A 38-year-old man faces multiple requested charges after an incident at a south Salina store Thursday.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that an officer was sent to Walmart, 2900 S. Ninth Street, at 11:15 a.m. Thursday for the report of an alleged shoplifter being confrontational with staff.

Walmart loss prevention staff reported that a man, identified as Rickey Thompson, 38, had been seen putting miscellaneous food items and office supplies in a backpack. When he attempted to leave, they confronted Thompson, who allegedly dropped the backpack and began chasing the Walmart personnel, Forrester said. The staff members ran back to the office and attempted to lock themselves in, but Thompson allegedly hit one of them with the door when they entered the office.

When the officer arrived, she located Thompson in the Walmart parking lot and attempted to make contact with him, but he fled, Forrester said. The officer gave chase and caught up with Thompson at the intersection of S. Ninth Street and Debold Avenue. When the officer attempted to arrest him, Thompson pushed her to the ground, Forrester said. Another officer arrived and both officers were able to subdue Thompson and arrest him.

Thompson was arrested on the following requested charges.

The officer who was pushed to the ground was not injured, Forrester said.

Alleged shoplifter arrested on multiple requested charges

ELLSWORTH COUNTY— Authorities continue their investigation of Thursday's&nbsp; natural gas pipeline explosion and fire in an Ellsworth County pasture, according to North Natural Gas spokesperson Johanna Dewald.

The explosion ignited a large fire along Interstate 70 northeast of Ellsworth. Northern Natural shut off the gas to the pipeline and that helped crews extinguish the fire about 3:30 p.m.

Northern Natural is working with local officials to learn what caused the explosion. In addition, the company will do their own investigation and the outcome will take several weeks, according to Dewald.

This is the company's second incident in just over a week. On July 16,&nbsp; Northern Natural crews were doing&nbsp; work at an underground storage facility southeast of Lyons when something happened with a valve that caused a release of natural gas.

The company evacuated residents within a one-mile radius of the area and closed all access to roads until they repaired damage.

Saline County has announced that part of E. Water Well Road will be closed next week for drainage work.

E. Water Well Road between S. Kipp Road and S. Gypsum Valley Road will be closed to through traffic beginning Tuesday for replacement of a cross-road drainage structure. Weather permitting the roadway will be opened by Aug. 10. 

 Motorists are advised to allow a few extra minutes of travel time to reach their destinations.  Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.

Saline County closing part of E. Water Well Road for drainage work

Impact investing generally aims to benefit society, while providing&nbsp;a profit for the investor, by investing in companies, funds and organizations that are aligned with causes, certain values or issues. Courtney Baetz, Downs, received a $1,298 scholarship.• The Wally Beets-John Marino Scholarship is for students who have been employed by the Salina Country Club. Salina Public Library releases its fall calendar

The Saline County Health Department just issued the following statement concerning a COVID-19 spreader event.

At least seven individuals who recently tested positive for COVID-19 were in attendance at Outlaws Bar on the evening of July 10, according to information attained by contact tracers at the Saline County Health Department.

Individuals present at Outlaws on July 10 should monitor themselves for symptoms. If they develop symptoms should get tested for COVID-19.

This is an active outbreak investigation. Additional details including the vaccination status of the individuals, variant sequencing, and the like are not currently available.

Saline County: Mass COVID-19 spreader event at Outlaws

A Kansas man avoided injury after a small plane accident just after noon Thursday in Salina.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1968 Beech Fixed Wing Multi-Engine Aircraft piloted by Joseph P&nbsp;Pinkley, 62, DeSoto,&nbsp; was landing at Salina Regional Airport on a southbound runway. 

The right side landing gear failed causing aircraft to strike the ground on the right side. The aircraft then left the runway&nbsp; spun around coming to rest facing north.

Pinkley was not injured. The accident remains under investigation.

When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

●Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.

●Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.

●Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.

●If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

 ●Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.

A watch means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.

During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

●Signage will be posted at all public access locations.

●Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.

●Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.

●Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.

●Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.

●Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.

Signs of a possible bloom include if there is scum, a paint-like surface or the water is bright green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

Local, area bodies of water included in blue-green algae advisories

The National Weather Service plans to enhance its severe thunderstorm warnings to include a damage threat tag.

According to information release today, three categories of damage threat have been established for severe thunderstorm warnings. They are as follows.

●The criteria for a destructive damage threat is at least 2.75 inch diameter (baseball-sized) hail and/or 80 mph thunderstorm winds. Warnings with this tag will automatically activate a Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) on smartphones within the warned area.

●The criteria for a considerable damage threat is at least 1.75 inch diameter (golf ball-sized) hail and/or 70 mph thunderstorm winds. This will not activate a WEA.

●The criteria for a baseline or “base” severe thunderstorm warning remains unchanged, 1.00 inch (quarter-sized) hail and/or 58 mph thunderstorm winds. This will not activate a WEA. When no damage threat tag is present, damage is expected to be at the base level.

