A motorcyclist was taken to Salina Regional Health Center (SRHC) Sunday night after a two-vehicle accident in west Salina.

A 1988 GMC Sierra pickup driven by Robert Berg, 56, of Salina, had stopped at the light at the intersection of W. Cloud Street and S. Broadway Boulevard and then continued eastbound when the light turned green, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. 

Multiple witnesses told police that a 2007 Triumph motorcycle driven by Brice Grizzle, 25, of Salina, was southbound on S. Broadway Boulevard at a high rate of speed and was unable to stop at the red light. The motorcycle struck the left rear of the pickup.

Grizzle was transported by EMS to SRHC with severe injuries, Forrester reported.

The motorcycle sustained major damage and was removed by a wrecker. The pickup sustained left rear damage and was removed by Berg.

The accident, which occurred at approximately 9:50 p.m. Sunday, is still under investigation, Forrester noted.

More than $5,000 worth of property, including four guns, were taken from a residence north of Salina late last week.

Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Jeremiah Hayes said this morning that deputies were sent to a residence in the 600 block of E. Shipton Road at 11:30 a.m. Friday for the report of a burglary. He said the owners were in the process of moving in and had stored some of their belongings in several locked sheds on the property.

Three long guns, a handgun, and other miscellaneous property were stolen, Hayes said. 

Whoever stole the items was able to get into the residence and retrieve keys to enter the sheds, he said. The burglary is believed to have occurred between 5 p.m. Thursday and 8:15 a.m. Friday.

The wind conditions are forecast to be such that a wind advisory has been issued for multiple counties in our area for Monday.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a wind advisory in effect from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday for the following counties in our area.

South winds at 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected. 

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects and knock down a few smaller tree limbs. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle.

Any fires that ignite may spread rapidly and exhibit extreme fire behavior. Use extreme caution if engaging in activities that could lead to fire ignition.

Additionally, the National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a red flag warning in effect from noon to 8 p.m. Monday that includes the following counties in our are

Southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph and minimum relative humidity values between 15 and 20 percent are forecast.

Any fires that develop in areas with dried fuels will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Comfort Heating & Air seeks Good Neighbor Award nominees

President Biden pledged to reduce U.S. greenhouse emissions by 50–52 percent by 2030. Alongside this press coverage are references to China being the greatest producer of greenhouse emissions and that China will need to begin cutting back too. But for every ten Americans, there are 44 Chinese. On a per capita basis, one American consumes over three times more energy than one Chinese citizen. And they are far more energy conscious than we are.

China has pulled off the greatest reduction in poverty in history and raised its population to developed country level in the last four decades—an economic miracle. This of necessity has increased the energy requirement of the general population. But for over two decades, China has been constraining its emissions as much as possible. Their conservation efforts have been long underway.&nbsp;

Their economic miracle is based on two revolutions: the adoption of a market economy where folks reap the benefits of their labor, and a massive expansion of education that has now moved China to the forefront of science research, patents, and innovations.

The majority rural population of the pre-1980s often lived in remote villages reminiscent of our 1930 Depression Era Appalachia. Their dramatic overnight shift to modern towns and cities has required heating, air conditioning, and a range of modern conveniences. This requires the building of more power plants, and it has barely kept up with the growing need.

They have a national “Grid.” Our utility companies have a base rate and then charge more when you exceed it. This provides us no motivation to save at low usage. In China, there is no base rate, so you do save if you scrimp at the lowest levels.

China’s high-speed rail system is all electric-powered and has been up-and-running for two decades. The U.S. will never have this.

China now has more cars than the U.S. but began moving to electric cars nearly a decade ago. To build roads and limit traffic, China charges a hefty sum for car registration. But the fee is dramatically less for an electric car. This market-driven incentive has been in place for years now and China is years ahead in shifting to electric cars. Plug-in stations were being built in cities over five years ago. Meanwhile, many run extension cords out their window.

Stay at a hotel and your electronic room key must be placed in a slot just inside the door to turn on the electricity. When you leave, you take the key with you—and all electricity to your room turns off.

