CLAY COUNTY —Two people died in an accident just after 5:30p.m. Sunday in Clay County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Chevy Malibu driven by&nbsp; Deanna L.&nbsp; Hess, 56, Clay Center, was southbound on Kansas 15 just south of 2nd Road.

The Malibu crossed the center line and struck the driver's side of a 2016 Chevy Impala driven by&nbsp; Lisa L. Stevenson, 53, Salina.&nbsp;

Hess and Stevenson were pronounced dead at the scene and were transported to Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home.&nbsp; EMS transported a passenger in the Impala identified as 13-year-old Ravean&nbsp;Stevenson to Salina Regional Health Center. The teen was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Salina woman among 2 dead in 2-vehicle crash

SALINE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 11:30p.m. Sunday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Chevy Impala driven by&nbsp; Kennedy L.&nbsp; Finkbiner, 18, Salina,&nbsp;was northbound in the left lane of Interstate 135 one mile north of the Crawford Exit.

The car rear-ended a 1998 Kenworth power unit driven by&nbsp;David J. Barnes, 46, Salina,&nbsp; who traveling at a low rate of speed through the area that a previous crash had occurred and emergency crews were still on scene.&nbsp;

EMS transported Finkbiner to Salina Regional Health Center. Barnes was not transported for treatment. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Salina teen hospitalized after rear-end crash

EMS transported Walsh to Salina Regional Health Center. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Lindsborg Saint Lucia Festival is Saturday

On the morning of his federal trial this week for raping and terrorizing vulnerable Black women in the Kansas City, Kansas neighborhoods he patrolled for 35 years, ex-cop Roger Golubski&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/02/us/kansas-detective-roger-golubski-dead.html?unlocked_article_code=1.eU4.IynZ.E1v2SUhHPHiE&amp;smid=url-share">fatally shot himself</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;His&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kcur.org/overlooked">story</a>, much like last year’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.npr.org/2024/08/13/nx-s1-5073947/kansas-marion-county-record-newspaper-raid-police-chief-charged">Marion police newsroom raid</a>, is another national black eye for law enforcement in Kansas abusing the public’s trust.

In 1829, Sir Robert Peel coined the phrase “policing by consent” with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/policing-by-consent/definition-of-policing-by-consent">nine principles</a>&nbsp;for democratic policing while establishing London’s first police force. In a nutshell, we consent to the idea of trusting some members of the community to exercise powers required to keep the peace on behalf of the community. In return, we willingly pledge our cooperation. Police do not serve the state like an occupying army. They serve the people.

This philosophy is foundational in most American police academies. At its core are accountability, transparency, and social ties. When these break, we break.&nbsp;Years of racial disparities for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.law.umich.edu/special/exoneration/Pages/graphs.aspx">wrongful convictions</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.sentencingproject.org/reports/one-in-five-ending-racial-inequity-in-incarceration/">incarcerations</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/696355#:~:text=In%20the%20century%20since%20the,2015;%20Reppetto%2C%202012).">excessive force</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/1123070/police-shootings-rate-ethnicity-us/">lethal&nbsp;</a><a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/1123070/police-shootings-rate-ethnicity-us/" target="_blank">shootings&nbsp;</a>culminated&nbsp;in the fateful spring of 2020 when George Floyd became a tragic household name. Anti-police riots spawned a “back the blue” counter-movement.&nbsp;

People on both sides did not consent to what they were seeing.

As a result, many bipartisan reforms took place from DC to statehouses and city halls to regain the consent of the public – bans on neck restraints and no-knock warrants, body-cam proliferation,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/senate-bill/4003">de-escalation training</a>, critical response teams with mental health professionals,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.akronohio.gov/government/boards_and_commissions/citizens_police_oversight_board.php">civilian oversight boards</a>, and ramped-up community policing.&nbsp;

None of these have necessarily proven to be blanket panaceas. Amidst local success stories,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/interactive/2022/fatal-police-shootings-unreported/?itid=lk_inline_enhanced-template">fatal police shootings</a>&nbsp;have risen along with&nbsp;<a href="https://mappingpoliceviolence.org/?utm_campaign=launch&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=ad&amp;utm_term=mapping%20police%20violence&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gbraid=0AAAAAoiCFvckTQymuYnbmzZFMlEI3YElA&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiA0rW6BhAcEiwAQH28Ik5TnM_C-tX1_YaXZGpGDGqPLEubcB34Uev_gPl1wxtIGpghE-5nTRoCIMAQAvD_BwE">police killings</a>.&nbsp;<a href="https://publichealth.jhu.edu/2024/study-of-fatal-and-nonfatal-shootings-by-police-reveals-racial-disparities-dispatch-risks">Better data</a>&nbsp;on police incidents are shared but lack enough standardization to drive dependable policymaking.

