Salina Art Center has hired Jefferson Godard as curator.&nbsp;

Godard comes from Chicago where he&nbsp;served as director&nbsp;at Aspect/Ratio Projects. He will assume his new role at the Salina Art Center on June 1.

"The Art Center&nbsp;involved&nbsp;a wide range of people in the national search for a new curator. Former directors, board members, patrons, artists, and community collaborators were engaged in the process," said Misty Serene, executive director at Salina Art Center. "Jefferson stood out to us as someone&nbsp;who was&nbsp;very knowledgeable, and who would make contemporary art engaging and accessible to all audiences."

Godard founded Aspect/Ratio Projects in 2012, which initially focused on video and performance art, exhibiting artists including Guy Ben-Ner, Alejandro Figueredo Díaz-Perera, Kate Gilmore, Sabina Ott, Casilda Sánchez, and Derrick Woods-Morrow. He also independently curated video-based exhibitions, such as "Overkill," at The Mission Chicago with artists Manon de Boer, Candice Breitz, EJ Hill, Diego Leclery, and Casilda Sánchez.&nbsp;

Trained as an architect, Godard served as adjunct faculty in Art &amp; Art History at Columbia College Chicago and has lectured at Art Cologne, College Arts Association Conference, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Northwestern University.

"I'm honored to join the Salina Art Center and continue the legacy for championing Great Plains based artists as well as introducing new voices to the Salina arts community. I also look forward to sharing video art based programming at the Art Center Cinema," said Godard. "It is a privilege to follow the legacy of previous Art Center curators Saralyn Reece Hardy, Christopher Cook, and Bill North."

Salina Art Center announces hiring of new curator

Throughout our farm you can see large, metal grain storage bins scattered about. While many farmers haul their grain to the local elevator while their crop is being harvested to either sell or to pay to have the grain stored for later sales, many also store grain in their own bins.&nbsp; &nbsp; These “big bins” as the kids call them can hold an impressive amount of grain. It allows our family the ability to store grain to sell throughout the year as the market changes.&nbsp; &nbsp; A few years ago, we had a large grain bin built near our house. This new metal “giant” has held some of our corn since last fall. The year before, it was filled with grain sorghum.&nbsp; &nbsp; Just like the stages observed during an annual life cycle of a crop, our newest bin also experiences stages. August generally sees a bin with just a few remnants of the previous crop. It’s swept and cleaned and prepared for fall harvest.&nbsp; &nbsp; September ushers in a cleaned, empty bin, which encourages the family to go for evening walks to the structure and utilize the large chamber to hold impromptu mini-concerts. My daughter prefers singing songs associated with Disney princesses at the top of her lungs, while my son likes showcasing his novice beatboxing skills.&nbsp; &nbsp; While the echoes allowed by the tall, metal walls make it feel like one is singing within a stadium, I’m sure that from outside any observer would question the cacophony of sounds produced from both kids combining their preferred vocal performances. &nbsp; Later in the fall, the concerts end, and we again review our safety rules with the kids before and while we monitor the trucks unloading grain. During this time, the bin ultimately will fill plum to the top. From late fall until early spring will welcome semi-trailers ready to be filled with golden streams of grain and then hauled to local feed yards, ethanol plants or elsewhere.&nbsp; &nbsp; The stairs which curve around the outside of the bin allow the perfect opportunity to take in scenic views and look for wildlife during these storage months. While we take in the views, no one is allowed into the bin until it’s time to start shoveling and sweeping the remains of the grain. &nbsp; Currently there’s only a thin layer of corn covering the floor of the bin. It’s the perfect time for the family to take evening walks over to the silver structure, allowing the kids the opportunity to enjoy the feeling of the kernels between their bare toes. I’ll sometimes do the same.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Later in the evenings following a visit to the bin and after bath times, I’ll come upon a small collection of grain on the floor somewhere — usually making the discovery only after stepping on the kernels. It’s better than stepping on a Lego brick.&nbsp; &nbsp; Soon the bin will be swept and cleaned completely and then sit empty for a few months. During that time, its purpose will change from holding grain to holding mini-concerts.&nbsp; &nbsp; The annual stages of the large structure will reset, and soon more grain will gather within the walls. The levels of the stored crop will slowly lower until a thin layer remains, and the kids will once again relish the feel of grain between their toes. And throughout the year, we will continue to safely enjoy the magic of a grain bin.

INSIGHT: The magic of a grain bin

Today is Wednesday, April 28, the 118th day of 2021. There are 247 days left in the year. 

On April 28, 1967, heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali was stripped of his title after he refused to be inducted into the armed forces.

In 1788, Maryland became the seventh state to ratify the Constitution of the United States. 

In 1945, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and his mistress, Clara Petacci, were executed by Italian partisans as they attempted to flee the country. 

In 1952, war with Japan officially ended as a treaty signed in San Francisco the year before took effect. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower resigned as Supreme Allied commander in Europe; he was succeeded by Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway.

