The world has become an anxious, worrisome place. Anxiety has been escalating on a near-vertical trendline—currently, 40 million adults in the U.S. alone are struggling.<a href="https://adaa.org/about-adaa/press-room/facts-statistics" target="_blank">1</a>&nbsp;

Make no mistake: Even if you don’t struggle with anxiety, it&nbsp;is&nbsp;real, and it’s powerful. I know I’ve been weighed down by anxiety and the runaway train of fear and compulsion. But I also know that healing and peace is possible when we decide to change our identity, take ownership of our thoughts and actions, and partner with anxiety instead of going to war with it.

Anxiety is like a smoke alarm. It goes off when it detects a threat in our bodies or our environments—like when we feel we’re in danger, alone or out of control. In most cases (though not all), anxiety does not mean something is wrong inside us, but rather, it means there are fires in our environment—like disconnection, safety concerns, overstimulation or past trauma—that need to be addressed. Sometimes, it’s as simple as drinking way too much coffee and not getting enough sleep.

Healing our anxious minds and bodies is a daily and lifelong journey, but it’s one worth taking. As you learn how to deal with your anxiety, I want to encourage you to start by focusing on these six key things:

1. Stop using anxiety as an identity

Millions of people have been labeled as disordered. They have anxiety and believe they’ve got a disease. Hear me say this:&nbsp;You are not your anxiety. Instead, anxiety is a&nbsp;learned physical and mental response to a world full of threats and disconnection—perceived or real. It’s your body’s way of trying to take care of you. And since you learned it, it can be unlearned. &nbsp;

Learn to pay attention to your personal anxiety alarms and what makes them go off. Maybe it’s running into a certain coworker in the hall or being ignored by someone you care about. Or maybe it’s when you arrive home after a long, exhausting day and feel afraid to step inside because&nbsp;loneliness&nbsp;is&nbsp;waiting to greet you. Maybe it’s a past tragedy, deep trauma or hyper-stressed mind.

Yes, the alarms are loud, and your thoughts might spin out of control. But the longer you ignore the alarms, the longer you go without getting what you need. Pay attention to what your anxiety alarms are telling you instead of running from the noise.

3. Take an inventory of your life&nbsp;

All change begins with owning reality. You must ask yourself:&nbsp;What’s going right for me and what’s not?&nbsp;To begin healing, you&nbsp;must&nbsp;take inventory of how things are going.

Here are some questions to help you begin. Write down your answers to see what you learn and what needs to change.

●Am I safe and valued in my current environment?

●Have I dealt with past traumas and painful relationships?

●Do I have a friend or a community I can count on?

●Do I find purpose and meaning in my work or family?

●Am I eating well, exercising, and getting seven to nine hours of sleep every night?

●What forms of distraction or comfort am I addicted to?

●What stimulants am I consuming (caffeine, sugar, etc.)?

4. Make a habit of identifying your thoughts and emotions

An anxious mind can feel like your brain is filled with chaos. Writing your thoughts and feelings on paper gets them out of your body and often takes their power away. Instead of chaos, your thoughts become just words on paper. From there, you can sort through the truth and the lies of what’s on the paper. You can demand evidence from the thoughts and learn to challenge the critical voice or worst-case scenario death spiral inside your head.

5. Go from controlling your thoughts to changing your actions

When you look at your thoughts on paper, you can begin to identify what’s&nbsp;within&nbsp;your control and what’s&nbsp;outside&nbsp;of&nbsp;your control. For example, let’s consider your workplace. Say you’re overwhelmed and burned out at work. You can’t control the decisions your boss and coworkers make, but you&nbsp;can&nbsp;decide how&nbsp;you&nbsp;will act at work—how you show up early, work with integrity and excellence, and respect others. You can choose to avoid gossip, delete obnoxious group texts, and speak up when necessary. You can also choose to set boundaries, or maybe even look for a different job.

Learning to control and direct your thoughts and actions takes time, strength and practice—just like working out a muscle. But we can all do it!