Meanwhile, another proven reform – women in policing – careens into politically charged climates because of DEI implications and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/military-women-defense-hegseth-combat-916d50a7b465ccfea1aeb13bb91064b3">questioning women in combat</a>.

Part of the debate revolves around the national&nbsp;<a href="https://30x30initiative.org/">30X30</a>&nbsp;initiative. 30X30 has sparked awareness on the benefits of women in policing with a goal of increasing representation from 20% to 30% for recruits by 2030. Wichita, Overland Park, and Salina have joined over 200 localities in taking this pledge. However, Topeka’s incoming police chief recently endorsed 30X30 amidst&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cjonline.com/story/news/local/2024/11/14/topeka-police-chief-finalist-wants-more-female-officers-gop-objects/76220824007/">GOP pushback on quotas for women</a>.

Given policing’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.theiacp.org/sites/default/files/239416_IACP_RecruitmentBR_HR_0.pdf">staffing crisis</a>, local leaders would be remiss not to make a bigger play for half of the state’s population. After 2020,&nbsp;<a href="https://klcjournal.com/wichitas-police-shortage/">Wichita</a>&nbsp;was 14% below authorized full-strength,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cjonline.com/story/news/local/2022/10/18/police-chief-union-disagree-on-whether-topeka-police-staffing-crisis/69569929007/">Topeka</a>&nbsp;13%, and&nbsp;<a href="https://johnsoncountypost.com/2022/03/15/police-vacancies-142647/">Overland Park</a>&nbsp;11%. Also,&nbsp;<a href="https://30x30initiative.org/what-works/">research</a>&nbsp;shows women police are less apt to use excessive force, perceived as more honest and compassionate, named in fewer complaints/lawsuits and hold strong&nbsp;<a href="https://www.governing.com/magazine/a-nationwide-effort-to-put-more-women-on-the-force">communication skills</a>&nbsp;- an advantage for a job considered&nbsp;<a href="https://www.governing.com/magazine/a-nationwide-effort-to-put-more-women-on-the-force">90 percent social work</a>&nbsp;today.

Nationally, 14% of sworn officers are female. Kansas is only 12% with&nbsp;<a href="https://policedata.org/report/ks">use of force incidents climbing</a>. Two jurisdictions with falling use of force incidents include Junction City and Leavenworth. Curiously, they have two of the highest female officer rates at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas.gov/kbi/stats/stats_law.shtml">27%</a>&nbsp;after hitting single digits in 2003. By contrast, the Kansas Highway Patrol added just three female officers since 2003 and currently sit at 6%.

Moving towards a 30% female recruit goal aligns with a representative bureaucracy ideal where credibility, fairness, trust, and performance are heightened as civil servant composition reflects the population composition they serve.&nbsp;

Will our consent be more about climbing 5-foot walls or breaking glass walls?

For the police are us. And we are the police.&nbsp;

