To qualify for the event, teams had to place first or second in their age bracket in their regional competition and first, second, or third in the state final. Scoring is based on turbine performance, a knowledge quiz, an instant challenge, and a presentation to judges in which the team explains its design process. Teams awarded the Judges Award at the state final were extended a special invitation by national organizers to participate in San Antonio event.

“KidWind is a fantastic hands-on opportunity that allows students to tinker and experiment with wind turbine designs. They experience the thrill of scientific discovery as their designs are validated through performance testing, and they hone their public-speaking skills as they present their turbine design to a panel of judges,” explained David Carter, Director of the Kansas Energy Program at K-State Engineering Extension.

The Kansas KidWind Challenge has grown from one regional challenge with 56 students in 2016 to six regional events with 196 student participants in 2022.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Kansas State Parks are partnering with the Kansas Public Library System to&nbsp;provide&nbsp;library patrons with daily vehicle permits&nbsp;available for checkout through December 2022. 

The daily vehicle permits provide the permit holder with admission to any of Kansas’ 28 state parks absolutely free of charge.

●Visit a participating library (see list here <a href="http://ksoutdoors.com/State-Parks/Library-Program">ksoutdoors.com/State-Parks/Library-Program</a>) and ask to checkout a “Kansas State Parks Vehicle Permit.”

●Each issued vehicle permit is valid for one day only, which will be written on the front of the permit.

●Patrons using a daily vehicle permit must display the permit in their vehicle windshield when entering a Kansas state park.

●Park permits do not need to be returned to participating libraries, they can be simply discarded once used or when the permit expires.

●The check-out process may vary at each participating library. It is up to the discretion of each library to determine how many permits may be checked out at any given time; and, how many permits each library patron may check out in total. After 20+ years we've made a very difficult decision to close our Salina store. Our last day will be Sunday June 5th.

We have a big memorial day sale coming up this weekend and then remaining inventory will be further discounted throughout the last week that we're open.

CD Tradepost in Salina closing June 5

Kansas Wesleyan’s Foundation is wrapping up another outstanding year, having raised more than $1.8 million in support of the university’s endowment. 

The foundation has helped raise the university’s endowment to $46 million.

“The entire Coyote family has stepped up these past three years,” said Ken Oliver, Foundation administrator. “We’ve seen record levels of giving, including to the endowment, and we are grateful for each and every contribution. The endowment helps ensure our university’s long-term health and the continuation of everything it means to be a Coyote.”

The year was highlighted by the inaugural Scholarship Gala, an event three years in the making. KWU raised $440,000 at the event in support of endowed scholarships. Gifts from the Franzen family, Dave Fancher ’64, the Arensman-Snyder family and numerous other alumni also helped enhance scholarship opportunities across campus.

The foundation announced that it projects to have 225 endowed scholarships this year, an increase of 20% from just five years prior.

“Endowed scholarships are just one part of the endowment’s purpose, but it’s a critical part,” said Oliver. “The generosity of our donors has helped make private education possible for countless students. We thank each and every person who has given!”

TOPEKA — An educational program that allowed more than 71,000 Kansans last summer to access museums, zoos, historic landmarks and outdoor locations for free kicked off Saturday with even more venues to help promote family engagement and keep students learning during the summer months.

The Sunflower Summer Program, which is being funded by federal COVID-19 money to offer summer enrichment activities for Kansas students, launch Saturday and run through Aug. 14.

Attractions in our area inclued the following.

●Eisenhower Presidential Library, Abilene

●Lindsborg Old Mill and Swedish Heritage Museum

During this time, adults can visit sunflowersummer.org to learn more about the program. The updated app will be available to download May 28 to phones or tablet devices. People who retained the app on their device from last summer do not need to download another copy - they will receive an electronic notice to simply update their app to the 2022 version. The app is available for both iPhone and Android users. An adult will need to register their family members and include their county and school district.

“This program helped more than 43,100 students stay engaged in learning throughout the summer months,” said Kansas Commissioner of Education Dr. Randy Watson. “It provided families a chance to bond and afforded some families the opportunity to take a vacation they otherwise wouldn’t have had the resources for. It also stimulated travel and tourism within Kansas. We heard from families that the Sunflower Summer program introduced them to new activities they hadn’t previously tried, and venues noted that the program drew summer visitors from areas of the state they usually don’t see. We’re so pleased to be able to offer Sunflower Summer again this year.”

Each Kansas child pre-K-18 years of age, as well as students in 18-21-year-old programs, and up to two accompanying adults may access a ticket voucher to each of the participating attractions in the Sunflower Summer app. Once a location has been selected, tickets can be claimed within the app. When attendees are ready to enter, the ticket can be activated and presented to the ticket taker.

After the first use, the Sunflower Summer passport (in the app) will be stamped, and the ticket will no longer be accessible.

BATON ROUGE, La. - Julia Ramos of Salina was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Ramos was initiated at Kansas State University.

Ramos is among approximately 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 under the leadership of undergraduate student Marcus L. Urann who had a desire to create a different kind of honor society: one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines. Today, the Society has chapters on more than 325 campuses in the United States, its territories and the Philippines. South winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected. Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Persons on area lakes should use caution and expect choppy conditions. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high-profile&nbsp;vehicle.

