Mahaska and Kansas Wesleyan have joined forces. Mahaska will be the official beverage provider for KWU, and will sponsor both the KWU Exemplary Teacher Award and scholarship opportunities designed to support Marketing and Business students from north-central Kansas.

“It has been an honor to be a part of the great history of Kansas Wesleyan,” said Alan Michaud, chief of Kansas operations for Mahaska. “Mahaska is proud to continue, and expand, our partnership with such a great, local organization that does so much for our community.”

While Mahaska will receive status as an official partner of Coyote athletics and numerous signage opportunities throughout campus, the academic support means just as much to KWU.

“We are thrilled to partner with Mahaska in a more in-depth way,” said Ken Oliver, vice president for advancement and university operations. “The company has always supported KWU in the past, but in helping honor our faculty and support our students, this takes their support to another level. Hundreds of people turned out on a beautiful Saturday for the Smoky Hill Musuem Street Fair in downtown Salina.

The festivities began with a parade down Santa Fe Avenue. Then it was time for food, fun, and more in and around the Smoky Hill Museum, 211 W. Iron Avenue. In addition to tours of the museum, the street fair included demonstrations, crafts, historic re-enactors, food, caricaturists, rope making, and music.

A red flag warning has been issued for counties in our area.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a red flag warning effective from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday for the following counties in our area.

Extreme grassland fire danger is forecast, with winds from the south at 20 to 25 mph and gusts up to 40 mph. Relative humidity is forecast to be as low as 15 percent.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Disappointment comes in all shapes and sizes. Dealing with disappointment, heartbreak and unexpected transitions is a frustrating but normal part of life. Some heartbreaks are major and life-altering, while some disappointments are just minor irritations. Regardless of their size or scope, disappointments still hurt.&nbsp;But since these letdowns are part of what it means to be human, it would serve us well to learn how to deal with disappointment.&nbsp;

Disappointment is the painful experience of being let down when your expectations don’t play out the way you hoped. It’s when reality doesn’t match your picture of what could have been. Disappointment can produce feelings ranging from mild annoyance to profound heartbreak and confusion—maybe even despair.&nbsp;

Hope, longing, desire, expectation—these all embody our human tendency to visualize the good things we want in life. But just because we desire something doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed to happen—or be as amazing as we thought it’d be.&nbsp;

Disappointment springs from the gap between hope and truth. It springs from unmet expectations. Put another way: Disappointment is when you don’t get what you want or what you think you deserve. Some of our expectations are reasonable, and some are unrealistic. &nbsp;

One of the difficulties in communicating our expectations is&nbsp;that&nbsp;we speak with words, but we think in pictures.&nbsp;Dealing with disappointment is the process of grieving the picture you had in your head, letting it go and deciding to create a new picture. Let’s unpack that process:&nbsp;

Give yourself permission to grieve&nbsp;

Grieve&nbsp;might sound like a dramatic word here, but it’s not. Disappointment is like a small death of something you hoped for.&nbsp;No matter how big or small your disappointment, give yourself permission to grieve what you’ve lost (or never received).

Don’t try to gloss over or numb your unpleasant emotions. Name your feelings. If you’ve been passed over for a big promotion at work, you might chalk it up to feeling depressed or&nbsp;having anxiety, when in reality, you’re angry, hurt and disappointed. These are natural reactions to having your hopes let down. Sit in your grief, but don’t bathe in it. You must accept and process your negative emotions to eventually let them go.&nbsp;

Don’t compare your grief to someone else’s&nbsp;

It’s tempting to try and minimize our grief by comparing it to others who are “worse off” than we are. We end up getting stuck in an endless cycle. I’ve seen this line of thinking all over the place during the COVID pandemic.

The problem with this approach is we deny ourselves the permission to grieve. Minimizing your sadness doesn’t make someone else feel suddenly better.&nbsp;Own your grief, and don’t apologize for feeling sad.

Write down your thoughts and feelings&nbsp;

Our feelings are both important, and often, highly inaccurate. They lie to us. They get jumbled up in our hearts and minds, and make us feel confused and downtrodden. I don’t care how tough or cool you are,&nbsp;write down your feelings&nbsp;and scour each of them for truth.

