Saturday through Friday APAC Shears of Salina will continue working on the City of Salina’s annual asphalt mill and inlay project. 

The schedule is as follows, weather permitting:

The work consists of milling the existing asphalt street surface 1.5” and replacing it with new asphalt to rehabilitate and preserve the pavement section. Permanent pavement markings will be placed shortly after the resurfacing.

The work on local streets will be completed with total closures, and residents will be given sufficient notice and accommodations. The work on arterial streets will be completed with lane closures. Motorists should expect modest delays and are encouraged to avoid the work zones altogether if possible.

The $916,000 project is a major component of the City of Salina's $4.7 million 2022 maintenance capital improvement program.

Salina Fire Dept. conducts promotion ceremony Friday

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a high-risk warning for West Nile virus infections (WNV) for north-central, south-central, northeast and southeast Kansas.

 Northwest and southwest Kansas are at moderate risk for WNV infections.

West Nile virus is the leading cause of mosquito-borne illness in the continental United States.&nbsp; It is most often spread to people through mosquito bites, but it is not spread from person to person. About 1 in 5 people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms. About 1 out of 150 infected people develop swelling of the brain or brain tissue and, in some cases, death. There are no vaccines or medications to treat WNV. People who have had West Nile virus before are considered immune.

“As more Kansans head outdoors this summer, it is important to know your risk and take action to prevent mosquito bites to protect you and your family against West Nile virus”,&nbsp;said Dr. Joan Duwve, State Health Officer.&nbsp;KDHE recommends the following prevention measures:

●Visit the KDHE WNV website weekly to learn about the current WNV risk level;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/1519/West-Nile-Virus-Risk-Level-Surveillance-">https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/1519/West-Nile-Virus-Risk-Level-Surveillance-</a>.

●When you are outdoors, use insect repellent containing an&nbsp;EPA-registered active ingredient&nbsp;on skin and clothing, including DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535. Follow the directions on the package.

●Many mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn. Be sure to use insect repellent and wear long sleeves and pants at these times or consider staying indoors during these hours.

●The elderly or those with a weakened immune system should consider limiting their exposure outside during dusk and dawn when the&nbsp;Culex&nbsp;species mosquitoes are most active.

●Make sure you have good screens on your windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out.

●Get rid of mosquito breeding sites by emptying standing water from flower pots, buckets and barrels. Change the water in pet dishes and replace the water in bird baths weekly. Drill holes in tire swings so water drains out. Keep children's wading pools empty and on their sides when they aren't being used.

●Horses can also be infected with WNV. Talk with your veterinarian about vaccinating your horses to protect them against WNV.

Most WNV infections occur in the late summer and early fall; so far there have not been any reported cases of WNV in Kansas in 2022.

It’s Christmas in July for Tony’s Pizza Events Center and the Salina Area United Way as they announce that the Second Annual Dueling Pianos Christmas will return on Dec. 17!

Presented by Tony’s Pizza Events Center, A Dueling Pianos Christmas, is a benefit for the Salina Area United Way’s 2023 Annual Campaign. In addition to the musical entertainment, a host of other activities are planned for the evening, including a full meal, silent and live auctions, and wine/whiskey pulls. The Salina Area United Way will receive a portion of ticket sales as well as all proceeds from the night’s activities.

The 2021 event was a massive success, raising over $20,000 for the Salina Area United Way. Salina Area United Way staff is currently seeking donations for silent and live auction items. Last year’s event featured 80 silent auction and five live auction items.

“We are excited to be able to partner with TPEC for the 2nd year on this event,” said Claire Ludes, executive director for the Salina Area United Way. “Last year was such a success and everyone truly enjoyed themselves. What a great way to celebrate Christmas and support the Salina Area United Way.”

A Dueling Pianos Christmas, will combine music, comedy and audience participation into a fast-paced and highly entertaining event. Songs are based completely on audience requests giving the show a unique atmosphere. No matter what, it will be a sing-along, laugh-along, clap-along party!

Entertainment will be provided by HiFi Productions, featuring Salina native Ryan McCall, member of regional favorite band Joe’s Pet Project.

