MANHATTAN — The beauty of Kansas agriculture has been celebrated throughout the state’s ag industry, and the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) encourages photographers to capture that beauty and share it with others through the its annual photo contest. 

KDA&nbsp; will accept entries through Aug. 16.

This year’s KDA Photo Contest categories were selected to promote different aspects of Kansas agriculture.&nbsp;Kansas Weather, Celebrating Local Foods, Water in Kansas&nbsp;and&nbsp;Rural Kansas&nbsp;categories will showcase the many places and ways we experience agriculture across the state of Kansas — from the beauty of the Flint Hills and the western plains to the family-run local ranches and colorful farmers’ markets, and the many ways that weather and water have an impact on Kansas agriculture. And for the first time ever, KDA has added a&nbsp;video&nbsp;category to showcase drone footage, harvest videos, or other short clips of under 30 seconds. As always, there will be a separate&nbsp;youth&nbsp;category, for young photographers under age 19. Prizes will be awarded to the top two winners in each of the six categories.

KDA serves to advocate for agriculture, the state’s largest industry and economic driver. Photos which best capture the categories will be used throughout the year as we tell the story of Kansas agriculture. After submission, KDA is granted permission to use any photograph for publications, social media, websites, displays, etc. without payment or other consideration from the photographer.

The American Red Cross wants you to PUMP Up The Volume!

The annual PUMP Up The Volume Salina Community Blood Drive is scheduled for noon to 7 p.m. June 28-29 and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. June 30 at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, 825 E. Beloit Avenue. The blood drive is sponsored by Eagle Radio and its entities: 99 KG, 94.5 Prime FM, KINA, and Salina Post.

Radio listeners are challenged to donate during the three-day drive and vote for their favorite participating radio station. The winning station receives bragging rights and a traveling trophy to display for a year.

Since 2010, the Pump Up the Volume Blood Drive has raised more than 4,125 donations, according to information from the American Red Cross. This year’s goal is 234 donations.

Healthy donors are asked to make an appointment to give at this year’s Pump Up the Volume Blood Drive by using the Blood Donor App, visiting&nbsp;<a href="http://redcrossblood.org/">RedCrossBlood.org</a>, calling 1-800-733-2767 or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

According to the American Red Cross, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented challenges to blood donations and in the care and treatment of cancer patients. The Red Cross continues to feel the ongoing effects of COVID-19 as each month roughly 1,000 drives are canceled, impacting the collection of approximately 30,000 units of lifesaving blood.

Additionally, the American Cancer Society reported that many patient visits and procedures were forced to be delayed or canceled early in the pandemic to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19. According to the American Cancer Society, while cancer deaths dropped at the onset of the pandemic, those rates will likely increase in the months and years to come due to delays in diagnosis and treatment

This June, the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society are teaming up to encourage people across the country to Give Blood to Give Time. Many cancer patients, especially those undergoing chemotherapy, will likely have a need for blood products. When donors give blood or platelets to the Red Cross, they’re helping cancer patients receive the care they need.

The deadline to file for local elections passed recently, and it’s worth thanking every school board hopeful and municipal candidate for their willingness to run. The past 15 months has proven what I’ve long believed — local elections have the biggest impact on the day-to-day lives of Kansans. Mask ordinances, business restrictions, how and where children attended school this past year ultimately weren’t dictated by officials in Washington and Topeka. Instead, local school boards made the call on what classrooms looked like. Your city commission or council also had the option to impose their own measures to fight the pandemic. Some did while others didn’t. I won’t say the system worked perfectly because no human endeavor ever will, but it generally worked as designed. The people making those decisions not only had to live with the effects of their decisions, but they also answered to their neighbors, friends and family members. That offers a pretty good dose of accountability. This fall, incumbents and newcomers alike will answer to voters in either the August primary or November’s general. July 13 is the deadline to register to vote for the Aug. 3 primary, and Oct. 12 is the last day to register for the election on Nov. 2. All of the contests are nonpartisan, but the lack of party affiliation doesn’t mean there’s a lack of politics. But even the fiercest debates seem cordial when compared to partisan counterparts. Bond issues to build new schools or sales tax initiatives for municipal projects are likely to be on the ballot as well. With more than 300 school districts and 600-plus cities in Kansas, there’s always demand for good candidates. The job description is essentially full-time work with little to no pay, little thanks and a good number of people with opinions on the job you are doing, even if those thoughts are belatedly relayed.

While I’ve never served in elected office, I’ve been in the room for hundreds of school board meetings or city council sessions over the years. Occasionally members of the public crowd into those meetings if there’s a big issue, but more often there’s little engagement outside of staff. For a variety of reasons, there’s an inverse relationship between the power local officials have over the public’s everyday lives and the amount of time we as citizens spend sorting through the issues. This lack of civic engagement starts at the ballot box, where voters will turnout in fewer numbers than statewide or national elections. It’s the reason why the most important quality local leaders can have is the ability to tap into their social networks and get feedback. Meetings may be where votes are counted, but the decision making process has to begin by getting input from outside the room. I’m hopeful there won’t be another year as difficult as 2020 was, but even under the best of circumstances officials often have to make decisions based on incomplete information. I’m always amazed and appreciate there are people who volunteer to serve in these roles. &nbsp; Those who step forward to fill these positions, you’ll always have my respect. I wish you well in your campaign. Should you win, your prize is weeknight meetings going to midnight or later where decisions will be second guessed by neighbors, friends and even family members. But we all owe you a debt of gratitude for your willingness to share your time, talent and perspective to make your community, and by extension the rest of the state, a better place to live.

