At least 21,387 people have been vaccinated in Saline County. This accounts for approximately 39.4 percent of the total population and an increase of just .4 percent over the previous week. We are aware of a reporting issue with federal providers like CVS, the VA, and others who are not reporting their vaccination numbers at the state level. We are awaiting a fix on the federal level.

One additional death due to COVID-19 has been reported. Salina Regional Health Center reported today that four people require hospitalization for COVID-19. While medical privacy laws prevent the release of identifying information, teens and young adults account for the bulk of the new and active cases in the county, while most of the people requiring hospitalization are in their 40s, 50s, or 60s.

In fact, the Saline County Health officer reports that since the beginning of June, just four people over the age of 70 have tested positive for the virus.

A variant of COVID-19 has been detected in 25 of the 149 specimens the Kansas Department of Health and Environment has sequenced from Saline County. To celebrate the beginning of a new age of waste collection for the City of Salina, a public ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held Friday.

The ceremony is scheduled for 8 a.m. Friday at the City of Salina water treatment plant, located at the corner of S. Fourth Street and E. South Street.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will not only welcome the new trucks to our streets but also acknowledge and thank everyone involved in making automated waste collection possible for the City of Salina. To help celebrate this accomplishment, the City of Salina’s Mayor, City Manager, City Commissioners, Director of Public Works and many others will be in attendance. Please note that South Street from Fourth Street to Fifth Street will be closed from 6-9 a.m.

Salina Area United Way: Sign young children up for free books

Being the music director and conductor for the Salina Symphony entails a lot more than “picking up a baton on the Stiefel stage on a Sunday afternoon,” according to Kyle Campbell, vice-president of the organization’s board of directors.

The ideal music director must not only be passionate about connecting with and leading a 60-plus piece orchestra, Campbell said, but he or she also must want to be an active member of the Salina community.

“They must be passionate about the roles the arts play in the community and want to expand that to more and more people, so they will have access to great music,” he said.

Campbell heads the search committee to seek the right candidate to replace longtime Symphony music director and conductor Ken Hakoda. The global search, which began nearly two years ago, resulted in more than 100 applicants. That eventually was narrowed down to the 30 candidates and finally to the top five finalists.

These five finalists now will have the opportunity to conduct a concert during the Salina Symphony’s 2021-2022 “Pass the Baton” season, which begins Oct. 3 at the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts, 151 S. Santa Fe.

The concerts will only be part of what the search committee will be evaluating in each candidate, Campbell said.

“We want patrons to have an excellent experience (at the concerts), but we also want to see how the candidates interact with the musicians and with members of the community outside of the concert venue,” he said. “Whoever comes here as music director will become a very visible part of the community and also will be guiding our organization into the future.”

Yaniv Attar, music director of the Bellingham (Wash.) Symphony Orchestra and the Pennsylvania Chamber Orchestra and artistic partner of Northwest Sinfonietta (Wash.).

Mélisse Brunet, music director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic and director of orchestral activities at the University of Iowa School of Music.

Devin Patrick Hughes, music director of the Boulder (Colo.) Symphony and the Arapahoe (Colo.) Philharmonic.

Yaniv Segal, assistant conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and conductor laureate/advisor of the Chelsea (NY) Symphony.

Vlad Vizireanu, principal guest conductor of the Ploiesti (Romania) Philharmonic and founder/executive director of the New Impulse Music Festival (Calif.).

Each finalist will spend two weeks in Salina working with Salina Symphony musicians and staff, as well as be involved in community outreach and events, said Adrienne Allen, executive director of the Salina Symphony.

“In addition to being highly skilled at conducting, I believe it will be important for our new music director to have a vision for leading the orchestra into the future, as well as the ability to inspire others toward that vision,” she said. “Our candidates’ time in Salina will provide a wonderful opportunity for us to learn more about what that vision might look like.”

Candidates have programmed concerts that will feature an opening piece that may be a new or contemporary work, followed by a concerto featuring an accomplished guest artist, Allen said.

“Each candidate will perform with a guest artist because it’s important for us to observe how they work with other musicians,” she said.

Each concert will conclude with a full symphonic work, she said.

Since the new music director will become part of the community, Allen said, Salina Symphony patrons and community members will have a major input in the selection process.

