The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce is now accepting nominations for the 2022 Class of the Salina Business Hall of Fame. 

The hall of fame was established by the chamber in 2005 "to honor prominent business leaders both past and present, which have made extraordinary contributions to Salina, earned the respect of the Salina community and exemplified the Free Enterprise System," according to a news release issued by the chamber this afternoon.

Nomination forms can be picked up at the chamber office, 120 W. Ash Street, or downloaded by clicking on the Hall of Fame quick link on the <a href="https://www.salinakansas.org/">chamber's website</a>. The deadline to submit nominations is 5 p.m. July 25.

Nominations can be made in the following categories.

• Contemporary Award – 1976-present

“The Business Hall of Fame honors the achievements of Salinans who have made outstanding contributions to the development and enhancement of Salina’s business climate and created a lasting impact on the Salina community overall,” said Eric L. Brown, chamber president and CEO. “It’s the chamber’s way of saying thank you and recognizing the men and women who have helped make Salina the community it is today.”

Both chamber members and members of the public can nominate individuals for the hall of fame.

"Nominees will be considered on the basis of several criteria which include business excellence, entrepreneurial spirit, courageous thinking and actions, inspiring leadership, community impact, positive role model, enduring accomplishments and local influence. Individuals nominated in previous years will be considered again this year," the chamber noted in the news release.

A task force will determine who is selected for the 2022 class. Those inductees will be honored during a luncheon in the fall.

Additionally, a portrait of each inductee will be on display in the Business Hall of Fame room within the chamber office.

Chamber seeks nominations for Salina Business Hall of Fame

North Central Kansas Pride is hosting PRIDE FEST: Legends 2022 in Salina June 17 and 18. 

The public is invited to start the free family weekend on June 17 at the corner of N. Santa Fe Avenue and W. Ash Street. A block party hosted by MX Lucky is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and include drag show performances, games, karaoke, and so much more. 

On June 18, PRIDE moves to Oakdale Park at the Eric Stein stage at 2 p.m. There we will enjoy more talented performances, and vendors and new PRIDE merchandise will be available. The events on both days are free to enter. Participants are encouraged to bring cash for tipping entertainment, playing games, etc. 

In order to kick off the weekend celebrations of PRIDE and JUNETEENTH Miranda Bachman, with Let’s Restore Humanity, is hosting a peaceful protest to start the block party event. Participants are asked to gather at N. Ninth Street and W. Ash Street near the City-County Building. People will gather to demonstrate against police brutality, the “Care about them both act,” and to remind the public that equal rights apply to all people, at all times.

This is the third walk to honor the late George Floyd, killed by Minneapolis police in 2019. Participants are encouraged to spread the importance of these messages by bringing signs and flags celebrating diversity and equality. The crowd will walk to the stage at N. Santa Fe Avenue/W. Ash Street to start off The PRIDE block party!

Great news! Our automated self-pay station is finally up and running and ready to be used by the public. Park visitors will now be able to purchase a daily vehicle permit, annual vehicle permit, or one-night worth of camping using the machine which takes credit card as method of payment. Currently, customers will have to swipe their card once for every item they want to purchase until a future update fixes this issue. This particular self-pay station is located at the entrance to the Langley Point Area on the south side of the reservoir. Thank you for your patience and hopefully this will make purchasing necessary permits and camping easier for everyone and help cut back on the use of paper self pay envelopes!

Kanopolis State Park self-pay station operational

Police are investigating the theft of copper wiring from a downtown Salina grain elevator complex.

Salina Police Sergeant Kyle Tonniges said this morning that sometime between 12:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, someone cut out and stole copper wire from control panels at the grain elevator complex at 300 E. Ash Street. Total loss was estimated at between $30,000 and $40,000.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a flood watch in effect from 10 p.m. Thursday through Friday morning that includes Marion County.

Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas.

Most of the watch area is already saturated from previous rain. Additional rainfall tonight could lead to new flooding concerns. Areas that see heavy rain in a short amount of time could see localized flash flooding.

Do not drive into flooded areas or go around barricades. Nearly two feet of water will carry most vehicles away. Turn around, don`t drown.

