CONCORDIA - Cloud County Community College has received a $1 million grant from the Sunderland Foundation to be used for construction of the college’s Technical Education and Innovation Center. 

The approximately 35,000 square foot center will house Renewable Energy, which includes Wind and Solar Energy and Drones; Nursing and Allied Health, which also offers high-demand career education for EMT, CNA, CMA, Home Health Aide, and IV Therapy; and Agriculture and Industrial Technology, including welding and CDL training, according to information from the college.

“We are honored and elated that the Sunderland Foundation invested in Cloud County’s project to grow and retain a strong Kansas workforce,” said Cloud County Community College President Amber Knoettgen. “We are grateful for their partnership in recognizing the value of a modern educational center in our local community.”

With the Cloud County Community College Foundation’s lead gift of $1.5 million, the college was able to pursue industry partners for additional support. Salina Regional Health Center and its affiliates, major partners of the college’s Nursing and Allied Health Programs, donated $1 million toward the project. Another significant partner was the Kansas Legislature, with a direct appropriation of $4 million from Federal American Rescue Plan Act Appropriations. The Sunderland Foundation becomes the most recent major partner in the project with its $1 million investment.

On Wednesday, the Salina Regional Health Foundation announced that it had awarded a $250,000 Community Health Investment Program grant to the Cloud County project.

The tech center project is scheduled to begin in fall 2022, with construction expected to be completed in spring 2024. Due to inflation, the estimated total project cost for the center is now $13.9 million.

Cloud County is in the late stages of fundraising for the tech center, and naming opportunities for additional donors are still available, the college noted in a news release.

CCCC receives $1M grant for Technical Education and Innovation Center

Police are looking for a man who was seen on surveillance video breaking into a central Salina church.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that several calls were received at approximately 7:10 a.m. Wednesday from residents in the 900 block of Pearl Avenue about a person wandering through backyards. The person was described as a Black male in his late teens or 20s, with short black hair, with no shirt on and wearing black pants.

At 9 a.m. Wednesday, officers were dispatched to the nearby First Baptist Church, 843 Lewis Avenue, for the report of a burglary, Forrester said. 

Church personnel reported that a Black male who matched the earlier description from Pearl Avenue was seen on surveillance video in the church parking lot at approximately 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. Then, approximately an hour later, the same man was seen entering the church through a window. Once he was in the church vestibule, the man found a key that enabled him to enter the church sanctuary. He then left the church a few minutes later.

Forrester said that church personnel reported that the only thing missing was the key.

A check of her car revealed that a Razer laptop and a Bluetooth device also were missing. Total loss was estimated at $2,385. Cameron told police that she inadvertently left the car unlocked.

Forrester said a neighbor had surveillance video showing a man entering Cameron's car. An officer was able to identify the man as Gregory Dyrness, 29, of Salina.

Police located Dyrness at his apartment in the 100 block of N. Wisconsin Street and arrested him on a requested charge of vehicle burglary, Forrester said.

The event is scheduled for 7-9 p.m. Monday at Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, 141 N. Santa Fe Avenue. Sponsored by People United for Safety and Health, the event is open to the public. 

"Minds may not be changed, but an idea exchange seems critical. Most agree that the simple word 'abortion' is only a snapshot of a much more complex picture. Those interested in sharing their ideas and personal stories about how this amendment (and the issue of women’s reproductive rights generally) may affect them are welcome. Willing listeners are also welcome," People United for Safety and Health noted in a news release.

Time allotted for each speaker will be generous but not unlimited, according to the organization. Three-to-five-minute readings of poetry, articles, editorials, and other written material is also fair game. After readings and presentations, time will be allotted for open discussion among attendees.

Open mic night about proposed constitutional amendment set

Brenda Gutierrez, executive director of the Salina Area Technical College Foundation, attended her first meeting of the Kansas Community and Technical College Development Officers’ Conference held at Colby Community College.

During the two-day conference, participants from across the state took part in a variety of events, including a discussion of the relationship between colleges and their foundations with Colby Community College President Seth Carter, and a presentation by Brien Stockman, a member of the Dane G. Hansen Foundation Board of Trustees.