“The search committee values the feedback of the community,” she said. “We will be inviting concertgoers to provide feedback following each concert. We also encourage patrons to attend the pre-concert talks from our candidates, (and) symphony donors and sponsors will be invited to meet our candidates in person at post-concert receptions.”

There also will be pre-concert talks and post-concert receptions with each candidate, Allen said.

Gabe Grant, Salina Symphony board president, said each candidate will bring their own unique vision to their concerts, which should make for an exciting season.

“We’re going to see different personas bringing a variety of programming and new things for people to see,” he said. “They’ll all be bringing their ‘A’ game for each concert.”

Choosing the right music director from such accomplished candidates will be a great challenge, Grant said.

“In the end, we’ll get a top-notch conductor playing with a great orchestra in downtown Salina,” he said. “They’ll be a permanent part of the Salina community and help make Salina that much more of an attractive arts destination.”

The schedule for this season’s concerts, featuring the music director/conductor finalists, is:

Oct. 3 – “Musical Landscapes,” featuring Devin Patrick Hughes and guest violinist Siwoo Kim. Featured will be Victor Herbert’s “American Fantasia,” Max Bruch’s “Scottish Fantasy” and Dvorak’s Symphony No 9 in E minor.

Nov. 7 – “Give Birth to the Dream,” featuring Mélisse Brunet and guest soprano Janie Brokenicky. Featured will be Saint-Saën's “Danse Macabre,” Gournod’s “Ah! Je veux vivre” from “Romeo and Juliet,” Joan Tower’s “Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman No. 1,” Dolores White’s “Give Birth to the Dream” and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A major.

Jan. 30 – “Take Flight,” featuring Yaniv Segal and cellist Hannah Collins. Featured will be Dvorak’s “Slavonic Dance,” Polina Nazaykinskaya’s “Fenix,” Haydn’s “Cello Concerto No. 1” and Sibelius’ Symphony No. 5 in E-flat major.

March 27 – “Melodic Journey,” featuring Yaniv Attar and guest guitarist Daniel Bolshoy. Featured will be Arturo Márquez’ “Danzon No. 2,” Joaquin Rodigo’s “Concerto de Aranjuez” and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E minor.

May 1 – “Symphonic Dancers” featuring Vlad Vizireanu and guest pianist Lorraine Min. Featured will be Mason Bates’ “Mothership,” Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat minor and Rachmaninoff’s “Symphonic Dances.”

In addition, the annual Salina Symphony Christmas Festival concert will be Dec. 11 and 12 under the baton of interim conductor David Littrell, featuring performances by the Iron Street Dance Company, Tamara Howe School of Dance, Salina Chorale, Kansas Wesleyan University Chorale, and the Salina Youth Choir.

By GARY DEMUTH For the Salina SymphonyBeing the music director and conductor for the Salina Symphony entails a lot more than “picking up a baton on the Stiefel stage on a Sunday afternoon,” according to Kyle Campbell, vice-president of the organization’s board of directors.The ideal music director must not only be passionate about connecting with and leading a 60-plus piece orchestra, Campbell said, but he or she also must want to be an active member of the Salina community.“They must be passionate about the roles the arts play in the community and want to expand that to more and more people, so they will have access to great music,” he said.Campbell heads the search committee to seek the right candidate to replace longtime Symphony music director and conductor Ken Hakoda. The global search, which began nearly two years ago, resulted in more than 100 applicants. That eventually was narrowed down to the 30 candidates and finally to the top five finalists.These five finalists now will have the opportunity to conduct a concert during the Salina Symphony’s 2021-2022 “Pass the Baton” season, which begins Oct. 3 at the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts, 151 S. Santa Fe.The concerts will only be part of what the search committee will be evaluating in each candidate, Campbell said.“We want patrons to have an excellent experience (at the concerts), but we also want to see how the candidates interact with the musicians and with members of the community outside of the concert venue,” he said. “Whoever comes here as music director will become a very visible part of the community and also will be guiding our organization into the future.”The five finalists are:<figure>