MANHATTAN – A program that develops leaders for agriculture, business and rural communities recently celebrated its newest graduates at the same time it announced the next class of participants.&nbsp;

Jill Zimmerman, president of the Kansas Agricultural and Rural Leadership program, said 27 individuals of Class XV celebrated the completion of their advanced leadership development experience during the inaugural KARL Big Event June 4 in Manhattan.&nbsp;

Class XVI, announced the same day, includes 30 Kansans who will start the two-year experience later this year.&nbsp;

“KARL identifies, prepares, and connects aspiring leaders to positively impact Kansas agriculture and rural communities, and is part of the International Association of Program for Agriculture Leadership,” Zimmerman said. “KARL grows leaders who make a difference and go on to lead in agriculture, their businesses, communities and families.”&nbsp;

Since it was first delivered in 1989, more than 450 men and women have participated in KARL and are leaders and active volunteers in the agriculture industry and rural communities.&nbsp;

This is the first time KARL has had a combined event to celebrate the graduate fellows and announce the new class associates. Event speakers included&nbsp;American Countryside&nbsp;producer Andrew McCrea and Senator Jerry Moran. &nbsp;

“On behalf of the board and all alumni of KARL, we offer our sincere congratulations to the Class XV Fellows for their accomplishment and we welcome KARL Class XVI Associates into the program,” said Doug Hofbauer, board chairman of the KARL program. “We look forward to their future work as leaders who make a difference on behalf of agriculture and rural Kansas.”&nbsp;

Each class experiences a two-year curriculum of 52 seminar days across the state of Kansas; a national study tour to Washington, D.C. and to the Gettysburg Leadership Experience at the historic battleground; a domestic study tour; and an international study tour.&nbsp;

Zimmerman said that members of Class XVI will travel to Spain for their international study tour.&nbsp;

KARL celebrates graduates, welcomes newest class

Concerns about “monkeypox” are closely tied to the eradication of smallpox. But American’s recent impression of viruses as rapidly developing variants and our immunity only lasting months do not apply to either of these members of the Poxviridae family. They are double-stranded DNA viruses while the coronaviruses are completely unrelated single-stranded RNA viruses.

I saw a survivor of smallpox in 1976 on the cobblestone streets of Macao, then a Portuguese colony across the Pearl River delta from then-British Hong Kong where I taught. The deep pock marks on his face were unmistakable. China had eradicated smallpox in the 1960s, yet his disfigurement remained from decades before. One year later, the last case of naturally occurring smallpox was diagnosed in Somalia on Oct. 26, 1977. Global eradication of smallpox was achieved by the World Health Organization where Dr. Isao Arita of Japan oversaw vaccine production from 1967 to 1979 and managed the $112 million dollars and 687 WHO workers. Affected countries provided over 200,000 local health workers and over $200 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Every high school biology class should describe Edward Jenner’s observation that milkmaids who developed the mild and temporary cowpox infection never got smallpox, a disease fatal about 30 percent of the time. Jenner took material from the cowpox lesion and scraped it on the arm of 8-year-old James Phipps on May 14, 1796. Jenner then “challenged” the young Phipps with material from a smallpox lesion (both arms) on July 1. The boy had complete immunity. The practice of immunization would eventually become widespread. &nbsp;

Some vaccines such as the injected Salk polio vaccine are “killed” viruses that present foreign materials that we respond to with antibodies. The Sabin oral vaccine is a “live” but weakened virus that is proliferated in our body, also triggering our antibody response. But the cowpox vaccination is a “similar-pathogen” vaccine, a different virus containing some of the same surface antigens to trigger our antibody production, but not causing any serious disease. The cowpox virus is a close relative of the smallpox virus. Both belong to the Orthopox genus, along with the monkeypox.

