Salina USD 305 has announced the details of its Summer Food Service Program's Free Grab-and-Go Lunch.

All children ages 1-18 are eligible for the free meals, which are scheduled to be distributed 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 15-July 23. Children must be present to receive the meals. Additionally, adult meals will be available for $5 per meal.

No meals will be served July 5-6, the district noted in a news release. Should there be a severe weather warning, the meal sites will be closed.

No sign-up or paperwork is required for children to participate in the program, according to information from the district.

Drive-through or walk-up distribution will be available at eight sites across the city. They are as follows.

Central High School, 650 E. Crawford Street

Cottonwood Elementary School, 215 S. Phillips Avenue

Heartland Early Education, 700 Jupiter Avenue

Heusner Elementary School, 1300 Norton Street

Salina Fieldhouse, 140 N. Fifth Street

June commodities distribution set for later this week

In an 8-to-2 vote, the Kansas State Board of Education (KSBE) turned back the clock on high school science education requirements in a move that also could weaken mathematics. In adopting the option to substitute a fuzzily-defined computer course in place of a math or science Kansas high school graduation requirement, they continued the decline in Kansas science education requirements that have also been occurring nationwide this last decade.

Thirty years ago, a Kansas student could fulfill the high school science graduation requirement by taking home ec and shop! That came to a stop under former Commissioner Andy Tompkins and an enlightened board that recognized neither of those courses were science. Not only was the content of those courses not science, neither home ec or shop teachers were trained science teachers—and you can’t teach what you don’t know. Kansas is now in a similar position. Computer courses contain no science or math content, and computer teachers—if their credentials are ever resurrected or clarified—are not science or math trained teachers either.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Kansas science graduation requirements were further boosted by a 1997 decision, effective in 2001, by the Kansas Board of Regents to include a course in either chemistry or physics for college admissions. But that was eliminated over two years ago when the KBOR dramatically reduced qualified admissions in an effort to address falling enrollment. Now the KSBE’s decision to allow schools districts to use a computer course in place of a math or science requirement comes at a time when the extent of science illiteracy during the pandemic this last year has been obvious nationwide. Instead of requiring more science, Kansas has now joined a growing number of states that are likewise letting computer courses substitute for math and science or other academic courses of substance.

Advocates from code.org and other computer promoters presented Kansas as only one of two states (Connecticut was the other) that had not adopted this measure, although KSBE member Ann Mah from Topeka clarified that only 7 states had used the math/science substitution. KSBE member Michelle Dombrosky from the Johnson County region also pointed out how industry has a role and responsibility in providing programs that trained for what is currently needed, in contrast to the various poorly-defined computer skills that are soon out-of-date. But neither were able to sway the remaining board members.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

“Computational thinking” was the snake oil being pushed as a rationale for why a computer course would substitute for a math or science course. Examples provided in the May and June meetings included various problems that were “solved” with the use of computer programs. But in every example given, the computer was a tool used by a physicist or a biologist or mathematician to solve a problem. If you did not know physics or biology or math, the tool was useless. And this proposal allows the elimination of a math or science course.&nbsp; The assertion that critical thinking and problem solving could be promoted without content knowledge has now fooled 49 states into this computer myth. &nbsp;

One advocate even praised the increased involvement of students in videogaming as another reason to move this direction. There was no recognition that we have lost approximately 15 percent of male students worldwide to videogame addiction, resulting in their much lower percentages in college.

The effect on Kansas high schools will vary because each school district determines graduation requirements beyond the state minimum. Affluent high schools may retain strong requirements, fully licensed math and science teachers, and a student body where few will desire to avoid a math or science course. However, our large number of small unconsolidated rural schools as well as the larger non-affluent high schools already have a growing number of out-of-field teachers and many students wanting to take the easiest path to graduation. With the shortage of qualified science and math teachers, it is&nbsp; certain that some schools will utilize a computer course to compensate for their inability to hire a qualified math or science teacher.

This in turn de-fuses the dramatic need for more qualified science and math teachers in Kansas and nationwide. Conscious decisions such as these are moving the United States toward a more severe level of science illiteracy. Home ec and shop were not science or math, and neither is a computer course.&nbsp;&nbsp;

ED FRONTLINES: State board of education weakens math, science

Since 1916, the United States has offically been celebrating Flag Day, though some people around the country celebrated the flag for years before. U.S. President Woodrow Wilson on May 30, 1916, signed a presidental proclamation establishing a national Flag Day on June 14. 

