According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.2 magnitude earthquake struck northeast of Hope at 3:55 p.m. Sunday. It was centered just south of 1000 Avenue between Rain Road and Quail Road.

Small earthquake shakes part of Dickinson County Sunday

Margaret Sanger founded the birth control movement and Planned Parenthood. Born in 1879, Margaret Louise Higgins was the sixth of 11 children. She watched her mother die at age 50 after 18 pregnancies. She married architect William Sanger in 1902 and worked as a young nurse in New York. She had compassion for the many women, often migrants from Europe, who knew that another baby meant more hunger in their family. Those women were poor, without any method to prevent pregnancy except abstinence. And Sanger worked under a male-doctor dominated healthcare system that would not allow advising married mothers to “just say no.”

Sanger wrote brochures describing ways to prevent pregnancy and discussing gonorrhea and syphilis. She mailed them to the poor community, violating federal statutes for distributing “literature of illegal character.” Her actions eventually changed public opinion and postal censorship soon ended.

Sanger fought for decades to get contraceptives approved. And she secured funding for the research that led to the birth control pill. In spite of being demonized by anti-abortion groups today, Sanger was opposed to abortions. She had seen far too many deaths in her early nursing work that were due to back street abortions. In “Woman and the New Race,” Sanger wrote: “while there are cases where even the law recognizes an abortion as justifiable if recommended by a physician, I assert that the hundreds of thousands of abortions performed in America each year are a disgrace to civilization.”

In her book “Family Limitation” Sanger wrote: “no one can doubt that there are times when an abortion is justifiable but they will become unnecessary when care is taken to prevent conception. This is the only cure for abortions.” Simply, with good sex education and available contraception, Sanger believed there would be no unwanted pregnancies and therefore no widespread need for abortion.

Sanger succeeded in making contraceptives legal and available. She witnessed science move forward.

In 1923, scientists Allen and Daisy of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis isolated estrogen in mice and rats and determined it was produced in the ovaries. By the 1940s, researchers discovered how other hormones (follicle stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin) controlled the typical menstrual cycle.

Three researchers in Europe first synthesized the male hormone testosterone in 1935.

Tijo and Levan at the University of Lund, Sweden, determined that normal females have XX chromosomes and normal males have XY and published their research in 1956.

Meanwhile, John Money at the Johns Hopkins Psychohormonal Research Unit studied enough patients to realize that there was a separate feeling of maleness or femaleness that was realized by age six that was separate from sexual attraction after puberty. Money pulled a term from language studies and 1955 saw the first use of “gender” for this feeling of masculine or feminine identity. It was a brain difference. And sometimes it did not match chromosomes or anatomy.

But when did this brain difference develop? When Roger Gorski at U.C.L.A. injected testosterone into a pregnant rat, the resulting female babies grew up acting like males. Gorski located a region in these female rat brains that resembled male, not female brains. Dick Swaab and his team in the Netherlands then located this brain difference in male and female human brains in 1985.

Margaret Sanger had died in 1966 at age 87, a few months after the U.S. Supreme Court decision Griswold v. Connecticut ruled that birth control was legal for married couples. She had every reason to believe that all children in the future would be wanted and loved.&nbsp; —That sex education would become widespread. —That the many solid discoveries by science that would come later would provide for an educated citizenry who intelligently planned their families. And the limited need for abortions would only entail medical or social issues such as rape or incest.

Science succeeded. But society failed. There is little to no modern sex education describing our advanced understanding gained in these last fifty years.

We now live under the tyranny of the ignorant where many states have science-ignorant legislators and governors who know nothing beyond the simple anatomy of the 1800s.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

EDUCATION FRONTLINES: Tyranny of the ignorant

MANHATTAN — All nature-loving Kansans have likely had one common lifetime experience — crossing paths with ticks. Many may wonder what to do when one is found on the body and how to reduce the likelihood of attracting them in the first place. &nbsp;

Kansas State University extension horticultural entomologist Raymond Cloyd said a tick’s primary role in the ecosystems is as a food source for vertebrates and other organisms.&nbsp;

“Ticks are a part of nature’s balance in our ecosystem and are commonly found in vegetative growth,” Cloyd said. “Because of all the rain that we’ve had, the environmental conditions have created conducive habitats for many ticks.”&nbsp;

He said ticks thrive in moist, humid conditions and can be found from spring through fall. &nbsp;

“If we start having dry, hot weather, that will likely decrease the tick population,” Cloyd said.&nbsp;

“Ticks reside in grassy areas near the soil and then they latch on to a host when they go by. The females need a blood meal in order to produce eggs,” Cloyd said. &nbsp;

To avoid picking up ticks, Cloyd offers the following tips:

●When in nature, avoid unmanaged areas, instead opting to stay on the paths.

