This month, we’re exploring the impact of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/freeexpressionawards/" target="_blank">2022 Free Expression Awards</a>&nbsp;honorees, including the founders of Stop AAPI Hate: San Francisco State University Professor Russell Jeung and advocacy group leaders Cynthia Choi of Chinese for Affirmative Action and Manjusha P. Kulkarni of the AAPI Equity Alliance. These are the stories of how the First Amendment advocates we’re honoring have used their voices to uplift others.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/freeexpressionawards/#watch" target="_blank">Watch the Free Expression Awards live</a>&nbsp;at 8 p.m. EDT on Thursday.

This is more than a story of fear, ignorance and hate. It’s a story of solidarity, resilience and justice.

March 2020 saw the beginning of a rapid spread in the U.S. of COVID-19, which originated in Wuhan, China. Along with it came a dramatic escalation of anti-Asian rhetoric, discrimination and incidents of hate.

Within weeks, leaders in Asian American and Pacific Islander communities came together to document, report and share these stories – and spur a movement for change.

On March 19,&nbsp;Cynthia Choi, Russell M. Jeung&nbsp;and&nbsp;Manjusha P. Kulkarni&nbsp;formed Stop AAPI Hate to document the harassment and hatred and to combat racism through education and advocacy, using First Amendment freedoms to defend the rights of millions of Americans.

Stop AAPI Hate collected reports of more than 650 incidents of hate in its first week.

“The more we have data about what’s actually happening to people, the more we can make a case that we need a response,” said co-founder Cynthia Choi.

Supported by Stop AAPI Hate’s data and advocacy resources, communities began to respond. Santa Clara County, Calif., where nearly 40 percent of residents are Asian American, was among the first. On April 7, it passed a resolution denouncing xenophobia and committing to combat hate crimes.

By April 15, Stop AAPI Hate had recorded nearly 1,500 incidents of hate ranging from harassment to physical attacks. Unreported incidents likely make the true total much higher.

Over the next year, the movement grew as Asian American, Pacific Islander and allied communities pointed to Stop AAPI Hate’s work and joined in petitioning for action.

In March 2021, 12-year-old&nbsp;Mina Fedor&nbsp;and friends organized a Stop AAPI Hate rally in Berkeley, one of several protests in the San Francisco area. “They are disappointed that this nation doesn’t live up to its ideals,” said Stop AAPI Hate co-founder Russell Jeung.

The students went on to launch AAPI Youth Rising, a student-led coalition that petitions for education about Asian American history.

That same month, in Virginia, the student government at the College of William and Mary passed a Stop AAPI Hate resolution, condemning attacks on Asian and Pacific Islander Americans. Student Sen.&nbsp;Sailor Miao&nbsp;said that although the college’s student assembly may not have national influence, it is important to support the local AAPI community.

In May 2021, after citywide demonstrations, the city council in Manhattan Beach, Calif., unanimously passed an anti-AAPI hate resolution affirming support for the AAPI community and encouraging people who experienced bias or hate to report anonymously to Stop AAPI Hate.

The same month, a federal hate crimes act, with particular emphasis on support for Asian Americans experiencing increased hate during the COVID-19 pandemic, was signed into law.

In its first year, Stop AAPI Hate had recorded more than 6,500 incidents of hate – and more than 100 local, state and federal governing bodies had enacted laws or resolutions to counter xenophobia.

Stop AAPI Hate’s work publishing information about anti-Asian bias, assembling in support of AAPI communities and petitioning for action has continued to shift the story from one of hate to one of justice by uplifting Asian American and Pacific Islander voices.

By late 2021, Stop AAPI Hate’s database of anti-Asian incidents reached 10,000. Because of its leaders’ free and fearless expression, more than 250 communities had worked to counter the hatred with supportive statements and actions.

The group continues to petition for systemic solutions to discrimination that Asian Americans have faced for decades . It celebrates and teaches diversity, meeting each moment of hate with a movement of people speaking up to protect freedoms for all.

FIRST 5: How Stop AAPI Hate inspired, empowered action 

McPHERSON – Priceless, one-of-a-kind classic automobiles will be on display during the upcoming 22nd&nbsp;annual C.A.R.S. Club Motoring Festival at&nbsp;McPherson&nbsp;College.

The event is scheduled for 9 a.m.-2 p.m. May 7. 

A few of the cars expected on the field this year include the 1938 Buick Y-Job concept car, the 1961 Mako Shark Corvette concept, and the 1970 Pontiac Pegasus concept all from the General Motors collection.

Each year, the student-run car show attracts rare vehicles from across the country and expects 350 to 400 vehicles to be on display throughout the campus grounds this year. Other special cars expected at this year’s event include a 1941 Chevrolet Fleetline from Rad Rides by Troy, a 1937 Cord 812 Sportsman, a 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Coupe, Aston-Martin DB2, and a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster.