Wichita, Overland Park, and Salina have joined over 200 localities in taking this pledge. However, Topeka’s incoming police chief recently endorsed 30X30 amidst&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cjonline.com/story/news/local/2024/11/14/topeka-police-chief-finalist-wants-more-female-officers-gop-objects/76220824007/">GOP pushback on quotas for women</a>.Given policing’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.theiacp.org/sites/default/files/239416_IACP_RecruitmentBR_HR_0.pdf">staffing crisis</a>, local leaders would be remiss not to make a bigger play for half of the state’s population. After 2020,&nbsp;<a href="https://klcjournal.com/wichitas-police-shortage/">Wichita</a>&nbsp;was 14% below authorized full-strength,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cjonline.com/story/news/local/2022/10/18/police-chief-union-disagree-on-whether-topeka-police-staffing-crisis/69569929007/">Topeka</a>&nbsp;13%, and&nbsp;<a href="https://johnsoncountypost.com/2022/03/15/police-vacancies-142647/">Overland Park</a>&nbsp;11%. Also,&nbsp;<a href="https://30x30initiative.org/what-works/">research</a>&nbsp;shows women police are less apt to use excessive force, perceived as more honest and compassionate, named in fewer complaints/lawsuits and hold strong&nbsp;<a href="https://www.governing.com/magazine/a-nationwide-effort-to-put-more-women-on-the-force">communication skills</a>&nbsp;- an advantage for a job considered&nbsp;<a href="https://www.governing.com/magazine/a-nationwide-effort-to-put-more-women-on-the-force">90 percent social work</a>&nbsp;today.Nationally, 14% of sworn officers are female. Kansas is only 12% with&nbsp;<a href="https://policedata.org/report/ks">use of force incidents climbing</a>. Two jurisdictions with falling use of force incidents include Junction City and Leavenworth. Curiously, they have two of the highest female officer rates at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas.gov/kbi/stats/stats_law.shtml">27%</a>&nbsp;after hitting single digits in 2003. By contrast, the Kansas Highway Patrol added just three female officers since 2003 and currently sit at 6%.Moving towards a 30% female recruit goal aligns with a representative bureaucracy ideal where credibility, fairness, trust, and performance are heightened as civil servant composition reflects the population composition they serve.&nbsp;Will our consent be more about climbing 5-foot walls or breaking glass walls?For the police are us. The advisory was issued because of a waterline break at the water treatment plant resulting in potential bacterial contamination in the water entering the distribution system.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind notice following testing at a certified laboratory.

Boil Water Advisory Rescinded for the City of Russell, Russell County

The Salina Fire Department has introduced the first of seven new fire apparatus ordered earlier this year, marking a significant upgrade to the department's firefighting capabilities.

Quint 4, now stationed at Fire House 4 on Salina's east side, has been operational for several weeks. According to a statement from the fire department, crews have been actively training with the new apparatus to familiarize themselves with its features and functions.

The vehicle has a 107-foot aerial ladder, allowing firefighters to reach elevated structures or conduct rescues from significant heights. It also carries 475 gallons of water, 25 gallons of firefighting foam, and an array of firefighting tools, hoses, and equipment.

Among its advanced features is a battery-powered hydraulic combi tool, commonly called the “jaws of life,” used during vehicle accidents to access and extricate trapped individuals.

The arrival of Quint 4 is part of a broader investment in the Salina Fire Department to enhance response times and operational efficiency.&nbsp; Additional apparatus from the February order will arrive in the coming months.&nbsp;

Residents can expect to see the new fire truck during emergencies and training exercises around the city.&nbsp;

The Salina Salvation Army’s annual Angel Tree Project is in full swing and this year 343 angels are on the trees representing children 12 years old or younger who might not otherwise experience the joy of Christmas.

The Angel Tree Project provides detailed information for each child, including clothing and shoe sizes, to help donors purchase personalized gifts or gift cards. Salina Police Department officers are investigating the theft of specialized equipment reported by Kansas Gas Service employees working in the 200 block of W. Claflin Avenue.&nbsp;

According to Capt. James Feldman of the Salina Police Department, the incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 5. Workers had temporarily set down a Radio Detection TX-5 gas line locator in an orange safety backpack while performing tasks in the area. When they returned, the equipment was missing.

The stolen unit, used to locate underground gas lines, was valued at $5,000.

No suspects or witnesses have been identified, and SPD officers are urging anyone with information about the theft to contact the Salina Police Department at (785) 826-7210 or Crimestoppers at (785) 825-TIPS.

Those wanting to gain experience with 3D printing can now take a course through&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/professional-education/">professional education and outreach</a>&nbsp;at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://salina.ksu.edu/">Kansas State University Salina</a>&nbsp;to learn the fundamentals of using the technology.

Beginning on January 21, 2025, K-State Salina is offering a hybrid&nbsp;four-week course for 3D printing where participants will learn the essentials, understand the mechanics of a printer and gain the confidence to experiment on their own. Through the hands-on course, learners will assemble a 3D printer, troubleshoot common printing issues that arise,&nbsp;and&nbsp;learn the uses and applications of 3D printing&nbsp;as well as how&nbsp;to detect and salvage a print failure.