"The day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States," the Library of Congress noted on its <a href="http://www.americaslibrary.gov/">website</a>.

Later, on Aug. 3, 1949, Congress, in a joint resolution, officially designated that June 14 be recognized as Flag Day each year. Congress also requested that the sitting president issue an annual proclamation calling for the observance of Flag Day. The most recent proclamation can be seen below. 

What is the significance of June 14? On June 14, 1777, John Adams proposed the following resolution to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia:

Resolved, that the flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation.

The national flag of the new country was adopted that day.

According to information from the Library of Congress, there have been 27 official versions of the United States' flag. As states joined the union, additional stars were added to the flag. The most recent version of the flag came about after Hawaii became the 50th state on Aug. 21, 1959.

Celebrating the Flag of the United States

Today is Monday, June 14, the 165th day of 2021. There are 200 days left in the year. This is Flag Day. 

On June 14, 1993, President Bill Clinton nominated Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. 

In 1775, the Continental Army, forerunner of the United States Army, was created. 

In 1777, the Second Continental Congress approved the design of the original American flag. 

In 1846, a group of U.S. settlers in Sonoma proclaimed the Republic of California. 

In 1911, the British ocean liner RMS Olympic set out on its maiden voyage for New York, arriving one week later. (The ship's captain was Edward John Smith, who went on to command the ill-fated RMS Titanic the following year.)

One year ago: Atlanta police released video showing the sobriety check of Rayshard Brooks outside a Wendy's restaurant that quickly spun out of control, ending in police gunfire that left Brooks dead. Police said Officer Garrett Rolfe, who fired the fatal shots, had been fired, and officer Devin Brosnan was placed on administrative duty. (Rolfe's firing was later reversed after a review panel found the city failed to follow its own procedures for disciplinary actions.)

These classes are held at the Home Health and Hospice office, 11 N. Broadway, Herington. Lindsey Brummer, Bereavement Coordinator, serves as the group facilitator.&nbsp;

These gatherings are designed to help individuals work through the period of transition, allow time for sharing personal experiences and feelings, and provide guidance toward learning and coping skills.&nbsp;

The public is welcome to attend the free sessions. Persons interested in the support group are encouraged to bring along a supportive person. Pre-registration is not required.&nbsp;

The Saline County General election is scheduled for Nov. 2.

Following are the races in Saline County, according to the Saline County Election Office.

Eight candidates are vying for three seats on the Salina City Commission. Those seats are currently held by Aaron Peck, Melissa Rose Hodges, and Mike Hoppock. Candidates for the three commission seats include the following.

Two people have filed to run for three council seats (four-year terms). Those positions are currently held by AJ Boyer, Bill Mondt, and Rick Tanner. Candidates for the three council seats are:

One person has filed for the Brookville mayor position (two-year term) and two others have filed for five council seats (two-year terms). The mayor currently is Ralph Johnson. Those currently holding council seats are Shawn Fisher, David Graf, Tony Wolff, Faye Woodson, and Joe Wright.

Incumbent Ralph Johnson has filed for mayor. Candidates for the council positions include the following.

One person has filed for the Gypsum mayor position (four-year term) and three people have filed for two open council positions (four-year term). The mayor currently is Sandy Kruse. Those currently holding council seats are David Jackson and Michael Russell.

Local, area students earn academic honors at Bethany College

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansans with a driver’s license or identification card that expired between March 12, 2020, and March 30, 2021, have until June 30 to renew those credentials. This is due to the COVID-19 extension for these credentials expiring with the passage of Senate Bill 127.

In April, the Kansas Department of Revenue’s Division of Vehicles sent out more than 55,700 postcards to Kansans who have not renewed their license or identification card and would be affected by the deadline. As of June 1, there are still 45,000 Kansans needing to renew their credentials.

“In addition to ending the COVID-19 extension for expired credentials, the legislation expanded the age range on mobile renewals,” David Harper, the Division of Vehicles director, said. “Summer is typically a busy time for our offices as teen drivers come in for the first time. Because of that, we are heavily encouraging the use of iKan, the Department’s online driver’s license renewal system.”

