The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) plans to begin a field survey on Monday to gather information that is necessary for the detailed design of proposed road improvements on Kansas Highway 4 (K-4) in Saline County.

The location being surveyed is for approximately 2.25 miles of K-4, 1,600 feet east of Niles Road to .5 miles east of Kipp Road.

The survey will take place on the existing highway alignment.

KDOT expects the survey to be completed by Aug. 14. Activities include the use of survey instruments on the ground to determine locations of existing features within the corridor.

A member of the survey crew will contact property owners or tenants for permission to enter private property.

Kara LaRiviere, P.S., Survey Project Manager, of Garber Surveying will be in charge of this survey for KDOT. Persons with questions may contact KDOT Public Affairs Manager Ashley Perez at (785)826-6799.

The city has announced that it will be closing a portion of N. Delaware Avenue for pavement work.

Beginning Monday, the City of Salina Public Works Department will be replacing sections of pavement on N. Delaware Avenue, north of E. Iron Avenue.

While in repair, N. Delaware Avenue from E. Iron Avenue to Johnstown Avenue will be closed to through traffic. Weather permitting, repairs are expected to be completed within two weeks.

City: Pavement work set for N. Delaware beginning Monday

Twenty-one new law enforcement officers graduated from the&nbsp;Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center&nbsp;(KLETC) on Friday at a ceremony held in KLETC’s Integrity Auditorium.

Officer Kaelin Leach of the Hays Police Department was the graduating class president. The speaker for the ceremony was Chief of Police for the Abilene Police Department, Anna Hatter. Steve McCorkill, KLETC Senior Instructor of Police, was the Class Coordinator for the 279th Basic Training Class.

Officer Nicholas Pate of the Overbrook Police Department was named the Welch Award Winner for having the highest academic achievement over 94 percent in the class. Officer Randall Douvier from the Newton Police Department was recognized during the ceremony for his firearms proficiency as the class’ “Top Shot”. Officer Cassidy Fox from the Leavenworth Police Department walked, ran, or biked more than 200 miles during her time at KLETC and exceeded the other physical requirements of the 200 Mile Club including push-ups, sit-ups, and a timed run. Officer Jeffery McKinney from the Abilene Police Department was honored as the student with the most improved fitness since the beginning of basic training.

Graduates receive certificates of course completion from KLETC and Kansas law enforcement certification from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority. The training course fulfills the state requirement for law enforcement training. Classroom lectures and hands-on applications help train officers to solve the increasingly complex problems they face in the line of duty.

Established by the Kansas Legislature in 1968, KLETC trains the majority of municipal, county and state law enforcement officers in Kansas and oversees the training of the remaining officers at seven authorized and certified academy programs operated by local law enforcement agencies and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

About 300 officers enroll annually in KLETC 14-week basic training programs. KLETC offers continuing education and specialized training to over 10,000 Kansas officers each year. KLETC is located one mile west and one mile south of Yoder, near Hutchinson, and is a division of the University of Kansas Lifelong &amp; Professional Education.

The graduates, who began their training in March 2021, represented 19 municipal, county, and state law enforcement agencies from across Kansas. Graduates are listed below by county and agency:

(An autopsy found that Brooks had been shot twice in the back. Officer Garrett Rolfe faces charges including murder.) The American Red Cross wants you to PUMP Up The Volume!

The annual PUMP Up The Volume Salina Community Blood Drive is scheduled for noon to 7 p.m. June 28-29 and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. June 30 at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, 825 E. Beloit Avenue. The blood drive is sponsored by Eagle Radio and its entities: 99 KG, 94.5 Prime FM, KINA, and Salina Post.

Radio listeners are challenged to donate during the three-day drive and vote for their favorite participating radio station. The winning station receives bragging rights and a traveling trophy to display for a year.

Since 2010, the Pump Up the Volume Blood Drive has raised more than 4,125 donations, according to information from the American Red Cross. This year’s goal is 234 donations.

Healthy donors are asked to make an appointment to give at this year’s Pump Up the Volume Blood Drive by using the Blood Donor App, visiting&nbsp;<a href="http://redcrossblood.org/">RedCrossBlood.org</a>, calling 1-800-733-2767 or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

According to the American Red Cross, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented challenges to blood donations and in the care and treatment of cancer patients. The Red Cross continues to feel the ongoing effects of COVID-19 as each month roughly 1,000 drives are canceled, impacting the collection of approximately 30,000 units of lifesaving blood.

Additionally, the American Cancer Society reported that many patient visits and procedures were forced to be delayed or canceled early in the pandemic to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19. According to the American Cancer Society, while cancer deaths dropped at the onset of the pandemic, those rates will likely increase in the months and years to come due to delays in diagnosis and treatment

This June, the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society are teaming up to encourage people across the country to Give Blood to Give Time. Many cancer patients, especially those undergoing chemotherapy, will likely have a need for blood products. When donors give blood or platelets to the Red Cross, they’re helping cancer patients receive the care they need.

AMES, Iowa – More than 10,500 Iowa State University students have been recognized for outstanding academic achievement by being named to the spring semester 2021 Dean's List. 