Now, if you’ve taken to the steps to address the things within your control and you’re still struggling, you might be considering&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATRwU2IBQ9Y" target="_blank">anxiety medication</a>. I want to be clear: As a society, we are&nbsp;way&nbsp;overmedicated. But for a season, medication can help you dial down or “turn off” your anxiety alarms. But silencing the alarm won’t put out the fires, which means, in almost every situation,&nbsp;medication is not a long-term solution.

Years ago, anxiety medications were an important piece of my healing puzzle. They didn’t solve or take away my anxiety, but they did help turn down the volume on the alarms so I could meet with a counselor, address my work and home life, and begin to take better care of myself. I haven’t taken them in years—but they served their purpose for a season. Don’t let anyone tell you that all medications are evil. And don’t let anyone tell you that medication by itself can cure anxiety.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Before taking medications, I recommend working with a counselor and a doctor to examine your diet, sleep, relationships, trauma and family histories. If you do end up taking medicine for a season, it can be a remarkable support as you heal and change your thoughts and actions. Just remember that it doesn’t have to be—and almost never should be—a part of your story forever.&nbsp;&nbsp;

6. Connect with real people in real ways

Our bodies can’t be well without regular, connected community. We biologically, spiritually and emotionally need others—and we need them in person. Don’t turn to a screen after your alarms start to sound. Don’t text unless you have no other options. Don’t run to social media unless you truly have no place left to go.

Call someone. Go visit someone. See a real face. Hear a real voice. If it’s safe, touch a real hand. Have a real hug. Find a way to talk to or see a human. Connect with people you love or who you can be vulnerable with. This might mean calling a therapist, a pastor, your neighbor, a hotline, a friend or an old college buddy you haven’t seen in forever. Make true human connection a critical and essential part of your life.

The next time the alarms start ringing, pause. Ask yourself what the alarms are trying to tell you. Remember: You have tools to deal with anxiety. Reach out to someone you can trust. Breathe deeply and intentionally. Challenge your thoughts and lean into healthy actions. You can do this—and you are worth the work. You are worth being well.

Get all your tax papers together and drop them off at VITA by April 7. “You can bring your papers in a shoebox, a grocery sack, or a recycled holiday gift bag,” said Mary Chegwidden, VITA Intake Volunteer.&nbsp;

“Our program allows people to come in during times that fit their schedule. We have morning, afternoon, evening, and Saturday hours available for drop-off and pick-up,” said Phil Bowman, VITA quality review volunteer.

The program’s objective is to help eligible taxpayers file their taxes and receive their refunds to improve their financial stability, one of the focus areas of the Salina Area United Way.

“Stimulus payments and child tax credits are two of the most common income questions this year, and our IRS-Certified Volunteers are here to answer questions for tax filers,” said Brenda Gutierrez, Salina Area United Way.

The Salina Area United Way provides free income tax preparation through the VITA Program to assist individuals and families earning $56,000 or less.&nbsp;The Salina VITA program's last day to drop-off is April 7, 2022. Drop-off hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. The VITA location is the Salina Area United Way office, 113 N. Seventh Street. More information about the free tax service is available by phoning (785) 827-1312.

The VITA program, created in 1969, assists underserved communities, such as low- and moderate-income individuals and limited English proficient taxpayers. VITA provides free federal and state tax return preparation and electronic filing. The IRS provides tax law training, certification, and oversight.

KWU announces latest Chopp Transfer Scholarship recipients

LAWRENCE — Average groundwater levels across western and central Kansas fell by more than a foot in 2021, with the greatest declines in the southwest portion of the state, according to preliminary data compiled by the Kansas Geological Survey.

The KGS, based at the University of Kansas, and the Division of Water Resources (DWR) of the Kansas Department of Agriculture measure about 1,400 wells every year to monitor the health of the High Plains aquifer and other aquifers in western and central Kansas. Those measurements showed an overall average decline of 1.01 feet last year. Most parts of the region saw below-average precipitation for the year, especially during the summer growing season for agricultural crops.