Walk the streets in a residential area on a sunny day, and each window will sprout a pole with clothes hanging out to dry. Apartments have many modern conveniences but clothes dryers are an energy hog that would require several dozen more power plants.

China planned long ago to bring 25 more new nuclear power plants online by 2020. These take from 8 to 10 years to build. They haven’t reached their goal, but they have built more than any other country. They have not started further nuclear plants since 2016 because electricity from new solar arrays and wind turbines is now more economical and faster to build.

For the 2008 China Olympics, they closed down old coal plants near Beijing. Western critics snarked that they would start back up again after the Olympics were over. They did not. China has closed old inefficient coal plants and built newer coal plants for now, but with better scrubbing technology. Beijing also had new electric buses running for the 2008 Olympics; they still run today.

Ten years ago, superhighway lights were all powered by solar panels as we drove from Qufu over to Jinan. Today, far more lights are powered by solar compared to those we are only beginning to see in the U.S.&nbsp; China also converted to LED lights faster than the U.S.

China needs every bit of farmland for food production, so cities, towns and villages cannot expand into farmland. But across Henan and Shaanxi Province, unfarmable ridges or rock outcrops are now often the base of wind generators. As you descend in an airliner north of Beijing, you will see a nearly endless "wind farm" that stretches across a range of low dry hills.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Many Chinese cities, including Hangzhou and Shenzhen, have eliminated gas-powered motorcycles. Along with the increase in electric cars, their streets remain crowded but are amazingly quiet. For over two decades, many of these changes have been propelled by public unhappiness with pollution. &nbsp;

If the U.S. manages to cut carbon dioxide emissions in half by 2030, the average American will still produce more per person than the average Chinese. On a per capita basis, Americans will still be the world energy hogs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Today is Monday, April 26, the 116th day of 2021. There are 249 days left in the year. 

On April 26, 1986, an explosion and fire at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine caused radioactive fallout to begin spewing into the atmosphere. (Dozens of people were killed in the immediate aftermath of the disaster while the long-term death toll from radiation poisoning is believed to number in the thousands.) 

In 1607, English colonists went ashore at present-day Cape Henry, Virginia, on an expedition to establish the first permanent English settlement in the Western Hemisphere.

MANHATTAN – Whether it’s an injury, arthritis or infection, our bodies often respond with inflammation, a sign that it’s working to ward off whatever it is that ails us.&nbsp;

But when inflammation becomes chronic, there are natural ways to help manage it through what we eat, according to a Kansas State University nutrition educator.&nbsp;

“A lot of foods have these healthful traits, but some foods do make every list,” said Sandy Procter, state nutrition specialist with K-State Research and Extension. Her top 10 list of foods with anti-inflammatory properties include:

Turmeric, cherries, fresh herbs and spices also are helpful. &nbsp;

So, does this mean those dark chocolate-covered almonds that tend to jump into our shopping carts are good for us? &nbsp;

“I’d say, definitely better than most candies,” Procter said, “and if that little bit of sweet replaces say, a handful of cookies or a piece of cake, then yes. Portion control then becomes the issue.”&nbsp;

Different components in foods have anti-inflammatory effects. They differ from food to food. Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants, whole grains contain fiber and nuts and seeds have fiber and healthy oils.&nbsp;

“Because there are so many different substances that fight inflammation, a varied healthy diet is important,” Procter said. “That way, we introduce many diverse types of inflammation-fighting components into our bodies on a regular basis.”&nbsp;

When asked if these foods are more important as people age and develop conditions such as arthritis, Procter said: “These foods are excellent throughout life – if healthy food choices start early, then those healthy food&nbsp;habits&nbsp;will support good health as a person ages. Many chronic diseases, such as obesity and Type 2 diabetes, are related to chronic inflammation. We know those diseases are affecting more people at younger ages, so starting early is very important.”&nbsp;

But it’s never too late to improve our food choices and to eat healthier, she added. Most anti-inflammatory foods are&nbsp;also the ones that make up the Mediterranean eating pattern, which is mostly made up of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, fish and healthy oils. People who follow that diet from the earliest ages frequently live notably long and healthy lives.&nbsp;

Can people eat enough of these foods to make a difference?

