I have a question about self-banking with whole term life insurance. The way I understand it, you can accrue a cash balance, borrow against it, and then pay interest to yourself. Is this worth it, or should I stay away from it and continue using a bank?

Actually, it’s a whole life policy, not a term policy. And it’s an absolute scam.

Basically, with whole life you pay about 20 times more for the same amount of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/insurance/coverage-checkup" target="_blank">insurance</a>&nbsp;that you would with a term policy. The extra money goes into a savings account, and you earn next to nothing on it, even after you finally start to build it up. One of the ways they’re pitching it now is the self-banking concept, where you can use your own money. It’s nothing magical or anything, because with a regular checking account you&nbsp;use your own money.

My advice is to stay away from the company that’s offering it and anything else they have. It’s a really bad product, and it’s a scummy way to sell&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/insurance/whole-life-insurance" target="_blank">whole life</a>&nbsp;insurance—which is an awful product to begin with. No one, except for folks in that business, believes in it or talks positively about it anymore.

Being able to borrow your own money? Really? Why on earth would anyone want to borrow their own money? It’s ridiculous!&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

My wife and I are Christians, and we own a successful small business in our town. Should businesses tithe?

This is a good question. Giving is never a bad idea unless you do it irresponsibly and to the point of putting your family in financial danger. To the best of my knowledge, the Bible only addresses the topic of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/budgeting/daves-advice-on-tithing-and-giving" target="_blank">tithing</a>&nbsp;by individuals—not businesses.

Personally, I don’t give a tenth of my business gross or net until I receive my paycheck. When that happens—meaning it’s profit that I’m going to pay taxes on, or it’s salaried income out of my business—I tithe on the profits.

So, I can’t really tell you I’ve found Biblical instruction to give a tenth of your business. Hope this helps!

Brian Kemp sued the city of Atlanta over the city's COVID-19 restrictions, including the requirement to wear masks in public; Kemp said local governments couldn't impose measures that were more or less restrictive than statewide executive orders, which didn't require masks. (Kemp dropped the lawsuit in August.) Target, CVS Health and Publix Super Markets joined the growing list of major retailers requiring customers to wear masks. Oakland's City Council authorized $32.7 million in payments to settle lawsuits over a 2016 fire that killed 36 people at an illegally converted warehouse during an electronic music party.

Local, area bodies of water included in blue-green algae advisories

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly today announced that 26 Kansas nonprofit organizations will receive more than $4 million in Community Service Tax Credits (CSP) to improve and enhance fundraising efforts for education, healthcare, childcare, and housing projects.

“The Community Service Tax Credit program is an excellent tool we can use to support our state’s nonprofits and strengthen the essential services they provide to their communities,”&nbsp;Governor Kelly said.&nbsp;“My administration will continue pursuing innovative initiatives like CSP to improve Kansans’ access to quality education, healthcare, childcare, and housing to make Kansas the best state in the nation for families and businesses to call home.”

The CSP program provides a 70% tax credit to qualified donors in rural communities with a population less than 15,000 and a 50% tax credit in larger communities. For example, a donor making a $1,000 gift in a rural community receives a $700 tax credit when they file their state taxes, making the net cost to the donor only $300. CSP is distributing $1 million in awards for childcare and early childhood development projects, specifically for services to those under the age of 5.

CSP is a highly competitive program. Awarded nonprofits were chosen through a competitive, score-based selection process.

This year, 26 of the requested 55 projects (constituting 47% of the total funds requested) received CSP funding.

Rainfall plentiful over part of the area; 1.12-1.90 inches in Salina

A Texas man was arrested after a pursuit through part of north Salina early this morning.

A deputy near the intersection of S. Broadway Boulevard and W. South Street noticed a white 2019 Ford F350 pickup with Texas license plates spinning its wheels, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. After the vehicle headed north, the deputy was able to stop it near the Log Cabin Motel, 440 N. Broadway Boulevard.

The deputy made contact with the driver and detected the odor of alcohol, Soldan said. The deputy ordered the driver to get out of the pickup, but the driver rolled up his window and refused to do so. He then fled the scene, traveling on the following route.

The driver then parked the pickup at a residence in the 200 block of E. Euclid Avenue and took off on foot. He was found a short while later hiding in a carport on the property, Soldan. Open containers of White Claw were found in the pickup, he said.

The driver, identified as James Bryant Daigle, 35, of Magnolia, Texas, was arrested on the following requested charges, Soldan said.

UPDATE: Flash flood watch for Dickinson, Clay counties expires

An ATM was damaged at a local credit union after someone attempted to pull it apart early this morning.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that officers were dispatched to the Great Plains Federal Credit Union branch at 605 S. Ohio, at 4:13 a.m. Thursday for an ATM alarm.

When they arrived they found visible damage to the ATM, Forrester said. Hooks and a yellow tow strap were still attached to the ATM. Additionally, tire tracks heading in a northeasterly direction were visible in the parking lot.

Forrester said it appeared that the ATM was only damaged and that no money was taken.

Officers checking the area located a 2000 Ford F250 parked but still running a few blocks away in the 500 block of S. Delaware Avenue, he said. Part of a yellow tow strap was still attached to the pickup and the ignition had been punched out.

The registered owner of the pickup, James Blackwell, of Blueline Remodeling, 1014 E. Prescott Road, told police the pickup, valued at $4,000, had been parked at the business at 9 p.m. Wednesday. Damage to the pickup was estimated at $1,000.

Forrester said similar attempts to open ATMs have been happening throughout the central United States. Stolen pickups are used to pull the fronts off of ATMs so that the thieves can get to the cash boxes inside, he said.

ATM damaged at Salina credit union after attempted theft

BRIDGEPORT - A rural Saline County residence was damaged by fire Wednesday night.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that Rural Fire District No. 2 personnel and deputies were sent to 11300 S. Old Highway 81 at 10:29 p.m. Wednesday for the report of a house fire. 

Smoke was pouring out of the residence when emergency personnel arrived, however, the fire was contained to the inside of the house, which is located across the highway from Bridgeport in southern Saline County. The house and its contents were valued at $125,000, Soldan said.

The fire was believed to have started in a closest area on the first floor, where an extension cord was attached to a light fixture, he said. The fire spread down the hall and up the stairs before being extinguished.

Those inside were able to safely exit the house, which is owned by Ricky Hutchinson, 58, Soldan said.

Fire damages house across highway from Bridgeport

A motorcyclist was taken to the hospital Wednesday night after a two-vehicle accident in central Salina.

Mercedez Nunez, 18, of Salina, was was westbound on Crawford Street in a 2006 Chevrolet Impala when she failed to yield on a left turn onto S. Santa Fe Avenue and was struck by an eastbound 2005 Kawasaki driven by Samuel Wood, 20, of Salina, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The accident occurred at approximately 10:20 p.m. Wednesday.

Nunez told police that she had waited for an eastbound vehicle to pass and didn't see the motorcycle when she began her turn.

Wood suffered a broken leg and was transported to Salina Regional Health Center, Forrester said.

Nunez was cited for failure to yield on a left turn, he said. She and an 18-year-old female passenger were not injured, Forrester said.

The motorcycle sustained major frontend damage and had to be towed, while the Impala had rear passenger-side damage, but was able to be driven, Forrester said.
