Salina woman injured in two-vehicle wreck; teen driver cited

A Saline County man is out nearly $1,500 after someone broke into his residence and another building and stole multiple items.

The incident occurred sometime between 5:30 a.m.-1:40 p.m. Thursday in the 11000 block of W. Stimmel Road, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said Friday morning.

Someone kicked in a door of the residence, causing $500 worth of damage and went through the house. Additionally, a Morton Building on the property was burgled and the following items were taken, Soldan said.

Sheriff: Multiple items stolen from property west of Salina

WABAUNSEE COUNTY —In collaboration with the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office, the Saline County Sheriff's Office and Salina Police Department recently participated in a special operation that targeted major criminals, according to a social media report from the sheriff's office.

 This operation occurred in Wabaunsee County over a three-day span and officers made multiple arrests.

 In addition to the arrests, there were several cases where large amounts of narcotics were seized. 

 This operation is a great example where multiple agencies collaborated and worked together on a common goal and made area communities a safer place. Among the other agencies who participated are the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office, Junction City Police Department, Grandview Plaza Police Department , Osage County Sheriff’s Office, Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office , Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office, Newton Police Department, North Newton Police Department and the Wamego Police Department.

Kansas agencies collaborate to fight drug crimes

On Monday, at approximately 4:24 p.m., officers of the Salina Police Department were sent to Planet Fitness, 2012 S. Ohio Street, regarding a stolen vehicle. 

The victim reported that while she was in the business, the her vehicle keys were stolen from the locker room, and an unknown subject stole her black 2017 Kia Forte from the parking lot. The victim’s financial cards were in the vehicle during the vehicle theft. The victim discovered one of her financial cards was used at a business in Salina. 

Surveillance video shows the female suspect was dropped off at Planet Fitness by a silver Honda Civic four-door. The Forte was recovered in Manhattan the following day.

Should Kansas amend its constitution to allow abortions to be illegal?

Two Kansas professors have been invited to a meeting in Salina later this month to discuss all sides of the proposed constitutional amendment on abortion. Kansans will vote on the amendment in the Aug. 2 special election.&nbsp;

The discussion is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday in the K-State Salina College Center conference room, 2310 Centennial Road. Refreshments will be served at the program, which is open to the public at no charge.

The event is co-sponsored by the Kansas Women Attorneys Association and the Salina League of Women Voters.&nbsp;

Constitutional law professor Jeff Jackson of Washburn University and Patrick Miller,&nbsp;associate professor of political science at the University of Kansas, have been asked to give a balanced view of what the proposed amendment says and what it means.

Salina League of Women Voters President Lori Trow said it is important that all registered Kansas voters understand that they can vote on this measure on the Aug. 2 primary ballot, regardless of their party affiliation. Whatever their political leanings, voters need to understand what they’re voting on, she said.

Professors to discuss proposed constitutional amendment

A relative of mine recently mentioned she had two life insurance policies. Is it okay for a person to have more than one life insurance policy? If so, why would someone do that?

There aren’t any rules against having more than one life insurance policy. The only real problem is it might complicate your life a little in terms of having multiple premium withdrawals, checks or possibly additional policy fees to worry about every month. It’s cheaper just to have just one policy, generally speaking, but regardless of whether you have one or more, I always recommend having 10 to 12 times your annual income wrapped up in a good, level term life&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/insurance/coverage-checkup/7e812192-293a-4344-8ead-d31ae62abbbd/extended-basic-info" target="_blank">insurance</a>&nbsp;policy.

Different people have different personal and business financial situations, so there could be many reasons to have more than one life insurance policy. I have lots of insurance connected to our estate plan, our business and different kinds of things. Most life insurance companies will only write so much in coverage for one person, so when this has been the case, I just went to another carrier for additional coverage.

Also, some people buy more than one life insurance policy just to feel secure from a provider standpoint. If one insurance company goes out of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/career-advice/interview-guide" target="_blank">business</a>, they’ll still have another policy—or more—in place. That’s not usually a big problem, though, since the majority of insurance companies have insurance to back them up with the state, or are very financially stable.