The theme of the conference was “Producing Through Philanthropy,” with other sessions devoted to capital campaigns, stewardship, digital storytelling and board development.

One highlight of the conference was dinner and a tour of the headquarters of Frahm Farmland, Inc., a 30,600-acre farm near Colby. The Frahm family believes in contributing to the world around them and leaving the communities and the lives they touch better than how they found them.

As the conference came to a close, Gutierrez said, she reflected on everything she had learned: “It was great to learn about new strategies that are working for others across the state and how we can apply those strategies at Salina Tech. Graduates from colleges such as Salina Tech are in high demand, and generating philanthropic support to help future students be successful is an exciting challenge.”

Groundbreaking for REPCO expansion set for Monday

On Wednesday, APAC Shears of Salina began working on the City of Salina’s annual asphalt mill and inlay project. The schedule is as follows, weather permitting:

The work consists of milling the existing asphalt street surface 1.5” and replacing it with new asphalt to rehabilitate and preserve the pavement section. Permanent pavement markings will be placed shortly after the resurfacing.

The work on local streets will be completed with total closures, and residents will be given sufficient notice and accommodations. The work on arterial streets will be completed with lane closures. Motorists should expect modest delays and are encouraged to avoid the work zones altogether if possible.

City of Salina's annual mill and inlay project begins today

MANHATTAN —&nbsp;Just as humans crave a cold drink during the sweltering heat of the summer, the same holds true for dogs and cats. 

Kansas State University animal nutrition expert Greg Aldrich said that water needs can increase for&nbsp;pets&nbsp;during the summer months. &nbsp;

“If the temperature gets relatively hot, above 86 degrees Fahrenheit,&nbsp;pets&nbsp;will need more water,” Aldrich said.&nbsp;

While there is not much scientific data available on how seasonal water intake differs, Aldrich said in general,&nbsp;pets&nbsp;should be drinking 50-60 milliliters water per kilogram of bodyweight. &nbsp;

“So, a 10 kilogram dog (22 pounds) would need 500-600 milliliters (1/2 to 2/3 quarts) water,” Aldrich said. “Under higher temperatures, water intake will increase by 6-10 milliliter per 1 degree centigrade. So, in round figures, that’s another 10% water per day when the temperatures go over 30 C (86 F).”&nbsp;

Aldrich said a general rule is to simply provide a constant supply of drinking water.&nbsp;

According to Aldrich, signs of dehydration may include:&nbsp;

●Difficulty with balance and coordination.&nbsp;

Pet owners witnessing any of these symptoms should provide water immediately and seek help from a veterinarian.&nbsp;

Regarding food intake, Aldrich says&nbsp;pets&nbsp;housed outdoors may actually have a decrease in appetite. &nbsp;

“It is not uncommon that food intake will decline 10% or more, and that dogs may still gain weight during the hotter months,” he said. “They will likely lose these pounds during the cooler winter months.”&nbsp;

Even if the pet is housed outdoors, food should be kept in a cool, dry place. Aldrich emphasized the importance of providing shade and good ventilation for&nbsp;pets&nbsp;during the harsh summer months. &nbsp;

The Salina Regional Health Foundation’s Community Health Investment Program (CHIP) awarded eight grants at its summer meeting totaling $399,550. 

Funding for CHIP primarily comes from Salina Regional Health Center, which tithes a percentage of its operating margin each year to the Salina Regional Health Foundation. Since the inception of CHIP in 1995, more than $13 million in grants have been awarded to local community organizations.

Funding priorities for CHIP primarily focus on children’s health, childhood obesity, mental health, substance abuse, aging populations, heart disease and stroke. Applications for CHIP are accepted three times a year. The next CHIP application deadline is August 26.

• $24,550 to Salina Education Foundation to sponsor a variety of programs and initiatives for the 2022-23 academic year including audiology screening equipment, Sudden Opportunity Grants, Nurse Emergency Funds, Opportunity Now-Get Fit, Heartland Weekend Meals, and Social Workers Fund.

