Souvenir Stiefel face masks are on sale for $10. Only a limited number of the masks are available, so please reserve yours by calling the Stiefel at 785-827-1998 or emailing adecker@stiefeltheatre.org. If there are masks remaining, they also will be available for sale at the lighting event.

The top of the original tower was destroyed by lightning in the 1950s. The tower was restored to be exactly as it was originally built in 1931, according to information from Jane Gates, Stiefel executive director.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for Saline County Rural Water District 2.

The advisory was issued because of&nbsp;a loss of pressure in the system due to a line break.&nbsp;Failure to maintain adequate pressure can lead to a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from Saline Co RWD 2 indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

Boil water advisory rescinded for Saline County RWD 2

Colder air is moving into the area and bringing with it chances for a bit of precipitation.

Precipitation may begin to develop across parts of central and eastern Kansas as early as late tonight, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita. The precipitation type will be mostly rain across eastern Kansas, with a rain/snow mix possible across north-central Kansas, however snow accumulation tonight is not expected, NWS noted.

During the day Wednesday, precipitation will begin to spread south and east, impacting more of the area. The best chance of seeing precipitation for much of the day is across far eastern Kansas, with more scattered activity to the west, NWS reported. Where snow mixes in along the Interstate 70 corridor, snow accumulations are expected to be light, if any at all, NWS added.

Light precipitation will linger well into Wednesday night, possibly not ending until early Thursday morning. According to NWS, as colder air moves in, the precipitation may begin to mix with, or change to, snow and freezing rain. The best chance of seeing some light accumulations of ice or snow will be across eastern Kansas, NWS explained. 

At this time, the impact from wintry weather looks low, NWS reported.

NWS: Colder air and precipitation moving into area

A Salina man was arrested Sunday evening after a hit-and-run incident in the central part of the city.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning that officers were sent to the intersection of East Crawford Street and South Ohio Street at approximately 7:40 p.m. Sunday for the report of a hit-and-run accident.

It was reported that a white pickup had been traveling southbound on South Ohio Street and had struck two vehicles at the intersection and then proceeded southbound, Forrester explained. A witness provided a tag number: KS 883BCP, he noted.

According to Forrester, the two vehicles were:

●A 2013 Hyundai Genesis, driven by Jagger Vilardell, 21, of Salina. The vehicle had disabling damage to right rear and had to be towed from scene.

●A 1997 Nissan Maxima, driven by Laura Rice, 50, of Salina. The vehicle had damage to left rear and was towed from scene. 

Rice complained of neck pain and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, Forrester added.

At approximately the same time, officers were dispatched to the area of Quincy Street and Cloud Street for the report of a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle, Forrester reported. Officers located a 1996 Chevrolet pickup owned by Mid-Kansas Tool that had the reported license plate. The pickup was parked facing northbound in the 1700 block of Quincy Street with the passenger side tires up on the curb, Forrester explained. Additionally, the pickup had damage consistent with the reported accident, he noted. 

The owner of the pickup was contacted and told police that the pickup should be parked at Mid-Kansas Tool, 1720 South Ninth Street, and that no one had permission to use it, Forrester reported. The pickup was valued at $2,500, he added.

According to Forrester, a witness reported seeing the pickup traveling westbound on Cloud Street and driving through several yards. Inside the pickup, officers found the strong odor of alcohol and visible liquid spilled on the floor and seat of the vehicle, he explained. 

Video from the area showed a subject exiting the pickup who matched the description of Blaine Godinez, 30, of Salina, who was found walking westbound on Russell Avenue, approximately a block from the parked pickup, Forrester noted.

Godinez was arrested on the following requested charges, according to Forrester.

The Kansas Geological Survey (KGS) reported that a magnitude 2 quake struck eastern Marion County at 5:07 a.m. Monday. The quake was centered approximately seven miles east-northeast of Lincolnville, just east of Clover Road between 290th Street and 300 Street, KGS noted.

Additionally, a 2.5 magnitude quake was reported at 6:45 p.m. Monday in Jewell County. According to KGS, the quake was centered slightly more than two miles west of Jewell, just south of H Road.

Kansas Wesleyan University is proud to announce the winners of the inaugural Bill McMosley Scholarship Competition, a fine arts-based event. Trenyce Nolan, Wichita, and Billy Holladay, Kansas City, Kan., were the event winners.