Therefore, when most of the world’s population underwent mass immunization against smallpox, we were likewise immunized against monkeypox. But when smallpox was eradicated in nature, we had to consider the very rare risks of smallpox vaccination. About one in a million died from a rare reaction to the vaccine. Vaccination of children was discontinued in the U.S. in 1971 and for hospital workers in 1976. By the 1990s, undergraduates in my college classes had no longer been vaccinated. Smallpox vaccination appears to provide immunity for a very long time. But as our young unvaccinated generation grows, so does their susceptibility to monkeypox. Fortunately, this poxvirus has mild symptoms and does not appear to be easily transmitted. But while smallpox could be eradicated because it did not have an animal reservoir, monkeypox is a zoonosis that circulates within rats and some other wildlife. Fortunately, the vaccines and drugs for smallpox are effective against monkeypox.

But why do we still have huge smallpox vaccine stocks after smallpox was eradicated? Only two labs, the CDC in Atlanta, Georgia and the Research Institute of Viral Preparations in Moscow contain remaining cultures of smallpox virus. And considerable discussion did occur about destroying those cultures. But then the U.S.S.R fell apart by 1992.

In 1969, Pres. Nixon signed a germ warfare weapons ban that over 100 other countries including the U.S.S.R. also signed. But after the fall of the U.S.S.R., Soviet military facilities were left abandoned in former Soviet countries including a germ warfare lab built in 1982 at Stepnogorsk in Kazakhstan. In the book “Scourge: The Once and Future Threat of Smallpox” by Jonathan B. Tucker and in “Bioterror,” a WGBH NOVA program broadcast in 2001, the ex-director of the lab explains how they could have killed everyone in the world 9-10 times over (including themselves). They had weaponized smallpox! While those facilities are now shut down, questions remain on whether third parties could have stolen cultures. Further details are provided by the book “Germs: Biological Weapons and America’s Secret War.”

So we have maintained vaccines and drugs for smallpox “just in case.” And now they will be useful against monkeypox should it continue to spread.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Affected countries provided over 200,000 local health workers and over $200 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Every high school biology class should describe Edward Jenner’s observation that milkmaids who developed the mild and temporary cowpox infection never got smallpox, a disease fatal about 30 percent of the time. Jenner took material from the cowpox lesion and scraped it on the arm of 8-year-old James Phipps on May 14, 1796. Jenner then “challenged” the young Phipps with material from a smallpox lesion (both arms) on July 1. The boy had complete immunity. The practice of immunization would eventually become widespread. &nbsp; Some vaccines such as the injected Salk polio vaccine are “killed” viruses that present foreign materials that we respond to with antibodies. The Sabin oral vaccine is a “live” but weakened virus that is proliferated in our body, also triggering our antibody response. But the cowpox vaccination is a “similar-pathogen” vaccine, a different virus containing some of the same surface antigens to trigger our antibody production, but not causing any serious disease. The cowpox virus is a close relative of the smallpox virus. Both belong to the Orthopox genus, along with the monkeypox. Therefore, when most of the world’s population underwent mass immunization against smallpox, we were likewise immunized against monkeypox. But when smallpox was eradicated in nature, we had to consider the very rare risks of smallpox vaccination. About one in a million died from a rare reaction to the vaccine. Vaccination of children was discontinued in the U.S. in 1971 and for hospital workers in 1976. By the 1990s, undergraduates in my college classes had no longer been vaccinated. Smallpox vaccination appears to provide immunity for a very long time. But as our young unvaccinated generation grows, so does their susceptibility to monkeypox. Fortunately, this poxvirus has mild symptoms and does not appear to be easily transmitted. But while smallpox could be eradicated because it did not have an animal reservoir, monkeypox is a zoonosis that circulates within rats and some other wildlife. Fortunately, the vaccines and drugs for smallpox are effective against monkeypox. But why do we still have huge smallpox vaccine stocks after smallpox was eradicated? Only two labs, the CDC in Atlanta, Georgia and the Research Institute of Viral Preparations in Moscow contain remaining cultures of smallpox virus. And considerable discussion did occur about destroying those cultures. But then the U.S.S.R fell apart by 1992. In 1969, Pres. Nixon signed a germ warfare weapons ban that over 100 other countries including the U.S.S.R. also signed. But after the fall of the U.S.S.R., Soviet military facilities were left abandoned in former Soviet countries including a germ warfare lab built in 1982 at Stepnogorsk in Kazakhstan. In the book “Scourge: The Once and Future Threat of Smallpox” by Jonathan B. Tucker and in “Bioterror,” a WGBH NOVA program broadcast in 2001, the ex-director of the lab explains how they could have killed everyone in the world 9-10 times over (including themselves). They had weaponized smallpox! While those facilities are now shut down, questions remain on whether third parties could have stolen cultures. Further details are provided by the book “Germs: Biological Weapons and America’s Secret War.” So we have maintained vaccines and drugs for smallpox “just in case.” And now they will be useful against monkeypox should it continue to spread.&nbsp;&nbsp;John Richard Schrock has trained biology teachers for more than 30 years in Kansas. He also has lectured at 27 universities during 20 trips to China. He holds the distinction of “Faculty Emeritus” at Emporia State University.