• $19,500 to American Red Cross Blood Services to help fund the operating expenses for community blood drives including staff, transportation, collection supplies, testing, processing and delivering blood for patients in need in Saline County and north-central Kansas.

• $12,000 to North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging, Inc. to support the 2022 Sunflower Fair and Regional Outreach Initiative for older adults and individuals with disabilities.

• $8,500 to Smoky Hill Education Foundation to support its Educator Recharge Retreat, quarterly follow-up meetings and accompanying resources for these initiatives.

Operation Christmas Child is the topic of an upcoming program at the First Southern Baptist Church.

The program is scheduled for 7-8:30 p.m. on July 21 in the church, 2401 S. Ohio Street. The program is open to the public.

The speakers will be Pastor Mark and Cherry Brumbelow of the Grace Baptist Church in Wild Peach, Texas. 

In 2016, when Grace Baptist Church had only 30 members, the church packed 2,000 Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts, according to information provided by the Salina church. In 2017, the Texas church packed 8,030 shoebox gifts, despite the fact that many of the church members' homes were flooded by Hurricane Harvey. Shortly afterward, the Brumbelows were invited to Barbuda to distribute shoebox gifts to children who had lost their homes to Hurricane Irma.

Additionally, Zac Vakadewatabua, who received a shoebox gift when he was a boy in Fiji, is scheduled to participate in the presentation. Vakadewatabua, who now lives in Junction City with his wife and children, serves as the children and youth director at the Clay Center United Methodist Church.

With Vakadewatabua's father as the family's only breadwinner, his parents did their best to provide for their five children, but found it challenging to be able to afford education, gifts, and toys for them, according to biographical information provided by the First Southern Baptist Church. 

When Vakadewatabua was about nine years old, he received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox gift that included coloring pencils, crayons, a jump rope, and his favorite, a yo-yo. He took the yo-yo with him everywhere he went and slept with it at night. That gift box planted a seed in his heart that helped shape the man he has become.

A $60,000 car was stolen from a south Salina dealership earlier this month.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that sometime on July 1, someone stole a red 2010 Chevrolet Camaro from Long McArthur, 3450 S. Ninth Street.

The Camaro has a distinct hood scoop with a clear panel, as well as a Mr. Norm's Garage trim package and includes signatures on the front and rear badges of Mr. Norm, Forrester said.

The car was last seen by Long McArthur personnel on July 1.

Two people were cited in three-vehicle wreck late Monday afternoon in central Salina.

All three vehicles were southbound in the 600 block of S. Ninth Street. A 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan driven by Marisol Torres, 46, of Tescott, was stopped in traffic when it was rear-ended by a 2011 Cadillac SRX driven by Lance Engel, 65, of McPherson, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. 

The force of the collision sent the Tiguan into the back of a 2012 Scion TC that also was stopped in traffic. The Scion was driven by Taniesha Locke, 38, of Salina.

The wreck occurred at approximately 5:15 p.m. Monday.

Torres suffered possible minor injuries, but was not transported to the hospital, Forrester said.

The Cadillac sustained front end damage, the Tiguan both front-end and rear-end damage, and the Scion rear-end damage. All three vehicles were able to be driven away.

Forrester said Engel was cited for following too closely and Locke was cited for no proof of insurance and no driver's license.

Three-vehicle wreck in central Salina results in two drivers being cited

WICHITA — Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center is hosting an event to assist Veterans living in north-central Kansas with understanding VA services available to them, getting enrolled for VA health care, and to begin the process of filing disability claims.

“Including Saline and surrounding counties, there are more than 4,000 veterans in northcentral Kansas who are not enrolled for VA health care,” said Jeff Herndon, public affairs officer for Dole VA. “About 2,400 of them reside in Saline County, so we’re coming there to ensure veterans are receiving every benefit they have earned. We want to make it as easy as possible for them to get enrolled.”

The outreach event is being hosted by Vietnam Veterans of America. It will be held 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on July 23, at the Temple, 336 S. Santa Fe Avenue, in Salina.