“In a word, yes,” Procter said. “Research has shown it is the foods themselves in the overall diet, not supplements, that really bring about healthful benefits. That’s why we are consistently encouraged to eat more fruits and vegetables, choose whole grain foods and to vary our protein. Plus, if we focus on those anti-inflammatory foods, and avoid or limit the foods shown to cause inflammation, we are taking huge strides for health.”&nbsp;

Foods that cause inflammation and should be avoided or only eaten in moderation, include refined carbohydrates, such as white bread and pastries; French fries and other fried foods; soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages; red meat and processed meats including hot dogs, sausage; and margarine, shortening and lard, according to Harvard Health Publishing at Harvard Medical School (2020). &nbsp;

“It is no coincidence that most of the same foods to avoid for inflammation are generally considered bad for our health,” Procter said.&nbsp;

Procter herself said she’s always eaten fruits and vegetables and is discovering even more healthy foods: “I have learned to love salmon, and nuts, and more beans and whole grains than I ever knew existed. Avocadoes are a more recent preference. And – I have learned to appreciate dark, dark chocolate!”&nbsp;

“Even foods we don’t think are necessarily exciting – like black coffee, apples and mushrooms – are high in anti-inflammatory components,” she added.&nbsp;

46% of adults do not feel comfortable going back to living life like they used to before the pandemic

MANHATTAN – A new report from the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.apa.org/">American Psychological Association</a>&nbsp;indicates that most U.S. adults are surprised that the COVID-19 pandemic has lasted so long.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/stress/2021/one-year-pandemic-stress-conclusion">APA’s report on Stress in America</a>&nbsp;found that 82% of American adults are surprised that the pandemic has lasted more than a year. Nearly 7 in 10 (67%) said that living through the pandemic has been a rollercoaster of emotions.&nbsp;

And Elaine Johannes,&nbsp;the Kansas Health Foundation Distinguished Professor of Community Health at Kansas State University, said&nbsp;46% of adults do not feel comfortable going back to living life like they used to before the pandemic&nbsp;

“It’s amazing that this has gone on more than a year,” Johannes said.&nbsp;“So, it’s not surprising that so many are re-evaluating and wondering what’s next as they re-enter community life.&nbsp;

“It’s hard for us to deal with. Usually we can acclimate to a sudden trauma, grief or loss. With the help of our friends or family, we can move on.&nbsp;But these repeated ups and downs …it’s been tough.”&nbsp;

Johannes noted that many adults likely have gone through stages of shock, denial, sadness and grief and, eventually, acceptance.&nbsp;

“But some of the research around grief and change and how we feel about that has added another perspective, a sixth stage&nbsp;of meaning.” Johannes said. “This is where we feel like we have to have meaning assigned to (the occurrence). I think that’s where our emotions are right now. We’re asking ourselves, ‘what do we do now,’ ‘how do we recover knowing that we can’t go back to the way life was’ or ‘what’s the meaning that we can take away from this pandemic, even though it’s still going on.’”&nbsp;

Johannes said there is evidence that indicates Americans 100 years ago dealt with the same emotions during the Spanish Flu pandemic. During that time, there was also political unrest, doubts about the proper way forward and many deaths. That incident also showed that the ripple effects were felt for many years after.&nbsp;

“As a society, we need to be ready to re-acclimate (after the COVID-19 pandemic), redefine what our recovery is and reflect on what we gained from it,” Johannes said. “We can’t just go back to ‘normal’ because we will never be the same again.”&nbsp;

Work that has been done to address disaster-related psychological trauma has led to strategies that aid in recovery. Those include adapting to a different normal; feeling a sense of some control over our emotions; gaining perspective and assigning meaning to the losses; and feeling mastery from the experience.&nbsp;

Johannes punctuated her point by recalling a saying from President Harry S. Truman: ‘The reward of suffering is experience.’&nbsp;

“That, to me, kind of gives an understanding that the suffering and loss is real, and the sadness is authentic,” she said. “But, what can we gain from that? I think we can say that we are wiser and we have this experience to guide us in the future.”&nbsp;

Johannes added that the APA report highlighted an important point that Americans shared the experience as “a true community.”&nbsp;

“No matter where we were, Americans realized this was a tough, tough thing to go through,” she said. “We felt this roller coaster, up and down, not being sure what was next…But, as a group, we were still a community.”&nbsp;

Health expert discusses mental health impacts of pandemic

Commissioners also are scheduled to consider the following appointments to the Library Board.

