The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a wind advisory in effect from 3 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday for the following counties in our area.

North winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a winter weather advisory in effect from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Saturday for the following counties in our area.

Snow is expected, with total accumulations of up to two inches. Additionally, winds gusting as high as 45 mph are forecast.

Plan on slippery road conditions. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. Windchills in the single digits are likely.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a winter weather advisory in effect from 6 p.m. Friday to noon on Saturday for the following counties in our area.

Mixed precipitation expected, with total snow accumulations of up to two inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze. Winds are forecast to gust as high as 45 mph.

UPDATE: NWS issues winter weather advisories for counties in our area

Police are investigating as arson a fire that destroyed the interior of a Hummer H3 in north Salina early Thursday morning.

Officers and Salina Fire Department personnel were dispatched to the 200 block of N. Second Street at approximately 3:20 a.m. Thursday for the report of a vehicle fire, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning.

A witness who went outside to investigate a car alarm going off discovered a black Hummer H3 on fire. According to Forrester, the fire originated at the rear of the vehicle and destroyed the interior of the Hummer.

The owner of the vehicle, Michael Larson, 56, of Salina, had recently purchased the vehicle. Police were not able to contact Larson, Forrester reported.

Fire that destroyed inside of Hummer called arson

Police are looking for an $18,000 tractor that was stolen from a central Salina residence earlier this week.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning that sometime between 3 p.m. Wednesday and 1:50 p.m. Thursday, someone stole a 2003 Farmtrack DTC 360 tractor from the driveway of a residence in the 100 block of E. Kirwin Avenue. 

Duane Koelling, 73, of Lindsborg, had loaned the tractor to a friend to help with cleanup at a residence in the 100 block of E. Kirwin Avenue. When the friend, who had the key to the tractor, showed up to do some work on Thursday afternoon, the tractor was gone.

According to Forrester, the tractor was valued at $18,000 and a loader connection that also was stolen was valued at $500.

Tractor stolen from central Salina residence

Police are investigating an incident of a stolen pickup that earlier in the morning on the day the theft was reported, was found abandoned near the scene of three hit-and-run crashes.

A 36-year-old Salina woman reported that her 2005 Ford F150 was stolen from the 100 block of N. Columbia Avenue sometime between 9 p.m. Wednesday and 7:50 a.m. Thursday, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. The woman told police that the keys were missing, but she was unsure whether she had left them in the pickup.

According to Forrester, the pickup was found abandoned at approximately 12:15 a.m. Thursday in the middle of the street at the intersection of N. Columbia Avenue and Johnstown Avenue. The pickup had been involved in a crash and was missing the right front tire.

Officers located three parked vehicles in the 600 block of E. Ash Street that had been struck. Officers were able to connect the abandoned pickup to the three vehicles because of a trail from the crash scene to the area where the pickup was located, Forrester noted.

A 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup had rear end damage, a 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer had rear end damage, and a 2017 Hyundai Sonata had rear end damage caused by the pickup traveling eastbound on E. Ash Street and striking the three vehicles, Forrester reported.

Officers working the accident were unable to make contact with the owner of the abandoned pickup after the collisions.

Forrester noted that the investigation in this case is ongoing.

On arrival, officers found that a home and vehicles had been impacted by bullets. No one was injured by the gunfire. 

The estimated loss value for all damage is approximately $3,700.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday brings with it governmental closings.

City of Salina and Saline County offices and facilities will be closed on Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, with the following exception.

The Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill will be open its regular hours on Monday: 7 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Additionally, City of Salina Monday sanitation customers will have their waste collected as normal.

All closed offices and facilities will resume their regular hours on Tuesday.

Additionally, the Salina Public Library will be closed Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day closings announced

LINDSBORG - Nearly 257 Bethany College students have earned semester honors for their academic performance during the fall 2021 semester and have been named to the Honor Roll.

To qualify for the academic honor, students must be enrolled full-time and earn a semester grade point average of 3.5 and above. 95 students earned a GPA of 4.0.

MANHATTAN – A program that helps to develop leaders for agriculture, business and rural communities is now accepting applications for its newest class, which will be announced this summer.&nbsp;

<a href="https://karlprogram.com/" target="_blank">Kansas Agriculture and Rural Leadership</a>&nbsp;is an intensive two-year program designed for those engaged with agriculture and rural Kansas. Program officials said&nbsp;<a href="https://karlprogram.formstack.com/forms/karl_applicant_profile_form_class_xvi" target="_blank">applications will be accepted through April 1</a>, and KARL Class XVI will be announced in June.&nbsp;

“Agriculture and rural Kansas constantly face new and unique challenges, and there is a need for individuals who have leadership skills to serve in decision-making positions,” said KARL president Jill Zimmerman.&nbsp;

“Graduates of the program become part of a network and have gone on to serve in legislative bodies, farm and commodity organizations, agribusiness, community entities and their local communities, which is vital for the future of Kansas. Participants engage in a series of seminars throughout the state, domestic and international study tours, Washington, D.C., Gettysburg (Pennsylvania).”&nbsp;

Zimmerman said KARL invests more than 400 hours of intensive training per person in seminars, speakers and domestic and international study tours over two years.&nbsp;

KARL got its start in 1989 when a group of individuals representing various segments of Kansas agriculture met to discuss the need and potential for an extensive educational program designed to build a leadership base for the state’s agriculture and related industries. The first class of 30 participants began leadership development training in 1991. Since then, more than 440 participants have completed the program. &nbsp;

From the field of applicants, a list of finalists will be interviewed by a selection committee in May and the class roster will be announced in June. Zimmerman said upon completing the program, class members will demonstrate leadership potential and willingness to serve in decision-making roles.&nbsp;

The KARL program is a member of the International Association of Programs for Agricultural Leaders (IAPAL), represented in 40 states and multiple countries. The Kansas Geological Survey reported this afternoon that a 2.3 magnitude quake struck southwest of Gypsum at 9:33 a.m. Wednesday. The quake was centered between S. Cunningham Road and S. Woodward Road on the east and west and E. Hedberg Road and E. Assaria Road on the north and south.

