The Saline County Sheriff's Office is asking for assistance in locating Dalton Levi Palmer. Palmer is currently listed on the 24 Most Wanted for May of 2022 in Saline County, Kansas. Palmer has a Saline County District Court felony fail to appear warrant with charges of: Distribution of Meth, Possession of Meth, Possession of Drug Para, Criminal Use of Weapons, Interfere w/LEO, Child Endangerment and multiple traffic charges. Palmer was last known to be in Salina, Kansas but is known to have ties to the Delphos, Kansas area.

The Salina Police Department is also attempting to locate Palmer as a person of interest in a shooting case dated 05/07/2022. Due to Palmer's past criminal behavior, he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Three people were injured when a pickup and car collided in northwest Salina Monday morning.

Verna Mettlen, 79, of Lincoln, was northbound on N. Broadway Boulevard in a 2007 Buick LaCrosse when she attempted to turn west onto State Street and turned in front of a southbound 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup driven by Kathy McCandless, 62, of Salina, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The wreck occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. Monday.

Both drivers and an 81-year-old male passenger in the LaCrosse were injured and were transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, Forrester said.

The LaCrosse sustained extensive passenger-side damage and the Ram sustained front-end damage, Forrester said. Both were towed from the scene.

Forrester said Mettlen was cited for failure to yield.

The month of May is National Bike Month, and KANcycle, a regional bike-sharing program sponsored by OCCK and Blue Cross Blue Shield, is announcing activities and events taking place over the next few weeks.

KANcycle is partnering with Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House, 141 N. Santa Fe, Salina, to offer a 10% discount to any patron riding a bicycle to location.&nbsp; This discount started May 1.&nbsp; Bike racks are conveniently located outside the coffee house.

National Bike to Work Day is May 20.&nbsp; Residents all across the region are encouraged to ride their bike to work and to share photos on social media by using the hashtag #salinabikestowork2022 or #kansasbikestowork2022.&nbsp;

“KANcycle has been a great program for Salina and North Central Kansas,” said Michelle Griffin, Director of Mobility Management for the region.&nbsp; “We are so excited to create this first partnership with Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House and our first effort to celebrate National Bike to Work Day.&nbsp; We want to encourage mobility in all forms, and biking is a great way to do that.”

KANcycle regional bike sharing provides North Central Kansas, including Salina, Minneapolis, Concordia, Belleville, Mankato, Beloit, Lincoln, and Ellsworth, with convenient, affordable access to bicycles as an easy, fun, healthy and eco-friendly means of transportation and recreation.&nbsp; OCCK, through a collaborative funding partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, brings you KANcycle powered by Movatic.

Riders join the program by signing up for annual memberships or pay-as-you-go.&nbsp; Annual memberships will be $30 with trips under 1 hour being free, student annual memberships will be $20 with trips under 1 hour being free, and pay-as-you-go will be $1.50 every 30 minutes.

The Salina Police Department has scheduled an open house for its Regional Training Center on Saturday.

The open house is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The center is located at 3770 Yost Drive in far south Salina.

Air service, jail project updates on county agenda for Tuesday

Kansas Wesleyan will welcome one of the nation’s top drum and bugle corps, the Crossmen, to campus for the group’s spring training camp beginning May 20.

The Crossmen, who compete as part of Drum Corps International, have reached that organization’s finals 29 times in its 48-year history. The entire corps will be in residence on KWU’s campus, including all practices, through June 23 as it gears up for its summer season.

“It’s not often you can bring in a group that’s one of the best in the country, but that’s who the Crossmen are,” said James McAllister, Music Department chair. “We are thrilled to bring them to Salina and hope the community comes out in force to see these great talents. It’s also exciting to bring drum corps action back to Salina, a town rich in drum corps history. Longtime Salinians will recall the Salina Silver Sabres. Part of the Crossmen experience at KWU will include a Silver Sabres alumni reunion.”

The final day of the residency, June 23, will be one of the most exciting of the month, as area students will have the opportunity to work with Crossmen at a special Marching Music Experience that will kick off the organization’s regular season. KWU students, as well as those from USD 305 and Sacred Heart High School, can participate free of charge, while others will pay a small fee.

All Crossmen practices will be open to the public, with the majority to be conducted at Graves Family Sports Complex. If you wish to bring a large group or high school band or if you have other questions, please contact McAllister at 785-833-4374.

