Two people were injured in a two-vehicle wreck Thursday afternoon.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a 17-year-old Salina girl in a 2012 Honda Accord was backing out of a driveway in the 700 block of W. Ash Street when her car struck an eastbound 2006 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Candice Dorch, 36, of Salina.

The accident occurred at approximately 4:20 p.m. Thursday.

The girl complained of back and neck pain and was assisted by EMS personnel at the scene. A passenger in the Accord, also a 17-year-old female, complained of arm pain and was treated at the scene by EMS, Forrester said.

The Accord sustained rear-end damage and the Pathfinder sustained front-end damage, he said. Both were towed from the scene.

The girl was cited for limits on backing, Forrester said. Dorch was cited for no proof of insurance and driving with a canceled, suspended or revoked license, he said.

Kansas Wesleyan’s&nbsp;Debate&nbsp;and Forensics team competed virtually in two&nbsp;tournaments Oct. 30-31, and secured top finishes in both.&nbsp;

In the Appelquist Speech Tournament hosted by Moraine Valley College, Abby Wray (Wichita) was named the Open IPDA (International Public Debate Association) Champion and also snagged the top speaker honor in Open IPDA.&nbsp;

In the forensics tournament, hosted virtually by California Baptist University, Abril Vazquez-Ortiz, Wray and Elizabeth Schaefer (Lyons) grabbed first-place finishes and the team placed second overall in sweepstakes.&nbsp;

KWU debate and forensics excels at pair of recent tournaments

My husband is a union member and works at a paint factory near our home. His union’s current contract will expire in nine months. We have about $27,000 of debt left to pay off, and he makes a little over $80,000 a year. I’m nervous because his slow season is coming up between now and then. During this time, he usually gets about half the hours — and, of course, less money — than he does during the rest of the year. I’m a little scared, even though there hasn’t been a strike in the last six years. Do you think we should go ahead and pay off our remaining debt or hold onto every penny in case they walk out?

I’m going to tell you something that might just blow your mind: You two can&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/debt-calculator" target="_blank">pay off the debt</a>&nbsp;and have some money set aside to live on in that length of time. NWS: Warmer, mild weekend in store for our area

MANHATTAN – As the number of weeks to Christmas slowly creeps into the single digits, many parents are already getting a pretty good idea of this year’s hottest toys.&nbsp;

A new version of Baby Yoda that eats snacks and features more than 40 sounds and motions. The Nintendo Switch. Or how about a Space Jam "Lebron James" Shoot and Dunk Playset?&nbsp;

Children may be asking for the flashiest and brightest – and by association, often the most expensive – toys this year, but K-State Research and Extension child development specialist Bradford Wiles said those may not always be the best choice for their long-term growth.&nbsp;

“The thing about toys is they are a means for learning,” Wiles said. “As young children, we need to manipulate things and figure out how things work, which are all concepts that many of us take for granted. We need to feel the friction and pliability of toys, be able to bend and even break or lose toys to learn what (disappointment) feels like.&nbsp;

“The idea is that children use toys to further their cognitive development, to understand more about their world through these things that are accessible enough for them to manipulate.”&nbsp;

The hottest toys of the season might help accomplish those developmental goals, Wiles said, but simpler, less expensive options are also good choices.&nbsp;

“One thing I like about the very simple toys is that they encourage imaginative play, whereas when you have the toys with the imaginary components already built in – sirens, jet noises, car noises – what you find is that children aren’t making those noises on their own. They are letting the toy do it,” Wiles said.&nbsp;

“Part of learning and developing our minds is attempting to make these noises, attempting to understand how to mimic noises and learning how our vocal chords work and our mouths work. There comes a point when we start to deprive children of experiences that we know are beneficial because we are over-compensating for that with the gifts we are giving.”&nbsp;

To illustrate his point, Wiles pointed to a simple kitchen toy set, which allows the child to imitate what the adults are doing in the family kitchen. “It’s a way for children to do some observational learning and apply it using a model of something that exists in the real world,” he said.&nbsp;

Regardless of the toy given, Wiles said “there is no substitute for human, facial interaction.”&nbsp;

“If you want toys to help your child meet their potential, play with them,” he said. “Talk about what you’re doing with them; engage with them. Toys, like books, are a means to engagement. For children, you could give them a mouse pad. As long as you’re playing with them with the mouse pad, it’s great.”&nbsp;