MANHATTAN — Kansas Farm Bureau’s (KFB) Foundation for Agriculture will award $23,500 in scholarships to 39 students studying in fields that benefit agriculture during the 2022-23 school year. Over the past decade, the foundation has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarships. Additionally, county Farm Bureaus across the state award more than $150,000 annually to students continuing their education. “We’re investing in students today to ensure they become tomorrow’s leaders,” says Kansas Farm Bureau President and Foundation Chair Rich Felts. Shelby Spreier, Harvey County, was awarded $1,000 for the Frank and Helen Bernasek Memorial Scholarship, a permanent, privately endowed scholarship fund. HAYS – Fort Hays State University students and their professors represented their chapter of the Lambda Alpha Epsilon at last month’s National Conference of the American Criminal Justice Association (ACJA) in Kansas City, Mo.

Ten different club members and three professors placed in numerous events ain four different divisions: lower, upper, graduate, and professional.

It was the first such conference held since 2019 because of the pandemic.

In addition to conference events, students and faculty engaged in a team-building activity with three teams participating in separate escape rooms, attended an educational session at the Charles Evans Whittaker U.S. Courthouse in Kansas City, Mo., and completed a volunteer service activity at the Rose Brooke Domestic Violence Shelter.

FHSU award winners are listed with students first (in alphabetical order with their hometown) followed by the faculty members.

Gypsum's Sprecker places in criminal justice competition for FHSU

A new type of Dollar General is coming to the location of the former Save A Lot store on E. Iron Avenue.

The Dollar General Corporation announced Thursday that it plans to relocate its downtown Salina store from 140 S. Santa Fe Avenue to 511 E. Iron Avenue by early summer. The new location will be a DG Market, the first of its kind in Kansas, and will offer fresh meats and produce, as well as home décor and an expanded party preparation selection, in addition to the regular brands and products Dollar General is know to carry. 

“We are excited to expand our offerings to Salina residents through our upcoming relocation, which includes the first DG Market in the Sunflower state,” said Matthew Simonsen, Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and store development.  “At Dollar General, we are committed to serving our customers with a pleasant shopping experience and strive to be a good corporate citizen. Bringing the DG Market format to Salina aims to serve the community with affordable access to household essentials and healthier foods through a convenient location. Together with our developer partner Blue Beacon, we look forward to expanding our offerings in Saline County, and provide the community with closer access to fresh and healthier foods and a convenient location to purchase the items they want and need at everyday low prices. We hope our customers will enjoy the new store.”

The DG Market's produce section will include "the top 20 items typically sold in traditional grocery stores and covers approximately 80 percent of produce categories most grocery stores carry. It will include fresh fruits and vegetables including, tomatoes, onions, apples, strawberries, potatoes, sweet potatoes, lemons, limes, salad mixes, and more," Dollar General Corporation noted in a news release.

"The store will also continue to offer frozen and refrigerated food offerings in addition to the same categories, brands, and products that customers trust Dollar General to carry," the company noted.

The new DG Market store also will bring with it a commitment to the community. 

"The Salina store provides the opportunity for schools, nonprofit organizations, and libraries within a 15-mile radius of the store to apply for Dollar General Literacy Foundation grants," Dollar General Corporation explained. "Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $203 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 14.8 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education."

The National Weather Service in Hastings, Neb., has moved Jewell County and Mitchell County under a high wind warning, in effect from noon Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday.

South winds at 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected.

Some of the strongest winds Friday will come after dark, just ahead of an approaching cold front. While winds will be strong all day, a surge in winds just ahead of the cold front is expected during the late evening through overnight hours.

Damaging winds could blow down trees and possibly even power lines. Isolated power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

People should avoid being outside around large trees or near loose objects during this windstorm. All loose objects kept outside should either be secured or brought inside. If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Use caution if you must drive.