KWU to welcome nationally known drum and bugle corps

WICHITA – On April 24,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.musictheatreofwichita.org/home" target="_blank">Music Theatre Wichita</a>&nbsp;hosted its 20th&nbsp;Annual&nbsp;<a href="https://mtwichita.org/education/jester_awards_program/about" target="_blank">Jester&nbsp;Awards</a>, a program designed to celebrate excellence in high school musical theatre.

Out of 25 categories and 46 high schools nominated across the state, 29 total&nbsp;Jester&nbsp;Awards were given out with three going to Salina area high school students.

“After 20 years of honoring young actors across Kansas, we continue to be amazed at the talent we have in our local high school theatres,” said Brian J. Marcum, artistic director for Music Theatre Wichita. “It’s our true honor to put the spotlight on these schools and students who work so hard designing, directing and acting in local productions for our community’s entertainment.”

This year, 61 judges viewed 147 performances of 49 productions, involving more than 2,900 students and 49 schools across the state of Kansas. The program began in Wichita, but now extends as far as Liberal, Hays, Salina, and Pittsburg, in addition to the greater Wichita area.&nbsp;

Salina Central, SES bring home Jester Awards

Salina Regional Health Center, the Salina Regional Health Foundation and the Salina Regional Health Foundation's Community Health Investment Program have announced a combined donation totaling $1 million for Cloud County Community College's Technical Education and Innovation Center. 

The facility will house the academic programs of nursing and allied health, renewable energy, and agriculture and industrial technology.

"We want to support the continued growth of nursing education in north-central Kansas," said Joel Phelps, President/CEO at Salina Regional Health Center. "We're all invested in the Concordia community's success and the mission that Cloud County Community College accomplishes is aligned with Salina Regional Health Center's mission as well."

Salina Regional’s donation has secured naming rights for the Nursing Department’s Skills Area and Sim Lab.

Cloud County’s Technical Education and Innovation Center will positively impact the number of workers in Kansas by providing the needed education and skills to support occupational groups expected to grow employment from 2019-2029.

“We are so excited and appreciative of this generous gift from our partners at Salina Regional Health Center,” said Cloud County Community College President Amber Knoettgen. “We have had a long-standing relationship with them, and we are thrilled to continue our partnership for years to come. I would like to thank CEO Joel Phelps and the entire team at Salina Regional for supporting such an important project to build and retain talent in north-central Kansas.”

Abilene finalist for Best Historic Small Town for 4th year

Central High School woods and drafting students joined industrial technology students from across Kansas at the Western Kansas Technology Fair at Fort Hays State University. Students participated in competitions and received awards.

Michael Hair, drafting teacher, and Mike Kilgore, woodworking teacher, received the&nbsp;Outstanding Technology Program&nbsp;award.

Drafting students recognized for overall grade level best project awards:

●Charlie Slothower, 10th&nbsp;grade overall best drafting project

●Faith Rost, 11th&nbsp;grade overall best drafting project

Cason Vanderbilt also received the overall best drafting project award.

Woodworking students, operating as a team for the day’s competitions, received the following.

“Many of my students stay after school for hours and even pull all-nighters at home to complete their project by the deadline,” explained Hair. 

Students in the drafting and woods classes use project-based learning activities to create their projects. Hair and Kilgore agree the technology fair is a great opportunity for students to display what they have learned throughout the year.

Central High School woods, drafting students’ work recognized

The Salina Symphony Board of Directors has announced today that Yaniv Segal will be the symphony's next music director. Segal was chosen from among more than 100 applicants, five of whom presented a concert to the community during the 2021-2022 Pass the Baton search season.

The decision to engage Segal as music director came after an extensive search with input from the Salina Symphony Board, musicians, patrons, and community members. According to executive director Adrienne Allen, it was Segal’s ability to engage both the musicians and the community that set him apart. “Yaniv is a gifted conductor with a great deal of experience both on and off the podium,” she said. “The way he embraced the community during the search process was really impressive.”

Segal joins the Salina Symphony as only the third music director in the organization’s 67-year history. Planning will begin soon for the 2022-2023 concert season schedule.