 </figure>MANHATTAN – As the number of weeks to Christmas slowly creeps into the single digits, many parents are already getting a pretty good idea of this year’s hottest toys.&nbsp;A new version of Baby Yoda that eats snacks and features more than 40 sounds and motions. The Nintendo Switch. Or how about a Space Jam "Lebron James" Shoot and Dunk Playset?&nbsp;Children may be asking for the flashiest and brightest – and by association, often the most expensive – toys this year, but K-State Research and Extension child development specialist Bradford Wiles said those may not always be the best choice for their long-term growth.&nbsp;“The thing about toys is they are a means for learning,” Wiles said. “As young children, we need to manipulate things and figure out how things work, which are all concepts that many of us take for granted. We need to feel the friction and pliability of toys, be able to bend and even break or lose toys to learn what (disappointment) feels like.&nbsp;“The idea is that children use toys to further their cognitive development, to understand more about their world through these things that are accessible enough for them to manipulate.”&nbsp;The hottest toys of the season might help accomplish those developmental goals, Wiles said, but simpler, less expensive options are also good choices.&nbsp;“One thing I like about the very simple toys is that they encourage imaginative play, whereas when you have the toys with the imaginary components already built in – sirens, jet noises, car noises – what you find is that children aren’t making those noises on their own. They are letting the toy do it,” Wiles said.&nbsp;“Part of learning and developing our minds is attempting to make these noises, attempting to understand how to mimic noises and learning how our vocal chords work and our mouths work. There comes a point when we start to deprive children of experiences that we know are beneficial because we are over-compensating for that with the gifts we are giving.”&nbsp;To illustrate his point, Wiles pointed to a simple kitchen toy set, which allows the child to imitate what the adults are doing in the family kitchen. “It’s a way for children to do some observational learning and apply it using a model of something that exists in the real world,” he said.&nbsp;Regardless of the toy given, Wiles said “there is no substitute for human, facial interaction.”&nbsp;“If you want toys to help your child meet their potential, play with them,” he said. “Talk about what you’re doing with them; engage with them. Toys, like books, are a means to engagement. For children, you could give them a mouse pad. As long as you’re playing with them with the mouse pad, it’s great.”&nbsp;Wiles recently shared tips for buying toys as gifts on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/news/radio-network/sound-living.html" target="_blank">Sound Living</a>, a weekly radio program from K-State Research and Extension. When buying holiday toys, is simpler better?

WICHITA – As we prepare to turn our clocks back an hour at 2 a.m. this Sunday, with the end of Daylight Saving Time, many may rejoice for the extra hour of sleep. However, AAA Kansas is reminding drivers to prepare for potential challenges, such as changes in sleep patterns that may increase chances of drowsy driving, and shorter days that mean driving&nbsp;home in the dark.



Sleep-deprived drivers cause more than 6,400 deaths and 50,000 debilitating injuries on American roadways each year, according to the National Sleep Foundation (<a href="http://aaacluballiance.pr-optout.com/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d9%2b%3a6%3c1-%3eLCE59.%3c5%3a%26SDG%3c90%3a.&amp;RE=MC&amp;RI=5430239&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=482948&amp;Action=Follow+Link" target="_blank">NSF</a>).

“While many will enjoy an extra hour of sleep this weekend, few commuters and motorists realize the added dangers that can come as the result of a time change – especially when they are behind the wheel,” said Shawn Steward, AAA Kansas spokesman. “Although we gain an hour of sleep, our sleep patterns are disrupted. This can result in unsafe drowsy driving episodes.”

Previous research by the AAA Foundation estimates that drowsy driving is a factor in an average of 328,000 crashes annually, including 109,000 crashes that result in injuries and 6,400 fatal crashes.

“The end of Daylight Saving time this weekend will bring shorter days and longer nights,” noted Steward. “Night driving brings challenges, so we urge motorists to slow down, increase their following distance, use headlights to make yourself more visible, and be extra cautious on our roadways.”

●Turn on your headlights to become more visible during early morning and evening hours.

●Keep vehicle headlights and windows (inside and out) clean.

●Do not use high beams when other cars or pedestrians are around.

●Yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks and do not pass vehicles stopped at crosswalks.

AAA Kansas tips for pedestrians and bicyclists

●Cross only at intersections.&nbsp; Look left, right and left again and only cross when it is clear. Do not jaywalk.

●Cross at the corner - not in the middle of the street or between parked cars.

●Avoid walking in traffic where there are no sidewalks or crosswalks. If you have to walk on a road that does not have sidewalks, walk facing traffic.

●Evaluate the distance and speed of oncoming traffic before you step out into the street.

●Wear bright colors or reflective clothing if you are walking or biking near traffic at night. Carry a flashlight when walking in the dark.

●Avoid listening to music or make sure it is at a low volume so you can hear danger approaching.

●Bicycle lights are a ‘must have’ item for safe night riding, especially during the winter months when it gets dark earlier.

AAA: End of Daylight Saving Time means increased driving danger

With a hat tip to community and family, the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank has created a cookbook filled with love and many recipes.

Pass the Plate: A Taste of Salina is available for purchase from the food bank for $18. To place an order, call the food bank at 785-827-7111 or email <a href="mailto:salinafood.cookbook@outlook.com">salinafood.cookbook@outlook.com</a>.