“The car show is the ultimate celebration of automotive work where future automotive restorers and current masters within the industry meet,” Wyatt Miceli, a senior and student leader of this year’s car show, said. “The show is entirely student-operated and welcomes all marques across a variety of price ranges. Every year, both students and professionals show off their skills and get to enjoy a great day surrounded by friends, family, and community.”

The weekend will also celebrate the dedication of The Paul Russell &amp; Company Center for Automotive Research in Miller Library on the college campus. The dedication will take place on Friday and the space will be open to tour on Saturday.

Along with a wide variety of classic automobiles, the event will also feature entertainment provided by the&nbsp;McPherson&nbsp;College Steel Drum Band and Jazz Band as well as the&nbsp;McPherson&nbsp;High School Jazz Band. The Model-T Build Team will demonstrate at 2 p.m., just prior to the awards ceremony. Building tours of Templeton Hall, home of the McPherson the College Automotive Restoration Program, will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is no charge for spectators. Food trucks will also be available on campus to purchase food and beverages.

Car enthusiasts are encouraged to participate in a Cruise-in on May 6 on Main Street in&nbsp;McPherson&nbsp;beginning at 6 p.m. There is no registration or entry fee required for this event, which serves as a sneak peek at what will be on the show field and an opportunity for any car or motorcycle owner to display their rides in an informal show.

Fred, Roger’s friend and neighbor, believes that the women are all hot for Roger. While there is competition among the women, it is only about their cooking skills. But Fred convinces Roger otherwise, with hilarious results.

Three of Kansas Wesleyan’s music ensembles will perform in a single concert Tuesday in Sams Chapel. 

The event, featuring the String Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble, begins at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public at no charge.&nbsp;

The Jazz Ensemble, directed by Steve Lueth, will swing with two pieces from the jazz standards canon Bags’ Groove by Milt Jackson and Angel Eyes by Matt Dennis, along with New Orleans Jumbo-Gumbo by Mike Carubia.

The Wind Ensemble, conducted by Department Chair James McAllister, will end the concert&nbsp;with a selection of pieces that run the gamut of possibilities for winds. Featured will be Henry Fillmore’s march Americans We; a medley of selections from The Phantom of the Opera&nbsp;by Andrew Lloyd Webber; and Reverberations, a contemporary fanfare by Brian Balmages.

KWU String Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble concert Tuesday

The Saline County Sheriff's Office will join hundreds of law enforcement agencies across the country Saturday for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's 22nd National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

According to Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Sean Kochanowski, sheriff's office personnel will be joined by representatives from Interim Healthcare and Hospice for the collection, which is scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Salina Senior Center, 245 N. Ninth Street.

The bi-annual event offers free, anonymous disposal of unneeded medications.

“Disposing of unneeded medications can help prevent drugs from being misused,” said DEA Administrator Anne Milgram. “Overdose deaths continue to hit tragic record highs. I encourage everyone to dispose of unneeded prescription medications now.”

For more than a decade, DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day has helped Americans easily rid their homes of unneeded medications—those that are old, unwanted, or no longer needed—that too often become a gateway to addiction. Working in close partnership with local law enforcement, Take Back Day has removed more than 15 million pounds of medication from circulation since its inception. These efforts are directly in line with DEA’s priority to combat the overdose epidemic in the United States.

Drug overdose deaths are up 16 percent in the last year, claiming more than 290 lives every day, the DEA noted.  According to a report published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, a majority of people who misused a prescription medication obtained the medicine from a family member or friend.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that in the United States, more than 106,000 people died as the result of a drug overdose in the 12-month period ending November 2021, marking the most drug-related deaths ever recorded, with opioid-related deaths accounting for 75 percent of all overdose deaths.

For a number of people, the upcoming Mid-America Performing Arts Alliance concert in Salina may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The performing arts alliance has scheduled a Piano Trio Concert for 7 p.m. April 30 in Christ Cathedral, 138 S. Eighth Street. Tickets can be purchased online by visiting <a href="http://mapaa.org/schedule">mapaa.org/schedule</a>. A reception with the artists will follow the concert.

During the concert, violinist Christina Bouey will perform on a 1728 "Artot" Stradivarius on loan from The Juilliard School. She is scheduled to perform alongside cellist Jesse Henkensiefken and pianist Tatiana Tessman in a program featuring the piano trios of Dmitri Shostakovich and Felix Mendelssohn, as well as Camille Saint-Saëns’ Violin Sonata No. 1.

"The 1728 violin known as 'Artot-Alard,' built by Antonio Stradivari (arguably the most well-known and talented of the Stradivari family) is as beautiful to see as it is to hear. The instrument represents the craftsman at the height of his career. Artot-Alard glows with deep color tones that highlight the graceful curves of the violin," the Mid-America Performing Arts Alliance noted in a news release.