●Apply repellants that contain 30% DEET.

●Tuck your jeans inside white socks when going on hikes so ticks are easy to spot.&nbsp;

Once arriving home, Cloyd advised removing clothes immediately and doing tick checks. He also encouraged people to put their clothes in the dryer at the highest setting to kill the ticks. &nbsp;

“Seed ticks are hard to spot because they are early in the larval stage of life, which is why we recommend taking a shower and doing a close check of your body when you come in from the outdoors,” Cloyd said. &nbsp;

If one finds a tick on their body that hasn’t latched on, Cloyd said to kill it by firmly squishing the tick to keep it from spreading to someone else in the house. &nbsp;

“It is important to identify the type of tick it is, but if it hasn’t latched on to the body, you should be okay,” Cloyd said. He added that most ticks will be found on the body below the shoulder.&nbsp;

However, if the tick has attached to the body, Cloyd said it is important to carefully remove the tick and then put it in a sealed bag so it can be identified, and go to the doctor’s office for evaluation.&nbsp;

Cloyd’s advised using tweezers to remove the tick.&nbsp;

“Put the tweezers as close as you can to the skin where the head of the tick is and then gently lift up as you move the tweezers back and forth,” Cloyd said. “Take the tick and go straight to the doctor’s office because they can prescribe treatments and intervene before the infection spreads in the body.” &nbsp;

He stressed the importance of identifying the tick type because specific varieties of ticks carry different diseases. &nbsp;

“Most of the ticks we have in Kansas are associated with some type of disease. You’ve got to take ticks seriously, especially if they become embedded in the skin,” Cloyd said.&nbsp;

Tick check: Wet spring creates ideal conditions for pesky parasite

By EIAN PRACHT Smoky View 4-H Club reporter On June 19, the Smoky View 4-H club held its June club meeting at the Salemsborg Fellowship Center.&nbsp;

During the meeting, members decided on the theme of summer activities and sports for a donation basket. The basket will be given to the Tri-Rivers Fair Board Silent Auction.

After the theme was decided, Hensli Lofdahl and Brynna Anderson talked about their experiences at 4-H Discovery Days. Discovery Days is a camp where 4-H members learn about careers they are interested in.

During announcements, 4-H club leader Henry Littich congratulated member Acacia Pracht on winning the State Project Award under the reading project. 4-H members write a Project Award Application on a specific project, which is then judged. If the application reaches the state level it may be selected as the State Project Award winner. There is only one recipient of this award in each project category.&nbsp;

Next, Kenzie Isaacson demonstrated how to use a woodburning tool to create a hummingbird design. Bristol Isaacson presented how to make diamond dot art using an example of a butterfly that she had made.

Then Eddie Littich led the club in singing Take Me Out To The Ballgame.&nbsp; Emma Littich led recreation with a dancing game.

The club will meet again at&nbsp;4 p.m. on July 17&nbsp;at the Salemsborg Fellowship Center.&nbsp;

Smoky View 4-H Club congratulates State Project award winner

With scattered rain showers streaking through Kansas, farmers are not only cutting wheat when they can, but also dedicating manpower to spraying wheat stubble to address weed emergence.

Harvest is stop-and-go in northern Barton County for Dean Stoskopf, due to random sprinkles and equipment trouble. Despite the delay, results near Hoisington are better than expected with yields ranging from 40 to 65 bushels per acre.

A challenging growing season was topped by late rains that filled kernels, resulting in both higher protein — ranging from 11 to 14 percent — and heavy test weights. Prior to the mid-harvest rain showers, test weights were averaging from 63 to 65 pounds per bushel. Now, during the second half of harvest, test weights are still adequate, but have fallen to 60 to 62 pounds per bushel.

John Hildebrand was all but 50 acres done with harvest before getting rained out on Saturday night near Stafford. Yields are far lower than average due to the tremendously dry growing season, but higher than initially estimated due to five or six inches of rain that arrived in June. Test weights remain good with the lowest at 59 pounds per bushel up to 63.8 pounds per bushel.

“Harvest is a little better than expected, but we weren’t expecting much,” Hildebrand said. “We may have not great stands, but what stands we did have filled out and had heavy berries.”

Hildebrand said Bob Dole, a variety developed by Kansas State University and released by AgriPro/Syngenta, was a stand-out, due to its taller height. In some years, a taller wheat variety could be a hindrance, but in this dry year when a lot of wheat was extremely short, it was a blessing. Paul Penner, who farms near Hillsboro in Marion County, didn’t get rained out over the weekend and continued plugging away on the combine. His harvest results this year were dictated by more than moisture conditions, as uncontrolled volunteer wheat in the area spread Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV) across boundaries.