Students named to the Dean's List must have earned a grade point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.00 scale while carrying a minimum of 12 credit hours of graded coursework.&nbsp;

Benjamin Goering Nikkel, a senior in agricultural business from McPherson, is among the students who earned academic honors.

Do you remember the EF-3 tornado that went through Saline County near Salina on June 11, 2008?

According to the National Weather Service, an "intense thunderstorm developed and tracked through Saline County around 9:40 p.m. producing a tornado. This tornado moved east-northeast with a path length of about 14 miles and a maximum intensity of EF-3."

The tornado originally touched down west of Interstate 135 south of the Salina Regional Airport.  

"It then traveled  along the southeast outskirts of Salina where it damaged several homes, outbuildings, trees and power lines. EF-3 damage was noted near the intersection of East Shilling Road and South Holmes Road," the weather service noted.

Additionally, the tornado caused some EF-2 damage near the intersection of E. Crawford Street and S. Whitmore Road. It continued on a northeasterly track, crossing into Dickinson County south of Solomon.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander has a message for motorists in the county: lock your vehicles, and if you have to leave valuables in your vehicle, keep them out of sight.

Two vehicles in the same part of the county were burglarized during the same time period Thursday. It is believed that the two cases, which are still under investigation, are connected, Melander said.

In the first of the two cases reported to the sheriff's office, Shuwen Wang, 54, of Salina, reported that he had parked his 2018 Honda Accord in a parking lot at the Land Institute, 2400 Water Well Road at 9 a.m. Thursday When he returned to his car at approximately noon, he discovered that his debit card, a credit card, and miscellaneous cash were missing from his wallet that he had left in the car's console, Melander said. There was no sign of forced entry, Melander added.

In the second case, Kimberly Fulkerson, 43, of Salina, reported that while she and her daughter were taking a walk at the Marty Bender Nature Trail, 3000 S. Holmes Road, someone broke into her locked 2019 Mazda CX9 and took credit cards and miscellaneous cash, Melander said. The incident occurred between 10:18-11:10 a.m. Thursday. Melander said the lock on the driver's side door had been punched out.

"If you're gonna go out and have fun, if you have to put your stuff in the trunk, put it in the trunk. Lock your car. Don't let stuff be visible out there. Don't leave your wallet in your car. Don't leave your handgun unattended in your car," Melander said. "That's just basically putting a flashing sign on top of your hood."

Comfort Heating &amp; Air presents the Toughest Monster Truck Tour at 7 p.m. June 26 in Tony's Pizza Events Center, 800 The Midway.

The trailer is a white and silver, 2020 Jayco, Jay Feather 27RL camping trailer with Kansas tag 478MZA. It is&nbsp;valued at $28,000.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about stolen camping trailer

ABILENE - Employees of Memorial Health System (MHS) recently wore blue jeans at work for a Jeans Day fundraiser. 

Employees who made a donation of at least $5 were allowed to wear blue jeans on the last Friday of May. A total donation of $160 was presented to Laundry Love of Abilene.

The Laundry Love initiative consists of regular opportunities to come alongside people who are struggling financially by assisting them with their laundry.&nbsp; Laundry Love of Abilene is a local program directed by Holly Walker in partnership with The Cedar House in Abilene. Laundry Love fosters community participation within a neighborhood through the many layers of connection it inspires. Laundry Love partners with groups, and local laundromats, in cleaning clothes and linens of families and individuals.

Memorial Health System employees donate to Laundry Love of Abilene

I’m on Baby Step 2, and I’m working hard to get out of debt. My last two debts are $6,000 on a credit card, and $10,000 on a car loan. I’ll be receiving a $6,000 bonus at work in a couple of weeks, and I was wondering what to do with the money. I’m single, and I make about $45,000 a year, so should I sell the car and get rid of some debt that way, or use the extra money to completely pay off the credit card debt?

Just remember the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/debt-calculator" target="_blank">debt snowball</a>—pay off your smallest to largest. In your case, that means knocking out the credit card debt completely, and&nbsp;then&nbsp;attack the car loan with a vengeance. It will be a lot easier once you’re rid of that credit card debt. A $10,000 car with a $45,000 income isn’t unreasonable, but don’t mess around and let that note hang around longer than absolutely necessary.

My rule of thumb when it comes to things with motors, wheels—I’m talking about big toys, here—is when they’re all added together, they shouldn’t equal more than half your annual income. You don’t want that much money wrapped up in things that are going down in value. You’re in no danger of that here, but at this point you’re so close to being debt-free you can practically taste it.

Follow the plan, Aaron. And stay focused and intense about becoming debt-free. You’re almost there!

Recently, I made a claim on my homeowner’s insurance for hail damage. It was my first claim ever. Since I’m retired and completely debt-free—including my home—and have over $1 million in the bank, is homeowner’s insurance still a good idea? The house is insured for $250,000, with a $5,000 deductible, and the insurance is about $1,200 a year.

If something disastrous happened, you could write a check to cover the deductible with no problem. But writing a check for $250,000? You’d feel that one. Keep the policy, Mary!