3D printing is the art of creating physical objects from a digital design by using materials such as plastic, metal and resin. This process builds the object layer by layer and is often a cost-&nbsp;and time-efficient alternative to traditional manufacturing. 3D printing also serves many uses across different professional industries,&nbsp;including manufacturing, engineering, medicine, architecture and other consumer goods&nbsp;industries.

Sawyer Stoskopf is instructing the course and has experience troubleshooting and building 3D printers. Stoskopf is familiar with labs where he's gained the skills of machining, welding, composites, material testing and assisting in teaching students.

"3D printing at K-State Salina will open up a new realm of creativity for participants that&nbsp;allow for unique ideas and designs to come to life,"&nbsp;Stoskopf&nbsp;said.&nbsp;"While 3D printing can be a fun hobby, it also involves complex problem-solving and technical skills. This course helps learners develop these skills, making 3D printing more rewarding and paving the way for more advanced projects."

The 3D printing course at K-State Salina is open to individuals ages 14 and older. Those under 18 will require parental permission. The total cost for the course is $399, which includes the cost of the printer and filament to complete projects. Through the hands-on course, learners will assemble a 3D printer, troubleshoot common printing issues that arise,&nbsp;and&nbsp;learn the uses and applications of 3D printing&nbsp;as well as how&nbsp;to detect and salvage a print failure.3D printing is the art of creating physical objects from a digital design by using materials such as plastic, metal and resin. This process builds the object layer by layer and is often a cost-&nbsp;and time-efficient alternative to traditional manufacturing. 3D printing also serves many uses across different professional industries,&nbsp;including manufacturing, engineering, medicine, architecture and other consumer goods&nbsp;industries.Sawyer Stoskopf is instructing the course and has experience troubleshooting and building 3D printers. Stoskopf is familiar with labs where he's gained the skills of machining, welding, composites, material testing and assisting in teaching students."3D printing at K-State Salina will open up a new realm of creativity for participants that&nbsp;allow for unique ideas and designs to come to life,"&nbsp;Stoskopf&nbsp;said.&nbsp;"While 3D printing can be a fun hobby, it also involves complex problem-solving and technical skills. This course helps learners develop these skills, making 3D printing more rewarding and paving the way for more advanced projects."The 3D printing course at K-State Salina is open to individuals ages 14 and older. Those under 18 will require parental permission. The total cost for the course is $399, which includes the cost of the printer and filament to complete projects. Saline County Jail Bookings, Dec. 6

The Salina Police Department warns residents to remain vigilant after a local woman fell victim to a scam that cost her $1,900.

According to SPD Captain James Feldman, a 40-year-old Salina resident reported ongoing issues with her internet service. While attempting to resolve the problem, she searched online for a customer service number for Cox Communications.  She called 877-508-2794, a number she found online, and was connected to someone who claimed her account was flagged for illegal gambling and child pornography transactions.

The scam escalated when she was transferred to someone claiming to represent Chase Bank. The fraudsters convinced her to purchase $1,900 in Apple and Walmart gift cards and provide the card numbers, promising to refund the amount to her account. When the funds were not returned, she contacted Chase Bank using the number on the back of her credit card, only to learn that her account had no such charges and Cox had not flagged her account.&nbsp;

Feldman emphasized that no legitimate company or government entity will ever request payment via gift cards. Residents are urged to contact customer service numbers listed on official bills or credit cards to avoid falling victim to similar scams.

Each day on his drive to K-State’s football stadium, Coach Bill Snyder remembered driving past the agricultural research plots. That stadium now bears his name - as does a new wheat variety developed by K-State’s wheat breeding program. For the 2024 year-end giving season, everyone can be a part of launching the KS Bill Snyder variety and supporting wheat research as part of the Legendary Greats giving campaign by the Kansas Wheat Commission Research Foundation (KWCRF).&nbsp;

“The people here are very special, and what you do is meaningful,” Snyder said during a KWCRF event last spring. “When I came here in 1989, I learned that Kansas State people are truly special. They asked, ‘What can we do for you?’ That’s the Kansas State farmer way.”

The KWCRF supports wheat research above and beyond the dollars contributed by Kansas farmers through the checkoff by providing a mechanism for donors to give meaningfully to the future of wheat production. The foundation attracts a wide range of donors, from individuals with deep family ties to wheat production to global supporters. Established in 2012, the foundation has grown to more than $6 million in assets, highlighting the critical need for public-private partnerships in wheat research. Gifts to the KWCRF are used exclusively for wheat research and are tax-deductible.