“It’s a mixed bag this year,” Penner said. “We’ve got some wheat that is doing pretty good — for this dry year — and the rest of it is poor due to WSMV.”

Fields that were not impacted by WSMV are yielding around 50 bushels per acre, with test weights as high as 62 pounds per bushel. Affected fields, on the other hand, are yielding in the mid-20s bushels per acre and test weights as low as 53 pounds per bushel.

Syngenta’s SY Monument is performing well in wheat planted into soybean stubble, but Penner and his neighbors are disappointed with the susceptibility of other varieties to WSMV. They are watching research programs carefully for new varieties adapted to their region with better resistance packages and asking their friends and neighbors to pay close attention to controlling volunteer wheat this fall.

Sunflower artists raise at least $3,500 for Ukrainian refugee relief

Let’s go to the disc golf capital of the world. We could travel around the globe looking for such a designation, or we could go directly to… Emporia, Kansas.&nbsp;

Today we’ll learn more about a remarkable business in Emporia which, in many ways, has made its community the center of the disc golf universe.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Last week we learned about Dynamic Discs, the disc golf products company that was founded by Jeremy Rusco in Emporia.&nbsp;

Doug Bjerkaas is the president of Dynamic Discs today. Bjerkaas is an Illinois native who had a career in higher education administration and was playing disc golf for fun.&nbsp;

In 2007, Bjerkaas was living in Denver and attended the disc golf Frontier Open in Hays.&nbsp;&nbsp;He bought some Dynamic Discs t-shirts out of the back of Rusco’s truck. “I was very impressed with how approachable and friendly he was,” Bjerkaas said.&nbsp;

As a player, Bjerkaas was sponsored by Dynamic Discs, as was his daughter in later years. After serving as a tournament director for Dynamic Discs, he joined the company in 2016 and moved up through the ranks to become president in 2021. Through the years, he has seen the remarkable growth of the company and sport.&nbsp;

“Our purpose statement is simple: Dynamic Discs enriches lives through disc golf,” Bjerkaas said.&nbsp;

What has caused the sport of disc golf to grow? “It really is inclusive,” he said. “When I go to the course, I see families with elementary school kids up to a couple of ladies in their 80s,” he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Regardless of your skill level, you can play with other people and have fun.”&nbsp;

“The athletic part of the competition takes about 5% of your time,” Bjerkaas said. “The rest of the time, you’re talking and walking the course. You’re building great relationships and friendships while getting exercise outside. It has all the benefits of playing golf, but at a fraction of the cost.”&nbsp;

It is also less expensive for a community to install a disc golf course. This means there may be several courses in larger cities, but it has also made it possible for disc golf courses to be installed in rural places such as Olpe, population 519; Neosho Rapids, population 229; Admire, population 140; and Elmdale, population 40 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

“We want to do anything we can to grow the sport,” Bjerkaas said.&nbsp;

With the support of Dynamic Discs, Emporia has hosted the professional, amateur and junior world championships multiple times. “We average participants from 45 of the 50 states, including Alaska and Hawaii,” Bjerkaas said. “We’ve had players from Japan, Thailand, New Zealand, Australia and more.”&nbsp;

The company hosts its own Dynamic Discs Open in Emporia each April, and sponsors other tournaments as well as individual top players across the nation.&nbsp;

“If you have 2,500 people come to an event in a big city like Denver or Kansas City, it’s not even noticed,” Bjerkaas said. “But if we bring 2,500 to Emporia, that’s 10% growth.”&nbsp;

“(Emporia) embraces guests,” he said, noting that signs reading ‘Welcome disc golfers’ can be found prominently posted during tournaments.&nbsp;

“After a recent tournament, we were told, `Never has a town been so welcoming and hospitable as Emporia, Kansas,’” Bjerkaas said. “We’re big enough to have amenities but still have small town friendliness.”&nbsp;

Emporia’s position along I-35 in the center of the country has helped with shipping and logistics.&nbsp;

Dynamic Discs has grown from Rusco’s college eBay hobby to a company that employs more than 90 people. “It has really exploded.&nbsp;&nbsp;We sold more than 3 million discs last year,” Bjerkaas said, noting that may be why some people have described Emporia as the Disc Golf Capitol of the World and Disc Golf Disneyland.&nbsp;