Mobile renewals are open to Kansans who are 21 to 64 years old, have had a vision test within the past year, and their license is up to one year before or after expiration.

Renewal deadline nears for driver's license, ID cards under COVID-19 extension

Stand out above the crowd – in fact, 14 feet above the crowd. What makes this possible? Pole vaulting. Today we will learn about an innovative rural Kansan who is coaching and mentoring young people in pole vaulting and in life.&nbsp;

Dr. Mark Breault (pronounced “bro”) is the founder and operator of Tailwind Pole Vault Club. Mark grew up at Concordia, attended Cloud County Community College and then chiropractic college in Iowa before returning to open a chiropractic practice in his hometown. As a doctor of chiropractic, he became known locally as Doc Bro. He retired in 2014.&nbsp;

“I had pole vaulted in high school,” Doc said. “When my son got into school, there was no coach for that event. My old coach was still the head track coach there, so I volunteered to coach the pole vaulters.”&nbsp;

His coaching responsibilities expanded. “In the first year I coached junior high, the second year I coached junior high and high school, and in the third year I coached junior high, high school, and college,” he said. As his pole vaulters’ success grew, students and families from other schools approached him about coaching them as well.&nbsp;

In 2007, Coach Breault started his own independent pole vault group. Because a good tailwind always helps a pole vaulter, he named it Tailwind Pole Vault Club.&nbsp;

But where could his club have an indoor facility? Pole vaulting is the type of activity which can’t be conducted in your typical storefront building. It requires a long space and high ceiling.&nbsp;

Doc looked around the region and found that the nearby community of Jamestown had a former high school building, including a gymnasium, that was available. “At first they just let me use it for free,” Doc said. “Eventually I bought the building and remodeled it.” Now the facility includes living space where Doc lives, plus a wrestling area and weight room in addition to the runway, box, crossbar and pit used for pole vaulting itself. More than 500 poles are also available for rent. The former school stage is now a little kids’ play area. “It’s very family friendly,” Doc said. &nbsp;

Pole vaulting camps are held in the summer. Those camps typically sell out well in advance.&nbsp;

The Tailwind Pole Vault Club has had tremendous success through the years. “Multiple Olympic vaulters, All-Americans and world-record holders have coached and jumped here,” Doc said. “We’ve had more than 200 state champions and multiple national champions from our club.”&nbsp;

But this isn’t only about pole vaulting. It is about positive life skills. “Pole vaulting is an excuse for me to interact with people,” Doc said with a smile. “Kids need a positive experience. My greatest reward is to see them learn and grow in self-confidence and succeed in life.”&nbsp;

One camp slogan is “Don’t get high, Jump high.”&nbsp;

“I tell kids that anyone can go out and drink or do drugs, but it takes a special person to commit to pole vaulting,” he said. “You can stand out above the crowd. Not many guys can jump 14 feet. Not many girls can jump 10 feet, but we can teach you to pole vault,” Doc said. “It takes hard work and focus, but we can do it.”&nbsp;

“We also teach kids to work with others. We don’t allow cocky attitudes.&nbsp;&nbsp;Everyone is taught to help the younger kids. We focus on having fun, being safe, and jumping high.”&nbsp;

Many kids who trained at Tailwind Pole Vault Club have gotten college scholarships at some level. Vaulters have come from as far away as California and Florida.&nbsp;

That’s a remarkable record for a program at the rural community of Jamestown, population 286 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

IOWA CITY, Iowa - This spring, some 5,300 University of Iowa undergraduate, graduate, and professional students received their degrees under extraordinary circumstances. 

With the coronavirus pandemic continuing to upend traditional educational practices across campus and the country, the 2020-21 academic year has been a challenge.

Jarred Stindt, of Republic was among the students conferred their degrees. Stindt was a student in the College of Law whose program of study was law. The degree awarded was a Juris Doctor.

For more than a year, Stindt and other Iowa students have made sacrifices to maintain health and safety-taking online courses, wearing face masks, and being mindful of social distance. Through it all, however, Hawkeyes have persisted and excelled. A graduating biomedical engineering student is a 2021 Rhodes Scholar. A biochemistry major was named one of only 17 Churchill scholars in the nation, while two other undergraduates, a math major and a biomedical engineering major, became Goldwater scholars.
