Local, area studentd earn academic honors at Southwestern

McPHERSON (AP) — A 12-year-old boy has been charged in connection with the contamination of a water cooler used by a small college baseball team in Kansas. 

The boy has been charged with endangerment and criminal damage to property for allegedly pouring paint into Kansas Wesleyan’s water cooler during a doubleheader against Bethany College in Lindsborg on April 24. 

McPherson County Attorney Jennifer Wyatt said a summons would be issued for the juvenile to appear in court.

LINDSBORG —Law enforcement authorities have determined that two juvenile boys, not college students or staff, are involved in an incident in which a foreign substance, identified as line paint, was placed in a water cooler the Bethany College baseball team provided to Kansas Wesleyan University during their doubleheader on Sunday, according to a media release from Lindsborg Police.

On April 24,&nbsp; Kansas Wesleyan University (KWU) contacted the Lindsborg Police Department to file a police report regarding a foreign substance found in their baseball team’s water cooler while at Bethany College for a game. Shortly thereafter, Bethany College contacted the police department to report the same incident. A police report was filed and both colleges agreed to cooperate with the investigation.

This incident generated wide-reaching media interest after initial comments on social media claimed that a college baseball program deliberately contaminated an opponent’s water cooler. 

Allegations were made that the foreign substance found in the water of KWU’s cooler was paint thinner. Based on information obtained through the investigation, it has been determined that the foreign substance was not paint thinner, but rather line paint used on the field and to touch up bases.

The Lindsborg Police Department has conducted over 60 interviews so far, collected multiple pieces of evidence, photographed the scene, and followed various leads. Though the investigation is active and ongoing, it has been determined that no one associated with either college was responsible for tampering with the water cooler.

The Lindsborg Police Department has identified two male juveniles as being involved in this incident and are continuing to investigate this matter.

Today, the Salina Police Department has signed on to the 30x30 Pledge – a series of low and no-cost actions policing agencies can take to improve the representation and experiences of women in law enforcement. 

The activities help policing agencies assess the current state of a department with regard to gender equity, equality and identify factors that may be driving any disparities and develop and implement strategies and solutions to eliminate barriers and advance women in policing. These actions address recruitment, assessment, hiring, retention, promotion, and agency culture.

The pledge is the foundational effort of the 30x30 Initiative – a coalition of police leaders, researchers, and professional organizations who have joined together to advance the representation and experiences of women in all ranks of policing across the United States. The 30x30 Initiative is affiliated with the Policing Project at NYU School of Law and the National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives (NAWLEE).

The ultimate goal of the 30x30 Initiative is to reach 30 percent of women in police recruit classes by 2030, and to ensure policing agencies are truly representative of the jurisdiction the agency serves. While 30x30 is focused on advancing women in policing, these principles are applicable to all demographic diversity, not just gender.

My wife and I are empty nesters, and our house is too big for just the two of us now. We talked about selling the house and moving into an apartment in a multi-use development with retail and restaurants that we go to several times a week. Then, in a year or so, buying a smaller house when housing prices go back down. How do you feel about this idea?

I like the idea of downsizing. My wife and I did the same kind of thing recently. But at this point, I’d say there’s about a 99% chance the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/real-estate/mortgage-calculator" target="_blank">housing</a>&nbsp;market is not going down. It has gone down two times in the last 100 years—way back during the 1930s and again in 2008. And the market snapped back fairly fast after 2008.

I don’t think the price of housing is going to go down at all anytime soon. I&nbsp;do&nbsp;believe the housing market’s rate of increase will slow down, but that still kind of defeats your premise of renting until then. I wouldn’t be opposed to you two&nbsp;buying&nbsp;a different property in the same area and just moving in, but I’m not going to tell you to go rent something right now. That would put you in a hole with the rental amount, plus the fact that&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/real-estate/cant-afford-housing-market" target="_blank">housing prices</a>&nbsp;are probably going to continue to rise, even if not at the pace they’ve risen recently.

In other words, if you rent, you’re going to lose money two different ways—with the rental amount&nbsp;and&nbsp;home prices continuing to increase. Buying high and selling high isn’t such a big deal. But buying high, and later buying higher after renting? No, I’m not doing that.

Among those initiated was&nbsp;Lainey Monnington, senior, Herington.

Jennifer Harrison, president of KU’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter and director of the Business Leadership Program and Jack Dicus Business Honors Program, presided at the May 15 ceremony. Initiates were individually recognized, presented with a certificate of membership, and invited to sign their names in the chapter register — a tradition that dates to 1912.

Mary Klayder, associate director of undergraduate studies in the Department of English and University Honors Program lecturer, was inducted as an honorary member of Phi Beta Kappa. She spoke to the grit and resiliency initiates have shown since the start of the pandemic in her address titled, “After all this…”

Leah Stein, a graduating senior in sociology who was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa in 2021, gave the student response address.

Election to Phi Beta Kappa recognizes a student’s high academic achievement while pursuing a broad and substantive liberal arts curriculum. To be eligible for consideration for membership, students must be seniors with a minimum grade-point average of 3.65 on a 4.0 scale or juniors with a minimum 3.9. The Memorial Day holiday brings with it several closings.

City of Salina and Saline County offices and most facilities will be closed Monday in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.

Additionally, there will be no Salina City Commission meeting on Monday.

The City of Salina did announce, however, that sanitation crews will be providing regularly scheduled collection, however, the landfill will close at 2 p.m. The Household Hazardous Waste facility and Salina Drive-thru Recycling Center will be closed.