Seeing your feelings on paper allows them to stop spin-cycling in your head. It takes away some of their power, and provides space between your emotions and your ability to think. &nbsp;

Don’t allow disappointment to become your identity&nbsp;

There’s a lie that can spring out of a disappointing experience, especially if it’s a pattern. You can easily start to believe that&nbsp;you&nbsp;are a disappointment. Let’s say you’ve experienced several long-term relationships ending in awful breakups. It’d be easy to assume the hurt as an identity:&nbsp;I’m a bad person. There must be something wrong with me.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Disappointment is something you&nbsp;experience. It’s not something you&nbsp;are.

Your friends and community are your emergency fund for life. When you’re hurting, you need other people. Talking about disappointment with someone you trust will help you brush it off and move on.&nbsp;

Choose your confidant wisely. This isn’t a gossip session, or an excuse to wallow in anger and negativity. Don’t dump on this person, and don’t drag them down. Process how you’re feeling, and enjoy the company of someone you can trust. &nbsp;

Refuse to throw yourself a pity party&nbsp;

Have you ever ignored leftovers in your fridge for too long? You know what happens, right? Tiny spores find their way into the food, and when the temperature and moisture are just right, mold starts to grow. Eventually, the mold will eat away at all the food.&nbsp; &nbsp;

This is a powerful (and disgusting) metaphor for what happens when you choose to hold on to hurt. Hurt is a petri dish for bitterness. At first, feeling sorry for yourself and obsessively replaying scenes of what happened might seem benign. But before you know it, the bitterness has spread. It infects every part of your life, and spoils the way you see people and circumstances.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Plan something to look forward to&nbsp;

Disappointment is unnerving because it reminds you that you can’t control other people or external situations. The good news is you&nbsp;can&nbsp;control you. Your thoughts and your actions are under your control.

Take action by planning something to look forward to. If your disappointment is&nbsp;causing loneliness,&nbsp;plan a fun evening with your family or your friends. If your disappointment came from a professional letdown, set a time with your leader to talk through the issue and create a plan to grow in your career. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Viktor Frankl said, “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances.”

Whining doesn’t smother the embers of grief. It pours gasoline on them. Joy and optimism are a choice, not a personality type. Lean toward joy and healing, even during pain, but do it slowly. Don’t be fake or deny the difficulty. Take time to laugh alone, with your family or with friends.

Learn from your disappointment&nbsp;

Flaggers, pilot car to be used during upcoming Saline County road work

Three people were arrested Friday southwest of Chapman after multiple law enforcement agencies executed search warrants related to stolen property, burglary, and drug and weapons violations.

On Friday morning, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, and Salina Police Department executed the search warrants at a residence and property located at 2510 Oat Road, Chapman, Dickinson County Sheriff Jerry Davis reported in a news release this evening. Property related to burglary and theft cases in Dickinson and Saline counties, drugs, and a firearm were recovered.

Scott Lambert Leister, 46, of rural Chapman was taken into custody at the location for an outstanding probation violation warrant issued by the Geary County District Court. Additionally, the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office is requesting the following charges against Liester.

●Felony theft greater than 1,500.00, less than $25,000.00 (3 counts)

●Felony Criminal Damage to Property greater than $1,500.00 (1 count)

During the execution of the search warrants, the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office obtained information leading to a second location, 862 1000 Avenue, northwest of Hope. Additional search warrants were executed at that location and Jeramiah L. Snyder, 44, and Sarah B. James, 32, of rural Hope were taken into custody.

The Dickinson County Sheriff's Office is requesting the following charges against Snyder.

●Felony theft – greater than $100,000,

●Possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute,

●Felony possession of drug paraphernalia,

●Misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia,

●Criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

Additionally, the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office is requesting the following charges against James.

●Misdemeanor possession of marijuana, and

●Misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia

Davis said that so far, his office has cleared two burglary cases, four theft cases, and two drug-related cases. The investigation is ongoing, he said.

LINDSBORG - Roy Applequist is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the 20th biennial Business Conference in October.

Presented by the Bethany College Business Department, the conference is scheduled for Oct. 7 on Bethany College campus.

