MANHATTAN — April is National Heartworm Awareness Month.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/academics/clinical-sciences/faculty-staff/faculty/nelson/" target="_blank">Susan Nelson</a>, clinical professor at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksvhc.org/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Veterinary Health Center</a>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Veterinary Medicine</a>,&nbsp;is reminding pets owners that the risk of heartworm transmission to pets increases as the weather warms up.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nelson said the American Heartworm Society reminds all pet owners to Think 12: Administer heartworm preventives 12 months a year and test pets for heartworm every 12 months. &nbsp;

Nelson shares the following facts to help pet owners understand more about heartworm disease and how to keep their pets safe. &nbsp;

1. Heartworm disease is a potentially deadly disease for pets and is spread by mosquitoes. &nbsp;

Heartworm disease is spread to pets by the bite of a mosquito that is carrying the microscopic infective larval stage, called L3. It takes around six months for the L3 to develop into adult heartworms. Adult heartworms live in the heart and main pulmonary arteries and they can grow up to 12 inches in length.&nbsp;

2. Dogs are the most common host for heartworm disease. &nbsp;

Ferrets and wild animals such as wolves, coyotes, foxes and sea lions also can be infected. There are rare cases of human infection as well.&nbsp;

Heartworm disease in dogs often can cause long-term damage to the heart, lungs and arteries and can affect their health and quality of life well after the parasites are gone. Dogs can harbor several hundred worms.&nbsp;

Signs of heartworm disease in dogs range from none in the early stages to coughing; exercise intolerance; reluctance to exercise; decreased appetite; weight loss; swollen belly; collapse; pale gums; dark, bloody or coffee-colored urine; and death.&nbsp;

3. Cats also can be infected with heartworm disease. &nbsp;

Cats are not a preferred host for heartworms and most worms are not able to mature into the adults. Cats with adult heartworms usually only have one to three worms, but even a few worms can cause life-threatening disease in cats because of their small heart size.&nbsp;

The immature larval stages also can cause damage to the lungs in cats in a condition known as Heartworm Associated Respiratory Disease, or HARD. Cats with HARD often require treatment of their symptoms, even if they don’t have adult heartworms.&nbsp;

Signs of heartworm disease in cats include coughing, asthmalike attacks, vomiting, decreased appetite, weight loss, difficulty walking, fainting, seizures, swollen belly from fluid accumulation, sudden collapse and sudden death.&nbsp;

4. Heartworm disease can be found across the United States.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The American Heartworm Society reports that more than 1 million dogs currently have heartworm disease. It has been diagnosed in all 50 states, with a higher prevalence in the more southern states along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.&nbsp;

There are many variables that contribute to the prevalence of heartworm in your area from year to year, including climate variations, presence of wildlife carriers, mosquito species and the warmer microhabitats around buildings in urban settings. Even indoor pets are at risk because mosquitoes can be found indoors.&nbsp;

5. Preventives and treatments are available.&nbsp;

There are many preventives to help keep your dog or cat from contracting heartworm disease, and puppies and kittens should be started on heartworm preventive no later than eight weeks of age. There are pills and topical preventives for both cats and dogs as well as injectable preventives that last anywhere from six to 12 months for dogs. Many of these preventives deworm for several common intestinal parasites as well.&nbsp;

Dogs older than seven months of age can be tested for heartworm disease. They should be retested yearly for early detection of any infection that could occur if a dog spits out its pill, vomits soon after taking its pill or rubs off its topical preventive soon after application or if you give the pill late. Additionally, the available preventives are very good, but nothing is 100 percent.&nbsp;

There are treatments available should your dog contract heartworm disease, and they are more often than not successful at clearing the infection. There can be serious post-treatment complications and treatment can be very costly, so prevention is your best bet.&nbsp;

Detecting a heartworm infection in cats is not as straightforward as it is in dogs and often involves many additional tests to try to prove an infection. Unfortunately, there is also no approved drug therapy for heartworm infection in cats, and the drug used to treat infections in dogs is not safe for cats. It is very important to ensure cats are on a monthly preventive to try to keep them from becoming infected in the first place.&nbsp;

K-State veterinarian shares facts to prevent heartworm disease in pets

The Central Kansas District Extension Master Gardeners are ready for warmer temperatures and are jumping into spring planting season by hosting their Plant and Garden Garage Sale fundraiser.