Tickets for this event go on sale Wednesday 10 a.m. Platinum seating is $600 per table and includes tickets for eight guests, two drink tickets per guest, meals and entertainment. Second Annual Dueling Pianos Christmas to benefit local United Way

Sorenstam is regarded as one of the best female golfers in history. She won the first two US Opens that she competed in and has been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

“It is an honor to be able to watch so many amazing women professional golfers play at Salina Country Club for the Senior LPGA Championship and very exciting to have Annika Sorenstam playing with our BSB Pro-Am team!” said Carolyn Sichley, Bennington State Bank marketing officer.

The Bennington State Bank Pro-Am team players are Ellie Cobb from Salina, Abby Donovan from Concordia, Ida Linufvudh from Sweden, and Zoe Norton from Salina.

Cobb graduated from Salina Central in 2018 where in her senior year of golf went on to win the Class 5A state golf tournament by 8 strokes. After high school, Cobb continued her golfing career at Drury where she majored in marketing and finance. She&nbsp;graduated from Drury this last fall and is now pursuing her master’s degree at Saint Louis University.

“I’m excited to watch how some of the all-time greats in Women’s golf navigate the course I grew up on, while getting to play alongside them! Thank you to Bennington State Bank for this incredible opportunity!” said Cobb.

Donovan is currently a freshman at Kansas Wesleyan University pursuing a degree in Business Management while also being a member of the women’s golf team. Graduating from Concordia High School last year, Donovan placed second in the Class 4A state tournament. She became the third player in Concordia girls golf history to be a four-time state placer.

“I feel very fortunate and thankful to be a part of this wonderful event. I am excited for the learning experience and making lifelong memories,” said Donovan.

Linufvudh is currently a sophomore at Bethany College and competed in the NAIA National Championship in Oklahoma City this past spring, placing 21st overall out of 92 total golfers from around the country. At the conclusion of this year’s tournament year, Linufvudh set six new program records. Linufvudh lives in Balsta, Sweden and will be traveling back to Salina to play in this event to fulfill her lifelong dream of playing with World Golf Hall of Fame member Sorenstam who is also from Sweden.

“I am from a small town right outside Stockholm, Sweden. What I am looking forward to most about playing in this pro-am is to get inspired in my golf. Also to have the opportunity to meet the most legendary women’s golf players that have made history in this sport,” said Lihufvudh about the tournament.

Norton graduated from Salina South this past spring and will be continuing her education this fall at Kansas State University majoring in mechanical engineering. While at Salina South she played all four years on the women’s varsity team and made state all&nbsp; four years going on to receiving an individual medalist award in her junior and senior year. Norton is active in The First Tee of Salina as a participant and coach, was named a Governor’s Scholar, and received Kansas State Scholar academic awards while attending Salina South.

“I am looking forward to playing with Annika Sorenstam and being able to watch great golf. I have been excited for the Senior LPGA Championship since the announcement of the location at Salina Country Club. I am excited to play alongside and watch the legends in the game of golf,” Norton said.

BSB '22 Senior LPGA Championship title sponsor at Salina Country Club

A river outing didn't go quite as planned Thursday afternoon at Salina's Bill Burke Park.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that two people were trying to launch a boat into the Smoky Hill River at Bill Burke Park at approximately 3:30 p.m. Thursday. While doing so, they neglected to put the 2003 Ford F150 they were driving into park while not in the pickup. The pickup and boat trailer rolled into the river and became submerged, Forrester said.

The Salina Fire Department and a local wrecker service responded and were able to pull the pickup and trailer out of the river.

Forrester said one of the people attempting to launch the boat fled the scene before police arrived as he had an active warrant. Officers are still looking for the man, Forrester said.

Pickup, trailer become submerged during boat launch at Bill Burke Park

On July 13, officers with the Salina Police Department responded to the First Baptist Church, 834 Lewis, Salina, in regards to a burglary. 

An employee arrived at the church and discovered a window panel had been pushed in and was damaged. After reviewing surveillance video, it was found that the suspect gained entry into the church at approximately 3:29 a.m. The suspect entered through the window and property was stolen from inside.

 </figure>CrimestoppersOn July 13, officers with the Salina Police Department responded to the First Baptist Church, 834 Lewis, Salina, in regards to a burglary. An employee arrived at the church and discovered a window panel had been pushed in and was damaged. Scorching temperatures expected Friday

My husband and I have a beginner emergency fund set aside, and we’re working on paying off $30,000 in credit card debt and two cars in Baby Step 2. He would also like us to start putting money aside for a couple of trips and a few other things we have always wanted. This makes me nervous, because we have made so much progress over the last year in getting control of our finances, paying off debt and living on a budget. I understand wanting something to look forward to, but I would hate to see us slow down when we are doing so well. How do you feel about this?