 </figure>Vlad Vizireanu, principal guest conductor of the Ploiesti (Romania) Philharmonic and founder/executive director of the New Impulse Music Festival (Calif.).Each finalist will spend two weeks in Salina working with Salina Symphony musicians and staff, as well as be involved in community outreach and events, said Adrienne Allen, executive director of the Salina Symphony.“In addition to being highly skilled at conducting, I believe it will be important for our new music director to have a vision for leading the orchestra into the future, as well as the ability to inspire others toward that vision,” she said. “Our candidates’ time in Salina will provide a wonderful opportunity for us to learn more about what that vision might look like.”Candidates have programmed concerts that will feature an opening piece that may be a new or contemporary work, followed by a concerto featuring an accomplished guest artist, Allen said.“Each candidate will perform with a guest artist because it’s important for us to observe how they work with other musicians,” she said.Each concert will conclude with a full symphonic work, she said.Since the new music director will become part of the community, Allen said, Salina Symphony patrons and community members will have a major input in the selection process.“The search committee values the feedback of the community,” she said. “We will be inviting concertgoers to provide feedback following each concert. We also encourage patrons to attend the pre-concert talks from our candidates, (and) symphony donors and sponsors will be invited to meet our candidates in person at post-concert receptions.”There also will be pre-concert talks and post-concert receptions with each candidate, Allen said.Gabe Grant, Salina Symphony board president, said each candidate will bring their own unique vision to their concerts, which should make for an exciting season.“We’re going to see different personas bringing a variety of programming and new things for people to see,” he said. “They’ll all be bringing their ‘A’ game for each concert.”Choosing the right music director from such accomplished candidates will be a great challenge, Grant said.“In the end, we’ll get a top-notch conductor playing with a great orchestra in downtown Salina,” he said. “They’ll be a permanent part of the Salina community and help make Salina that much more of an attractive arts destination.”The schedule for this season’s concerts, featuring the music director/conductor finalists, is:Oct. 3 – “Musical Landscapes,” featuring Devin Patrick Hughes and guest violinist Siwoo Kim. Thunderstorms are possible late this evening. Portions of central Kansas could get a strong storm or two with wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph being the main concern.

Enrollment will be at Salina Central High School, 650 E. Crawford Street, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.&nbsp; Passengers will just need to tell the driver that they are going to enrollment.&nbsp; 

Central High School is stop No. 40 on the Blue Route.&nbsp; Buses will be at that stop at :50 after each hour during regular hours (6 a.m. to 9 p.m.) and at :20 each hour during peak hours (6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.).

The Greater Salina Community Foundation is now accepting grant applications for its August grant cycle. 

Online applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 15, 2021.

This cycle will support charitable projects in Saline County that meet one or more of the following criteria:

• Projects that improve the quality of life for Saline County residents.

• Projects or programs that support and encourage healthy living across Saline County.

• Projects that improve quality of life for citizens of Assaria.

• Organizations or programs in Saline or Ottawa Counties whose work furthers the care, education, development, health, safety and human service needs of children ages 0-6 to better prepare them for kindergarten.

• Projects that promote hands-on learning opportunities for school-age youth in the areas of arts, humanities, science, technology and invention.

• Projects or programs that address arts and culture, community beautification, community social services and security, conservation and environment, education and health care.

Funding for the August community grant cycle is provided by the Assaria Community Fund, the Fund for Early Childhood Care, Education and Development, the Kansas Health Foundation Fund for GSCF, the L.P. “Pat” Mullen Fund, the Dane G Hansen Community Grant Fund, and the Fund for Greater Salina.

Grants are limited to communities in Saline County and will be awarded through a competitive application process. Requests for funding up to $5,000 will be considered. Nonprofit organizations, government and public entities, educational institutions and churches are encouraged to apply.

Applications must be submitted online by 11:59 p.m. on August 15. Funding guidelines and the grant application are available at <a href="http://www.gscf.org">www.gscf.org</a>.