"On average, only 10 percent of all severe thunderstorms reach the destructive category each year nationwide. Most of these storms are damaging wind events such as derechos and some of the larger, more intense thunderstorms, called 'Supercell' storms that can typically produce very large hail in their path. The new destructive thunderstorm category conveys to the public urgent action is needed, a life-threatening event is occurring and may cause substantial damage to property," the National weather service noted on its <a href="http://weather.gov">website</a>.

The damage threat tags are scheduled to begin on Aug. 2.

NWS to include damage threats in severe thunderstorm warnings

ELLSWORTH, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say a natural gas pipeline has exploded in a rural central Kansas cattle pasture, igniting a large plume of fire seen by motorists on nearby Interstate 70 in Ellsworth County. 

No one was injured in Thursday’s explosion about 15 miles northeast of the city of Ellsworth. Emergency manager Keith Haberer says pipeline owner Northern Natural Gas shut off gas to the pipeline to put out the flames.  A grass fire ignited by the explosion also was brought under control.

ELLSWORTH COUNTY—Emergency responders are working a gas line explosion near 23rd Road and Avenue C in Ellsworth County, according to the Ellsworth County Sheriff's office.

They asked the public to avoid the area. Authorities provided few additional details. There are no reports of injury and no threat to the public.

The lineup is set for the 35th SM Hanson Music Festival Jam 2021!

After a year's hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the SM Hanson Music Festival Jam is scheduled to kick off Salina's Smoky Hill River Festival on Sept. 2.

"We lost the Jam in 2020. We anticipate the 2021 SM Hanson Music Festival Jam will be fantastic!" said Rick Hanson, CEO and president of SM Hanson Music, Inc. "This is an event that is unique – for the audience to see and hear 16 bands in a four-hour period, and for the bands to play a quick set (12 minutes) in front of 13,000 people."

More than 13,000 people passed through the gates on the evening of the last SM Hanson Music Festival Jam in 2019.

Hanson explained that each band has only 15 minutes on stage, which includes setup, playing, and exiting the stage.

"We provide the backline equipment to help move the show along. Typically, the band plays 12 minutes of music and uses the remaining time to get on and off of the stage," he said.

SM Hanson Music had 28 submissions from bands by the July 1 deadline, and several others that came in after the deadline and were not considered.

"We look for a variety of bands and music. The bands selected will provide a great evening of entertainment and just like Kansas weather, wait 15 minutes and there will be a change!" Hanson said.

6 p.m. Ephemerus, a five-piece hard rock band from Salina. The band was formed in early 2019. This is the band's inaugural Festival Jam performance.

6:15 p.m. The Get Downs, a six-piece rock/funk band from Salina. These guys have played in other bands and decided at the beginning of the year to create a new band. This is the band's inaugural Festival Jam performance.

6:30 p.m. Don Wagner &amp; Friends, a five-piece band from Salina and Ottawa County. They play country/Americana/Bluegrass. The members have been playing together for years – in various combinations.

6:45 p.m. MotorCo, a four-piece band from north-central Kansas and Nebraska. They play alternative indie rock. This is the band's inaugural Festival Jam performance.

7 p.m. LIX, a three-piece classic rock band from Salina. This band was a local favorite in the 80s and is back together after a couple of decades!

7:15 p.m. Taylor Kline &amp; Co., a four-piece band from Salina. This band plays rock and has performed at the Festival Jam in the past as Herringbone.

7:30 p.m. The Radicles, a four-piece band from Salina. They play rock and originals. This band has played the Smoky Hill River Festival, but this is the band's inaugural Festival Jam performance.

7:45 p.m. Steven W Young, a four-piece band from Washington State and Salina. Original rock. Steve Young worked the stage at the first (and many following) Festival Jams. He moved, but kept local connections and recorded during the COVID-19 lockdown via long distance with local musician Paul Draper.

8 p.m. The Box Turtles, a five-piece band from Council Grove and Manhattan. They play American rock. This is the band's inaugural Festival Jam performance.

8:15 p.m. Hey Radio, a five-piece band from Wichita. They play punk/pop-punk. These guys played at the Festival Jam in 2019 and were great – playing songs from the 90s and 2000s with a catchy throwback style that makes you want to dance.

8:30 p.m. Cash Hollistah, this eight-piece band is from Salina and Junction City. Cash and his crew play hip-hop. The band has been around in various forms for 15 years and last played the Festival Jam in 2018.

8:45 p.m. Paramount, a five-piece band from Salina, Hays, Wichita, and Springfield, Mo. Playing 80s rock, they have been together for 12 years. Always a good crowd pleaser.

9 p.m. Northcutt, five-piece band from Salina. They play country/rock. The band has been active for 15 years and has played in several SM Hanson Music Festival Jams over the years. Very popular.