Ransomware attack strikes City of Ellsworth

The memory of a loved one has inspired the “Drop your Drawers” Underwear Drive to collect new, unopened underwear for all members of the family. 

On June 1, 2019, Shawn Hynes was killed in a car accident in rural Saline County. To honor his memory, his family reflected on how they liked to tease him about his refusal to buy his own new underwear and instead waiting on his mom to gift them on birthdays and Christmas, even at 40 years old!

The first event was held in 2021 and resulted in more than 350 packages and 2,650 pairs of underwear being collected and gifted to Salina Shares for distribution. 

“At Salina Shares, we call it (underwear) a ‘dignity item.’ It can be embarrassing to ask for, and because it is such a personal item, most people prefer not to purchase it secondhand,” said&nbsp;Debbie Rivers, founder and director of Salina Shares.

Last year’s haul of underwear was distributed in a variety of ways including directly to the men, women, and children served in the day-to-day operations of Salina Shares. More than 150 children were recipients at Christmas when their families took part in the Salina Shares Christmas Store, and still, many more packages were gifted to Salina elementary schools and Opportunity Now.

All sizes of men’s, women’s, boy’s, and girl’s underwear are appreciated, although, men’s sizes 28/30 and 32/34 were depleted first last year as those sizes fit both teens and adults. Donations can be dropped off until June 30 at participating businesses including Culligan Water, Edward Jones (S. Ohio), Equity Bank, Firefly Salon, First Bank Kansas (S. Ninth and Santa Fe locations), Hair Affaire, Heartland Worship Center, Les Groom, On the Pot, Sanity Boutique, and Soggy Dog Salon.

“We are so grateful for this ‘Drop your Drawers’ collection. It turns our attention to what so many of us take for granted and affirms the dignity of all the recipients,” Rivers said.

More rain overnight

Salina's DVACK is among the organizations in the state that will receive nearly $4.7 million in federal grants to support survivors of sexual and domestic violence.

Governor Laura Kelly today announced $4,697,713 has been awarded to Kansas sexual and domestic violence survivor support programs through the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act administered by the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA).

●A $131,138 FVPSA Domestic Violence grant

●An $80,602 FVPSA Sexual Violence grant

“This funding will help sexual and domestic abuse survivors access the support and resources they need – no matter where they are in the state,” Kelly said. “We will continue using every tool we have to keep Kansans safe and healthy.”

The funding will assist sexual assault survivor support centers with transitioning to virtual/remote support services and increase their capacity to offer services to sexual assault survivors, according to a news release from the governor's office. The funds will also go toward measures to increase access to COVID-19 testing, vaccines, and mobile health units to promote public health, the release noted. 

DVACK, the Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas, supports survivors of domestic and sexual violence, stalking, teen dating violence, elder abuse, and human trafficking. The organization serves Cloud, Dickinson, Ellsworth, Jewell, Lincoln, Mitchell, Ottawa, Republic, Saline, and Washington counties.

“Jacob has strong relationships throughout Saline and Ottawa Counties,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“He is passionate about supporting his community and has the diverse experience necessary to serve as a judge.”

