think about other foods you’ll prepare and how. Utilize your stovetop, slow cooker or electric pressure cooker. &nbsp;</li><li>Wash your hands&nbsp;often throughout food preparation. &nbsp;</li><li>If you want a fresh turkey, order it ahead so your store will have it ready.&nbsp;Pick up the fresh turkey one or two days before preparation. &nbsp;</li><li>A frozen turkey can be purchased much earlier.&nbsp;Store it in the freezer until it’s time to thaw and cook it. Watch for sales at this time of year. &nbsp;</li><li>How long to thaw the turkey depends on the size of the turkey.&nbsp;Plan for a 12- to 16-pound turkey to thaw for a full week in the refrigerator. If thawing a smaller one, move it from the freezer to the refrigerator the weekend before Thanksgiving. &nbsp;</li><li>Forgot to thaw the bird in advance?&nbsp;Submerge it in clean, cool water in a large pot, but change the water every 30 minutes or so. This takes about 30 minutes per pound as opposed to several days in the refrigerator. Never thaw any meat at room temperature. &nbsp;</li><li>If you forget to thaw the frozen turkey, it can be cooked from a frozen state, but it will take about 1-1/2 times the amount of time that it would take to cook a thawed turkey. &nbsp;</li><li>When prepping the turkey, there’s no need to rinse it.&nbsp;Food scientists say rinsing any meat or poultry can splash water with bacteria on countertops and other foods. Cooking it properly will take care of any potential bacteria. &nbsp;</li><li>Cook turkey at 325 degrees F or higher until a meat thermometer inserted in the meatiest area, typically the thigh, shows 165 degrees F.&nbsp;Take readings in a couple of places. &nbsp;</li><li>Cover the turkey with a lid or aluminum foil to ensure consistent cooking.&nbsp;Take the lid or foil off toward the end of cooking for extra browning. &nbsp;</li><li>Don’t rely on pop-up thermometers only.&nbsp;Pop-up thermometers that come with some turkeys indicate temperature, but not the true temperature of the innermost part of the turkey. These can pop up before the bird is cooked through. &nbsp;</li><li>Making stuffing?&nbsp;Bake in a separate pan from the turkey, so it easily reaches (also required) 165 degrees F. If you stuff the bird, stuff it loosely. Packing it tightly slows down the time to reach 165 degrees F. &nbsp;</li><li>Let the turkey “rest” for 15-20 minutes when it comes out of the oven.&nbsp;It helps the juices reincorporate into the meat. &nbsp;</li>
 </ul>After the meal&nbsp;<ul>
 <li>To help prevent foodborne illness, don’t let food sit out more than two hours after it comes out of the oven or off the stove.&nbsp;That invites potential bacterial growth and no one wants foodborne illness after a nice holiday meal. &nbsp;</li><li>Keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot.&nbsp;Avoid leaving perishable foods in the temperature danger zone, 40-140 degrees F, for more than two hours. &nbsp;</li><li>Turkey meat will chill faster if you take the meat off the bones.&nbsp;Save the bones in the refrigerator or freezer to make turkey soup. &nbsp;</li><li>Store leftover foods in a flat, wide container (about 2 inches high) before refrigerating if possible.&nbsp;That helps it chill faster which keeps bacteria from growing. Freeze leftovers that cannot be used within three to four days.&nbsp;</li>

The Saline County Commission in its capacity as the county Board of Health is scheduled to meet Friday to consider implementing additional restrictions to combat COVID-19.

The meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 West Ash Street. Salina Media Connection is scheduled to telecast the meeting live on Cox Cable Channel 20, as well as on Roku and AppleTV.

The commissioners are scheduled to meet with Jason Tiller, county health officer/health department director, to consider a proposed health order to implement additional restrictions.

On Monday, the county reported 126 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the previous report on Friday. On Wednesday, the county reported an additional 121 confirmed cases. According to the county's Wednesday report, 492 active cases are being monitored by the Saline County Health Department. As of the Wednesday report, 17 Saline County residents had died due to COVID-19.

Comfort's Salute to Service honors Dr. Denise Weiss

SALINE COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before 9:30 a.m. Thursday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1997 Honda Passport driven by Justin Maurice&nbsp;Anthony, 22, Salina, was westbound on Interstate 70 just east of Niles Road.

&nbsp;The SUV left the roadway to the right, entered the north ditch, rolled multiple times and ejected the driver. A passenger Caitlynn Nicole Drowns, 22, Salina, was entrapped.

Anthony was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home.&nbsp; EMS transported Drowns to Salina Regional Health Center.

Anthony was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

A grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation
(KDOT) will support overtime enforcement efforts.&nbsp; While all Kansas traffic laws will be
enforced, this extra provision will be aggressively targeting and removing impaired
drivers from our roads.