“The key takeaway is that 2021 started off very dry and, outside of the month of May, which is the last month most folks in western Kansas saw any measurable precipitation, dry conditions continued right into the summer and fall months,” said Brownie Wilson, KGS water-data manager.

The 2021 decline followed an overall drop of 0.93 feet in 2020, which was another abnormally dry year. Dry years lead to increased pumping demands, primarily for irrigation, which in turn typically cause greater declines in water levels.

“The entire state is currently in some stage of drought and even with recent snowfalls, I bet it remains that way,” Wilson said.

As of the beginning of February, virtually all of Kansas was under some level of drought conditions, based on maps published by National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Southwest Kansas was experiencing extreme to exceptional drought, with widespread moderate to severe drought across the rest of the western and central Kansas regions covered by the groundwater monitoring program.

The High Plains aquifer is a network of water-bearing rock that extends into eight states. In Kansas, the aquifer comprises three components — the Ogallala aquifer, the Great Bend Prairie aquifer and the Equus Beds. Of these, the Ogallala aquifer underlies most of western Kansas and consists mainly of the Ogallala Formation, a geologic unit that formed from sediment eroded off the uplifting Rocky Mountains.

The southwest Kansas portion of the Ogallala has suffered the greatest losses since groundwater levels started dropping in the 1950s. In the drought years between 2010 and 2014, declines averaged about 3 feet per year. Since 2015, levels fell less than a foot each year until 2020, which saw a decline of 1.2 feet. In 2021, the region saw an average drop of nearly 2.2 feet.

In central Kansas, the Great Bend Prairie aquifer underlies an area encompassing Great Bend, Kinsley, Greensburg and Pratt. Farther east, the Equus Beds extends from just north of Wichita toward McPherson and Hutchinson. This area typically sees more precipitation than the western part of the state. Because the aquifer is relatively close to the land surface and sandy soils are abundant, some of this precipitation recharges — or makes its way into — the aquifer. Since 1996, when the state began administrating the water-level monitoring program, water levels in this area have remained relatively stable.

Most of the wells in the network monitored by the KGS and DWR are within the boundaries of the state’s five Groundwater Management Districts (GMDs), which are organized and governed by area landowners and local water users to address water-resources issues.

In Southwest Kansas GMD 3, average groundwater levels dropped 2.17 feet in 2021, the largest decline in the region since 2013, when groundwater levels fell 2.43 feet. The region experienced drops of 1.25 feet in 2020 and 0.80 feet in 2019.

The region saw below-average precipitation in 2021, with widespread areas receiving 50% to 75% of long-term averages.&nbsp;

“Much of southwest Kansas came out of the winter months with already below-normal precipitation levels and, outside of one month, that trend continued through the growing season and into the fall and winter months of 2022,” Wilson said.

GMD 3 includes all or part of Grant, Haskell, Gray, Finney, Stanton, Ford, Morton, Stevens, Seward, Hamilton, Kearny, and Meade counties. Most of the wells monitored in the district are drilled into the Ogallala aquifer, except in a few areas where they draw from the deeper Dakota aquifer.

Dry conditions were also prevalent in the west-central and northwest portions of the state. Western Kansas GMD 1 experienced a groundwater-level drop of 0.51 feet in 2021, after falling 0.59 in 2020 and 0.14 in 2019. Declines there tend to be small but steady. GMD 1 includes portions of Wallace, Greeley, Wichita, Scott, and Lane counties, where the majority of wells are drilled into the Ogallala aquifer.

Northwest Kansas GMD 4 experienced a drop of 0.51 feet in groundwater levels, after a decline of 0.70 feet in 2020 and an increase of 0.60 feet in 2019. GMD 4 covers Sherman, Thomas, Sheridan and parts of Cheyenne, Rawlins, Decatur, Graham, Wallace, Logan, and Gove counties. Groundwater there is pumped from the Ogallala aquifer and shallow alluvial sources associated with streams.