 </figure>In 2007, Bjerkaas was living in Denver and attended the disc golf Frontier Open in Hays.&nbsp;&nbsp;He bought some Dynamic Discs t-shirts out of the back of Rusco’s truck. “I was very impressed with how approachable and friendly he was,” Bjerkaas said.&nbsp;As a player, Bjerkaas was sponsored by Dynamic Discs, as was his daughter in later years. After serving as a tournament director for Dynamic Discs, he joined the company in 2016 and moved up through the ranks to become president in 2021. Through the years, he has seen the remarkable growth of the company and sport.&nbsp;“Our purpose statement is simple: Dynamic Discs enriches lives through disc golf,” Bjerkaas said.&nbsp;What has caused the sport of disc golf to grow? “It really is inclusive,” he said. “When I go to the course, I see families with elementary school kids up to a couple of ladies in their 80s,” he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Regardless of your skill level, you can play with other people and have fun.”&nbsp;“The athletic part of the competition takes about 5% of your time,” Bjerkaas said. “The rest of the time, you’re talking and walking the course. You’re building great relationships and friendships while getting exercise outside. It has all the benefits of playing golf, but at a fraction of the cost.”&nbsp;It is also less expensive for a community to install a disc golf course. This means there may be several courses in larger cities, but it has also made it possible for disc golf courses to be installed in rural places such as Olpe, population 519; Neosho Rapids, population 229; Admire, population 140; and Elmdale, population 40 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;“We want to do anything we can to grow the sport,” Bjerkaas said.&nbsp;With the support of Dynamic Discs, Emporia has hosted the professional, amateur and junior world championships multiple times. “We average participants from 45 of the 50 states, including Alaska and Hawaii,” Bjerkaas said. “We’ve had players from Japan, Thailand, New Zealand, Australia and more.”&nbsp;The company hosts its own Dynamic Discs Open in Emporia each April, and sponsors other tournaments as well as individual top players across the nation.&nbsp;“If you have 2,500 people come to an event in a big city like Denver or Kansas City, it’s not even noticed,” Bjerkaas said. “But if we bring 2,500 to Emporia, that’s 10% growth.”&nbsp;“(Emporia) embraces guests,” he said, noting that signs reading ‘Welcome disc golfers’ can be found prominently posted during tournaments.&nbsp;“After a recent tournament, we were told, `Never has a town been so welcoming and hospitable as Emporia, Kansas,’” Bjerkaas said. “We’re big enough to have amenities but still have small town friendliness.”&nbsp;Emporia’s position along I-35 in the center of the country has helped with shipping and logistics.&nbsp;Dynamic Discs has grown from Rusco’s college eBay hobby to a company that employs more than 90 people. “It has really exploded.&nbsp;&nbsp;We sold more than 3 million discs last year,” Bjerkaas said, noting that may be why some people have described Emporia as the Disc Golf Capitol of the World and Disc Golf Disneyland.&nbsp;For more information, go to&nbsp;<a href="http://www.dynamicdiscs.com/" target="_blank">www.dynamicdiscs.com</a>.&nbsp;It’s time to leave the disc golf capitol of the world. MANHATTAN, Kan. —&nbsp;Bats are interesting creatures that can squeeze through small spaces, including a dime-sized hole in your house. &nbsp;

“This time of year, our extension offices and I, directly, get a fair number of calls from homeowners that have bats in their attic or house and that is a concern,” said Drew Ricketts, K-State Research and Extension wildlife specialist.&nbsp;

When a bat is found in a home, the first thought is to call a pest control company, he said.&nbsp;

“Many people reach out to a pest control company and what they hear is (the company) cannot remove the bats right now because there are probably pups (baby bats) in the attic and they need to wait until fall to do that,” Ricketts said. &nbsp;

Adult bats can fly, but the pups cannot, which can be a problem if removal is attempted during this time of year. “There is no way for the pups to get out when the adults have been excluded, and since the pups can’t fly, they will end up dying and causing an even bigger health risk,” Ricketts said.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to Ricketts, bats can create several health risks: “When bats are in the attic, feces and parasites, including bat bugs, are the concern. The feces have a fungal disease that can lead to a respiratory illness in people. Bat bugs, which are like bed bugs, can bite though they probably won’t transfer a disease.” &nbsp;

The greatest concern, he added, is bats in the living areas. Bats can transmit rabies to people without them knowing because of the size of their mouth. “Everyone in the house needs to be able to answer the question ‘Did I come into contact with the bat?’ and if everyone in the house cannot answer that question as a definite no, then the bat needs to be collected and tested for rabies,” Ricketts said. Call the KDHE Epidemiology Hotline at 877-427-7317 or the local county health department to determine if a bat should be collected for testing, or if someone may have come into contact with a bat that wasn’t collected.&nbsp;

Since removal is difficult this time of year, Ricketts suggests next steps during mid-August through October once pups can fly:&nbsp;

●Prevent entry through vents and similar openings with metal wire screen that has ¼ inch or smaller openings.

●Seal other entryways with black expanding foam. &nbsp;

If a pest control company is used, they will take care of removing the bats and putting in the permanent measures for exclusion. &nbsp;