Described by Opera News as playing with “exquisite, quivering beauty,” Christina Bouey is an internationally-renowned violinist and founding member of the Ulysses Quartet. Bouey graduated from Manhattan School of Music with a Master of Music Degree and Professional Studies Certificate, studying with Glenn Dicterow, Lisa Kim, Laurie Smukler, and Nicholas Mann. Her Bachelor of Music (Magna cum laude) is from Boston Conservatory, where she studied with Irina Muresanu as a full scholarship student. Ulysses Quartet, currently a Lisa Arnhold Fellow at The Juilliard School, serves as the School’s Graduate Resident String Quartet. Currently, Bouey plays a 1728 “Artot” Stradivarius violin on loan from Juilliard.

A Kansas native, Jesse Henkensiefken performs regularly as a concert cellist and conductor. He is currently the executive director for the Mid-America Performing Arts Alliance and served as the Program Manager for Harmony Project KC from 2020-2022. He was previously the Director of Orchestras &amp; String Studies, String Division Director, and International Music Festival CoDirector at Kansas Wesleyan University from 2014-2019, while also serving as the Salina Symphony Assistant Conductor and Principal Cellist. He has additional experience working as the Manhattan School of Music Contemporary Opera Ensemble Assistant Conductor from 2012-2014, and was the Ars Viva Chamber Orchestra Music Director from 2009-14. Henkensiefken completed his D.M.A. in Cello Performance at the University of Kansas, where he studied with Edward Laut. He is also a graduate of Manhattan School of Music, where he earned an M.M. in Conducting under the direction of George Manahan and David Gilbert.

Tatiana Tessman has performed as a soloist and with orchestras around the world, from Lincoln Center in New York to La Scala in Milan. She has seen overwhelming success on the international competition front, having won multiple prizes across Europe, the U.S., and Latin America. Tessman is a graduate of Moscow Conservatory, where she studied with teachers including Valery Kastelsky, Pavel Nersessian, Nikolai Lugansky, Sergei Dorensky (with whom she pursued her studies as a post-graduate student), and Mstislav Rostropovich. After completing her undergraduate and graduate studies degrees in Russia, Tessman moved to the United States, where she completed her D.M.A. at Manhattan School of Music under the guidance of Solomon Mikowsky as a recipient of the Elda van Gelder Memorial Foundation Scholarship. She has served as artist-in-residence and director of keyboard studies at Kansas Wesleyan University from 2014-2020. Tessman is currently the artistic director of Mid-America Performing Arts Alliance.

The City of Salina has announced street crack sealing work for the upcoming week.

Monday through Friday, Circle C Construction of Goddard will seal cracks on the following streets, weather permitting.

The work will take place generally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Access to properties within work zones will be maintained at all times. “Road Work Ahead” signs will be placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane closures are to be expected. Motorists are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work zones for the safety of the crews performing the work.

The annual crack and joint sealing program is an important and cost-effective preventive maintenance component of the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. Crack sealing the pavement helps prevent water from penetrating into the pavement structure or sub-base material and aids in reducing a number of pavement problems which include: crack spreading; formation of voids under pavement; swelling and shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action; alligator cracking; potholing; and complete failure. Because of its importance and cost- effectiveness, the Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no less often than every seven years.

This $288,000 project is part of the City's $4.7 million 2022 street maintenance program.

UPDATE 8 a.m. Saturday: Some counties in our area have been moved to red flag warning.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a red flag warning for extreme grassland fire danger, which is in effect from noon to 7 p.m. CDT Saturday for the following counties in our area. 

The fire weather watch is no longer in effect.

Winds from the southwest at 25 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, and relative humidity as low as 14 percent are forecast.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control, the weather service noted. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

The National Weather Service in Hastings, Neb., has issued a red flag warning in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday for the following counties in our area.

Winds from the southwest then shifting to west at 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph, and relative humidity as low as 15 percent are forecast.

Any fires that ignite may spread rapidly and exhibit extreme fire behavior. Use extreme caution if engaging in activities that could result in fire ignition.

The Minneapolis Public Library is seeking a Library Director to begin on July 1, 2022. The Board of Trustees is seeking a self-starter who has the vision and desire to move the library into the future. The opportunity is open due to the upcoming retirement of the current director. The successful candidate must possess library management skills, basic accounting, public relations, and staff management skills. A college degree is strongly preferred. Applications close 5/15/2022.

On April 23, 2005, the recently created video-sharing website YouTube uploaded its first clip, "Me at the Zoo," which showed YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim standing in front of an elephant enclosure at the San Diego Zoo.

In 1616 (Old Style calendar), English poet and dramatist William Shakespeare died in Stratford-upon-Avon on what has traditionally been regarded as the 52nd anniversary of his birth in 1564.

In 1898, Spain declared war on the United States, which responded in kind two days later.

In 1940, about 200 people died in the Rhythm Night Club Fire in Natchez, Mississippi.

In 1954, Hank Aaron of the Milwaukee Braves hit the first of his 755 major-league home runs in a game against the St. Louis Cardinals. (The Braves won, 7-5.)
