We just received word that the rolling blackouts will now last 120 minutes.&nbsp;

Due to the record-breaking cold throughout the country, our power supplier and the power markets are facing a crisis.

We have been asked, along with all other utilities, to reduce our energy usage immediately. Please lower the temperature of your thermostat and reduce power usage for the next day or so.

It is possible that power may be shut off to parts of our state and country in the foreseeable future. We wanted to give you a heads up so you are prepared. Make sure you have batteries, blankets, food, water, etc.

We will keep you updated as this progresses.

Saline County has closed part of Cunningham Road for drainage work.

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department announced this morning that it has closed Cunningham Road between County Club Road and Crawford to through traffic for replacement of a cross-road drainage structure. Weather permitting the roadway will be opened by April 2, 2021.

Motorists are advised to allow a few extra minutes of travel time to reach their destinations. Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.

MANHATTAN—The Kansas State University&nbsp;<a href="https://engg.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">Carl R. Ice College of Engineering</a>&nbsp;will honor 10 alumni for professional career accomplishment during the first 20 years following their graduation.

The honorees will be recognized at ceremonies March 5. Recipients of the college's Professional Progress Award were nominated by their respective department heads and confirmed by Matt O'Keefe, dean of engineering. The following are the 2021 Professional Progress Award honorees:

Mark Troutfetter,&nbsp;Austin, Texas,&nbsp;is a 2006 graduate of Kansas State University in computer engineering. He began his career in Austin at National Instruments, a global leader in automated test and measurement systems. Starting out in applications engineering, he moved into research and development managing various hardware and software products. He was active in recruiting at K-State for National Instruments during his tenure with the company. In 2013 he left to help found Pristine, a company focused on building software for Smart Glasses. Pristine was acquired by Upskill in Washington, D.C., in 2017, where Troutfetter served as vice president of engineering focused on bringing augmented reality to the industrial workforce. In 2020 he moved to Welltok, a total well-being-focused consumer activation company, where he currently serves as senior vice president of product development and oversees all software engineering efforts, including architecture, prioritization, execution, quality assurance, release management and general support. He is a graduate of Southeast of Saline High School. Liz Heier,&nbsp;Kansas City, is a 2000 graduate of Kansas State University in information systems. She is currently director of global data privacy at Garmin International in&nbsp;Olathe. In her 13 years at Garmin, she has held a variety of positions, including software engineer, technical lead and software engineering manager. In 2017 she created Garmin's data protection and privacy compliance program spanning the company's five product segments and 100-plus locations worldwide. Heier's responsibilities include providing analysis and guidance on privacy impacts and compliance requirements for new features, apps and products; establishing privacy policies, processes and standards; conducting training and awareness programs; and addressing inquiries and complaints. In 2020 she also served as director of technology and development, leading a team of nearly 100 engineers in both internet and enterprise applications, services, platforms and technologies. John Anderson,&nbsp;Maize,&nbsp;is a 2001 graduate of Kansas State University in biological and agricultural engineering. He is currently an engineering director at AGCO Corporation's&nbsp;Hesston&nbsp;location. AGCO Corporation is a global manufacturer of agricultural equipment headquartered in Duluth, Georgia. Anderson began his career with AGCO as a design engineer with a focus on engine installations in combines. He has since held various roles of increasing responsibility in design and project management, as well as global responsibilities for engine installations across all AGCO products. In his current role he leads the AGCO Hesston engineering site and has been heavily involved in development of the Fendt IDEAL Combine. Anderson is a graduate of Hugoton High School,&nbsp;Hugoton. Michelle Jones Schlie,&nbsp;Overland Park, is a 2000 graduate of Kansas State University in industrial engineering. She also has a master's degree in engineering management from the University of Kansas. As northcentral supply chain region vice president for Frito-Lay, she is responsible for the&nbsp;Topeka,&nbsp;Kansas; Beloit, Wisconsin; and Frankfort, Indiana, plants as well as distribution facilities across 12 states. Thankfully, Evergy wasn't required to implement temporary power outages overnight. This morning we remain in a critical period and the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) remains at Energy Emergency Alert Level 2 as extended cold temperatures continue to strain the regional power grid.

Current conditions make additional controlled, temporary emergency electricity reductions a strong possibility from around midnight through 11 am Wednesday morning. As a result, Evergy remains on standby in the event that the SPP calls for additional emergency power outages.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – At the request of the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), Evergy is asking customers to conserve electricity use as much as possible through Wednesday. 

The SPP, which coordinates the 17-state regional power supply, advises that the region’s coldest weather in decades is creating high demand for electricity. At the same time, the extreme weather is driving high demand for natural gas used to heat homes and businesses, straining the gas supply available to generate electricity, and icy conditions have made availability of wind generation uncertain. The SPP has advised that the unprecedented low temperatures across a widespread region creates the potential for electricity shortages and has asked all utilities in the region to encourage customers to reduce electricity usage in order to maintain electricity supply overall and avoid potential power outages.

“Our Evergy employees are working around the clock to manage our power plants and power lines. Evergy began preparing for the extreme weather early last week by planning for additional fuel needs and increasing 24/7 staffing levels. The proactive preparations have the company’s system handling the current demand and well positioned to maintain reliable operations for its contribution to the region’s power needs. Evergy has reduced electricity use at its facilities, implemented cold-weather procedures, and adapted operations at its power plants to keep equipment working and fuel available to generate electricity for customers.

