MANHATTAN – The Kansas State University animal sciences academic quadrathlon team placed second at the Midwest section of the American Society of Animal Science meeting, held March 13-14 in Lincoln and Omaha, Neb.

K-State beat 19 other teams for the runner-up finish. Members of the team include:&nbsp;

●Jessica Smallfield, Jefferson City, Mo.&nbsp;

The team placed first in written exam and second in lab practicum and quiz bowl. Eleven Midwest universities competed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In the local competition Feb. 21-24, 20 teams and 80 students participated in four events: laboratory practicum, written exam, oral presentation and quiz bowl. &nbsp;

In the laboratory practicum, the teams solve hands-on problems involving such topics as animal management and care. Each station usually involves a species, such as beef or swine; or a disciplinary area, such as physiology or meats. &nbsp;

The written exam questions involve any area related to animal science concepts and principles. Each team worked on one exam, dividing the questions as they choose. &nbsp;

In the oral presentation, students choose from a list of current topics, such as 'cultured meat,' sustainability in animal agriculture, or use of gene editing. In the quiz bowl, questions include topics relating to animal agriculture.&nbsp;

Fourth &amp; Pomeroy Associates of Clay Center has sponsored K-State’s academic quadrathlon team for 18 years, during which time more than 1,000 students have competed in the local quadrathlon.&nbsp;

ELLSWORTH COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 12:30p.m. Friday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2021 Hyundai Elantra driven by Martin Miquel Estrada, 29, Kansas City, Mo., entered the westbound rest area at I-70 and Kansas 156.

The driver did not make the required left turn. The car traveled off of the slope, and came to rest against a tree. EMS transported Estrada to the hospital in Ellsworth. The KHP did not report seat belt usage information.

TOPEKA—District Judge David Debenham will retire June 14 after serving 14 years in the 3rd Judicial District Debenham was appointed district judge in 2008. The 3rd Judicial District is Shawnee County. “It was my desire to continue our system of justice and ensure individuals appearing before the court had the opportunity for a timely and full hearing with skilled representation,” Debenham said. “I have tried to make sure all parties believe they have received a full and fair hearing, regardless of the outcome.” Debenham is a native of Abilene and a graduate of Bethany College and Washburn University Law School. Before being named judge in 2008, he practiced law for 28 years with governmental agencies as deputy attorney general and Shawnee County deputy district attorney. He is a graduate of the National College of District Attorneys Career Prosecutor course and served twice as a faculty advisor. He was a director and officer of the Kansas County and District Attorneys Association, served on the board of editors for The Kansas Prosecutor magazine, and was given the association’s lifetime achievement award in 2008.&nbsp; Debenham has served as a lecturer and instructor on criminal procedure and law. He is a member of the Topeka and Kansas Bar associations and the Kansas District Judges and American Judges associations. Debenham is the father of three adult daughters. In retirement, he plans to spend more time with his daughters, sons-in-law, and his young grandson, as well as engage in outside activities. &nbsp;&nbsp; District judges in the 3rd Judicial District are appointed through a merit selection process. State statute requires a nominating commission to accept nominations, interview nominees, and forward names of finalists to the governor, who appoints a replacement. After serving one year in office, the new judge must stand for a retention vote in the next general election to remain in the position. If retained, the incumbent will serve a four-year term.

District Judge David Debenham to retire after 14 years of service

Members of the Saline County Sheriff's Mounted Patrol and Rescue Squad are among those assisting the Nebraska State Patrol in the search for a woman who went missing last June.

Commander Bill Cooke told Salina Post today that five members of the mounted patrol are in Nebraska helping with the search.

Linda Dillard was last seen on June 16, 2021, in the rural Table Rock, Neb., area. As part of the investigation, NSP and assisting agencies have conducted multiple searches in the area where Dillard was last seen. Investigators believe Dillard may have been the victim of a crime, which led to her disappearance, according to information from the Nebraska State Patrol.

Cooke said his unit was contacted by the Nebraska State Patrol to assist with the search since part of the area being searched is somewhat rugged terrain not compatable with motorized vehicles, but easily accessible by horses.

