An Abilene woman was arrested after a vehicle and other items taken from a north Salina residence were found with her at a vacant house in another part of town.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning that officers were called to a residence in the 300 block of Forest Avenue on Wednesday for the report of a burglary the day before.

The front door was damaged and multiple items were taken from the residence, including a 1999 Dodge Dakota pickup valued at $3,900, Hanus said. Damage to the door was estimated at $500.

Then, at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, officers were sent to the 1100 block of S. Marymount Road for the report of a person who was in a vacant house. The officers made contact with the person, identified as Chante Rosalez, 50, of Abilene, and convinced her to come out of the house. 

The Dakota was found in the garage and a firearm and miscellaneous items taken from the Forest Avenue residence were found inside the house. Additionally, police found illegal drugs while securing the property, Hanus said.

Rosalez was taken to the Salina Police Department for questioning and was then arrested on the following requested charges, Hanus said.

●Criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

The vehicle and other items were returned to the owner, Hanus said.

Abilene woman arrested on requested drug, other charges

A local man was arrested on multiple requested charges after an alleged domestic dispute at a west Salina motel Thursday evening.

Officers were sent to Americas Best Value Inn, 636 Westport Boulevard, for the report of a man and woman arguing. When the officers arrived, they made contact with a woman and an uncooperative man, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said.

The woman, a 40-year-old from Salina, told police that her boyfriend had assaulted her and took her cellphone from her.

The boyfriend, identified as Xavier R.T. Allen, 26, of Salina, declined to speak to officers and was taken into custody, Hanus said.

Allen was arrested on the following requested charges, according to Hanus.

Disturbance at west Salina motel results in arrest of local man

CONCORDIA - Singer-songwriter Savanna Chestnut will be the special guest at a two-night event for Cloud County Community College’s final Cook Series presentation for 2021-2022.

On Thursday at 7 p.m. in Cook Theatre on the Cloud County Community College Campus, Chestnut will discuss her life and career as a singer-songwriter. Then, on March 26 at 7 p.m., Chestnut will be live in concert with her band, The Field Hands, at the Brown Grand Theatre in downtown Concordia. The Lazy Wayne Band will be the opening act for Chestnut. Both events are free and open to the public.

Chestnut is a country music singer/songwriter whose music reflects her&nbsp;roots. Growing up&nbsp;in Americus, a small farm town near Emporia, she developed a love for the sweet, twangy sounds of old school&nbsp;country music, and that is what she aims to bring back&nbsp;to the modern country scene. She started writing and performing around age 13 and she constantly tours around the country playing a wide variety of&nbsp;venues. Chestnut has opened&nbsp;for acts like Gary Allan, Eli Young Band, Tanya Tucker, Ned Ledoux, Sunny Sweeny, Ward Davis, Granger Smith, Restless Heart, Shenandoah, and more.&nbsp;

I just started Baby Step 3 of your plan. It took me about 12 months to pay off $8,000 in debt during Baby Step 2. I am 50, and I work in the printing industry making about $38,000 a year in a city with no local or state income tax. The 25th anniversary edition of EquiFest is scheduled to open Friday in Salina!

Known as the state's premier all-breed horse fair and exposition, EquiFest is scheduled for Friday through Sunday at Tony's Pizza Events Center, 800 The Midway, and the nearby Saline County Expo Center, 900 Greely Avenue.

Admission is $20 per daily wristband or $50 per three-day wristband, according to information from the Kansas Horse Council. The box office is scheduled to open at 9 a.m. each day.

Smoky View 4-H Club members attended a virtual, district-wide project meeting on March 10 to learn more about leadership.&nbsp;

Ambassadors for the K-State Staley School of Leadership discussed topics such as positional and non-positional leadership with the group. Positional leadership is leadership in a position, such as a teacher or the president of an organization. Non-positional leadership is leadership outside of leadership positions. This could be teaching a friend a new hobby or being a good role model for younger people.&nbsp;

The ambassadors asked the 4-H members discussion questions about leadership to get the members thinking about how they can be better leaders.&nbsp;

The Smoky View 4-H Club plans to meet again at 4 p.m. March 20 at the Salemsborg Fellowship Center.

Saline County Democrats elect officers; Phil Black is chair

WASHINGTON&nbsp;– U.S. Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall and U.S. Representative Tracey Mann on Thursday urged U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg to require SkyWest to continue its contracted level of service to four Kansas airports until a new carrier can be secured, according to a media release from Moran's office.

Last week, SkyWest announced it would be ending air service to Dodge City, Hays, Liberal and Salina in the near future. The Department of Transportation recently announced their intent to bar SkyWest from ending its contract until replacement carriers could be found.

“Given the urgency of this situation, we request continued communication with our regional airport authorities on the ongoing efforts to find a new carrier to replace SkyWest Airlines,”&nbsp;the members wrote. “Additionally, we support the Department of Transportation’s requirement that SkyWest retain their contracted level of service until the conclusion of the EAS selection case, and we urge continued commitment to the Hold-In Order until a new carrier is found.”

Kansas Wesleyan’s Department of Music has announced the schedule for its upcoming music festival.

Yotefest: A Music Festival for Today is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday and March 24 and 25. The festival is open to the public at no charge.

“Salina’s always been a great community for those interested in the arts,” said James McAllister, department chair. “We’re excited to be a part of that once again with our annual March music festival. ‘Yotefest’ is not only the idea of everything KWU music is, but it’s the idea of all that is expressed by the entirety of music. The community will be directly involved via an open mic night, there will be music from different cultures, and we’ll hear compositions from new composers, including KWU students!”