The event is scheduled for 8 a.m.-noon Saturday (May 1) in Kenwood Hall, 900 Greeley Avenue. It will feature a Master Gardener sale of plants, garden, and garage finds.  Admission to the sale is free and garden item donations are welcome. 

Please note that COVID-19 precautions will be in place. Social distancing and face masks/coverings will be required for participants.

"We'll have a variety of donated garden related items along with a variety of plants from area growers and suppliers that are well suited for our area," Jason Graves, horticulture extension agent for the Central Kansas District, said of the sale. 

The Dyck Arboretum of Hesston will be at the sale and will be offering native plants, grasses, and adaptable perennials to boost spring plans and planting for pollinators, butterflies and much more. 

Faye’s Playground will be at the sale offering unique varieties of iris and daylilies just in time for spring planting. 

Paradise Ponds of Ellsworth will have a selection of water/aquatic plants available for purchase and a few pre-selected varieties of annual flowers from Sheila’s Garden Market in Galva will also be available at the Master Gardener booth.

Additionally, Friends of the Animal Shelter will have a bake sale table at the event.

Proceeds from the Master Gardener Plant and Garden Garage Sale will be used to support the Demonstration Garden and other Master Gardener outreach activities and projects such as the Garden Tour planned for 2022.

SMITH COUNTY —A pair of earthquakes shook north central Kansas on Friday afternoon and on Saturday morning.

Just after 4p.m. Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported a quake that measured a magnitude 2.9 was centered seven miles north of Downs. 

A preliminary report from the Kansas Geological Survey indicated the quake measured 3.5 magnitude and said it was centered just east of the Smith County line in Jewell County.

KSGS also reported a 2.6 magnitude quake at 8:16 a.m. on Saturday in Smith County.&nbsp; There are no reports of damage.&nbsp;The threshold for damage usually starts at a magnitude 4.0.

The City of Salina has announced that crack sealing work will continue on city streets next week.

Monday through Friday, APAC Shears of Salina will seal cracks on the following City of Salina streets, weather permitting.

Residents will be asked to remove their cars from streets to facilitate the work, which will take place generally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Access to properties within work zones will be maintained at all times. “Road Work Ahead” signs will be placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane closures are to be expected. Motorists are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work zones for the safety of the crews performing the work.

The annual crack and joint sealing program is an important and cost-effective preventive maintenance component of the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. Crack sealing the pavement helps prevent water from penetrating into the pavement structure or sub-base material and aids in reducing a number of pavement problems which include: crack spreading; formation of voids under pavement; swelling and shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action; alligator cracking; potholing; and complete failure. Because of its importance and cost-effectiveness, the Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no less often than every seven years. Approximately 31 centerline miles of streets will be sealed in 2021.

The $460,000 project is a major component of the City of Salina’s $4.7 million 2021 maintenance capital improvement program.

Ultimately, it’s speech, responding to speech. Someone says something and other people respond by saying, “That was terrible. They should be fired.” Or, “That was terrible. We should stop buying their music or watching their show or whatever it is.”

People conflate holding people accountable with cancel culture, but I do think … like many terms, it’s the term that’s come to encompass a lot of things.

DOES CANCEL CULTURE VIOLATE THE FIRST AMENDMENT?

Why people always bring up the First Amendment when they’re talking about cancel culture is that anything that makes people hesitant to share their views is called the chilling effect, which cuts against free expression and the value of freely expressing yourself.

It’s not going to violate the First Amendment because that only applies to the government chilling your speech. The First Amendment doesn’t apply to actions taken by private companies or private individuals. But, you know, it’s still worth discussing in a space like this, because even if it’s not a First Amendment issue, it is something that impacts what the First Amendment is meant to do, which is free expression.