The mounted patrol members left Wednesday and plan to remain in Nebraska through Saturday, if need be, to assist with the search, Cooke said.

“It’s always great when a community member gives back to KWU,” said Ken Oliver, vice president of Advancement and university relations. “Mike saw the great things happening at KWU, saw the engagement on campus and all of the energy surrounding Kansas Wesleyan, and he wanted to be a part of it! Salinan Money makes donation to KWU campaign

Police are continuing an investigation into a motorcycle found abandoned in the roadway in southwest Salina early this morning.

Officers were dispatched to the 2200 block of Meadowlark Lane at 2 a.m. Friday for the report of a collision. When they arrived, the found a blue 2006 Kawasaki Ninja on its side and no one around, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning. 

The ignition had been damaged and the motorcycle had cosmetic damage from striking the roadway. Damage was estimated at more than $500, Hanus said.

Police made contact with the owner, a 35-year-old Salina man, who said the motorcycle was stolen.

Hanus said it appeared that the motorcycle had been towed by a vehicle with a rope or tow strap.

By LESLIE EIKLEBERRY Salina PostPolice are continuing an investigation into a motorcycle found abandoned in the roadway in southwest Salina early this morning.Officers were dispatched to the 2200 block of Meadowlark Lane at 2 a.m. Friday for the report of a collision. When they arrived, the found a blue 2006 Kawasaki Ninja on its side and no one around, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning. The ignition had been damaged and the motorcycle had cosmetic damage from striking the roadway. Damage was estimated at more than $500, Hanus said.Police made contact with the owner, a 35-year-old Salina man, who said the motorcycle was stolen.Hanus said it appeared that the motorcycle had been towed by a vehicle with a rope or tow strap.

An Oklahoma man was arrested in Salina in the area of a John Deere Gator he allegedly stole and drove from McPherson County Thursday.

Deputies were dispatched to the area of Old Highway 40 just west of Salina just before noon Thursday for the report of a John Deere Gator driving fast on the roadway, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. 

The Gator and its driver were located and after a brief chase, the Gator broke down on the tracks near the Shady Lady Gentlemen's Club at 1540 W. Old Highway 40. The driver, identified as Joshua Baker, 34, Midwest City, Okla., jumped off and fled on foot, Soldan said. A short while later, Baker was apprehended by a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper in Salina's Lum Felton Park at the south end of the N. Broadway Boulevard viaduct.

Soldan said the 2022 Gator, valued at $22,000, was reported stolen from Prairieland Partners, 2401 Northview Road, in McPherson County. It is believed that Baker drove the Gator from that location to where it became disabled just west of Salina. The Gator had 49 miles on it, Soldan said.

Baker was arrested on the following requested charges, Soldan said.

LINDSBORG - Godspell the 1971 off-Broadway musical hit that caused a sensation and went on to become an international hit, is coming to the Burnett Center stage this Palm Sunday weekend to kick off the 2022 Messiah Festival of the Arts.

The Bethany College Theatre – Messiah Festival of the Arts production of the 2012 revised version of the musical, goes up Saturday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 10, at 3&nbsp; p.m. in Burnett Center.

Godspell was conceived by John-Michael Tebelak, who based it on the gospels of Luke and Matthew. A group of eleven individuals gather; into their midst comes Jesus, who begins to tell them stories--parables. Before long, the members of the group join in to help Him, using a combination of song, dance, pantomime, vaudeville, and the techniques of story theatre. Slowly, throughout Act One, Jesus is attempting to build a community.

Act Two begins on the same high note of fun and coming together as a community. Things begin to change, however, as the upbeat mood “[dissolves] hauntingly into the Last Supper and the Crucifixion.” Will this newly formed community be able to withstand the loss of its charismatic leader and take His “message of kindness, tolerance, and love” into the wider world?