“We are all incredibly excited to start the next chapter of the Salina Symphony and to continue to bring exceptional live symphonic music to the community,” said Board president Gabe Grant. “We are fortunate to have someone of Yaniv’s caliber help forge the future of the Salina Symphony organization.”

Segal looks forward to stepping into the artistic leadership role of the Salina Symphony organization. “I was immediately impressed by both the ability as well as the potential of the Salina Symphony,” he said. “I enjoyed working with the orchestra and appreciated their desire to achieve excellence. Additionally, I felt that the broad base of community support and strong administrative team set up an ideal environment for producing transformational artistic experiences. I cannot wait to get back to town and get to work on sharing our love of classical music!”

Creative polymath Yaniv Segal has achieved critical success since childhood for his work as a conductor, composer, actor, and violinist. A rising star who is “redefining classical music” (Esquire Magazine), Yaniv is conductor laureate and artistic advisor of the Chelsea Symphony, a former assistant conductor of the Naples Philharmonic and Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and has assisted at the New York Philharmonic. With performances described as “enthusiastic, lively, and incisive” (Giornale di Sicilia) and “illuminating” (New York Times), Yaniv has collaborated with artists ranging from Yitzhak Perlman and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg to the Beach Boys and Chris Botti, and appeared with many orchestras worldwide including the Minnesota Orchestra, Kansai Philharmonic, Sinfonietta Cracovia, and Beethoven Academy Orchestra.

In 2020, NAXOS released Yaniv’s&nbsp;Beethoven REimagined, a&nbsp;commercial recording made with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Called “exciting [and] outrageous” by the Times of London, the album presents contemporary music inspired by Beethoven arranged and written by Yaniv as well as composer/DJ Gabriel Prokofiev. Previous commercial releases include the works of David Chesky on&nbsp;Joy and Sorrow, and&nbsp;The Mice War—an opera that teaches the children about the folly of war and is available for streaming from Amazon.

Drawing on his experience as a music educator and father, Yaniv wrote&nbsp;The Harmony Games&nbsp;in 2018. It was commissioned by the Naples Philharmonic to introduce school-age children to the orchestra while connecting music and math; it has already been performed over fifty times. In the 2021-22 season, Yaniv’s works and arrangements were performed by the Reno Philharmonic, Ashland Symphony Orchestra, Grand Rapid Youth Symphony and Classical Orchestra, and the Norwalk Symphony.

Yaniv grew up in New York with a Polish mother—a violinist who was one of the first women in the New York Philharmonic—and an Israeli father—a luthier who made the instruments his family plays on. As a child, he sang at the Metropolitan Opera, then starred as Colin in the International Broadway Tour of&nbsp;The Secret Garden,&nbsp;and was “convincing” (New York Times) as Joe in Tom Stoppard’s&nbsp;Hapgood&nbsp;at Lincoln Center. He studied violin with Setsu Goto, and twice was a soloist with the Yonkers Philharmonic. Yaniv attended Vassar College and earned graduate degrees in conducting and composition at the University of Michigan with support from the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans. He has also studied with Lorin Maazel and Kurt Masur, and continues to receive mentorship from international conductors Leonard Slatkin and Andrey Boreyko.

Segal lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with his wife—a scientist and physician—and two young sons.

The 2022-2023 season will open under Maestro Segal’s baton in October.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that Christopher Field, 48, of Salina, was turning his 2017 Hyundai Elantra into the parking lot of the Rodeway Inn, 3932 S. Ninth Street, when the car was rear-ended by a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 17-year-old Assaria boy.

Field was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, Forrester said.

The boy was cited for following too closely, Forrester said.

No damage was found after multiple shots were fired into the air early Saturday morning in southwest Salina.

Officers were sent to the 2100 block of Haskett Avenue at approximately 12:10 a.m. Saturday for the report of shots being fired, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

Surveillance video in the area showed a black SUV northbound on Haskett Avenue. A passenger in the SUV is seen firing approximately six shots into the air, Forrester said.

Several .45 caliber shell casings were located in the area. No damage from the shots being fired was located.

Forrester said this shooting incident is not connected to the multiple shootings and homicide that also occurred early Saturday morning in the 400 block of S. College Avenue in central Salina.

SPD: Shots fired early Saturday in SW Salina not related to homicide

A security supervisor got a sudsy surprise when he arrived for work at Kansas Wesleyan University on Saturday.