One of the hardest parts about making a new life in Kansas for me has been missing so much of my old life in Wisconsin. In my early years as a Kansan, I longed for things here to feel more like home. Over time my appreciation for Kansas has grown, and it has begun to feel like home to me. I didn’t realize until recently that the trade-off for this connection and comfort to my new home state was made possible by drifting further from my old one. Since I left for college more than 15 years ago, I always managed to make a handful of trips home each year. With COVID, my visits were limited, and the time between felt somehow longer. Over the Fourth of July holiday, I returned to my childhood home for a visit. As I drove into town around midnight, I felt tired from the 12-hour trek, but I kept blinking my eyes because everything seemed strange. Things felt smaller — the buildings, the distance between streets. Trees and other vegetation seemed bigger, like they were swallowing up the road. The pavement seemed to be faded and cracked in a way I had never noticed before. Barns and sheds I swear were in good shape the last time I drove by are falling down. &nbsp; For a few days, it was like having a surreal dream in which I knew the places, people and sites around me but they were all somehow slightly foreign to me. On my trip home, I was thinking about why things had felt so different and a light bulb went off in my head. The place where I grew up was no longer mine. The nostalgia of our childhoods is powerful. These places grew us, and it can devastating to lose the physical connection to them.&nbsp; A person can know that the home of a long-gone, beloved relative has been demolished and still have their heart skip a beat when they see the reality replacing the faded memory. Alumni can be aware of a school merger changing the name, mascots and colors but not realize how bizarre it will feel to see a new team playing on the same field they once occupied. It was a bittersweet recognition I am an outsider in my hometown. My parents’ home will always be my childhood home, but it is no longer my home. The town is full of people and places that evoke fond memories and have a special place in my heart, but I am no longer a part of their community. When we no longer own these places, it can be hard for our hearts to let go because there was too much life played out in these spaces. My realization actually gave me comfort because it reminded me how fortunate I am to have found a new home that I love. Letting my mental allegiance shift from my childhood hometown to my forever hometown has create the room in my life to make a full commitment to the life I am living here in Kansas. To make the most of my new home, I am going to do my best to be present and cherish everyday moments with people that make me feel at home. Take pictures of the special things I want to remember for years to come. And depart your everyday places with a grateful heart because it could be your last visit, and there really is no place like home.

INSIGHT: No place like home

Today is Wednesday, July 14, the 195th day of 2021. There are 170 days left in the year. 

On July 14, 1798, Congress passed the Sedition Act, making it a federal crime to publish false, scandalous or malicious writing about the United States government. 

In 1789, in an event symbolizing the start of the French Revolution, citizens of Paris stormed the Bastille prison and released the seven prisoners inside. 

In 1865, the Matterhorn, straddling Italy and Switzerland, was summited as a seven-member rope party led by British climber Edward Whymper reached the peak. (Four members of the party fell to their deaths during their descent; Whymper and two guides survived.) 

In 1881, outlaw William H. Bonney Jr., alias "Billy the Kid," was shot and killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett in Fort Sumner in present-day New Mexico.

In 1914, scientist Robert H. Goddard received a U.S. patent for a liquid-fueled rocket apparatus. 

In 1933, all German political parties, except the Nazi Party, were outlawed. 

In 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a measure providing funds for a national monument honoring scientist George Washington Carver; the monument was built at Carver's birthplace near Diamond, Missouri.

In 1945, Italy formally declared war on Japan, its former Axis partner during World War II.

(Clemens, who was accused of lying under oath to Congress when he denied ever using performance-enhancing drugs during his career, was acquitted in a retrial.)

Five years ago: Terror struck Bastille Day celebrations in the French Riviera city of Nice as a large truck plowed into a festive crowd, killing 86 people in an attack claimed by Islamic State extremists; the driver was shot dead by police.

One year ago: Researchers reported that the first COVID-19 vaccine tested in the U.S. revved up people's immune systems as scientists had hoped; the vaccine was developed by the National Institutes of Health and Moderna Inc. A Confederate monument that had long been a divisive symbol at the University of Mississippi was removed from a prominent spot on the Oxford campus and taken to a Civil War cemetery in a secluded area. In a primary, former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions lost the Republican nomination for his old Senate seat in Alabama to former college football coach Tommy Tuberville. (Tuberville would go on to defeat Democrat Doug Jones in November.) The federal government carried out its first execution in almost two decades, killing by lethal injection Daniel Lewis Lee, who'd been convicted of murdering an Arkansas family in a 1990s plot to build a whites-only nation in the Pacific Northwest.

Billed as an epic arts party, the 2021 Smoky Hill River Festival was officially introduced today.

Back after more than a year's hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic the 45th Smoky Hill River Festival is scheduled for Sept. 2-5 in Salina's Oakdale Park.

"Festival entertainment comes from the finest in the region, nation, and beyond. A wide variety of musical styles are represented, along with exciting headliner and roving performances ranging from the familiar to the unconventional. Festival-goers can find new favorites at four stages, with a special venue dedicated to hands-on entertainment plus Arty’s Stage for kids and families," according to information from festival organizers.