The conference’s primary purpose is to give Bethany students more knowledge about career opportunities by providing dialogue with successful alumni from different business fields, according to information from the college. Although focused primarily on business, the conference is open to all interested Bethany students.

Panel presentations will be given by alumni representing businesses such as accounting, banking and finance, human resources, sales, marketing and customer service, small business and entrepreneurship, insurance and investing. Since the first Business Career Conference in 1983, more than 260 alumni volunteers have readily returned to Bethany to speak about their career paths with students.

At 10 a.m. in the Burnett Center, keynote speaker Roy Applequist will share his business knowledge and experience in manufacturing businesses. The Applequist family has contributed greatly to the Smoky Hill River Valley; first as immigrant homesteaders in 1868 and machinists, toolmakers, and by 1946 manufacturers of mowers and grain handling equipment. 

After graduating from North Park University in Chicago, Applequist returned to the Salina area to join the family manufacturing business, Roberts Industries, until 1976 when it was sold to Federal Mogul Corp, a Fortune 500 company. Applequist then founded Great Plains Manufacturing, headquartered in Salina, to make grain drills for area farmers. With manufacturing plants in eight other central Kansas towns, Great Plains Manufacturing grew into a multi-million dollar international, diversified business with more than 1,400 employees in two manufacturing lines, trucking, and a finance division. In 2016, Great Plains was sold to the Kubota Corporation of Japan. Ever the entrepreneur, in 2018, Applequist started Applequist Manufacturing in Smith Center.

Applequist was inducted into the Kansas Business Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Salina Business Hall of Fame in 2006 and shares his knowledge and experience in service to various boards and organizations.

Applequist scheduled as keynote at Bethany business conference

Over the years, industrial hemp has gotten a bad rap because of its cousin, marijuana. While marijuana is still illegal in many states, including Kansas, industrial hemp is not. 

Production of industrial hemp in Kansas began in 2019, with 2,782 acres planted and 1,831 acres harvested, according to information from the Kansas Department of Agriculture. In 2020, 3,968 acres of industrial hemp were planted, while only 761 acres were harvested. According to reporting by Brian Grimmett for the Kansas News Service, an eighth of the 2020 crop "had to be burned by the state because it contained too much of the psychoactive chemical THC."

This year, only 481 acres were planted, the Kansas Department of Agriculture noted. Harvesting statistics for 2021 are not yet available.

Additionally,&nbsp;in 2019 and 2020, planted acres were predominantly (approximately 90%) for floral/CBD production. In 2021, only 22% of the planted acres in 2021 were for floral/CBD production; grain/fiber was 21%, seed/grain was 40%, fiber was 17%, according to information provided to Salina Post by the Kansas Department of Agriculture.

"Hemp fibers are being used to weave into baskets, make prosthetics as well as sunglass frames and houses. Hemp plastics are a renewable and responsible way to replace oil-based plastics," Peggy DeBey, co-owner of The Flower Nook, told Salina Post.

The Flower Nook recently introduced a line of products made by from industrial hemp. The products, made by Hemp3D, include board games, sunglasses, bottle openers, rolling boards, and jewelry.

According to the Hemp3D website, "Hemp fibers are some of the longest, strongest, and most durable of all natural fibers and possess many desirable mechanical properties including high impact and flexural strength."

DeBey said she learned about industrial hemp and Hemp3D after a product convention by South Bend Industrial Hemp in Great Bend.

"I knew I wanted to introduce this product to the community. I made several calls to the owners of the Hemp3d company, from Steward, Neb., expressing an interest in the product and the creative process involved," DeBey said. "I learned hemp can be transformed in filament to be used for 3D printing. The product is biodegradable, recyclable and free from toxins, plus has a higher impact resistance than regular plastic."

Americans deeply value their First Amendment rights to freely worship and to freely voice their views, but we are deeply divided on how to apply and regulate those freedoms, a&nbsp;<a href="https://survey.freedomforum.org/" target="_blank">newly released survey discloses</a>.

Therein is the 21st century challenge: Balancing long-protected freedoms against shortcuts through the First Amendment in the name of combatting society’s ills or protecting individual beliefs.