According
to KDOT, the day before Thanksgiving sees more impairment-related
crashes than any other day of the year.&nbsp;
Those who choose to drive under the influence of alcohol or other drugs,
are a danger to all they share the road with–their passengers, other motorists
and their passengers, bicyclists, and pedestrians.&nbsp; Impaired driving crashes tend to be more
severe.&nbsp; On average, across Kansas, three persons are injured every day, and
one person is killed every four days
in alcohol/drug-related crashes.&nbsp; Vehicle
occupants in alcohol- or other drug-related crashes are over 2 ½ times more likely to be injured or killed than those
involved in crashes where alcohol or other drugs were not a factor.&nbsp; &nbsp;

week across Kansas, more than 250 drivers are arrested for choosing to drive impaired

A DUI conviction will result in jail time, the
suspension or revocation of driver’s license, a fine of $500 to $2,500, participation
in an alcohol or other drug treatment program and, where alcohol is cited as a
contributing factor, the purchase and installation of an ignition interlock
device by the offender. &nbsp;This device
prevents the vehicle from starting if alcohol is present in the driver’s
breath.&nbsp; All of this is in addition to
thousands of dollars more for bail, court costs, and attorney fees.&nbsp;

Local law enforcement agencies joining in Thanksgiving Safe Arrival

A fire Wednesday afternoon destroyed a historic Saline County residence, leaving a family of five without a house.

A passerby noticed flames coming from the house at 8853 East Cloud and reported the fire shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. By the time firefighters arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames, he said. 

The house was owned by Amanda and Eric Puvogel. No one but a cat was home at the time, he added. The cat has not been found.

The house, built in the 1890s, had been completely restored, Soldan said.

Buffeted by gusting winds, the fire quickly spread to a chicken coop, a Chevrolet Silverado, and a Morton Building on the property, he said. 

At the time of the fire, winds were gusting at 48-51 mph, according to a report from the Salina Regional Airport weather station.

Total loss was estimated at $750,000, Soldan said.

Because of the quickly spreading fire, firefighters from Rural Fire District 1, Rural Fire District 5, and the Solomon Fire Department responded to the blaze, Soldan said.

An official cause of the fire had not yet been determined.

McPHERSON – McPherson College is among the 51 inaugural member institutions of the Liberal Arts Colleges Racial Equity Leadership Alliance recently announced by the University of Southern California Race and Equity Center.

The USC Race and Equity Center works with professionals in educational institutions and corporations to strategically develop and achieve equity goals, better understand and correct climate problems, avoid and recover from racial crises, and cultivate sustainable cultures of inclusion and respect.

McPherson College has participated in the USC Race and Equity Center’s&nbsp;Campus Climate Survey since 2019, and as a member of the new Alliance will have access to a number of additional resources developed by the Center.

“McPherson College understands the importance of equity at all levels on our campus,” President Michael Schneider said. “Having access to the research and organizational resources of the USC Race and Equity Center will provide us with powerful tools as we continue to improve our strategies and practical approaches surrounding diversity and inclusion. I am looking forward to how this collaboration will help us better serve our students and community.”

As a member of the new Alliance, McPherson College can participate in 12 eConvenings, professional development sessions that focus on particular aspects of racial equity, conducted by nationally respected leaders in race relations. The Center is also developing an online repository of resources and tools for Alliance members that includes equity-related rubrics, readings, case studies, videos, and other resources. Every employee across all levels at each of the Alliance institutions will have full access to the virtual resource portal. Additionally, Alliance members will participate in two new workplace climate surveys in addition to the student survey.

Beyond the resources available to Alliance members, the presidents of each member college will meet quarterly to share strategies, seek advice, and identify ways to leverage the Alliance for collective impact on racial equity in higher education. The presidents will also come together occasionally to craft rapid responses to urgent racial issues confronting the nation, and will collaboratively determine what to do, how to respond on their campus, and communicate in a unified voice to policymakers, journalists, and other audiences.

McPherson College’s most recent efforts to become a more inclusive campus include working with the Kansas Leadership Center to diagnose and engage the campus in solutions to develop a more inclusive culture through meaningful dialogue, training, and new initiatives. A campus task force meets regularly to evaluate progress on its goals, which include engaging and inclusive programming, retention of underrepresented students, more diverse applicant pools, ongoing education and conversations with employees, and serving as leaders in the community.

The college has also supported diversity and inclusion training for all student leaders, as well as any interested student, through the Student Government Association.&nbsp;The training has expanded this year to include all Residence Advisors and Orientation Leaders, and academic mentors.&nbsp;A student workgroup began meeting over the summer to discuss actions that the college can implement to support student efforts in creating and promoting antiracism activities, and a student-initiated organization, VOCAL (Voices Of Change And Leadership,) has facilitated campus-wide conversations this semester.