Admission to the river festival is by weekend wristband ($15 in advance or $20 at the gate) available in 21 cities statewide starting July 26, or by daily wristband ($10 and sold only at the gate). Children ages 11 and under will be admitted at no charge. This year's headliners, who were announced in April, include Salina's own Sunset Sinners, as well as Cowboy Mouth, and the Phantom Blues Band.

Additionally, 18 other acts and entertainers are scheduled for throughout the weekend. Salina Post will highlight those later in the week.

All of that doesn't include Festival Jam, which kicks off the festival each year. According to Rick Hanson, CEO and president of SM Hanson Music, Inc., the organizer of Festival Jam, the final work is being done on this year's lineup, which will be released at a later date.

New to the Smoky Hill River Festival this year is the Riverside area, formerly known as the Bravo Stage and area. Riverside chat will feature Cash Hollistah and Connie Burket, as they interview installation artists, performers, and special guests who reveal insights about their creative practices, according to festival organizers. 

Additionally, "festival-goers of all ages can join the action by performing their music or poetry with Ad Astra’s poetry open mic or jam. Join the Game Show Party’s 'live studio audience' for the excitement of knowledge, skill, and chance. Learn to hula with Martika Daniels or hang out with the Hip-Hop Wagon and join the creation of freestyle hip-hop, drumming, and dancing," festival organizers noted. 

More than 130 artists from 19 states will participate in the festival's Fine Arts &amp; Craft Show, including 56 artists who are new to the festival. 

Organizers also will commemorate the work of longtime festival art show volunteer Marie Chapman, who passed away in June 2018. The first Marie Chapman Award, a $700 cash prize, will be presented during the art show awards at the west side information tent at 2:45 p.m. Sept. 4.

Additionally, children ages 5 to 14 will once again have the opportunity to participate in the selection of the Kids Choice Award, given to the festival artist who receives the most votes by Sept. 4.

The art patron program returns as well with a variety of perks for those who purchase a $100 ticket, including the following.

• A private Fine Art &amp; Craft Show preview reception on Friday morning including a full hour of special shopping access

• An invitation to the exclusive Thursday night premiere cocktail party, during which artists and patrons mingle and connect.

The epic arts party that is Smoky Hill River Festival 2021

The USD 305 Board of Education today approved both annual raises and a retention incentive play plan during its meeting today.

The board approved a 2.27-percent increase to the base salary, along with step movement as allowed under the salary schedules, according to information from USD 305. The average increase for all staff is projected to be 3.77 percent for 2021-22 school year.

“Our staff is our most valuable resource to meet our vision to transform Salina and the world,” said Linn Exline, USD 305 superintendent. “We appreciate what they do day in and day out for our students and families.”

The board of education went on to approve a $1,500 retention incentive pay plan for all staff in regular, ongoing positions. Across the nation, the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted organizations’ employee retention. 

The $1,500 per year retention incentive pay plan, funded by federal ESSER dollars, will encourage staff to continue with USD 305.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that a 2020 GMC Sierra driven by Kolton T. Saulsbury, 32, Texarkana, Texas, was in the southbound passing lane on Interstate 135 in south Salina.

The pickup was changing lanes and rear-ended a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Harry O. Hanan, 52, of Tulsa, Okla., who was in the driving lane.&nbsp;

EMS transported Hanan to Salina Regional Health Center. Saulsbury was not injured. Hanan was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly today created the Governor’s Cybersecurity Task Force to protect Kansas’ digital infrastructure from increasingly sophisticated cyber-attacks.

The bipartisan task force is charged with developing a comprehensive plan to address potential cybercrime, and protect essential services that Kansans and businesses depend on.

“As cyber-attacks become more sophisticated, it’s critical that we prevent disruptions in essential public services,&nbsp;and protect Kansans’ privacy, economic activity, and public safety,”&nbsp;Governor Kelly said.&nbsp;“Through this bipartisan, collaborative effort, with partners from both the private and public sectors, we will develop a plan to protect our digital infrastructure and improve cybersecurity statewide.”

The Task Force’s specific duties are as follows.

Facilitate cross-industry and cross-government collaboration to share best practices and mitigate cybersecurity risks related to critical infrastructure and protected systems;

Identify opportunities to improve the overall cyber security posture across all levels of government within Kansas;