In contrast to the significant declines observed in western Kansas GMDs, increases and decreases in water levels in Great Bend GMD 5 and Equus Beds GMD 2 in the central part of the state tend to even out over time. Both districts have localized areas of long-term groundwater declines but as a whole have remained relatively stable.

Big Bend GMD 5, centered on the Great Bend Prairie aquifer, experienced a water-level decline of 0.81 feet in 2021, after a decline of 0.69 feet in 2020 and an increase of 1.75 feet in 2019. Precipitation across the region ranged from average to below average in 2021. GMD 5 includes Stafford and Pratt counties and parts of Barton, Pawnee, Edwards, Kiowa, Reno, and Rice counties.

Equus Beds GMD 2, a major source of water for Wichita, Hutchinson and surrounding towns, saw the smallest decline of 2021, at 0.13 feet, after experiencing the largest decrease of 2020 at 1.8 feet. Precipitation in the region came in slightly below average for the year. GMD 2 covers portions of Reno, Sedgwick, Harvey, and McPherson counties.

The KGS measured 586 wells in western Kansas, and DWR staff from field offices in Stockton, Garden City, and Stafford measured 224, 355 and 258 wells, respectively, in western and central Kansas. Most of the wells, spread over 48 counties, are used for irrigation and have been measured for decades with landowners’ permission.

Measurements are taken primarily in January, when water levels are least likely to fluctuate due to seasonal irrigation. The measurement results, available on the KGS Water Well Levels&nbsp;<a href="https://geohydro.kgs.ku.edu/geohydro/wizard/" target="_blank">website</a>, are provisional and subject to revision based on additional analysis.

Groundwater levels fall across western, central Kansas

BARNARD - Thirty-three dogs were removed from a residence in Barnard on Monday and the owner was later arrested on requested cruelty to animals charges.

"On Monday, March 21, 2022 the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant at a residence in Barnard, Kansas. As a result of the search warrant, 33 dogs of various ages and breeds were removed from the deplorable conditions they were living in," Sheriff Dustin Florence noted in a news release on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/LincolnCountyKSSheriff">Lincoln County Sheriff's Office Facebook page</a> today.

Barnard is located in northeastern Lincoln County.

Cruelty to animals charges have been requested for the owner of the dogs, who has not been named. He was being held in the Lincoln County Jail, the release noted. The case has been forwarded to the Lincoln County Attorney's Office.

The sheriff's office thanked several organizations for assisting with the rescue of the dogs, including the Sedgwick County Animal Shelter, All Dogs Bark and Play Rescue, Golden Belt Humane Society, the State of Kansas Animal Facilities inspectors, Solomon Valley Veterinarian Hospital, and a number of volunteers.

"The Sheriff's Office would also add that owning animals is a huge commitment. Dogs, cats and other domestic animals require food, water and shelter at all times, as well as proper medical care. We understand that sometimes the love people have for animals outweighs their abilities to properly care for them; either financially or proper shelter or medically. We encourage anyone who may be struggling to properly care for their animals to reach out before the problem becomes much larger than anyone can handle," Florence wrote in the news release.

UPDATE: Salina man faces multiple charges, including aggravated arson

A Salina woman was arrested on a requested charge of battery in connection to an incident with an emergency medical technician late Tuesday morning.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning that officers and EMTs were sent to the Kwik Shop at 1727 W. Crawford at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday for the report of a person in the women's restroom who appeared to be in a distressed mental state.

During an onsite medical evaluation by EMTs, the 25-year-old Salina woman allegedly battered one of the EMTs and subsequently was arrested on a requested charge of battery, Hanus said.

Salina woman arrested after EMT allegedly battered while on a call

The Salina Police Department this morning released the following statement concerning a shooting early Wednesday in south Salina.&nbsp;

On March 23, 2022, at approximately 1:58 a.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in the 2200 block of Wesley Street in reference to a 27-year-old male being shot. The male was transported to Salina Regional Health Center by ambulance with what is believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The police department’s preliminary investigative findings indicate that a domestic disturbance, involving several family members, occurred at the residence. The disturbance involved firearms and knives. Multiple shots were fired, and the 27-year-old male was shot more than once.