But getting out of debt, and having control of your finances should come first. Remember when you were a kid, and you had to finish your dinner or clean up your room before going out to play? TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued several public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae.&nbsp;

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. A&nbsp;Hazard status&nbsp;indicates a&nbsp;harmful algal bloom is&nbsp;present, and&nbsp;extreme conditions exist

●It is recommended that either a portion of the lake or the entire lake or zone, be closed to the public.

●Recreation is discouraged in the lake or zone, including, at lake manager direction, closing the lake or zone to the public.

●In some cases, the adjacent shoreland should be avoided or closed as well. Actual setback distances will be determined on a site-specific basis, if necessary.

A&nbsp;warning status&nbsp;indicates that conditions are unsafe for human and pet exposure.&nbsp; Contact with the waterbody should be avoided.&nbsp;

When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:&nbsp;

●Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.

●Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.

●Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.

●If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

 ●Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A&nbsp;watch status&nbsp;means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.&nbsp;

During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:&nbsp;

●Signage will be posted at all public access locations.

●Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.

●Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.

●Swimming, wading, skiing, and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.

●Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.&nbsp;

●Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.&nbsp;

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.&nbsp;

Local, area bodies of water under blue-green algae advisories

Since the Salina Educational Automotive Museum of America opened downtown in February, more than 3,000 people have used the museum’s virtual welding simulator, on loan from Salina Area Technical College.

But there was a catch: While the museum’s employees had been trained on how to run the simulator, most of them had never welded in real life.

So Wednesday morning, museum Executive Director Michelle Peck and Director of Education Matthew Tyler Delano Miller-Wells brought several high school students who work at the museum part-time to Salina Tech’s welding shop for some hands-on experience.

After spending a few minutes explaining welding theory and safety, Salina Tech welding instructor Eric Vannoy got everyone into welding jackets, gloves and helmet, and they headed out to the shop where he began demonstrating some welds.

After they’d practiced for a few minutes, Vannoy showed the group a bin of scrap metal, and invited them to use their imaginations.

“I was a little hesitant at first, but this was really fun,” said Brody Dooley. “I got to where I was making some OK welds. And now that I’ve done it, I think I’ll be better at helping people use the simulator.”

“I was a little scared at first – it’s molten metal, and that’s kind of scary,” said Brady Hemmer. “I learned a lot today, and it’s going to help me with the simulator.”

“This experience and opportunity is really cool,” Peck said. “Our partnership with Salina Tech has been great so far, and we’re finding new ways to work together.”

Two children were transported to Salina Regional Health Center after a two-vehicle wreck in west-central Salina late Thursday afternoon.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 1980 Chevrolet pickup driven by Gary W. Stout, 64, of Salina, entered W. Crawford Street just east of S. Broadway Boulevard and failed to yield to oncoming traffic. Stout swerved to avoid oncoming traffic and struck on the driver's side a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica driven by Kristina L. Hill, 38, of Salina.

The collision occurred at approximately 4:37 p.m.

Hill complained of pain, but was not transported to Salina Regional because of her injuries, the highway patrol report noted. Two children in the Pacifica, a three-year-old girl and an eight-year-old girl from Salina, suffered suspected minor injuries and were transported to Salina Regional. All three were properly restrained, according to the report.

Stout, who also was properly restrained, also suffered suspected minor injuries but was not transported.

Kansas Wesleyan University has announced&nbsp;the hiring of Kay Quinn as assistant director of stewardship and university events. 

“We are excited to have Kay join our team,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “She brings strong event, marketing and fundraising skills and solid regional connections that will be a great fit for Kansas Wesleyan.”

A native of Bennington, Quinn spent 21 years in Gainesville, Fla., where she attended graduate school at the University of Florida, served for 10 years as managing editor and director of communications for Oxendine Publishing, helping to found Student Leader, a national campus publication with a circulation of 115,000. She later owned a boutique public relations firm that specialized in strategic planning, media relations and image management.

Quinn returned to the Salina area in 2010. She handled all marketing and promotions for the Smoky Hill River Festival and provided development support for the festival and the Smoky Hill Museum for more than a decade.

Quinn’s work will support admissions, advancement and events across campus.