For 50 years, the food bank has assisted thousands of families who have needed additional food support. Funds raised through cookbook sales will go toward assisting Saline County residents in need.

"Here in Kansas, family dinners are still a tradition. Grandparents share homemade recipes that have been passed down through the generations, and folks reminisce about that one dish that brought everyone together around the table. This Taste of Salina cookbook was created with love by the staff, board members, volunteers, friends, and neighbors of the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank, all of whom share a love for food and a passion for community," a part of the forward to the cookbook reads.

Karen Couch, food bank executive director, told Salina Post that the organization began soliciting recipes in February by putting notices in a variety of locations, including church bulletins and on Facebook. 

"We had over 200 recipes submitted from 90 friends and neighbors," Couch said.

People could submit as many recipes as they wished.

The cookbook is in a hard-sided three-ring binder that includes 107 pages of recipes. The sections of the cookbook include Appetizers &amp; Beverages, Soups &amp; Salads, Vegetables &amp; Sides, Main Dishes, Breads/Rolls, Desserts, Breakfast, and Miscellaneous.

"Scattered throughout the cookbook are handy cooking and meal prep guides, as well as tidbits of information about the Food Bank," Couch added.

Food bank collects recipes, creates fundraiser cookbook

A Kansas woman&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-f5452aa069fdeb578443f5947418d794">who used a 134-year-old state law to convene a citizen grand jury</a>&nbsp;after a prosecutor declined to file rape charges against a man she accused of attacking her said Wednesday she was angry but not surprised that jurors didn’t bring charges in the case.

Madison Smith, 23, of McPherson, gathered hundreds of signatures to empanel the grand jury after she said a fellow student at Bethany College slapped and strangled her during a sexual encounter in his dorm room in February 2018. The student, Jared Stolzenburg, was sentenced to two years of probation after pleading guilty to aggravated battery.

The grand jury convened on Oct. 18 and Smith was told of its decision Tuesday.

Smith said the grand jury’s refusal to bring rape charges reinforces society’s reluctance to deal honestly and fairly with sexual assault victims.

“I was very angry that people just don’t see rape for what it is and refuse to be educated about it,” Smith said. “I was also angry that I had to take so many steps that victims should not have to take and it still didn’t work out as we wanted it to.”

Defense attorney Brent Boyer said Wednesday he had not represented Stolzenburg for some time and declined to comment on the grand jury’s decision.

Kansas is one of six states that allow citizens to petition for grand juries, using a law that was passed in 1887. Smith’s case is believed to be the first time the law was used by someone claiming sexual assault.

Smith said her encounter with Stolzenburg was consensual until he started slapping and strangling her to the point where she began to lose consciousness and she feared he was going to kill her. She said she couldn’t verbally withdraw consent because she was being choked.

When McPherson County Attorney Gregory Benefiel declined to file rape charges, Smith used the Kansas law to call her own grand jury. She stood on street corners and told her story to strangers in order to gather hundreds of signatures on petitions. And she did it twice after the first petition was declined because of technicality.

Despite the grand jury’s decision, Smith said she does not regret publicizing her case and hopes it will bring changes to how sexual assault victims are treated by law enforcement officials and society in general.

“I’m just sick and tired of people being all hush-hush about rape,” she said. “I wanted to bring awareness not only to my case but to the fact that victims of rape and sexual assault do not get justice or the treatment they should.”

Benefiel did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the grand jury’s decision. In an interview in May, he said sex crimes are “extremely challenging to prosecute” because jurors are looking “for that CSI type of evidence.”

He said he believed he and Smith were both seeking “truth and justice” but had different ideas on what that would be in this case.

Smith’s mother, Mandy, who works at Bethany College in Lindsborg, said she was proud of her daughter’s determination to stand up for herself and shine a light on how poorly sexual assault victims are treated by the legal system.

“She was not treated with any empathy or dignity,” Mandy Smith said. “Prosecutors do not understand how to do their jobs in a trauma-informed way and that is a huge part of the problem in these cases … This case should help get consent education out there. It should be everywhere and it’s not.”

Justin Boardman, a retired detective who trains police and prosecutors on investigating sexual crimes, said law enforcement officers and prosecutors often are “speaking a different language” than sexual assault victims, largely because of cultural biases about such crimes.

He said law enforcement officers and the public often question why a victim didn’t scream, or fight back, or why victims sometimes struggle to tell their stories or don’t cry. All those responses are related to how the brain reacts to trauma, he said, and there is “a huge gap in miscommunication” between victims and law enforcement.

Madison Smith, who graduated in May and is working as a medical assistant while applying to nursing schools, said she was encouraged by the support she received from family, friends and strangers during the process.

“We swung the bat as hard as we could and unfortunately we missed,” she said. “I just had to know that I tried everything I could.”