Sacred Heart announces first semester honor roll

TOPEKA — Thirty-two first-year educators from Kansas are being recognized for their outstanding teaching skills through the 2022 Kansas Horizon Award program.

Among them are educators from McPherson USD 418 and Smoky Valley USD 400.

The 2022 Kansas Horizon Award recipients were recently announced by the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE).

The Kansas Horizon Award program, sponsored by KSDE, gives all school districts in the state an opportunity to nominate one elementary and one secondary teacher for the award. To be eligible for the award, teachers must have successfully completed their first year of teaching and have performed in such a way as to distinguish themselves as outstanding.

The program is a regional competition with four regions corresponding to the state’s U.S. congressional districts. Four elementary and four secondary classroom teachers may be selected for the award from each region.

Recipients of the 2022 Kansas Horizon Award were notified of their selection by Kansas Commissioner of Education Dr. Randy Watson.

“Each of these recipients has demonstrated their dedication to the teaching profession, and we are extremely fortunate to have them in our Kansas classrooms,” Watson said. “Outstanding educators like these help us move closer to our vision of leading the world in the success of each student.”

The City of Salina issued the following statement in regard to the incoming winter storm that may affect the Salina area Friday night into Saturday.

With weather forecasts expecting rain and the possibility of snow late Friday evening (January 14) and into Saturday (January 15), the City of Salina is making preparations to pre-treat roadways with salt and Magnesium Chloride brine (MgCl2), treat initial accumulations of snow with salt and MgCl2, and if necessary plow roadways.

Salt spreaders will be loaded Friday and ready to treat roadways either late Friday evening or on Saturday as roadway conditions merit. Crews are divided into day and night shifts to allow continuous 24-hour operations.

The general rule is when snow accumulates or begins windrowing between lanes to a depth of 1” to 1.5” on arterials and collector streets and temperatures are expected to remain below freezing for the next 12-hour period, minimally the following streets will be plowed:

If snow accumulations are greater than 1.5” in depth, all arterial and collector streets will be plowed. If accumulations exceed 2” in depth, snow will be plowed in residential areas once arterial and collector streets have been plowed.

The public is asked to minimize travel during snow storms as much as possible. If travel is necessary, please be sure to clear your vehicle’s windshield and windows to improve visibility and your roof to reduce the amount of blowing snow for other motorists. Please allow extra stopping distance at intersections or between vehicles on the roadway.

The public is asked to also allow ample space when approaching snow removal equipment from behind, as the equipment will be distributing salt, which may cause limited visibility as snow is being removed from the roadway. Driving too closely to snow removal equipment could also present additional challenges and safety concerns for operators and other motorists.

City of Salina issues statement regarding upcoming potential storm

A teen boy with an active warrant was arrested after leading police on a high-speed chase through parts of central and southeast Salina early this morning.

At approximately 12:25 a.m. Thursday, an officer attempted to stop a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire in the 700 block of S. Fourth Street after the vehicle made an improper turn in the 1000 block of E. Crawford Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning.

The vehicle accelerated southbound on S. Fourth Street and a pursuit began. The pursuit moved into the southeast portion of Salina with speeds reaching up to 80 mph, Forrester noted. The pursuit ended when the vehicle was abandoned in the backyard of 2210 Michael Circle.

The driver, a 17-year-old Salina boy, fled on foot, but was later found hiding in an egress window at 2215 River Trail Road and was taken into custody.

According to Forrester, the boy had an outstanding felony probation violation warrant out of Saline County and a suspended driver’s license.

A 14-year-old girl from Salina also was in the car.

The boy was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester reported.

Multiple shots damage house, two vehicles in east Salina

OCCK, Inc. Transportation, including Salina CityGo, 81 Connection, Regional Paratransit, GoAbilene, and GoConcordia public transportation, will have reduced hours on Monday, Martin Luther King, Jr., Day.

On Monday, CityGo buses will run from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. with no peak routes running, OCCK Transportation noted in a news release.&nbsp;

Regional paratransit vehicles, including GoAbilene and GoConcordia, will run only essential trips.

81 Connection will run its normal schedule.

Transportation services will resume normal operating hours on Tuesday, according to information from OCCK Transportation.

OCCK Transportation to run reduced hours on Monday

Dave Fancher, ’64, has spent decades helping build the KWU sciences, from his time as a faculty member to, more recently, putting together the Gang of Eight, a group of graduates that has made significant contributions toward on-campus lab renovations. 

KWU announced this week that Fancher has made another contribution, this one monetary, as he recently gifted $250,000 in support of the sciences at KWU.&nbsp;

“When I interviewed for a faculty position at KWU, Paul Renich told me he didn’t want me if I was only coming to teach,” said Fancher. “He told me he was looking for someone who could help make KWU great. That challenge appealed to me then, and it still appeals to me now. I hope this donation will help attract and retain high quality students who will do great things in the sciences, and later provide great alumni support.”

Fancher’s donation will primarily support departmental scholarships. It boosts the total raised in KWU’s Power of AND campaign to nearly $20 million.

“Dave Fancher has been a significant face in the development of Kansas Wesleyan,” said Ken Oliver, vice president of advancement and university operations. “He has not only personally supported KWU through the years, but has made it a priority to bring together graduates from across the country, and to garner their support as well. His efforts have been critical in helping us advance the sciences at Kansas Wesleyan, and we are truly grateful.”
