28th Judicial District commission announces interview schedule

The mission of the Salina Public Schools is to be the best place to learn and work by embracing challenges, creating belonging, fostering pride and inspiring hope. In pursuit of that mission, the board of education approved a 1.7 percent increase to the base salary, along with step movement as allowed under the salary schedules. 

The average increase for all staff is projected to be 3.1 percent for 2022-23 school year.

“We value our employees’ work and commitment that help make Salina Public Schools the best place to learn and work,” said Linn Exline, superintendent.

For a second year, the board of education approved a $1,500 retention incentive pay plan for all staff in regular, ongoing positions. The $1,500 retention incentive pay plan, funded by federal ESSER dollars, encourages staff to continue working with USD 305.

Salina’s popular Comic Con returns to Tony’s Pizza Events Center this weekend. This year’s event includes three special guests, cosplays contests, and plenty of shopping.

Best known to fans as Zhane, the original silver power ranger from Saban's Power Rangers in Space 1998. Oklahoma native Nimmo is also known for his roles in Pleasantville, American Indian Graffiti: This Thing Life, Dude, Where’s My Car?, and Saved by the Bell: The New Class. Justin has also been known to do look-alike work for Brad Pitt.

Nelson is best known for having played the iconic character of Darth Vader in the Special Edition re-release of the original Star Wars trilogy as well as in the Rebel Assault II and Dark Forces games from LucasArts.

Andrew, who began playing Vader for Lucasfilm in 1994, has portrayed the infamous dark lord for film, commercials, television shows, print, games, and live appearances. He has managed to spend more time in the official Vader costume than any other actor.

Fernandes is the only living Tusken Raider from the original 1977 Star Wars (later renamed Episode IV: A New Hope). He was one of two animal trainers who worked with the elephant which played the Bantha in the desert scenes.

Vendors will be on hand for attendees who want to buy, sell, and trade comic books, toys and pop culture memorabilia. Cosplay contests are Saturday at 4 p.m. for adults 16 and up; Sunday at 3 p.m. for kids 15 and under. The grand prize for this year’s adult cosplay contest is $1,000.

Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. - $11 for ages 9 and up, 8 and under is free with paying adult.

Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. - $9 for ages 9 and up, 8 and under is free with paying adult.

The administration&nbsp;continued its&nbsp;ongoing&nbsp;commitment&nbsp;to&nbsp;addressing the&nbsp;child care&nbsp;shortage&nbsp;by including&nbsp;almost&nbsp;$1&nbsp;million&nbsp;specifically&nbsp;for nonprofits that boost the supply&nbsp;of child&nbsp;care options.&nbsp;

“It’s no surprise that the best solutions to the issues facing Kansas communities often come from local nonprofits rooted in those very communities,”&nbsp;said Governor Kelly.&nbsp;“That’s why we’re doing everything possible to lift up the work of our nonprofits through programs like the Community Service Tax Credits.”&nbsp;

CSP tax credits have been issued in the Sunflower State since 1994. The program provides a 70% tax credit to qualified donors in rural communities (populations less than 15,000) and a 50% tax credit in larger communities. The credits are a direct deduction from the donor’s state tax obligation. For example,&nbsp;a donor making a $1,000 gift in a rural community receives a $700 tax credit when they file their state taxes, making the net cost to the donor only $300.&nbsp;

This year,&nbsp;CSP will assist five different counties with building new or upgrading existing childcare facilities.&nbsp;Communities&nbsp;statewide&nbsp;will&nbsp;be assisted in their efforts to&nbsp;improve&nbsp;healthcare&nbsp;facilities&nbsp;or&nbsp;purchase&nbsp;new diagnostic&nbsp;equipment;&nbsp;create&nbsp;housing options for low-income&nbsp;or homeless&nbsp;Kansans;&nbsp;update&nbsp;libraries;&nbsp;expand access to the arts&nbsp;and cultural attractions;&nbsp;provide&nbsp;new&nbsp;shelters&nbsp;for&nbsp;foster children&nbsp;and&nbsp;victims of domestic and sexual violence;&nbsp;and&nbsp;design&nbsp;innovative public&nbsp;gathering spaces.&nbsp;

DICKINSON COUNTY —A 17-year old juvenile who allegedly issued severe threats to harm and kill people is now in custody, according to a statement from Dickinson County Sheriff Jerry Davis on social media.