“The goal in the end is to increase the profitability of Kansas wheat farmers,” said Tammy McClellan, KWCRF manager of donor relations. “And probably that's one of the reasons I love this work the most because I'm married to a Kansas wheat farmer, and I am a Kansas wheat farmer.”

“My father-in-law was on the Kansas Wheat Commission when they made their first vote to start putting funding into research. So, it's a nice family tradition to be involved in research.”&nbsp;

This giving season, the KWCRF is accepting gifts to the Legendary Greats – KS Bill Snyder &amp; Kansas Wheat Campaign. Donors will be helping promote wheat research during the 2025 fall football season as the variety KS Bill Snyder is introduced to the public. Donors to the campaign will be recognized with other donors in a display inside the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center, located directly across from the Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium.&nbsp;

KS Bill Snyder — the wheat variety — was the result of the long-running breeding program at the K-State Agricultural Research Center at Hays, led by Dr. Guorong Zhang, K-State wheat breeder, and his team. KS Bill Snyder is a medium-maturity and medium-short height variety that was the top-performing variety in the Southern Regional Performance Nursery in 2022. KS Bill Snyder has a solid disease package with good-to-intermediate resistance of stripe, leaf and stem rust, along with moderate resistance to Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (Wsm2 gene) and intermediate resistance to Triticum mosaic virus. It is also resistant to soilborne mosaic virus, allowing it to move into central Kansas, where it has shown decent yield potential. KS Bill Snyder, along with its very high yield potential, also has good drought tolerance, high tillering capacity, excellent straw strength and good quality.

Releasing a new variety like KS Bill Snyder is the result of years of work, requiring maintaining research greenhouses, keeping research equipment top-notch and supporting the teamwork between wheat breeders, professors and their research teams. This long, complicated work makes each release a true celebration, which is one reason why individual donors like Stephen Graham and his wife Sherry choose to donate to the KWCRF.&nbsp;

“You got to remember that this doesn't happen overnight; it takes many years of work and investment to make new varieties happen,” said Graham, who is a former assistant to the Dean of Agriculture for the College of Agriculture at Kansas State University and administrator for the Kansas Wheat Commission in 1981 through 1995. “But at the same time, it’s fun to watch it evolve, watch us learn how our wheat is used. It’s a long game, but you help support this work that benefits our state so much.”&nbsp;

Donors can contribute in various ways, including cash donations, grain or stock gifts, legacy gifts through estate planning, and Required Minimum Distributions from retirement accounts. This flexibility allows everyone to participate, regardless of financial circumstances. Donors can even specify what specific research areas their contributions will support, ensuring every dollar is used effectively and in line with donor goals.&nbsp;

“I appreciate walking in every morning, coming to work and seeing the variety and diversity of those donors,” said Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice president of research and operations. “It shows you the passion for Kansas wheat and wheat research from different segments of the industry.”&nbsp;

There are sculptures and habitations that bespeak of human presence—somewhere—in the world of Flow, but there are no humans seen in this utterly beguiling animated feature. Instead, the natural environment dominates the screen in gorgeously rendered hues and textures, becoming a character itself in this thrilling adventure story of survival and camaraderie in the animal kingdom.

Our hero is a tiny grey cat whose big eyes and innocent curiosity immediately charm us. But this is no domesticated pet, and the landscape is fraught with dangers that would make Odysseus think twice before setting out on his odyssey. Narrowly evading a pack of wild dogs and a stampede of deer, our cat must contend with a flood that forces it to join a sailboat of other creatures—a sleepy capybara, a lemur jealously guarding its horde of treasures, a lovable dopey Labrador, and a watchful bird who might be friend or foe.

Director Gints Zilbalodis doesn’t anthropomorphize the animals—there’s no human dialogue, so rest assured, no celebrities doing wacky voices—and much of the film’s charm is that Flow just lets animals be animals (without jeopardizing real animals by doing live-action). The meticulously observed movements, sounds, quirks, and behaviors of real animals show a love for the non-human world that makes Flow truly endearing. And when the refugees of this miniature Noah’s Ark develop trust, loyalty, and compassion for each other, the lesson for us humans couldn’t be more powerful.