The first twister, an F3 with a track five miles long, leveled two farms between eight and five miles southwest of McPherson. 

The second was a violent F4. Its track was 25 miles long and around 440 yards wide as it tore through Marion and Chase counties. 

This second twister destroyed 10 farms. On one of the farms, every building was swept away. The second twister killed two people and injured four.

Lately, it hasn’t taken me more than a few minutes of scrolling social media to start feeling that heavy, hopeless feeling. In just one month we’ve faced the leaked Supreme Court draft revealing that we’ll likely be losing Roe v. Wade, a racist shooting in Buffalo, NY, that took the lives of ten Black people, and yesterday a shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, that has (so far) taken the lives of 19 children.&nbsp;

Everywhere we turn people are asking, “What will we do?” The tiktoks, tweets, reels and posts seem endless.

Here in Maine—thanks to some amazing foresight from past leadership—we will still have abortion rights after June, and we have leadership that is fighting for sensible gun safety legislation. However, we’re coming up on an election that could change that, so we need all hands on deck. And one thing I’ve learned is that it’s a lot easier to fight for your rights when you are feeling your power.&nbsp;

Back when I was drowning in the endlessly horrific sound bytes of the 2016 election I started a&nbsp;list of things to do to feel my personal power when the news makes me feel hopeless.&nbsp;At the time, the list was very specific. For instance, whenever a misogynist quote from then-candidate Donald Trump surfaced, I would donate a couple of dollars to Planned Parenthood. Over the last few years the list of similar action items has become more general so that it can change with the news cycle, and so I can share it with others. I hope it helps you.&nbsp;

Read and educate.&nbsp;There are so many great reading and watch lists to learn not only about the history of progressive politics and social justice, but what the future looks like as well. Get yourself a stack of books. Queue up a streaming list. Learn. And share what you learn with those around you.

Text RESIST to 50409.&nbsp;Using the resistbot to communicate with elected officials has become a go-to for me. I’ve lost track of how many letters I’ve written supporting universal healthcare, but I’ll keep writing them until it’s a reality.&nbsp;

Check Ballotpedia.org and learn about local elections.&nbsp;Sometimes it helps me to look at what we’ve won in the past, but also there is power in knowing exactly which elections are coming up as well.&nbsp;

Join a campaign.&nbsp;Once you know what’s coming up, sign up. Volunteering for a campaign is one of the most empowering things I’ve ever done, and it’s a sure fire way to make sure your voice is heard.&nbsp;

Donate money&nbsp;to a local organization that is fighting for our rights. This isn’t always possible, but it does always feel good.&nbsp;

Consider running for office.&nbsp;Go to Runforsomething.net or emergeamerica.org. (I’ve considered this a few times, but so far it’s only culminated in a playlist of campaign songs… maybe one day.)&nbsp;

Attend a local meeting, such as a town hall meeting, school board meeting or city council meeting. There’s nothing like being in the room where it happens.&nbsp;

Write a letter to the editor.&nbsp;Did you know you can do that? Anyone can.&nbsp;

Join or start a union.&nbsp;If you are already in a union, check in with your union representatives and elected officers and find out if you can do anything to help out with upcoming negotiations or actions.&nbsp;

Train the algorithm.&nbsp;When things get really hopeless I’ll spend a bit of time on social media liking very specific content to better curate my feed to things that make me feel good. At the moment, Instagram is convinced the only thing I want to see is videos of dachshunds. I mean, it isn’t wrong…&nbsp;

Turn off your phone for a bit.&nbsp;You deserve a break. Garden. Knit. Bake. Make art. But once you’ve had a moment, don’t forget to come back to the fight. We need you.&nbsp;

OPINION: When the news cycle makes you feel hopeless ...

SALINE COUNTY – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday night in Saline County.

The Saline County Sheriff’s Office requested KBI investigative assistance on Friday, May 27, at around 10:50 p.m. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team responded to the scene.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 10:20 p.m. on Friday, two deputies with the Saline County Sheriff’s Office traveled to the residence of 2708 S. Holmes Road in rural Saline County, to serve an arrest warrant to Dustin Vance, 42, of Hoisington.

The arrest warrant was issued through the Barton County District Court for the charges of rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, and contributing to a child’s misconduct.

As deputies approached the residence, they were met by Vance who exited the house onto the porch. Vance was armed with a holstered handgun. Vance did not comply with several verbal commands given by the deputies, and drew his handgun. At around 10:20 p.m., one deputy fired multiple times and struck Vance.

EMS declared Vance deceased at the residence.

At the time of the shooting, two other subjects were inside the home. A 41-year-old woman from Salina was in close proximity to the porch and was struck by one of the rounds fired. Deputies rendered aid to her, and EMS transported her to Salina Regional Health Center. She is currently in stable condition and is expected to recover from her injuries.

The KBI will conduct a thorough and independent investigation into this shooting. Once the investigation has concluded, the findings will be turned over to the Saline County Attorney for review.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information will be released at this time.