In an interview in May, he said sex crimes are “extremely challenging to prosecute” because jurors are looking “for that CSI type of evidence.”He said he believed he and Smith were both seeking “truth and justice” but had different ideas on what that would be in this case.Smith’s mother, Mandy, who works at Bethany College in Lindsborg, said she was proud of her daughter’s determination to stand up for herself and shine a light on how poorly sexual assault victims are treated by the legal system.“She was not treated with any empathy or dignity,” Mandy Smith said. “Prosecutors do not understand how to do their jobs in a trauma-informed way and that is a huge part of the problem in these cases … This case should help get consent education out there. It should be everywhere and it’s not.”Justin Boardman, a retired detective who trains police and prosecutors on investigating sexual crimes, said law enforcement officers and prosecutors often are “speaking a different language” than sexual assault victims, largely because of cultural biases about such crimes.He said law enforcement officers and the public often question why a victim didn’t scream, or fight back, or why victims sometimes struggle to tell their stories or don’t cry. All those responses are related to how the brain reacts to trauma, he said, and there is “a huge gap in miscommunication” between victims and law enforcement.Madison Smith, who graduated in May and is working as a medical assistant while applying to nursing schools, said she was encouraged by the support she received from family, friends and strangers during the process.“We swung the bat as hard as we could and unfortunately we missed,” she said. “I just had to know that I tried everything I could.”

Police are investigating vandalism at the Magnolia Soccer Complex in south Salina.

Sometime Wednesday morning, someone&nbsp;vandalized the men's restroom at the Magnolia Soccer Complex, 2100 E. Magnolia Road, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

Two soap dispensers were pull from the wall, as were three toilet paper dispensers. Total damage was estimated at just under $500, he said.

Restroom at south Salina soccer complex vandalized

A Nebraska man was transported to the hospital after the SUV he was driving struck the back of a tractor-trailer rig hauling metal just north of the Interstate 135/Interstate 70 interchange early this morning.

Jeffery Wolfe, 37, of Stanton, Neb., was northbound in the left-hand lane of I-135 in a 2004 Lincoln Aviator when the SUV drifted into the right-hand lane and struck the back left corner of the tractor-trailer rig that was merging from I-70 onto I-135/U.S. Highway 81, Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Michael Ascher said this morning. 

The rig was being driven by David Mitchell, 51, of Wyoming.

There was no evidence of braking or skid marks prior to impact, Ascher said. The accident occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

Ascher said the crash caved in the passenger side of the SUV. 

Wolfe, who had to be extracated from the SUV, suffered a possible broken bone and other minor injuries, and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, Ascher said. Mitchell was not injured. 

Additionally, a yellow Labrador, who was in the back seat of the SUV, was not injured, Ascher said.

The Salvation Army in Salina has announced that Angel Trees will again be placed at Walmart and Sams Club for this Christmas season. 

 People wishing to help may select an angel from the tree and purchase new clothing or a gift card for a child in need.  Gifts may be returned to the provided bins at each location or to The Salvation Army 1137 N. Santa Fe Avenue. 

 Angels will be available beginning Nov. 29.

TOPEKA – Humanities Kansas recently awarded a SHARP Recovery Grant in the amount of $8,807, to the Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum.

SHARP Recovery Grants support Kansas cultural organizations that provide humanities programming and have faced financial hardship due to the coronavirus pandemic of 2020-'21. Grants may be used for general operating support, staff retention, and needed digital and/or operational transitions for cultural work in the post-pandemic era.

"Humanities Kansas is honored to support Kansas cultural organizations as we recover from the impact of COVID," said Julie Mulvihill, Humanities Kansas executive director. "Kansas cultural organizations provide important social connections and contribute to the economic well-being and strength of each of our communities."

 Museum Executive Director Kay Quinn added, "This funding was greatly appreciated, as our newly privatized museum works to gain momentum in programming, guest attendance and how we serve our communities of the Smoky Valley."

Additionally, Humanities Kansas recently awarded the second half of a $10,000 grant to the museum, in support of its newer Not The Same Old Grind exhibit that opened in August. The exhibit highlights the flour-milling industry of McPherson County and Lindsborg, focusing on construction of the brick Old Mill in 1898, the impact of farming and flour-milling over time, and the value of having one of the few fully restored and operational roller mills in the U.S., to support local education and regional heritage tourism.

Among the activities done by staff and community leaders to complete the exhibit grant was the late-August launch of the signature Old Mill Lunchbox Cookie, in partnership with Carla Wilson and 350 Degrees Bakery. The cookie will be relaunched for the holiday season on Nov. 12, and will be available only at 350 Degree through Dec. 11.

Funds for the SHARP Recovery Grants were made available through the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to assist cultural institutions affected by the coronavirus, as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARP) approved by the U.S. Congress and the President. Humanities Kansas awarded 121 SHARP grants statewide.
