NWS updates winter storm warnings, winter weather advisories

The forecasts have been updated for the winter storm sweeping into the area.

Winter storm warnings

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita has issued a winter storm warning in effect through midnight tonight for the following counties in our area.

Ellsworth County

Lincoln County

Heavy snow is expected. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches expected, with higher amounts near 12 inches possible. Additionally, ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch are possible.

Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are expected, causing significant reductions to visibility.

Heavy snow will make travel very difficult at times, and will impact the morning and evening commutes. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Isolated power outages are possible.

NWS in Wichita has issued a winter storm warning in effect until midnight tonight for Saline County.

Heavy snow is expected. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches is expected, along with ice accumulations of one to two tenths of an inch. Higher snowfall amounts of 8 to 10 inches is possible across northern Saline County.

Snowfall rates up to 1 inch per hour are possible, causing significant reductions to visibility at times. The combination of snow and ice will increase the risk of impacts.

Heavy snow will make travel very difficult at times, and will impact the morning and evening commutes. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Isolated power outages are possible.

NWS in Hastings, Neb., has issued a winter storm warning in effect until 3 a.m. Tuesday for the following counties in our area.

Jewell County

Mitchell County

Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations generally 6 to 12 inches, with the overall-highest amounts generally east of a line from St. Paul to Alma Nebraska, to Plainville Kansas. North-northeast winds will increase during the day and average 15 to 25 mph with gusts as high as 30 to 35 mph, promoting some blowing and drifting snow, and perhaps near-blizzard conditions at times.

The majority of snow will accumulate during the day, then gradually decrease in intensity and coverage tonight. Northerly winds will also gradually diminish overnight. Please note that snow may not end completely overnight, as light snow or flurries could linger right on into the day Tuesday.

Travel could be very difficult. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

NWS in Topeka has issued a winter weather warning in effect until midnight tonight for the following counties in our area.

Clay County

Cloud County

Ottawa County

Republic County

Heavy snow, possibly mixed with freezing rain at times. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 11 inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze are expected. A light wintry mixture early this morning will rapidly give way to heavy snow before sunrise. The period of heaviest snow will occur between 6 am and 6pm, with the region of heavy snow moving from southwest to northeast in this timeframe. Light snow could linger into the evening hours.

The snow may fall at a very high rate with amounts over 1 inch per hour, making it very difficult to keep roads clear. Winds will initially be from the northeast and slowly shift to the north through the day with speeds of 15 to 20 mph gusting up to 30 mph. This could lead to some blowing snow as well.

Winter weather advisories

NWS in Wichita has issued a winter weather advisory in effect until 9 p.m. Monday for the following counties in our area.

Marion County

McPherson County

Mixed precipitation is expected. Light accumulations of ice and snow are possible.

The greatest risk of impacts from ice and snow will be across northern portions of McPherson and Marion counties.

Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute.

NWS in Topeka has issued a winter weather advisory in effect until midnight tonight for Dickinson County.

Mixed precipitation is expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 6 inches, highest on the north side of the advisory, and ice accumulations of up to a tenth of an inch are forecast. Northeast to north winds gusting up to 25 mph could also cause some blowing snow.

A light wintry mixture early this morning will intensify by sunrise. The period of heaviest precipitation will be between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., with light snow or freezing drizzle possibly lingering through the evening.