Peterson has been an attorney at Clark, Mize, &amp; Linville, Chartered, since being admitted to the bar in 2012, focusing on civil litigation and healthcare. He is a member of the Defense Research Institute, the Kansas Bar Association, the American Health Law Association, and the Kansas Association of Defense Counsel, and formerly served as President of the Saline-Ottawa County Bar Association. In addition to his professional associations, Peterson was involved in his local community as an attorney and law student through Leadership Salina, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Crimestoppers, and the Salina Child Care Association. He earned his law degree from Washington University School of Law in 2012 and resides in Saline County with his wife and two children.

“It is a humbling opportunity to serve as a district court judge,”&nbsp;Peterson said.&nbsp;“A judge must understand, appreciate, and live up to the responsibility that comes with such a position. I am eager and prepared to begin my service on the bench.”

District court judges in the 28th Judicial District are appointed by the Governor and selected from nominees chosen by a district nominating commission. Following an initial retention vote, judges in nominating commission districts are subject to retention elections every four years.

The other nominees selected by the district nominating commission were Amy Taylor Norton and W. Brad Sutton.

Salina's Jacob Peterson to fill vacancy in 28th Judicial District

NATRONE COUNTY, WY—One of three inmates who escaped Friday from a jail in southwest Missouri is in custody in Wyoming.

Christopher Blevins, 37, was booked just before 1p.m. Wednesday, according to online jail records.

Just after 1:30p.m.&nbsp; Sunday, the Wallace County Kansas Sheriff’s Office received a report of a missing vehicle in the 400 block of North Gardner Street in Sharon Springs, according to Sheriff Marshall Unruh.

A local search for the missing vehicle was begun. The Wallace County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a suspicious red or maroon colored GMC Yukon that had been driving around Sharon Springs earlier that day and that it was now parked north of the 27-40 Store in front of the Welding Shop.

Authorities determined the vehicle was stolen out of Saline County Kansas. When the Saline County Sheriff’s office was contacted they stated that the person believed to have stolen the GMC Yukon was an escaped inmate out of Missouri identified as Blevins.

Wallace County Deputies were able to get video evidence of a man and woman&nbsp; associated with the GMC Yukon and confirmed that it was Christopher Allen Blevins who had escaped from the Barry Missouri County Jail on June3.

Wallace County Deputies then contacted the Barry County Jail in Missouri and learned Blevins had escaped with two others but that the U.S. Marshal's service were actively seeking the three escapees. The U.S. Marshal's service had reason to believe the three inmates had separated immediately after their escape as they had tracked one escapee to Arkansas and the other was still located in Missouri.

The Wallace County Sheriff’s Office was given the identity of the female party who was with Blevins. The U.S. Marshal's service believes the couple headed to Colorado as soon as they left Sharon Springs. The Wallace County Sheriff’s Office is seeking arrest warrants for the couple for the theft of the Wallace County Vehicle. As of June 8, the vehicle had not been recovered.

The U.S. Marshal's service does not believe the other two inmates were ever in Kansas. Marshals are working to get them apprehended again as soon as possible, according to Unruh.

Corps of Engineers warns of floating debris on Kanopolis

The nearly year-old communications tower at the southeast corner of the Salina Municipal Court was getting an upgrade today. 

The microwave component was being added to the tower that will enable local first responders to communicate with each other even if the statewide system goes down, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The tower was erected late in July of 2021 as a part of the city and county emergency communication project.

Sometime between noon Saturday and 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, someone cut the lock off of a storage unit at KO Storage, 3335 S. Ninth Street, and stole a number of items, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

An inventory of the unit's contents was still being conducted by the owner as of this morning, however, it is known that the following items were taken, Forrester said.

●Other miscellaneous power tools and computer equipment

Total loss to this point was estimated at $8,400.

Salina man out at least $8,400 in storage unit burglary

CLOUD COUNTY—One person was injured in a construction zone accident just after 8a.m.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Peterbilt semi driven by Aaron Michael Parsons, 29,&nbsp;Mondamin, Iowa, was northbound on U.S. 81 two miles south of Bell Road in the construction zone.

A private vehicle transported&nbsp;Zimmerling to the Cloud County Health Center for treatment of minor injuries. The driver was not injured and properly restrained, according to the KHP.