“We’re excited for Trenyce and Billy to join the KWU family,” said Ken Oliver, Vice President of Advancement, Admissions and Marketing. “They made an excellent impression, both in competition and in the interview process, and are worthy recipients of this great honor.”

Nolan intends to study Music Theatre. She is graduating a year early from Kansas Connections Academy, where she ranks first in her class. Holladay, who competed in Debate at the McMosley competition, will major in history at KWU. He will graduate from Piper-Junior Senior High School.

The Bill McMosley Scholarship Competition honors the long-time KWU Director of Bands, a stint that ran from 1999–2013, and was heavily involved in other musical events and educational efforts in the region. He passed away in June 2020.

TOPEKA – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is accepting entries for the 2021 Missing Children’s Day poster contest, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced.

All Kansas fifth grade students, from public, private, or home schools, are invited to create and submit artwork that represents the contest theme “Bringing Our Missing Children Home.” The artwork must be original, handcrafted, 8 ½ x 14 inches in size, and contain the words “Bringing Our Missing Children Home.”

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed May 25 as National Missing Children’s Day. The annual national poster contest sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention creates an opportunity for schools, law enforcement and child advocates to discuss the issue of missing and/or exploited children with youth, parents and guardians and to promote child safety.

“This contest creates awareness for the children who are missing, while also providing parents and teachers an opportunity to talk to kids about what to do if they’re approached by strangers,” Schmidt said.

KBI Director Kirk Thompson added, “While this contest is for fifth graders, we know how important it is for parents to take time to discuss appropriate safety measures with each of their children.”

The winner’s poster will also represent Kansas in the national contest. The national poster contest winner, along with his or her parents and teacher, will be eligible for a trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in the National Missing Children’s Day ceremony in May 2021.

Vacating roads, coronavirus funding allocations, and a review of the COVID-19 situation in Saline County concerning the mask mandate are among the items on the Saline County Commission agenda for Tuesday.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday via Zoom and the county's YouTube channel. This decision to revise the meeting format was made to align with the mass gathering limitations imposed by the Saline County Commission and Saline County Health Officer.

A committee made up of two county staff members, to county commissioners, and a citizen at large reviewed the applications and made the following recommendations for the awarding of the funds. Commissioners must approve the recommendations before the funds can be disbursed.

Commissioners also are scheduled to consider vacating portions of the following three roads.

●A portion of South Niles Road south of Tinkler Road

●A portion of Frontage Road in the Commerford Tract

●A portion of West Schilling Road west of South Halstead Road

Sadly, we have been notified of 11 additional deaths due to COVID-19 since our last update on December 30. Sixty-nine members of our community have lost their lives to this virus.&nbsp;Salina Regional Health Center notified us that they currently have 33 hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

There have been 193 new positive COVID-19 cases reported in Saline County since December 30. The total number of positive cases for Saline County has risen to 4,480.

The Health Department staff are now actively monitoring 1,756 cases. At least 2,655 have recovered. Our dashboard has been updated with the latest information:

Vortex Global's Peterson to retire

Two people were injured in a two-vehicle accident Saturday afternoon near the State Street exit on Interstate 135 (I-135).

According to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan, a white 2014 Buick Enclave driven by Dorene Healy, 65, of Lincoln, had exited northbound I-135, and was pulling out after stopping at the stop sign when it was struck in the rear driver's side by an eastbound red 2008 Saturn driven by Samantha Cook, 18, of Salina. The accident occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Cook was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center (SRHC) for an injury to her wrist and hand, Soldan said. Additionally, a passenger in her vehicle, Alex Cavaral, 28, of Salina, also was transported by EMS to SRHC. His injuries were not reported. A third passenger in the Saturn was not injured, Soldan said. Healy and a passenger in her vehicle were not injured, he added.

Soldan said that Healy was cited for failure to yield.

ASSARIA -- A Manhattan woman was injured when she was struck by a vehicle on Old Highway 81 near Assaria early Friday morning.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that emergency personnel were sent to South Old Highway 81 approximately a half-mile north of Assaria Road at 2:42 a.m. Friday for the report of a pedestrian who walked out into the highway being struck by a northbound vehicle. 