If there’s value in cancel culture, it might be in causing institutions to change their policies and things like that. I don’t know if you can change a person by canceling them, except to make them angry at cancel culture.

What are you trying to accomplish with your speech? What are you trying to accomplish by canceling someone? You always hear a story about a professor who has made questionable remarks in the classroom. If you are calling for them to be fired, are you trying to take a stand against institutional racism in the academic system? Or are you just trying to ruin someone’s life?

I think that’s the difference between employing this for the purpose of a movement versus just canceling someone. Are you furthering a cause or is this sort of personal?

I think that it can do some good things if it’s used in the right way, if it’s used as more of a boycott for a cause than just to ruin someone’s life. But the truth is, if people feel afraid to express their views because of cancel culture, if they just stop their ideas before they’ve even taken form, that’s a chilling effect. That’s bad. It’s bad for free speech. On the other hand, cancel culture is free speech.

FIRST 5: Cancel culture can chill free speech; also is free speech

Today is Saturday, April 24, the 114th day of 2021. There are 251 days left in the year. 

On April 24, 1980, the United States launched an unsuccessful attempt to free the American hostages in Iran, a mission that resulted in the deaths of eight U.S. servicemen. 

In 1800, Congress approved a bill establishing the Library of Congress. 

In 1877, federal troops were ordered out of New Orleans, ending the North's post-Civil War rule in the South.

In 1915, in what's considered the start of the Armenian genocide, the Ottoman Empire began rounding up Armenian political and cultural leaders in Constantinople. 

In 1960, rioting erupted in Biloxi, Miss., after Black protesters staging a "wade-in" at a whites-only beach were attacked by a crowd of hostile whites.

In 1962, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology achieved the first satellite relay of a television signal, between Camp Parks, California, and Westford, Massachusetts.

In 1967, Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov was killed when his Soyuz 1 spacecraft smashed into the Earth after his parachutes failed to deploy properly during re-entry; he was the first human spaceflight fatality.

Five years ago: President Barack Obama, visiting Hannover, Germany, defended international trade deals in the face of domestic and foreign opposition, saying it was "indisputable" that they strengthened the economy and made Americans businesses more competitive. Billy Paul, 80, a jazz and soul singer best known for the No. 1 hit ballad and "Philadelphia Soul" classic "Me and Mrs. Jones," died in Blackwood, New Jersey.

One year ago: The recorded U.S. death toll from the coronavirus passed the 50,000 mark. Republican governors in Georgia, Oklahoma and Alaska allowed some businesses to reopen with restrictions, although health experts warned that it was too soon to ease lockdown orders. President Donald Trump signed a $484 billion measure to aid employers and hospitals under stress from the pandemic. The Food and Drug Administration issued an alert about the dangers of using a malaria drug that Trump had repeatedly promoted for coronavirus patients. The parent company of Lysol and another disinfectant warned that its products should not be used as an internal treatment for the coronavirus, a day after Trump wondered aloud about that prospect during a White House briefing. Harold Reid, who sang bass for the Grammy-winning country group the Statler Brothers, died in Virginia at the age of 80.

JEWELL COUNTY - A 3.5 magnitude earthquake rattled part of western Jewell County this afternoon.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, the quake struck at 4:15 p.m. Friday and was centered a couple of miles east of the Jewell County-Smith County line north of I Road.

It is with great sadness that we share that one additional member of our community has lost their battle to COVID-19. This marks the first reported death due to COVID-19 reported since March 22. Salina Regional Health Center has notified us that they currently have four patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

There have been 15 new positive COVID-19 cases reported in Saline County since our last update on April 21, which brings the total number of positive cases for Saline County to 6,169.

The Health Department staff are now&nbsp;actively monitoring 64 cases.&nbsp;At least 5,996 people have recovered,&nbsp;but sadly&nbsp;109 members of our community have lost their lives to this deadly virus. Our dashboard has been updated with the latest information:

A Gypsum man was cited after a four-vehicle accident late Thursday afternoon in Salina.