In 1958, the United States conducted the first of 35 nuclear test explosions in the Pacific Proving Ground as part of Operation Hardtack I. Vice President Richard Nixon and his wife, Pat, began a goodwill tour of Latin America that was marred by hostile mobs in Lima, Peru, and Caracas, Venezuela. 

In 1980, President Jimmy Carter accepted the resignation of Secretary of State Cyrus R. Vance, who had opposed the failed rescue mission aimed at freeing American hostages in Iran. (Vance was succeeded by Edmund Muskie.) 

In 1986, the Soviet Union informed the world of the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl. 

In 1988, a flight attendant was killed and more than 60 persons injured when part of the roof of an Aloha Airlines Boeing 737 tore off during a flight from Hilo to Honolulu. 

In 1994, former CIA official Aldrich Ames, who had passed U.S. secrets to the Soviet Union and then Russia, pleaded guilty to espionage and tax evasion, and was sentenced to life in prison without parole. 

In 2001, a Russian rocket lifted off from Central Asia bearing the first space tourist, California businessman Dennis Tito, and two cosmonauts on a journey to the international space station.

In 2010, Coast Guard Rear Adm. Mary Landry said a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was worse than officials had believed, and that the federal government was offering to help industry giant BP contain the slick threatening the U.S. shoreline.

In 2015, urging Americans to "do some soul-searching," President Barack Obama expressed deep frustration over recurring black deaths at the hands of police, rioters who responded with senseless violence and a society that would only "feign concern" without addressing the root causes.

In 2019, former Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a leading voice on foreign policy during his 36 years in the Senate, died at a hospital in Virginia at the age of 87. "Avengers: Endgame" shattered the record for biggest opening weekend with an estimated $350 million in ticket sales domestically and $1.2 billion globally.

Ten years ago: President Barack Obama reshuffled his national security team, with CIA Director Leon Panetta succeeding Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Gen. David Petraeus replacing Panetta at the CIA. Convicted sex offender Phillip Garrido and his wife, Nancy, pleaded guilty to kidnapping and raping a California girl, Jaycee Dugard, who was abducted in 1991 at the age of 11 and rescued 18 years later. (Phillip Garrido was sentenced to 431 years to life in prison; Nancy Garrido was sentenced to 36 years to life in prison.) Canada's Patrick Chan won the world figure skating championships in Moscow.

Five years ago: Vice President Joe Biden pressed Iraq during an unannounced visit not to let its crippling political crisis upend hard-fought gains against the Islamic State group.

One year ago: President Donald Trump signed an executive order under the Defense Production Act to keep meat packing plants open; it classified meat processing as critical infrastructure. The Navy said the number of sailors aboard the USS Kidd who had tested positive for the coronavirus had risen to 64, or about one-fifth of the destroyer's crew. Joe Biden won Ohio's presidential primary, the first major test of statewide elections via mail amid the virus outbreak. Hillary Clinton became the latest Democrat to endorse Biden as the party continued its unification efforts. Democrat Kweisi Mfume easily won a special election to complete the term of the late Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings.

Cloud County Community College’s theatre department will present a free-one act play, Trifles on Saturday at the Concordia Broadway Plaza.

The free performance will begin at 5 p.m.

Trifles by Susan Glaspell is a one-act play surrounding an investigation of John Wright’s murder. As the men search the house, hoping to discover a motive, the ladies are left to deal with the “trifles” of gathering some necessary items for Mrs. Wright, who has been arrested for the murder. Though the men believe the women have little to worry about, they may be the ones to solve the mystery of John Wright’s death.

The cast for the performance is: Mrs. Peters, Olivia Hart, Concordia; Mrs. Hale, Chloe Springfield, Ness City; Mr. Hale, Gael Garcia, Salina; County Sheriff, Gerardo Arana, Marysville; and Mr. Peters, Dexter Buss, Concordia.

The performance is directed by Violette Kjeldgaard, Cloud County’s Theatre Director.

Salina Fire Department first in state to deploy new technology

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly today announced appointments to Kansas state boards and commissions.&nbsp;

Kansas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The mission of this Commission is to advocate for and facilitate equal access to quality, coordinated and comprehensive services that enhance the quality of life for Kansans who are deaf and hard of hearing.

● Janet Goodenow, Westmoreland (reappointment)

Kansas Hispanic and Latino American Affairs Commission

The purpose of this Commission is to develop, assist and cooperate with local Hispanic commissions.

The purpose of this Board is to develop a sentencing guideline model or grid based on fairness and equity and shall provide a mechanism for linking justice and corrections policies.

● Jessica Glendening, Lawrence (reappointment)

The Kansas Volunteer Commission prepares a national service plan for the state; ensures outreach to diverse community-based agencies; administration of certain grant programs.