The supervisor told police that when he arrived at work, he discovered that the fountain in front of Pioneer Hall was full of soap bubbles.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that surveillance video shows three males wearing hoodies dumping soap into the fountain at 3:40 a.m. Saturday. One of the males was wearing a gray hoodie and the other two were wearing black hoodies.

Preliminary damage is estimated at $2,000, however, that amount may rise should Kansas Wesleyan need to replace the pump system, Forrester said.

 </figure>NOTE:&nbsp;This is one of a series of stories about members of Kansas Wesleyan University's Class of 2022.By JEAN KOZUBOWSKI KWUFor Celine&nbsp;Wetiba, it’s all about the adventure — trying new things, learning about different cultures and being involved.But when the graduating biomedical chemistry major took stock of her senior year at Kansas Wesleyan University, she realized she hadn’t gotten the full college experience: She was missing out on athletics. At that point, she joined the dance team to become a student-athlete.This was in addition to being an RA and president of the Coyote Activities Board, both for two years; being fundraising chair for the campus Multicultural Student Union; working three days a week at United Radiology; volunteering in the children’s ministry at her church, The Ark; and babysitting occasionally.She completed her demanding major in three years and hopes, after a gap year, to go to medical school. In short, she’s been a tremendous example of The Power of AND.“I love to be involved,”&nbsp;Wetiba&nbsp;said. “It’s so easy to be involved here (at KWU).“Anything I find interest in I try to dive into with an open mind, just to see if I like it. Most of the time I do. It’s hard not to be involved, at least for me.”She feels as if she missed out on a lot her first year. She came to KWU on an Eisenhower Scholarship, so she didn’t have to participate in sports or music, and she felt like something was missing. Then COVID-19 hit in March 2020 and the campus shut down for the rest of the academic year.“These past two years, I wanted to take it all in!” she said, of college life. “I didn’t get to experience this, and I’m already one year short because I’m graduating early.”She decided she didn’t want to miss out on anything in her college career.“The school gives you the opportunity to [participate in many things],”&nbsp;Wetiba&nbsp;said. “I said I could put my mind to it, and I did it.”With all she’s involved in, balancing her classes and activities can be difficult.“You can’t catch a break, but that’s OK because this is what I wanted to do,” she said. “So you just have to do it.”Like deciding to graduate in three years.She was fortunate, she said, that Goddard High School (where she went) offered dual credits, so she came to KWU with a head start.Her family lives in west Wichita, but they came to the U.S. about 12 years ago from Kenya, where&nbsp;Wetiba&nbsp;was born.Her goal is to exceed not just her own expectations, but her family’s expectations for her.“I just really want to be able to make my family proud, especially since my mom and dad did so much for me to be able to be here,” she said. “I get emotional, thinking about it.”Her freshman year, she went to a Multicultural Student Union meeting and there were “like four students,” she said.Now the MCSU has 30-plus active students, said Dr. Allen Smith, director of diversity and student success.“We couldn’t have done it without [Celine],” Smith said. “Her personality draws young people to her. She is a natural leader; people follow her. Most of all, she leads by example.”Hailey Vandevanter, student activities coordinator and resident director, agreed.“She’s always served as a leader and as a role model for younger students,” she said.For&nbsp;Wetiba’s gap year, she plans to stay in Salina, volunteer at her church, work, study for the MCATs she’ll take this summer and figure out how to keep in touch with friends, some of whom will move across the country.She intends to go to medical school in 2023, specializing in family practice and pediatrics.Holding a CNA license since she was 16 and working at United Radiology,&nbsp;Wetiba&nbsp;has some experience already in the medical field.“I feel like there’s so much more opportunity for me here, especially with the connections I’ve already made in the Salina community.”&nbsp;Wetiba&nbsp;said. “I want to take advantage of those opportunities as much as I can to maximize my efforts going into med school. Going back home would be like starting over.”It’s important for her to give back, both to her parents and to KWU.She said she’s proud she’ll be an alumna and plans to become involved with the Alumni Association.“Kansas Wesleyan has honestly done so much for me,”&nbsp;Wetiba&nbsp;said. “At a bigger school I couldn’t do as much as I’ve done or be in the positions I’m in.”She doesn’t feel as if she’s missed out on anything.