The Salina Police Department has been in consultation with the Saline County Attorney’s Office. At this time, it appears that the individual who shot the 27-year-old was acting in accordance with Kansas Statutes Annotated (KSA) 21-5222, Use of Force in defense of a person; no duty to retreat.

This case is still an active investigation, and circumstances could change. No arrests have been made at this time, and there is no indication of any danger to the public.

Police investigating shooting of 27-year-old man in south Salina

Multiple items were stolen from a storage facility east of Salina over the weekend.

Saline County Sheriff's Captain Jim Hughes said this morning that sometime between Saturday and Monday, someone cut the fence at a storage facility in the 3400 block of Country Club Road. 

A recreational vehicle that was stored at the facility was burgled and a pellet grill and a 36-inch television were stolen.

Additionally, a storage unit was broken into and a set of Mizuno golf clubs, a Callaway driver, and a camp stove were stolen.

At least two other campers stored at the facility were damaged by someone trying to break into them, Hughes said. 

The total value of the property stolen was estimated at $1,500. Total damage was estimated at $750, Hughes said.

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University's Silver Key, the sophomore leadership honor society, has selected new members for the 2022-2023 academic year. To be eligible for Silver Key, students must have at least a 3.0 grade point average, be a 2021 high school graduate and in their freshmen year at the university. Silver Key members take part in a variety of community service projects throughout the semester. Local, area students selected for K-State's Silver Key society

My family and I recently enjoyed a few days off the farm having some fun in the snow in northern New Mexico.&nbsp; While homeward bound from our spring break ski trip, there were signs of a new season quickly approaching during our drive. Over our nearly eight hours on the road, our window views changed from mountainous snowy landscapes highlighting herds of grazing elk to wintery grasslands dotted with antelope.&nbsp; As we traveled from New Mexico into Oklahoma and then through western Kansas, the rangeland views slowly changed to farm ground. Remnants of the 2021 cotton, corn and sorghum crops were ever present as we took in the landscape. Mama cows and their young calves now occupied the fields that had grain harvested from them last fall.&nbsp; We could also see that this year’s wheat crop was slowly coming out of dormancy. As we continued eastbound back to our home, the wheat fields that displayed small patches of greens among fields of mostly drab browns slowly transformed into larger and more colorful sections of green. The color variations continued to change as we continued towards our central Kansas home. While appreciating the extra hour of daylight during our drive, I was able to take in the view of the fields as we got closer to our farm. The evening sunlight allowed me a glimpse of a sure sign of a quickly-approaching spring as we returned to our neighborhood. Carpets of vividly green wheat fields occupied my view. The bright green blanketed entire fields and provided an unexpected “pop” of color. The color was so intense and obviously noticeable that I immediately pointed it out to everyone in the car. We had only been gone a few days, but within that time spring had clearly sprung!&nbsp; The bright green views not only offered my family a warm welcome home but provided me with a simple reminder that we are getting closer to the end of a long, dreary and cold winter.&nbsp; Those beautiful windshield views of bright green fields provided me a gentle assurance that warmer temperatures, longer days and our busy season on the farm are just around the corner.&nbsp; As the days continue to get longer and warmer, the wheat near our home continues to showcase its magnificent beauty with its dazzling pop of emerald. While some might believe that the view of a waving golden wheat field in the summer is one of the best views in the world, I’d argue the magnificent green fields of wheat in the spring are near the top of my list. To me, it’s a color that represents an awakening that ushers in the promise of new life, growth and warmer days to come.

A group of local artists recently proved that art is, indeed, ageless.

Salina Presbyterian Manor recently hosted a reception for the winning artists in the annual Art is Ageless® juried competition.

“We are honored to exhibit artwork by seniors,” said Cathy Boos, marketing director. “Art is Ageless is unique in featuring only the works of artists age 65 and older. Our artists prove that art, in any form, is an ageless ambition.”