INSIGHT: Debts of Gratitude

Salina USD 305 announced this morning the selection of Jeff Hayes as the executive director of the Central Kansas Cooperative in Education (CKCIE) effective July 1. According to the USD 305 <a href="https://www.usd305.com/">website</a>, "The Central Kansas Cooperative in Education provides special education services for twelve school districts in Central Kansas. It covers over 4,000 square miles and serves a school population of over 14,200 in preschool through grade 12. It provides special education services to approximately 2,931 exceptional students with a staff of 620." Hayes has worked at Salina USD 305 for 28 years, most recently serving for four years as assistant director of CKCIE. Previous experience at CKCIE includes 14 years as a program coordinator and 10 years as a school psychologist. Hayes earned his bachelor’s degree at Bethany College and his master’s and specialist in education degrees at Emporia State University. He obtained his building leadership license at Baker University and his district leadership license at Fort Hays State University. Mike Lowers, currently executive director at CKCIE, retires this month.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure in the distribution system due to system maintenance. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the City of Glasco indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

Boil water advisory rescinded for the City of Glasco

From May 22-31, the Saline County Sheriff's Office conducted overtime saturation patrols to aggressively enforce Kansas occupant restraint, texting, impaired driving, and other traffic laws as a part of the nationwide Click It or Ticket campaign.

According to information provided by the sheriff's office, deputies wrote 234 safety belt citations, six child restraint citations, and 27 other citations. Additionally, they made seven arrests and 256 vehicle stops during the campaign.

"We are here to enforce Kansas traffic laws and, ultimately, to decrease unsafe driving behavior. If you were stopped, we hope you learned from the experience. If so, we have made the roads a little safer for you and those you share the road with. We will continue to do that because, while the 2021 Click It or Ticket campaign may be over, traffic enforcement never is," said Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan.

Participation by the Saline County Sheriff's Office in the campaign was supported by a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Sheriff's office announces results of Click It or Ticket

If there was such a day as "National Tornado Day" it might be June 8. In 1953, a violent F5 devastated North Flint, Michigan. The tornado's track was 23 miles long and around one half mile wide. The tornado killed 115, injured 844 and caused $19 million damage. All homes over a one mile stretch on both sides of a street were obliterated. It's still the worst tornado in Michigan state history. A "family" of about five tornadoes, of which three were rated F3 or F4, raced 118 miles across Northern Ohio from Deshler to Cleveland, where it leveled around 100 homes and struck the northwest part of Hopkins Airport. The tornadoes killed 18 and injured 371. In 1966, an F5 tornado struck Topeka. With a track 22 miles long and around 1/2 mile wide, it leveled or destroyed 820 homes. A few neighborhoods vanished. Most damage occurred in an eight-mile long by four-block wide track through the center of town. There were 16 deaths, 406 injuries and around $100 million damage; $10 million of which was to Washburn University. The twister passed directly over Burnett's Mound that supposedly "protected" Topeka from tornadoes. In 1974, an outbreak of 23 tornadoes struck Kansas and Oklahoma. The worst, an F4 with a track 55 miles long and averaging 440 yards wide, tore through Drumright, located around 35 miles southwest of Tulsa. It killed 14 and injured 150. A violent F4 with a track 38 miles long and one half mile wide struck Emporia, where it killed 6, injured 220, and caused around $20 million damage. In 1941, an F4 tornado around 440 yards wide, raced 42 miles across south-central Kansas. It tracked from seven miles southwest of Maize, to the Butler/Marion County line five miles west of Burns. Eight were killed, 20 were injured and five homes were leveled. In 1951, two tornadoes struck Western Oklahoma. One was an F4 with a track 15 miles long and one half mile wide. It was the first tornado ever filmed in the United States. Fortunately there were no deaths or injuries.&nbsp;&nbsp;

By THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICEIf there was such a day as "National Tornado Day" it might be June 8. In 1953, a violent F5 devastated North Flint, Michigan. The tornado's track was 23 miles long and around one half mile wide. The tornado killed 115, injured 844 and caused $19 million damage. All homes over a one mile stretch on both sides of a street were obliterated. It's still the worst tornado in Michigan state history. A "family" of about five tornadoes, of which three were rated F3 or F4, raced 118 miles across Northern Ohio from Deshler to Cleveland, where it leveled around 100 homes and struck the northwest part of Hopkins Airport. The tornadoes killed 18 and injured 371. In 1966, an F5 tornado struck Topeka. With a track 22 miles long and around 1/2 mile wide, it leveled or destroyed 820 homes. A few neighborhoods vanished. Most damage occurred in an eight-mile long by four-block wide track through the center of town. There were 16 deaths, 406 injuries and around $100 million damage; $10 million of which was to Washburn University. The twister passed directly over Burnett's Mound that supposedly "protected" Topeka from tornadoes. In 1974, an outbreak of 23 tornadoes struck Kansas and Oklahoma. The worst, an F4 with a track 55 miles long and averaging 440 yards wide, tore through Drumright, located around 35 miles southwest of Tulsa. It killed 14 and injured 150. A violent F4 with a track 38 miles long and one half mile wide struck Emporia, where it killed 6, injured 220, and caused around $20 million damage. In 1941, an F4 tornado around 440 yards wide, raced 42 miles across south-central Kansas. It tracked from seven miles southwest of Maize, to the Butler/Marion County line five miles west of Burns. Eight were killed, 20 were injured and five homes were leveled. In 1951, two tornadoes struck Western Oklahoma. One was an F4 with a track 15 miles long and one half mile wide. It was the first tornado ever filmed in the United States. Fortunately there were no deaths or injuries.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A folded field cultivator toppled a power pole in southern Saline County Monday afternoon.

Saline County Sheriff's Captain Jim Hughes said this morning that a farmer was pulling a folded Great Plains 8560 field cultivator with an eight-wheel Case/IH Steiger 400 HD tractor in the 2400 block of W. Falun Road when the cultivator either snagged the power line or clipped the pole, causing it to snap. 

A crew from DSO Electric Cooperative repaired the line.

Hughes said that with the warmer weather, farm equipment and trucks are becoming more prevalent on county roads and soon wheat harvest will begin, adding additional grain trucks and combines to the mix. He encouraged motorists to give farm machinery and vehicles room when they encounter them on the roadways.

Police are investigating the theft of a motorcycle from a south Salina parking lot Monday afternoon.

Edward Perez, 50, of Salina, told police that his 2008 Suzuki GSX-R600 K6 motorcycle was stolen from the parking lot of the apartment complex at 815 E. Wayne Avenue sometime between 2:30-4:30 p.m. Monday, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The motorcycle had a white body, black seat, and purple rims, and was valued at $2,800.

A witness reported seeing a white Chevrolet pickup in the vicinity, but it is unclear whether it was connected to the theft, Forrester said.

Motorcycle stolen Monday afternoon in south Salina

A teen was cited after a two-vehicle accident late Monday in south Salina.

A 15-year-old Salina boy was northbound on Linda Lane in a 2006 Hyundai Tucson when he failed to yield at the intersection with Edwards Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The accident occurred at approximately 11:25 p.m. Monday.

The Tucson struck a westbound 2001 Ford Mustang driven by Kyla Johnson, 42, of Salina.

The boy received minor injuries but was not transported, Forrester said. A 43-year-old Salina woman who was a passenger in the Tucson, was not injured, he said. Additionally, Johnson and two 16-year-old boys who were passengers in the Mustang were not injured.

The Tucson had driver's side and rear passenger side damage and the Mustang had front passenger side damage. Both were towed from the scene.

The 15-year-old driver was cited for failure to yield, Forrester said.

OCCK Transportation launched KANcycle, bike sharing for rural Kansas, in June 2019, and is celebrating the program’s second birthday with some fun events the week of June 14.&nbsp;

With 16 stations and 80 bikes located throughout north central Kansas, KANcycle has been a popular transportation option with more than 200 users riding bikes more than 1,800 times in eight communities over the past few months.&nbsp; Usage is climbing with the warmer spring months and will continue over the summer.&nbsp;

Bicycles are located in Salina, Minneapolis, Concordia, Belleville, Mankato, Beloit, Lincoln, and Ellsworth.

To celebrate the bike share’s second birthday, KANcycle is inviting the communities to participate in the following come and go birthday parties.

Salina:&nbsp; June 14, 2-4 p.m. at OCCK Transportation, 340 N. Santa Fe Avenue.

Five years ago: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the U.S. Congress that the world's two largest democracies could anchor stability and prosperity from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific in an aspirational speech that glossed over continuing divisions in the relationship. Maria Sharapova was suspended for two years by the International Tennis Federation for testing positive for meldonium at the Australian Open. (The ban, which was backdated to Jan. 26, 2016, was later reduced to 15 months.)

One year ago: Thousands of mourners gathered at a church in Houston for a service for George Floyd, as his death during an arrest in Minneapolis continued to stoke protests in America and beyond over racial injustice. France's top security official said police would no longer permit chokeholds that had been blamed for multiple cases of asphyxiation and had come under renewed criticism after George Floyd's death. The police chief in Portland, Oregon, resigned, just six months into her job, amid criticism of her department's handling of protests. New York City slowly began reopening for business; stores that were previously deemed nonessential during the coronavirus shutdown were cleared to reopen for delivery and curbside pickup. New Zealand appeared to have completely eradicated the coronavirus for the time being; health officials aid the last person known to have been infected in the country had recovered.