<a href="https://survey.freedomforum.org/" target="_blank">“The First Amendment: Where America Stands”</a>&nbsp;is a survey commissioned by the nonpartisan Freedom Forum. The survey sampled a representative group of more than 3,000 Americans on their attitudes and values about the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition.

For those who see these five freedoms as essential to democracy, there are welcome results in the survey: 94% of respondents see the First Amendment as vital and 63% would keep the 45 words of the amendment as adopted in 1791.

But — no surprise in our polarized society — 23% of all those polled would make some changes. A smaller group, 15% of respondents, said our core freedoms go too far.

TESTING PROTECTIONS OF AND LIMITS ON OUR FREEDOMS

The results reflect a time when Americans are much more active in testing both the protections of and limits on our freedoms. We’re engaged in court battles over how broadly religious liberty protects individual choices when those choices run counter to social movements. More of us have taken to the streets in recent years than in decades, but that resurgence has produced a conservative backlash in more than 40 state legislatures that threatens to chill the democratic principles of freely speaking truth to power that Americans prize.

For example, 36% percent of us would add new limits on free speech to battle “hate speech” — raising the deep challenge that what some see as hateful speech may be seen by others as simply the expression of a deeply held view or belief.

Some results may forecast a lessening of support for the five freedoms: 45% of people say they have not expressed an opinion for fear of negative reaction, with younger Americans more likely to say they have self-censored. The survey found 49% never have shared a political opinion on social media. Just three percent say the right of petition — to publicly seek change in government policies or laws — is the First Amendment freedom they value most; 69% of us never have participated in a rally, protest or march.

In an echo of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforuminstitute.org/first-amendment-center/state-of-the-first-amendment/" target="_blank">Freedom Forum surveys since 1997</a>, the new “Where America Stands” found many of us lack fundamental understanding of the First Amendment. About one in five (18%) couldn’t name one freedom in the amendment. Of those who could name at least one: 78% could identify free speech, followed by 49% naming religion, 39% assembly, 34% free press and 14% the right of petition. Just nine percent correctly identified all five.

There were some freedoms that respondents mistakenly thought are in the First Amendment: 18% percent said it protects the right to “bear arms,” which is the Second Amendment. Others said the “right to vote” (17%). Voting is considered the ultimate expression of the right of petition, but it’s not explicitly mentioned in the amendment. MISINFORMATION, PRESS AND SOCIAL MEDIA VALUES VERSUS PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS

Some findings are more in the vein of wishful thinking than practical suggestions — which doesn’t mean we should ignore the sentiments. The survey found that 72% would outlaw political ads that “misrepresent the truth.” In an era of constant battles with misinformation, particularly online, that’s certainly a worthy goal. But the sentiment raises a multitude of conflicting questions: What is “truth?” How can we apply such laws without raising the specter of partisan censorship?

Then there is public opinion regarding a free press. A majority — 58% — see the news media as an essential watchdog on government, one of the core reasons the nation’s founders provided such strong protection for independent journalism — even the highly partisan newspapers and journals of their time.

But only 14% of respondents expressed strong trust in the news media of today, with public broadcasting rated highest. The survey also confirmed widespread polling in recent years that shows a majority of us live in so-called “news bubbles” — just 38% of respondents look to news outlets with different perspectives than their own.

More than two-thirds of those responding to the survey (69%) said social media companies should be responsible for what’s posted on their sites. But that desire raises the likelihood that in holding Twitter, Facebook and others accountable we will prompt much tighter restrictions by those companies on what we are able to post — with some predicting the death of social media as we know it — and the installation of cumbersome government regulations and processes.

More than any other, that social media quandary typifies the survey findings. New technologies and deep political and social divides challenge our traditional shared notions of freedoms. We have heavy debate and momentous decisions ahead.

But the survey shows far too many of us lack basic knowledge about the First Amendment to debate and decide in an informed way.

When it comes to our core freedoms, “ignorance is not bliss,” particularly when combined with fear and lack of engagement that can drive hasty actions and prompt political opportunists.

Ignorance about our rights is dangerous for democracy.