The action scenes are suspenseful, the characters indelible, and throughout this lean, fast-moving story, we don’t miss humans at all. Instead, we’re filled with a deep respect for the resilience and adaptability of Nature—and an adorable, wide-eyed little cat is precisely the superhero we need today.

Salina Art Center Cinema Dec. showtimes

Kansas State University Salina Campus invites the community to join the annual Candy Canes and Airplanes event on Saturday, December 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Hangar 600, 2720 Arnold Avenue in Salina.

The family-friendly event will feature a holiday-themed aircraft display, plane train rides, ornament decorating, and letter writing to Santa. Visitors can also explore K-State and civilian aircraft while enjoying activities hosted by K-State Salina student clubs.

K-State Salina's Candy Canes and Airplanes this Saturday

The Silver Needles Quilt Guild brought holiday joy to homebound seniors and caregivers this week by donating 295 handmade Christmas ornaments to Meals on Wheels Director Rosie Walter. The ornaments will be given as holiday gifts to those participating in the Meals on Wheels program.

Over the years, the guild has made a tradition of crafting holiday gifts for the program, including pillowcases last year and placemats the year before.

In addition to supporting Meals on Wheels, the guild donated 56 handmade ornaments to residents at Pinnacle Park Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Salina.

The holiday giving is just one example of the guild’s generosity. In November, the Silver Needles Quilt Guild donated:

⦁ 19 quilts to the Love Chloe Foundation. 

⦁ 27 quilts to Salina Regional Health Center, including 10 for patients and 17 Christmas-themed quilts for children admitted during the holiday season.

Governor Kelly orders flags at half-staff for Pearl Harbor Day

According to the Creighton University&nbsp;Business Conditions Index, the manufacturing economy in the Midwest is struggling.

"Manufacturing is moving sideways to a bit down," said economist Ernie Goss. "Job losses, again, for the U.S., 90,000 jobs in manufacturing were lost this year. For the region, of course, a much smaller number. In fact, close to even, about 2,000 jobs in manufacturing were lost in this part of the country."

Goss also sees potential headwinds on the horizon if the delayed longshoremen's strike rekindles next month.

"January the 15th, we'll see the 17 East Coast and Gulf Coast ports maybe shut down," Goss said. "We'll just see. The real distressing part of that is they're negotiating for higher wages, and I salute that, but they're also attempting to implement throwing out automation. They don't want to have their jobs replaced with automation."

Goss sees that as fundamentally counterproductive in the long run.&nbsp;

"All of us, our wages depend highly on increasing productivity," Goss said. "If you're in an industry where productivity's not going to grow, then you're probably not going to get the wage increases you would expect unless you get protection from the government."

The question is just how protectionist will the incoming Trump administration turn out to be, and how much is negotiation for the best deal, but will ultimately be backed off of as a practical matter come January.

The change is necessary to implement lockbox payment processing.

Customers must send the remit portion of their bill back using their method of payment, as the lockbox payment processing system will not be able to post their payment if the remit portion with the required account information is not received. 

Customers who do not send in the remit portion of their bill risk assessing a late fee to their account, as payments received without the remit portion may delay payment processing past the bill’s due date.

The Salina Public Library is pleased to announce&nbsp;Hidden Figures, an art exhibit by local artist Cary Brinegar, on display from&nbsp;December 6, 2024, to January 17, 2025. A public reception will be held on&nbsp;January 3, 2025, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.&nbsp;in the library gallery to celebrate the artist and their work.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Cary Brinegar, a retired special educator and long-time Salina resident, is a member of the Kansas Figure Drawing Group and an experienced creator of abstract pen and ink “doodles.” Over the years, Brinegar has expanded their artistic range, incorporating figures and forms into his work while exploring diverse media.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Hidden Figures&nbsp;exhibit features a collection of figurative oil paintings created using pentimento—a technique where original elements of a painting reappear through overpainting—paired with found objects that evoke figurative forms. As Brinegar explains, “I approached this work as an exercise in reuse, color experimentation, and new techniques, in addition to my quest for a pleasing figurative abstraction.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Visitors will experience a unique blend of traditional and abstract art that challenges perception and celebrates creative evolution.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This event and exhibit are free and open to the public.&nbsp;&nbsp;