 As a precaution, victims in a previous case involving the juvenile, members of the public at the Chapman ball field complex and the Chapman swimming pool were notified and those facilities were evacuated after the threats were made.

The juvenile was described as a 17-year-old white boy, approximately 5-foot-10, 140 pounds with shaggy brown hair. He was last seen wearing a black and white sweat shirt on foot near 1400 Ave. and Fair Road south of Abilene at about 9 p.m. Monday.

Assisting in the search were the Dickinson County Sheriff's Department, Chapman police, Abilene police, Saline County Sheriff's Office, Junction City police and the Kansas Highway Patrol. The juvenile could not be located.&nbsp;

During the search the Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter unit, Sheriff's Office K-9 and drone units and a Saline County Sheriff's Office mobile forward-looking infrared unit were utilized. Dickinson County Fire District No. 1 assisted in manning a mobile command post.

The juvenile subject displayed a small pistol in at least one of the videos he recorded on Snapchat. The Dickinson County Sheriff's Office said the juvenile was considered armed and dangerous.

For his inaugural season as the new music director and conductor of the Salina Symphony, Yaniv Segal has cooked up what he believes will be a well-balanced musical buffet.

Segal, a Michigan resident who was selected from five finalists for the position after a worldwide search that took nearly two years, compares each concert in a symphonic season to a “fine meal.”

“Some meals you’re going to taste something new, and some meals will be something you’ve tasted before,” he said. “The goal is to be diverse, properly balanced and make sure there’s something for everyone.”

Since being informed of his selection in early May, Segal has faced the challenge of putting together a diverse and balanced season in just two months, one that not only would provide “something for everyone,” but would serve as an introduction to Segal’s vision for the Salina Symphony’s future.

“I think I’ve achieved that for this first season,” he said. “We have a canon of masterworks, lesser-known works by newer composers and crossover adventures.”

The opening concert of the Salina Symphony’s 2022-23 season, titled Rise Up, will be performed Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. in the Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

The concert, a mixture of classic and contemporary music, will open with Patrick Harlin’s majestic Earthrise – based on the iconic photograph taken from NASA’s Apollo 8 spacecraft – followed by&nbsp; Violin Concerto in D minor, Op.47 by Jean Sibelius, featuring violinist and Kansas City native Maria Ioudenitch.

“The opening piece by Patrick Harlin is very fresh, just having its world premiere a few months ago,” Segal said.

The concert will conclude with a performance of one of the most iconic symphonies of all time, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor.

The other five concerts in the season, all to be performed in the Stiefel Theatre, are as follows.

Romance (Nov. 6, 4 p.m.): a concert of romantic music that will feature Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro overture, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet fantasy overture, contemporary composer Gabriel Prokofiev’s suite from his genre-defying crossover album Breaking Screens, and an original composition by Segal himself, Woodbridge, Summer of 2010,&nbsp; which he wrote for his wedding and recently orchestrated.

“It’s very personal to me,” Segal said. “I always intended for it to be orchestrated, so during the pandemic, I finally had the time to turn it into an orchestral piece.”

The Nutcracker (Dec. 10, 7 p.m., Dec. 11, 4 p.m.): Tchaikovsky’s timeless ballet tells the story of a young girl’s Christmas Eve dream set to one of the most beautiful scores ever written. Performed in partnership with Ballet Salina.

Adrienne Allen, executive director of the Salina Symphony, said the ballet will be performed every few years during the holiday season.

“We are thrilled to present The Nutcracker with Ballet Salina this year,” she said. “The Christmas Festival will be back next season.”