Soldan said the driver, Joseph Fraizer, 32, of Salina, who was in a 2003 Honda Odyssey, swerved in an attempted to avoid hitting Cheyenne Hamilton, 22, of Manhattan, but ended up striking her. Hamilton was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center with serious injuries to her legs, he said.

As for how Hamilton ended up on the highway, Soldan said that Hamilton had an argument with a male friend. He stopped the vehicle they were in, she got out, and he left, Soldan explained. Soldan said he believed alcohol played a role in Hamilton's behavior.

Manhattan woman struck on Old Highway 81 near Assaria

Eagle Communications announced this week that Ben Waters has been named market manager for its Salina market, effective Jan. 1.

Waters, who has been with Eagle since 2018, most recently served as market manager in Hutchinson.

"We are thrilled to hand the reins to Ben in Salina. He is the right choice to grow our operations there," Eagle CEO Kurt David said. "Ben has already been engaged with the community and with clients and his knowledge of Eagle's extensive product suite will be a great benefit to help grow the Salina business community.

Drouhard retired effective Dec. 31 after 31 years with Eagle Communications.

Because the bill funding the second round of Economic Impact Payments (EIPs) has now been signed into law. The money — right now, $600 per person who qualifies — is being&nbsp;sent out over the next few weeks. And, like last time, the money is meant for the PERSON, not the place they might live.

In <a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/2020/05/did-nursing-home-or-assisted-living-facility-take-your-stimulus-check">the first round</a>, which I’ll call EIP 1.0, we know that some nursing facilities tried to take the stimulus payments intended for their residents…particularly those on Medicaid. Which wasn’t, shall we say, legal, and kept some attorneys general busy recovering those funds for people.

Now, with EIP 2.0, we would hope those facilities have learned their lesson. But, just in case, let’s be clear: If you qualify for a payment, it’s yours to keep. If a loved one qualifies and lives in a nursing home or assisted living facility, it’s theirs to keep. The facility may not put their hands on it, or require somebody to sign it over to them. Even if that somebody is on Medicaid.

It would be worth a quick chat with management of the facility in question, just to remind them that the rules are the same this time through. And if you hear about a nursing home or assisted living facility being grabby about Economic Impact Payments, tell your <a href="https://www.consumerresources.org/file-a-complaint/">state attorney general</a> right away. And then tell the FTC at <a href="http://www.reportfraud.ftc.gov/">www.ReportFraud.ftc.gov</a>.

The Saline County Tag Office will begin taking appointments later this week.

In an effort to reduce long lines at the tag office located at the City/County Building and continue all efforts to keep citizens safe from exposure to COVID-19, a new system called “No Wait Inside” has been implemented and appointments will begin being taken on Wednesday.&nbsp;

"The system allows you to log on to our web site from either your home computer or smart phone, select an available date and time to set up an appointment to conduct your necessary business with the tag office," Saline County Treasurer Jim DuBois said in a news release this morning.&nbsp;

ABILENE -- Cooper Holloway, of Abilene, continues to help comfort children at medical facilities with his Cooper’s Care Cases.

Cooper recently donated another 250 “cases” (draw-string bags) to Memorial Hospital in Abilene. They will be given to children who are patients in the Emergency Department, Laboratory, Radiology, Inpatient Unit, and Heartland Health Care Clinic.

Why is Cooper so dedicated to making the bags? In May of 2013, he was diagnosed with a Common Variable Immune Disease which makes it hard for his body to fight off illness. Cooper, however, is strong and draws part of his strength from helping and encouraging other children.

Once Cooper was diagnosed at approximately age 4, he had to start weekly plasma transfusions with T and B cells, according to information from Memorial Health Systems (MHS). Because of the nature of his disease, Cooper had to take a bag of his own toys and books with him to the hospital in Kansas City. One day while at the hospital, Cooper told his mother, Dawn, that he wished all children in the hospital had their own bag of things.

Thus, the idea for Cooper's Care Cases began.

Initially, he distributed the hand-made cloth drawstring bags to children in the Kansas City hospital in which he spent so much time. In 2015, he began making and donating bags to Abilene's Memorial Hospital to help local children as well.

Cooper again had help from family and friends creating and filling the bags. The bags contain a notebook for writing and coloring, a storybook, small notepads, crayons, a pen, pencils, stickers, a note from Cooper that reads “stay strong like Cooper,” and a small toy and book donated by McDonald’s of Abilene.