The survey sampled a representative group of more than 3,000 Americans on their attitudes and values about the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition.For those who see these five freedoms as essential to democracy, there are welcome results in the survey: 94% of respondents see the First Amendment as vital and 63% would keep the 45 words of the amendment as adopted in 1791.But — no surprise in our polarized society — 23% of all those polled would make some changes. A smaller group, 15% of respondents, said our core freedoms go too far.<div><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/LU7VAvQOgj0" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></div><h2>TESTING PROTECTIONS OF AND LIMITS ON OUR FREEDOMS</h2>The results reflect a time when Americans are much more active in testing both the protections of and limits on our freedoms. We’re engaged in court battles over how broadly religious liberty protects individual choices when those choices run counter to social movements. More of us have taken to the streets in recent years than in decades, but that resurgence has produced a conservative backlash in more than 40 state legislatures that threatens to chill the democratic principles of freely speaking truth to power that Americans prize.For example, 36% percent of us would add new limits on free speech to battle “hate speech” — raising the deep challenge that what some see as hateful speech may be seen by others as simply the expression of a deeply held view or belief.Some results may forecast a lessening of support for the five freedoms: 45% of people say they have not expressed an opinion for fear of negative reaction, with younger Americans more likely to say they have self-censored. The survey found 49% never have shared a political opinion on social media. Just three percent say the right of petition — to publicly seek change in government policies or laws — is the First Amendment freedom they value most; 69% of us never have participated in a rally, protest or march.In an echo of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforuminstitute.org/first-amendment-center/state-of-the-first-amendment/" target="_blank">Freedom Forum surveys since 1997</a>, the new “Where America Stands” found many of us lack fundamental understanding of the First Amendment. About one in five (18%) couldn’t name one freedom in the amendment. Of those who could name at least one: 78% could identify free speech, followed by 49% naming religion, 39% assembly, 34% free press and 14% the right of petition. Just nine percent correctly identified all five.There were some freedoms that respondents mistakenly thought are in the First Amendment: 18% percent said it protects the right to “bear arms,” which is the Second Amendment. Others said the “right to vote” (17%). Voting is considered the ultimate expression of the right of petition, but it’s not explicitly mentioned in the amendment. Tuesday evening will mark the beginning of a new musical season at Kansas Wesleyan, in more ways than one. 

The Department of Music will open its annual concert schedule with a 7:30 p.m. performance of the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and String Orchestra. &nbsp;

The event will also mark the department’s initial public performance under new chair James McAllister, who took over the leadership role in August. &nbsp;

The next class will be on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. These classes are held at the Home Health and Hospice office, 1111 N. Brady, Abilene. Lindsey Brummer, bereavement coordinator, serves as the group facilitator.

These gatherings are designed to help individuals work through the period of transition, allow time for sharing personal experiences and feelings, and provide guidance toward learning and coping skills.

The public is welcome to attend the free sessions. Persons interested in the support group are encouraged to bring along a supportive person. Pre-registration is not required.

The 200 block of W. Iron Avenue was beginning to look festive Friday as workers prepared for Saturday's Smoky Hill Museum Street Fair.

While the majority of the activities will be in and around the Smoky Hill Musuem, 211 W. Iron Avenue, the event will kick off with a parade down nearby Santa Fe Avenue beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday. The parade is scheduled to begin at N. Elm Street and head south on Santa Fe Avenue to The Temple at S. Santa Fe Avenue and W. South Street.

South Street.Activities will then shift the the area around the museum, where Old West re-enactors will be roaming the street fair throughout the day, in keeping with this year's Old West theme. Other activities will include horseshoe tossing, roping, archery, blacksmithing, free crafts to-go, caricaturists, and Color Me Crazy airbrush tattoos. See the full schedule below.For $2, you can sample chili from six booths and vote for your favorite between noon and 1:30 p.m. The People’s Choice award and best decorated booth winners will be announced at 2 p.m. on the main stage.Additionally, the museum gallery will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. for everyone to enjoy the special exhibit, The Crossroads. In addition, there is the popular hands-on, interactive exhibit, The Curiosity Shop. For safety purposes, free timed-tickets will be handed out that day on the museum landing for entry into the museum, allowing no more than 25 people in every 20 minutes.With the new guidelines from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment about mass gatherings of 500 or more people, museum staff has identified and implemented several changes to minimize risk to attendees without creating a highly restrictive atmosphere, according to information from the museum.