City of Salina seeks volunteers for boards, committees

ALLIANCE, Neb. - A Salina, Kan., man charged in the motor vehicle death of an Alliance woman has waived his right to a preliminary hearing and has been bound over to District Court for trial.

Ryan McElroy, 36, appeared in Box Butte County Court Thursday morning with his legal counsel, Stacy Bach of Scottsbluff. Bach is serving as court appointed counsel as McElroy cannot afford to hire an attorney.

Judge Paul Wess set McElroy’s District Court appearance for April 27 at 1:30 p.m. At that time, McElroy will enter his plea and a future court date will be set.

McElroy is charged with felony counts of manslaughter and motor vehicle homicide as well as misdemeanor counts of third offense DUI and willful reckless driving. McElroy’s vehicle was allegedly traveling in the wrong lane when he collided head on with 22-year-old Blythe Boness of Alliance.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Boness, a 2019 graduate of Alliance High Schools, was pronounced dead at the scene.&nbsp; The collision occurred a few miles east of Alliance on Highway Two on April 10.

McElroy remains housed in the Box Butte County Jail on ten percent of a $100,000 bond.

Now that the case has entered District Court, prosecution will be handled by the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office.

 </figure>By Panhandle PostALLIANCE, Neb. - A Salina, Kan., man charged in the motor vehicle death of an Alliance woman has waived his right to a preliminary hearing and has been bound over to District Court for trial.Ryan McElroy, 36, appeared in Box Butte County Court Thursday morning with his legal counsel, Stacy Bach of Scottsbluff. McElroy waives preliminary hearing, bound over for trial

REPUBLIC COUNTY —U.S. 36 in both directions between milepost 225 and 226 in Republic County is back open following a train, semi accident, according to the Jewell County Sheriff.

Many train cars were derailed and upright train cars were blocking the highway. Authorities have not reported any injuries.

REPUBLIC COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities and other first responders are on the scene of a train derailment at the Jewell County, Republic County line approximately 14 miles east of Mankato, according to the Jewell County Sheriff.&nbsp; 

The train derailment involved an injury accident with a semi.&nbsp;Multiple train cars are derailed and upright train cars are blocking U.S. 36.

The Kansas Department of Transportation closed U.S. 36 in both directions just west of Kansas 199. The railroad crossing is also closed.&nbsp;

&nbsp;The road is expected to remain closed until approximately 6:00p.m. according to the sheriff's department.

UPDATE: U.S. 36 open following train derailment

A scooter that was stolen several weeks ago has been stolen again.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that sometime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Wednesday, someone stole a 2014 Bronc Rally scooter from a residence in the 1000 block of E. Iron Avenue. The scooter originally was green, but was repainted gray by the person who stole it a few weeks ago. It later was found abandoned and returned to its owner, Forrester said.

The scooter has a Kansas license plate of 20CWZ, and is valued at $1,000.

Forrester said the scooter, which was parked near the front porch of the residence, was not working. Additionally, the owner still has the scooter key.

Water being turned on for season at Kanopolis State Park

A long-time supporter of Kansas Wesleyan has shown its generosity once more, as KWU announced a $100,000 gift from the Elden V. Miller family Wednesday. 

The gift will go towards KWU’s Music campaign, edging the university closer to its $4.5 million goal.&nbsp;

“The Elden V. Miller family has a wonderful tradition of supporting Kansas Wesleyan,” said Ken Oliver, vice president of advancement and university relations. “Whether it’s been capital campaigns, building projects or scholarships, the family has been a key part of the historical growth of KWU. We’re truly thankful that they see what’s great about Kansas Wesleyan, and have chosen to support us during these past decades.”

Previous donations from the family include numerous gifts to the sciences, the naming of Miller Chapel, the Graves Family Sports Complex campaign, and an endowed scholarship for nursing, which has enriched students’ education for more than 30 years.

KWU has now announced $3.2 million in gifts toward its music campaign, which will be highlighted by a renovation of Sams Chapel. All told, the university has exceeded $22 million raised in its $26 million Power of AND Campaign.