Journey (Jan. 29, 4 p.m.): features Grazyna Bacewicz’s Symphony No. 3,&nbsp; written by a Polish composer who wrote under the terror of Soviet rule. This will be followed by a multimedia presentation of Peter Boyer’s Ellis Island: The Dream of America. Produced in partnership with Theatre Salina, Ellis Island celebrates the powerful and inspiring stories of people who left their homelands in search of a better life.

Segal said actual texts from European immigrants who came through Ellis Island during the last century will be read aloud by local actors, accompanied by music performed before historical images projected on a screen.

“It’s a fabulous composition, so moving, even more so when it’s done live with visuals and a big range of characters,” Segal said.

Ellis Island is particularly personal to Segal, the son of Polish and Israeli immigrants and the first generation of his family to be born in the United States.

All You Need is Love (March 5, 4 p.m.): a pops concert featuring musical favorites from Beauty and the Beast, Les Misérables, and Star Wars, as well as classics by Bizet, Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky. The concert concludes with an orchestral tribute to The Beatles, Love is All You Need. Special guest will be mezzo-soprano Samantha Rose Williams.

Passion (May 7, 4 p.m.): a celebration of powerful female voices that includes Jennifer Higdon’s Cold Mountain Suite, Jules Massenet’s Meditation from Thais, Georges Bizet’s immortal Carmen, Suite No. 1, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, Op. 35.

Allen said Segal has planned a “wonderfully diverse season” that will inspire both musicians and audience members, and she looks forward to what he has in store for future seasons.

“We have so much to look forward to under Yaniv’s artistic leadership,” she said. “He brings a fresh new perspective, as well as a vision for potential new projects and partnerships, as we move into the next era of the Salina Symphony.”

Segal said he was thrilled to be selected as the new music director and conductor of the Salina Symphony.

When Segal was picked as one of the five finalists and came to Salina to conduct his audition concert in January, he said he not only was impressed with the performance skills of the Symphony musicians but also at the organization’s dedication to enhancing the cultural life of their community.

“There’s real community involvement here, and that’s exciting to me,” he said. “I’m thrilled to join the Salina Symphony family as music director and to present beautiful, moving and inspiring music for the greater Salina community.”

Segal said he already is thinking ahead to the next season and beyond.

“There’s a lot of pieces I want to share, as well as guest performers and composers I want to bring to town,” he said.

Segal’s first Salina Symphony season: Something for everyone

So far, runners from 22 states have registered for the new Salina Crossroads Marathon.

The race, which is scheduled for Nov. 5 in Salina, will serve as a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. The event also will include a half marathon, marathon relay, half marathon relay, and 4.01 K races to provide other options for runners and walkers to participate in this new event. 

Additionally, 100 percent of the race entry fees will go to support youth sports in Saline County, according to Daniel Craig, race director.

Craig told Salina Post in an earlier interview that the course was designed to also have spectator options.

"When we developed the course we worked hard to incorporate activation areas where we will have aid stations (water, Gatorade, snacks), music, and places for people to cheer on the runners. We will have maps of the course showing the places along the course where it will be easiest for people to be at to cheer on the runners," he said.

There also is a need for volunteers. Craig told Salina Post that volunteers are needed for the following.

During that time period, the average maximum temperature was 89 degrees, which was 0.9 of a degree above normal, according to information from the National Weather Service in Wichita. Additionally, the average minimum temperature was 66.1 degrees, which was 1.9 degrees above normal.

The highest temperature during June 2022 was 103 degrees on June 13, while the lowest was 48 degrees on June 2. The all-time high for June in Salina was 114 degrees on June 25, 1911, while the all-time low was 38 degrees on June 4, 1897, according to the National Weather Service.

Additionally, precipitation for Salina was just under normal. An official total of 3.74 inches of rain was reported during June 2022. That was 0.01 of an inch under normal precipitation for June, the weather service noted.

The all-time maximum precipitation for June was 13.62 inches in 1905, while the all-time minimum ws 0.18 of an inch in 1980.

The average wind speed in Salina during June was 11.2 mph. The highest wind speed (45 mph) and highest wind gust (56 mph) both were recorded on June 21.