Evergy is a member of the Southwest Power Pool, which coordinates the regional transmission grid and wholesale energy markets for the central United States, including Kansas and Missouri. The SPP monitors power flow through its footprint and coordinates regional response in emergency situations.

This morning we remain in a critical period and the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) remains at Energy Emergency Alert Level 2 as extended cold temperatures continue to strain the regional power grid. Current conditions make additional controlled, temporary emergency electricity reductions a strong possibility from around midnight through 11 am Wednesday morning. FHSU announces fall 2020 graduates

So, you want to be in animal agriculture? You get to be your own boss, but the pay is lousy. Still the life is generally good. Weeks like this past one makes us reconsider our choices in vocation and, at times, our ability to make sane, rational decisions. Yes, the past two weeks have brought us record- or near-record-low temperatures and snowfall. Conditions have been miserable to dangerous, but we knew what we signed up for to live this life. While we may not always like our jobs, we still love what we do. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves of that and show others how much we care. To say it has been a grind would be an understatement. I do not know about you, but I found it hard to go out every morning, and each day felt kind of the same with no end in sight. It was tough and hard. I would dare say none of us enjoyed the past two weeks, but you know what? Not one of us called in sick. We did not take any days off because of the inclement weather, and none of us stayed inside where it was warm and safe. Most of the rest of the world would ask one question — why? Because that is what we do, that is who we are, and our livestock take priority over our own comfort, sometimes even our personal safety. I know each and every one of us have felt that the compulsion to not only do our jobs but go above and beyond what was needed to ensure the well-being of the animals entrusted to our care. We went out in the dark and cold, in the face of the howling wind and biting air to make sure our livestock had the best of care. We used extra resources, pushed machinery to the brink and ran ourselves ragged because of that nagging, gnawing need at our core to take care of the animals dependent on us. While all of this was happening, our customers probably did not think twice about our work. Shame on us, we need to make sure our consumers know how much we care for the animals we raise. They need to know about the sacrifices and the hardships farmers and ranchers go through in extreme weather to ensure the health and safety of livestock. We just do not do a better job telling our story. I know we are busy trying to get things done, and we do not take the extra step of sharing all we do. I get it, and I am guilty of not sharing enough, too. Telling our story is especially important when times are toughest. No one else is going to. In fact, there’s plenty of groups eager to misrepresent the hard work we do caring for our animals because we’re not telling our story. We are the best kept secret in animal care, and that’s a shame. While we may not like making the extra effort to talk about our work, I believe it is worth showing everyone the love and care we have for our profession.

INSIGHT: Sharing Our Secrets

Today is Wednesday, Feb. 17, the 48th day of 2021. There are 317 days left in the year. 

On Feb. 17, 1815, the United States and Britain exchanged the instruments of ratification for the Treaty of Ghent, ending the War of 1812. 

In 1801, the U.S. House of Representatives broke an electoral tie between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr, electing Jefferson president; Burr became vice president. 

In 1863, the International Red Cross was founded in Geneva. 

In 1864, during the Civil War, the Union ship USS Housatonic was rammed and sunk in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, by the Confederate hand-cranked submarine HL Hunley in the first naval attack of its kind; the Hunley also sank.

Travis Hittson, a former Navy crewman, was executed in Georgia for killing a fellow sailor, Conway Utterbeck.

One year ago: More than 300 American cruise ship passengers, including 14 who tested positive for coronavirus, were quarantined at military bases in California and Texas after arriving from Japan on charter flights. A push by Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam to ban the sale of assault weapons failed after some of his fellow Democrats in the state Senate balked at the proposal. Healthy soil is the vital foundation for success in the home garden. Help plant roots drink, eat, and breath the good life in your garden," Graves told Salina Post.

DICKINSON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 2:30p.m. Tuesday in Dickinson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Chevy Malibu driven by Jeremy Lee Taylor, 37, Abilene, was westbound on Interstate 70 six miles east of Abilene.

The car entered the north ditch, struck the guardrail for the off ramp and&nbsp; overturned into a culvert.

EMS transported&nbsp;Taylor to Salina Regional Health Center. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

BEVERLY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Monday in Lincoln County.

Just after 5:30 p.m. the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department responded to a 911 call at a home in Beverly where a teen had been shot, according to Melissa Underwood, spokesperson for the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

First responders found a 15-year-old girl with a gunshot wound.&nbsp; EMS transported her to Salina Regional Health Center where she was pronounced dead, according to the KBI.&nbsp; &nbsp;Authorities released no additional details on Tuesday.&nbsp; Beverly is located approximately 30 miles northwest of Salina.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Republic. This advisory is not related to COVID-19.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

●If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.

●Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.

●Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic ice maker.

●Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.

●Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

The advisory took effect on Tuesday and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE issued the advisory because of a&nbsp;waterline break and power outage resulting in a&nbsp;loss of pressure in the system. A loss of pressure may lead to inadequate chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or KDHE announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

MCPHERSON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 10a.m. Tuesday in McPherson County.The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Chevy Suburban driven by Megan R.&nbsp;Hackney-Demirci, 42, Haysville, was northbound on Interstate 135 just north of Comanche Road.The SUV ran over a tarp that came loose off the trailer of 2020 Freightliner semi and flew off.&nbsp;&nbsp;Hackney-Demirci complained of pain, according to the KHP. The agency did not report where she was taken for treatment.&nbsp; The semi driver Charanjit&nbsp;Singhit, Manitoba, was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.