Representatives from Dole VA’s Health Benefits department, Veteran Benefits Administration (VBA), and service officers from Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs) will be available throughout the designated time to process actions.

Veterans should bring a copy of their DD-214 and most-recent tax return to expedite enrollment and claims. Dependents and family members of veterans are also invited to attend.

Dole VA Medical Center is hosting an event to assist Veterans living in north-central Kansas with understanding VA services available to them, getting enrolled for VA health care, and to begin the process of filing disability claims.“Including Saline and surrounding counties, there are more than 4,000 veterans in northcentral Kansas who are not enrolled for VA health care,” said Jeff Herndon, public affairs officer for Dole VA. “About 2,400 of them reside in Saline County, so we’re coming there to ensure veterans are receiving every benefit they have earned. We want to make it as easy as possible for them to get enrolled.”The outreach event is being hosted by Vietnam Veterans of America. It will be held 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on July 23, at the Temple, 336 S. Santa Fe Avenue, in Salina.Representatives from Dole VA’s Health Benefits department, Veteran Benefits Administration (VBA), and service officers from Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs) will be available throughout the designated time to process actions.Veterans should bring a copy of their DD-214 and most-recent tax return to expedite enrollment and claims. Dole VA hosting health care enrollment fair in Salina

Police are investigating the theft of a motorcycle in north Salina Tuesday night.

A 62-year-old Salina man told police that sometime between 9-10:30 p.m. Tuesday, someone stole his 2005 Harley-Davidson Springer Softail Classic motorcycle from the 1000 block of N. 12th Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The motorcycle, valued at $8,000, has black side saddle bags and a tear in the seat. It also has a Kansas license plate of 72DPX, Forrester said.

The owner still has the keys to the motorcycle in his possession.

CHAPMAN - A minor earthquake rattled part of Dickinson County early Wednesday morning.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, the 2.2 magnitude quake struck at 12:46 a.m. northeast of Chapman. The quake was centered just south-southeast of the Sage Road/2800 Avenue intersection.

9th Judicial District commission announces interview schedule

We have turned the calendar to July, and that means different things to different people. For students and teachers July means summer is at the halfway point, and the first day of school is near. For those of us in agriculture it means haying season and watching fall crops grow. In the Farm Bureau world, July is the start of county Farm Bureau annual meetings. County Farm Bureau meetings in Kansas are as unique as the counties themselves. They are held anytime from July until October; the only stipulation is that they have to be done in time to get the voting delegates for that county registered for the Kansas Farm Bureau annual meeting in December. The meetings vary in the type of meal served – anything from catered affairs to hotdog and hamburger feeds or even ice cream socials. Some have entertainment, others feature educational speakers while some are bare bones, business-only gatherings. Recently some counties have gone with more family friendly activities with their annual meeting tagged on at the end. Yes, there is no cookie-cutter county Farm Bureau Annual meeting template. That is the beauty of Kansas Farm Bureau, each county organization is its own unique entity. That is what makes me proud to be a member of Kansas Farm Bureau and the Pottawatomie County Farm Bureau specifically. I have never been involved with an organization that was so grassroots driven and responsive to its members. Every annual meeting reflects the unique personality of an individual county and the members on the board. I have seen traditions developed over many years in some counties and other counties like to mix it up with something new each year. The COVID-19 years saw a lot of change in our county annual meeting with many being held virtual, thank goodness that isn’t the case anymore. One thing that all county annual meetings share is great fellowship among the members. That is where I want to make the plea to you. If you are a member and you have not been to one of your annual meetings, please change that this year. You should receive notice of the meeting from your respective county. Some will be a simple postcard while others will be a newsletter touting what your county has done during the year. If you have not received your notice yet or think you might have missed it, just call your local office and they will be happy to give you the details. I hope you will consider attending, this is a good way to get your toes wet and see what your organization has to offer. I don’t know of a single county that isn’t looking for members who want to be active and this is a good way to find out what it is all about. Who knows you might at least have a great meal or some other experience?