Additionally, commissioners are scheduled to consider a request for a license agreement with Lighthouse Properties III, Inc., for the placement of a privately owned sculpture from 2020 SculptureTour Salina in the public right-of-way on the S. Santa Fe Avenue side of Hilton Homewood Suites in downtown Salina. The sculpture, Off the Merry-Go-Round, was displayed at that location during the tour, and Lighthouse Properties III, Inc., which has expressed and interest in purchasing the sculpture, would like it to remain there, according to information in the commission meeting packet.

Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, SculptureTour Salina representatives, and the Salina Chamber of Commerce have determined that leaving the sculpture at that location will not adversely affect the annual sculpture tour event, as there are adequate locations for work to be placed.

Commissioners also are scheduled to discuss whether to retain the services of Salina Media Connection. During the past 20 months, commissioners have discussed six times "concerns about the overall performance of SMC, with a focus on their ability to provide the public with a reliable method of viewing city meetings," according information in the commission meeting packet.

In March, the city issued a request for proposals for video streaming services. Two proposals were received. One from Swagit Productions, a national provider, and one from Eagle Communications, headquartered in Hays, but with a media production operation in Salina. (Eagle Communications also owns Salina Post.)

Because each proposal varied in terms of upfront costs, city staff prepared a three-year cost estimate for the three possible vendors. Those estimates are as follows.

Swagit, $365,120. Off-site meeting coverage and additional video production is not available.

Eagle Communications, $193,260. Additional meeting coverage, off-site meeting coverage, and video production would be at an additional hourly fee.

Salina Media Connection, $660,000*. Additional meeting coverage would be at an hourly fee and off-site meeting coverage requiring additional audio equipment would be at actual cost. *Actual fees are 40 percent of cable franchise fees and will vary over time.

Additionally, per direction from the commission, city staff has developed a plan for moving video production services in-house, the meeting information noted. Such a move would require the hiring of a new position, which would include a salary cost of between $35,000 and $60,000. According to the meeting packet information, the total budget for the position is expected to be under $100,000, "but could be higher depending on the amount of programing desired."

Other items on the city agenda for Monday include the following.

●Consider approving change order No. 1 for the 2017 water main replacement project No. 1 to Smoky Hill, LLC of Salina, in the amount of $16,302 (revised total contract amount of $2,113,405) and consider revising the contract time for substantial completion from Feb. 15, 2020, to Oct. 30, 2020.

 </figure>Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, SculptureTour Salina representatives, and the Salina Chamber of Commerce have determined that leaving the sculpture at that location will not adversely affect the annual sculpture tour event, as there are adequate locations for work to be placed.Commissioners also are scheduled to discuss whether to retain the services of Salina Media Connection. During the past 20 months, commissioners have discussed six times "concerns about the overall performance of SMC, with a focus on their ability to provide the public with a reliable method of viewing city meetings," according information in the commission meeting packet.In March, the city issued a request for proposals for video streaming services. Two proposals were received. One from Swagit Productions, a national provider, and one from Eagle Communications, headquartered in Hays, but with a media production operation in Salina. (Eagle Communications also owns Salina Post.)Because each proposal varied in terms of upfront costs, city staff prepared a three-year cost estimate for the three possible vendors. Those estimates are as follows.Swagit, $365,120. Off-site meeting coverage and additional video production is not available.Eagle Communications, $193,260. Additional meeting coverage, off-site meeting coverage, and video production would be at an additional hourly fee.Salina Media Connection, $660,000*. Additional meeting coverage would be at an hourly fee and off-site meeting coverage requiring additional audio equipment would be at actual cost. *Actual fees are 40 percent of cable franchise fees and will vary over time.Additionally, per direction from the commission, city staff has developed a plan for moving video production services in-house, the meeting information noted. Such a move would require the hiring of a new position, which would include a salary cost of between $35,000 and $60,000.