Yotefest opens Monday at 6 p.m. with an open mic night at Salina’s Ad Astra Books and Coffeehouse, 141 N. Santa Fe Avenue. Percussionist Matthew Coley joins the proceedings the next night in Sams Chapel with a special concert performance at 7:30 p.m., and, after a day off Wednesday, things pick up again March 24 with the New Music at KWU concert. This special 7:30 p.m. performance will feature recent compositions by KWU faculty and students.

The series wraps up March 25 with Music of the Americas, a special string ensemble event that will include a number of vibrant works from South American composers. Once again, the event takes place at 7:30 p.m. in Sams Chapel.

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Today Governor Laura Kelly appointed Andrea Purvis, Abilene, to the 6th Judicial District vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Terri Johnson.

The 6th Judicial District is made up of Bourbon County, Linn County, and Miami County.

“Andrea will bring strong legal experience and knowledge to the 6th&nbsp;Judicial District,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “Her commitment to public service and dedication to the judicial system will serve the community well.”

Purvis was elected Dickinson County Attorney in 2017 where she manages the office responsible for prosecuting felony and misdemeanor criminal cases. Prior to being elected, she was an Assistant County Attorney for Dickinson County Attorney’s Office from 2012 to 2017. &nbsp;In addition to her prosecutorial work, Purvis has legal experience as a Public Defender working for the State Board of Indigent Defense Services from 2009 until 2012. Purvis is a member of the Kansas County and District Attorney’s Association and the Dickinson County Bar Association and is active in her local community. She earned her law degree from Washburn University School of Law in 2007.

“I have spent my legal career applying the rule of law to make decisions that might not be popular, but are impartial and fair,”&nbsp;Purvis said. “I will continue to treat all people fairly and respectfully who may come before me as I preside from the bench.”

District court judges in the 6th Judicial District are appointed by the governor and selected from nominees chosen by a district nominating commission. Judges in nominating commission districts are subject to retention elections every four years.

The other nominees selected by the district nominating commission were Judge Valorie Leblanc and Gayla Mason.

Dickinson County Attorney picked for judge position in 6th District

An unlocked pickup yielded a burglar an $800 tuner earlier this week.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning that sometime between 8 a.m. Monday and 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, someone broke into a 2012 Dodge Ram crew cab pickup and stole an $800 DiabloSport Trinity 2 tuner.

A 38-year-old Salina man told police that he had parked his pickup at his workplace in the 400 block of S. Clark Street on Monday morning before going out of town for a job. He thought he had locked the pickup, Hanus said. When the man returned the next day, he found the pickup was unlocked and the tuner was missing.

Hanus said police were checking the area for surveillance video.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly today announced the first round of 2022 funding recipients for the Tourism Marketing Grant Program (TMGP). 

The TMGP, administered by Kansas Tourism, assists Destination Marketing Organizations, tourism communities and travel industry businesses or events. The program helps with first-time marketing efforts or enhancement of current marketing with new or innovative strategies.&nbsp;

“Our tourism industry injects millions into our economy and adds another incentive for families to put down roots in our state,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“These grants will enhance local community efforts to develop quality tourism assets that will grow the economy and improve the quality of life for all Kansans.”&nbsp;

Kansas Tourism will provide a total of $21,685 in TMGP funding for three tourism marketing projects. Funds will be used to encourage travelers to select Kansas as a destination.&nbsp;

“Tourism is all about bringing visitors and new dollars to Kansas,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Commerce Secretary David Toland said.&nbsp;“We’re pleased to support local marketing efforts that showcase the great places to visit across our scenic and vibrant state. When someone travels to a community, they eat at local restaurants, stay at local hotels, shop at local stores—and all of this supports community growth and economic prosperity.”&nbsp;

Kansas Governor's OfficeTOPEKA –&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly today announced the first round of 2022 funding recipients for the Tourism Marketing Grant Program (TMGP). The TMGP, administered by Kansas Tourism, assists Destination Marketing Organizations, tourism communities and travel industry businesses or events. The program helps with first-time marketing efforts or enhancement of current marketing with new or innovative strategies.&nbsp;“Our tourism industry injects millions into our economy and adds another incentive for families to put down roots in our state,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“These grants will enhance local community efforts to develop quality tourism assets that will grow the economy and improve the quality of life for all Kansans.”&nbsp;Kansas Tourism will provide a total of $21,685 in TMGP funding for three tourism marketing projects. Funds will be used to encourage travelers to select Kansas as a destination.&nbsp;“Tourism is all about bringing visitors and new dollars to Kansas,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Commerce Secretary David Toland said.&nbsp;“We’re pleased to support local marketing efforts that showcase the great places to visit across our scenic and vibrant state. Kelly: Clay County in 1st round of tourism grant recipients

The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating as arson an early Wednesday morning fire that destroyed a wooden bridge in the northern part of the county.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that a motorist driving on Interstate 70 first reported the fire just after 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. As it turned out, the fire actually was on a wooden bridge that connected some farmland with the "T" intersection of N. Simpson Road and Campbell Road, a short distance south of the interstate.

The fire completely destroyed the wooden planks of the bridge owned by Saline County and is believed to have damaged a wall of the box culvert underneath. Loss was estimated at $6,000.

Soldan said investigators believe the fire was started with an accelerant.

From veggies to fruits to herbs, we’ll share resources and overview the opportunities and best practices for success in your garden," Graves noted in a news release.