Alden Hemphill, 33, of Gypsum was eastbound in the 1000 block E. Iron Avenue at 5:50 p.m. in a 2009 Subaru Legacy. According to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester, Hemphill was not paying attention and was on his cellphone when he rear-ended a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Keegan Emery, 22, of Salina.

The impact forced the Grand Am into a 2013 Volkswagen Beetle driven by Mark Martin, 70, of Salina, forcing the Beetle into a 2006 Chrysler Pacifica driven by Shawnna Wylie, 51, of Salina.

No one was injured in the pileup, Forrester noted.

The Legacy had disabling front-end damage and was towed from the scene. The Grand Am had disabling front-end and rear-end damage and was towed from the scene. The Beetle had rear-end damage and was removed by the driver. No damage was reported to the Pacifica.

Hemphill was cited for following too closely and no proof of liability insurance, according to Forrester.

Scattered showers and storms are expected to skirt the southern part of our area this afternoon and evening.

The main storm area is expected to be southeast Kansas. A few storms south and east of the Kansas Turnpike may be marginally severe with quarter size hail and winds gusting to 60 mph.

NWS: Heavier storms expected to stay to our southeast

A lot of information has been going around about the Proposed Kansas Nebraska National Heritage Area Partnership. Let us look at the Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area (FFNHA) that is already in Kansas and in Western Missouri.

National Heritage Areas push Economic Development and Tourism. So, if an area has Economic Development, that should allow for an increase in population as more jobs are available. How has the population in theses counties benefitted by being a National Heritage Area? What has the population done in the 40 counties of the FFNHA that was established in 2006 and the management plan was approved in 2009? Using data from Wikipedia, I pulled the populations for each county involved. The 2010 &amp; 2018 populations are used for comparison.

Of the 40 counties in FFNHA, only 13 counties saw an increase in population. The areas of population growth were as expected around Fort Riley and Manhattan, Kansas, and the Kansas City Metro Area. You can generally expect growth in population around a military post as it grows with consolidation of troops. The Bio-Security Lab in Manhattan was expected to bring more jobs to the area but these jobs in no way reflect any influence by the National Heritage Area. Population growth in the counties surrounding Kansas City is a given at any time and I doubt the NHA had anything to do with increased jobs in the Metro Area.

One would think that a National Heritage Area would promote growth with the promise of Economic Development, however, of the 40 counties in the FFNHA, 27 counties saw a DECREASE in population! Where are the jobs? Where is the Economic Development?

When you include the Fort Riley and Manhattan area growth, the numbers still look dismal. Less than 28% of the counties saw an actual increase in population. Just a little over 72% saw a decrease in population.

 </figure>What benefit has this NHA realized for the People of Kansas and Missouri? Where did the money go that the FFNHA received for promoting Economic Development and Tourism? The FFNHA is supposed to have 15 years to become self-sufficient, have they? OR is the FFNHA still getting Taxpayer dollars to fund a non-profit organization that has done little or nothing for the counties?IF the Proposed Kansas Nebraska National Heritage Area Partnership becomes an NHA, will it truly help Economic Development and Tourism for those 22 Kansas Counties and 27 Counties in Nebraska? Or will it become like the Freedom’s Frontier NHA?Another question that lays heavy on many farmers and ranchers as of late, is the 30x30 Executive Order that does not say what land has been selected for the permanent control by the Federal Government. In some of the wording of the 30x30 included in the CAP (Center for American Progress) report, lands included to be permanently protected include National Parks, Wilderness Areas, Permanent Conservation Easements, State Parks, National Wildlife Refuges, National Monuments or OTHER PROTECTED AREAS. COULD National Heritage Areas be considered “PROTECTED AREAS”? Could CRP land be considered “PROTECTED AREAS”?Foundations for National Heritage Areas are rarely forthcoming with information when people ask hard questions. You cannot use the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to obtain information because they are not a government entity. Yet the NHA’s can regulate these areas because they are areas to set aside for “Heritage” purposes.Think long and hard about this, folks. The map tells a story, as do the numbers on population growth.