Stephen Schwartz, the Tony Award-nominated and Grammy and Academy Award-winning composer/lyricist whose works include Wicked, Pippin, Children of Eden, and The Prince of Egypt, made his musical theatre debut with Godspell in 1971. The musical is packed with great songs:&nbsp;Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord, Learn Your Lessons Well, All for the Best, All Good Gifts, Turn Back, O Man,&nbsp;the international hit&nbsp;Day by Day,&nbsp; written by Schwartz, and the beautiful By My Side, written by Peggy Gordon and Jay Hamburger.

The revised version of Godspell reflects the changes made to the 2012 Broadway revival of the musical. According to Schwartz, the revised edition includes “slight cuts, changes, and structural reorganization.” There are some new orchestrations, and some references have been updated to better reflect “current sensibilities.” Schwartz notes that “the character names of the 2012 version have been changed to those of that Broadway cast, rather than the names of the original cast in the original version,” to help better distinguish them from the characters in the original script.

Greg LeGault, associate professor of theatre and the production’s director, stated that the selection of Godspell for the 2022 Messiah Festival of the Arts reflects this year’s festival’s theme: servant leadership.

“Who better displays the qualities attributed to a servant leader—empathy, honesty, foresight, healing, community building—than Jesus Christ?” LeGault asked. “Godspell seems a perfect fit.”

The Bethany College Theatre production features a cast of thirteen. Caleb Hildebrand (Sapulpa, Okla.) a History-Political Science and Music Major, as Jesus. Amaya Dungan (Salina) majoring in Vocal Music Performance playing the dual role of John the Baptist and Judas. The eleven disciples-in-training include Maya Herrera (Brighton, Colo.), Ben Turner (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Madison Price (Salina), Elyse Boden (Goessel), Tony Robb (Westmorland), Aubrey Larson (Russell), Carla Aguilar (Salina), Christian LaCourt (Wichita), and Addison Haiden, Gracie Gaskill, and Elise Nelson (Lindsborg).

Leslie Mangrum, assistant professor of music, is the musical director. Others lending their considerable talents to the production include Julie Holk (costumes), Eric and Michele Johnson (lights); Angela and Lauren Dolezal (choreography), John Wood and Indigo Guise (sound), and a group of talented Bethany College students and alums on set construction and painting and props.

“We are also grateful to Broadway RFD, Eric Lundstrom, and Smoky Valley High School Drama Department for their help and generosity with the production,” said LeGault.

The curtain rises on Godspell on Saturday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. and Palm Sunday, April 10, at 3 p.m. in Burnett Center on the Bethany College campus. Bethany to stage 'Godspell' on Palm Sunday weekend

2022 Match Madness declared a success!

The City of Salina this afternoon issued an update concerning the&nbsp;pedestrian crossing signals at the crosswalk on East Crawford Street near Fairdale Road. It is as follows.

The City of Salina Public Works Department has hired L&amp;S Electric LLC, to help replace the pedestrian crossing signals at the crosswalk on East Crawford Street near Fairdale Road.

The pedestrian crossing signals were damaged during the windstorm on December 15, 2021 and will need to have both the signal poles and concrete bases replaced before making it operational. Construction has already been scheduled, and staff will continue to work with the contractor during construction.

We continue to advise pedestrians to use the crosswalk located at the signalized intersection of East Crawford Street and Marymount Road for their safety until the crosswalk replacement is completed.

City provides update about E. Crawford crosswalk signals

Red flag warnings have been issued for counties in our area for Friday.

The National Weather Service in Hastings, Neb., has issued a red flag warning in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Friday that includes the following counties in our area.

Northwest winds at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph, and relative humifity as low as 13 percent are forecast.

Any fires that ignite may spread rapidly and exhibit extreme fire behavior, the weather service warned. Use extreme caution if engaging in activities that could lead to fire ignition.

NWS issues red flag warnings in our area for Friday

Jammin’ Jay Lamont, known as the Human iPod, is scheduled to perform on June 17 as part of a special Juneteenth celebration to benefit Salina's St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church.

The evening is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Great Plains Manufacturing Convention Hall at Tony’s Pizza Events Center, 800 The Midway, with a BBQ dinner. Lamont is scheduled to take the stage at 8 p.m.