● David Battey, Fairway (reappointment)

The Kansas Water Authority is responsible for advising the Governor, Legislature and Director of the Kansas Water Office on water policy issues and for approving the&nbsp;Kansas Water Plan, federal contracts, administration regulations and legislation proposed by the Kansas Water Office. The KWA provides the leadership to ensure that water policies and programs address the needs of all Kansans.

The State Employees Health Care Commission&nbsp;sets the insurance rates and structure for state employees.

Three Southeast of Saline seniors are raising money for the Leukemia &amp; Lymphoma Society and as a result are participating in the organization's 2021 Students of the Year campaign.

Makenzie Boley, Dorothy Ann Sparacino, and Luisa Ortega have set a goal to raise $75,000 for the Leukemia &amp; Lymphoma Society. Calling themselves the Power Puff Girls, the trio has dedicated their campaign to Cheryl Spare, the music accompanist at Southeast of Saline.

UPDATE April 27, 2021: It has been reported that former Vice President Walter Mondale's funeral services are being scheduled for September. Additionally, flags at the White House and the U.S. Capitol have been returned to full staff.

United States flags are to fly at half staff in honor of former Vice President Walter Mondale.

Mondale died Monday at his home in Minneapolis, Minn. He was 93.

Per U.S. Flag Code, flags should be lowered to half staff immediately and remain at half staff until sunset on the day of his interment. That date has not yet been announced.

Skin, and four poetry collections, including the 2019 Kansas Book Award
winner, Naming the Fires.&nbsp;She has twice been named Bunting Poetry
Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, and has read or served as
resident poet at many universities, including The Ohio State University,
Harvard University, the University of Kansas, the University of Montana, and
Utah State University. Her&nbsp;poetry has appeared widely,
including in The Nation, The Boston Review, Agni, Ploughshares, Ms.
Magazine, The LA Times, and in the anthology Best American Poetry.&nbsp;She is
currently at work on her fifth poetry collection, Paradise.&nbsp;

Founder of Spring Poetry Series to read tonight in closing event

More than $900 worth of items were stolen from an unlocked pickup in central Salina earlier this week.

Aaron Chapman, 23, of Salina, told police that sometime between 3:40 p.m. Sunday and 4:20 p.m. Monday, someone entered his 2018 Chevrolet Silverado pickup that was parked in the 1100 block of Sunrise Drive and stole the following items, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning.

A black 40 caliber Smith and Wesson Beretta SPA model APX handgun valued at $670

Chapman told police that he had returned from a trip and carried items into the residence, leaving the vehicle unlocked.

Handgun, rings, other items stolen from unlocked pickup

A Salina man was arrested early this morning on multiple charges after he was identified on surveillance video at the site of a burglary.

The owner of Blue Line Remodeling, 1014 E. Prescott Road, told police that when he arrived at the business Monday morning, he found that it had been burglarized. According to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester, video surveillance showed that at approximately 11:50 p.m. Sunday, a Black male wearing a maroon hoodie with “100” on it and glasses can be seen entering the business. It was reported that a black coat and numerous business checks were taken, as were numerous sets of keys. Additionally, an Acer computer monitor and a handheld digital thermometer (total loss $540) were damaged.

Upon checking business vehicles, the keys were all found in a 2000 Ford F-250 pickup and a key was in the ignition, but was the wrong key for the vehicle, Forrester noted. The pickup was valued at $3,000.

An officer recognized the subject on the video as Malique Powell, 23, of Salina, and an attempt to locate was put out for Powell, Forrester reported.  

At 1:25 a.m. on Tuesday, an officer spotted Powell sitting on a bench in the 100 block of N. Santa Fe Avenue.  Powell was wearing a maroon hoodie with “100” on it. He allegedly had several of the reported stolen checks and a methamphetamine pipe in his possession.

Powell was arrested on the following requested charges, according to Forrester.

Heartland Early Education and USD 305 Preschool classes provide opportunities for qualifying children to learn social skills, self-regulation and grow in independence. These skills prepare children for the next step of learning and helps prepare them for kindergarten. Preschool teachers are highly skilled, with training in the field of early childhood education. Low teacher-to-student ratios provide a warm and caring environment based on relationships and connections.

USD 305 Preschool&nbsp;is available to qualifying 4-year olds in all elementary schools. Each student will attend either morning or afternoon sessions, Monday through Thursday. USD 305 Preschool follows the school calendar. Students applying now will begin classes on Aug. 14.

Head Start Preschool&nbsp;for qualifying children will attend either morning or afternoon sessions, Monday through Thursday, or school day sessions, Monday through Friday. Head Start students applying now will begin classes on Aug. 17.

Parents are free to focus on their jobs when their child is cared for in a safe and nurturing environment.&nbsp; Heartland’s Early Head Start Child Care is a premier program, centered around the individual needs of each child. Highly trained and qualified teachers promote age-appropriate educational experiences throughout the day. Low child to adult ratios and small group sizes help ensure each child receives one-on-one attention from an adult who is able to take care of their unique needs.