What looked to be a silver splotch turned out to be gold for one Festival Medallion Quest participant.

Salina Arts &amp; Humanities announced during a news conference this afternoon that Samantha Uhler was the winner of the 2022 Festival Medallion Quest. Uhler found the medallion shortly after the Thursday morning clue was announced, said Brad Anderson, executive director of Salina Arts &amp; Humanities.

The first clue was given on the afternoon of May 18. Subsequent clues were announced at 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day. 

Uhler said she found the medallion under a yucca plant located in a brick-paved area at the southeast edge of the N. Ohio Street overpass. Uhler had an idea that the medallion was somewhere in that area, so she positioned herself there and awaited this morning's clue. 

Once she had the clue, she knew where to look: the bricks she had stared at for days.

"I knew everyone had already picked up every brick there was," Uhler said. "I wasn't too hopeful that I would find it, you know, just 'cause we haven't in the past. Usually, it's always right there and then somebody else finds it, but apparently it was my lucky day."

Uhler's boyfriend, Isaac Beckman, was a partner in the search, as well as her mother, Missy Slagle, with whom she was talking on FaceTime when she found the medallion.

The metal medallion, which was shaped like a splotch of paint, was silver on one side and multi-colored with instructions on the other and approximately two inches wide. When Uhler found it, the silver side was up, she said.

"I thought it was a piece of trash because we saw so many pieces of trash out today and the last couple of days. I wasn't sure what it was, but I was like 'oh, I can't just let that go right in front of me,' so I went ahead and picked it up and it was not a piece of trash," Uhler said and laughed.

That medallion, however, was not the original 2022 medallion. According to information from Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, Anderson discovered that the original medallion "had been lost in the environment, likely because of the rain. It was promptly replaced with the medallion that Uhler found, but this time it was left without disguise of organic matter."

Uhler receives a prize package of $1,000 in cash and $2,000 in gift certificates to be used for shopping at the River Festival 2022 Fine Art and Craft Show. Other prizes include four festival admission wristbands, a complimentary on-grounds VIP parking pass, an invitation for four to the Thursday-evening PREMIERE Art Patron party, and four river festival 2022 t-shirts.

Uhler, who is a senior at Bethany College studying business administration, said she plans to use some of the cash to purchase books for her summer school classes.

The Festival Medallion Quest serves as a countdown to the Smoky Hill River Festival. This year's festival is scheduled for June 9-12 in Salina's Oakdale Park.

Some area rainfall totals three to four inches

A Salina man was arrested early Wednesday after he allegedly threatened a female acquaintance.

Officers were called to the 100 block of W. Ellsworth at approximately 2 a.m. Wednesday for the report of a man making threats to a 35-year-old Salina woman, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning.

The woman told officers that the man, who was an acquaintance, had contacted her via social media and had threatened her.

Officers made contact with the man, who was in the backyard of the woman's residence. Hanus said the officers were able to determine that the man, identified as Colt Carter, 38, of Salina, had threatened the woman.

Hanus said Carter was arrested on the following requested charges.

Summer at the Library is here and recently Salina Public Library made a decision that will benefit the community’s youngest members. 

At its April Board of Directors meeting, SPL announced that all youth patrons (18 and younger) will have fees/fines forgiven up to $75. This includes more than 1,200 youth patrons. The move is designed to allow students to use the resources provided by the library so they can keep their learning interest and momentum up during the summer months.

“The summer months can be a difficult time for students in terms of learning and reading regression with school not in session,” Melanie Hedgespeth, Director, said. “This move gives those students more freedom and ease to use the library to help stay engaged and avoid that summer slide.”

Summer at the Library is the busiest time of the year for SPL. For the first time since the pandemic, there is a full slate of classes and programs for both youth and adult patrons. Community members can also take part in the Summer Reading program, which runs from May 20 through July 21. All it requires is reading or listening to a book(s) of their choice, fill out a book log form at the library or online and patrons are eligible to win weekly prizes. Random winners will be drawn, by age group, each week and posted to the library’s Facebook page. For more information, visit <a href="http://SalinaPublicLibrary.org">SalinaPublicLibrary.org</a>.

Salina Public Library to forgive youth patron fees, fines up to $75

Summer, fall, interterm, and spring graduates were honored on May 21 during baccalaureate worship and commencement ceremonies in Presser Hall.

Summer, fall, interterm, and spring graduates were honored on May 21 during baccalaureate worship and commencement ceremonies in Presser Hall. Amy Truhe, Campus Pastor, presided over the baccalaureate. Consistent with tradition, the baccalaureate procession started at Bethany Lutheran Church where 10 students met in the church sacristy in October of 1881 for the first classes of Bethany Academy and ended at Presser Hall.&nbsp; Gabriela Hernandez, from Wichita, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications, was the senior speaker. Cheryl Rasmussen, Bethany College Board of Directors, special speaker, spoke about choosing grit, grace, and gratitude as part of the path to one’s purpose.Elise Nelson, from Lindsborg, graduating with a Bachelor of Music Education sang “Schafe können sicher weiden” BWV 208 - J. S. Bach accompanied by Dr. Hentis van Rooyen, Assistant Professor of Sacred Music.Elizabeth Mauch, President of Bethany College, also addressed the graduates declaring, “Today is about getting to say one last time, ‘we trust you.’ We are not certain where you will go or what you will do, but we trust that you are worthwhile, responsible, and valuable to the world.” This year, faculty, staff, and members of the board of directors, celebrated the seniors with their invited family guests in a Senior Social at the Mabee Welcome Center.