9:15 p.m. Soul Preachers, a three-piece band from Salina playing classic rock. These guys have played many Festival Jams and return as a crowd favorite.

A Salina man is out $750 after items were stolen from a swather northwest of Salina earlier this week.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that sometime between 10 p.m. Tuesday and noon Wednesday, someone stole 6x8 halogen field lights valued at $250 and a green tool box valued at $500 from a John Deere swather.

The swather, owned by Paul Burger, 65, of Salina, was parked in the 7200 block of W. Watkins Road.

Lights, toolbox stolen from swather northwest of Salina

Police are looking for the person who shot a teenage boy with a pellet or BB gun Tuesday evening.

A 15-year-old Salina boy told police that he was walking in the 900 block of W. Republic Avenue sometime after 7 p.m. but before sunset on Tuesday when a black SUV pulled up and someone inside fired multiple rounds from a pellet or BB gun at the boy, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. 

The boy said he wasn't sure of how many rounds were fired, but three struck him in the right waist area, right leg, and left ankle hard enough to break the skin, Forrester said.

The only description of the vehicle that the boy was able to give was that it was a black SUV with taillights that went all the way to the roof of the vehicle.

The boy reported the incident Wednesday night, Forrester said.

Police are trying to obtain video surveillance from the area, he said.

 </figure>By AAA KANSAS The tragic death of a AAA tow truck driver in Ohio highlights the risks faced by emergency first responders here in Kansas and around the country.More than 80 tow truck drivers participated in a procession in honor of 32-year old Glenn Ewing during his funeral services last week. The AAA tow truck driver was killed on July 4th while placing a disabled vehicle on the back of a flatbed on the side of the road.“When one of our colleagues is lost, we’re all affected,” said Bryan Page, Wichita roadside assistance fleet manager for AAA Kansas. “He died while helping a driver on the side of the road – it can happen to any one of us.”Ewing’s death illustrates why Move Over laws are critical to safety. The best thing drivers can do to keep someone on the side of the road safe is slow down, and move over into the next lane if you can do so safely. “We can’t stress enough how important it is that drivers move over and change lanes when they see AAA or any other first responder working in and around traffic,” said Jerry Stanley, Topeka/Lawrence Roadside Assistance Fleet Manager for AAA Kansas. “By doing so you are also potentially saving someone’s life.”Move Over laws exist in all 50 states. AAA and other traffic safety advocates have been instrumental in the passage of laws to better protect tow truck drivers, road construction workers and other first responders.“First responders work tirelessly to make our roads safer for all of us,” said Kansas Secretary of Transportation Julie Lorenz. “In return, they ask to be afforded a safe place to work in order to perform their job so they may return to their families each day. We encourage everyone to please move over and slow down for these workers and help spread the word. It’s not just the law. It’s the right thing to do.”“Troopers across Kansas have noticed that drivers are not moving over when approaching and passing emergency vehicles and roadway maintenance vehicles,” said Lieutenant Candice Breshears of the Kansas Highway Patrol. “First responders and roadway workers are dedicated to making our Kansas highways safer for everyone traveling in and through Kansas. Not only is it a Kansas law to move over, but it is also the courteous thing to do. We want everyone, including our first responders, to make it home safely to their families. Please do your part and Move Over and Slow Down for all roadway workers.”Distractions behind the wheel As more people hit the roads after confinement and with summer vacation travel, the number of vehicles on the road is increasing and the risks associated with distractions increase. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the national traffic safety research arm of AAA, found that drivers are four times more likely to crash if they are talking on a cell phone while driving and eight times more likely to be in a crash if texting.“Drivers talking on a phone or otherwise distracted may not readily see a vehicle on the side of the road in enough time to safely move over to the next lane,” said Shawn Steward, manager, public and government affairs for AAA Kansas.&nbsp;“In safety, split seconds count.”Kansas’ move over law State law requires drivers approaching a stationary emergency vehicle displaying flashing lights, including towing and recovery vehicles, traveling in the same direction, to vacate the lane closest if safe and possible to do so, or slow to a speed safe for road, weather, and traffic conditions. In Kansas, the original law took effect in 2000 to protect law enforcement officers. It has been expanded over the years to to reduce risk to roadside construction crews, emergency responders and tow operators and waste collection vehicles. It was most recently broadened during the 2021 Kansas Legislative session to include to utility and telecommunications crews.If motorists are cited for violating this statute, they will face a $75 fine plus, potentially, additional court costs.Tragic numbers In Kansas designated road construction work zones alone – not even including incidents involving law enforcement officers, tow truck drivers and other roadside workers – the impact of vehicle crashes has been significant and tragic. According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, from 2010-2019, there were:•15,925 work zone crashes•5,126 injuries in those crashes•65 people killedWhat’s being done Law enforcement agencies across Kansas and the nation regularly enforce Move Over law violations.
