ABILENE - For the fourth year in a row, Abilene has finished in the Top 10 of the Best Historic Small Town category in USA Today's 10Best Readers’ Choice contest.

Abilene was the only Kansas finalist in the 2022 contest.

Although Abilene was in the top spot through much of the public voting period, it slipped to second place in the final days when rankings were hidden.

“While we hoped to bring home the gold, coming in second in a nationwide contest is quite impressive,” said Julie Roller Weeks, Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau director. “This award speaks to Abilene’s reputation as a great place to visit and celebrates the community’s efforts to preserve and promote its history.”

The top 10 winners in the 2022 Best Historic Small Town category are as follows.

Additionally, Abilene came in at No. 4 in 2021, No. 2 in 2020, and No. 8 in 2019.

The announcement of Abilene's ranking adds to the list of good things happening there, Roller Weeks noted in a news release.

In May, Abilene received a&nbsp;<a href="https://abilenekansas.org/blog/2022/05/13/good-news-from-abilene-kansas" target="_blank">$22,000 Attraction Development Grant</a>&nbsp;to construct the World’s Largest Belt Buckle. Its Visitors Guide received a&nbsp;<a href="https://abilenekansas.org/news/2022/05/26/abilene-visitors-guide-receives-national-award" target="_blank">Communicator Awards Award of Distinction</a>, and Travel + Leisure named Abilene one of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.travelandleisure.com/trip-ideas/best-small-towns-for-summer-vacation-in-us?fbclid=IwAR1NkONsG6D-sJmQVyP6zwHMJbrKELv-HO7uhYT-w_bEQo4Owrp_C2-JFa0" target="_blank">Best Small Towns for a Summer Vacation</a>.

Multiple children have been seen crossing roadways without any regard for traffic. These scooters are required to follow all traffic laws. The last thing anyone wants is for someone to get hurt, so please talk to your kids about driving safe before letting them operate.

These scooters have recently been seen riding on Highway 24. If a police officer sees this, they will be stopped. It is extremely important to talk to your children about where they can ride these.

NWS: Temperatures nearing 100 for part of the area Monday

Nationwide, state education departments face a drastic shortage of K–12 teachers. Although the focus is on these last several years of stressful teaching during the pandemic, this decline in teachers and students desiring to enter teaching began several decades ago.&nbsp; Even without the upheaval caused by necessary and required social distancing, hybrid and fully online course delivery and thousands of missing students, the numbers of new teachers has been declining due to a wider range of measures that have taken away the professional authority of teachers. This decline in teachers varies by grade levels and by subject. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

The teacher shortage in special education started when the mandate for wider special education began and teacher training never caught up. Shortages in other fields became severe with the implementation of the disastrous No Child Left Behind legislation supported by both political parties, imposing proficiency levels and mandating 100 percent success by 2014. This was as insane as mandating in medicine that everyone would survive hospitalization. But political action threatened schools with penalties that in turn resulted in teachers losing much of their professional responsibility. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

The critical metric is the number of new teacher licenses or certificates awarded by the state departments of education each year, and the numbers plummeted. In Kansas, smaller schools were never able to all provide licensed physics and chemistry teachers, but this downturn in new teacher graduates resulted in shortages in nearly all subject areas over time, and well before the pandemic. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

The standardization and assessment movement has likewise taken away other professional decision-making from teachers. To meet pressure for higher graduation rates, many school districts have ordered teachers to inflate grades. The public has likewise changed. Before, if a student got in trouble at school, they got in trouble at home. Now, the parents often come in to complain the next day, and administrators often provide no teacher defense. Again, students see this. Fewer enter teaching.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

The Kansas State Legislature ended K-12 teacher tenure a decade ago. Previously, a teacher had three years on probation to show their professional skill and could be dismissed without being given a reason. Now Kansas teachers can be non-renewed anytime without “due process.” This resulted in a further decline in teacher production: half of my future biology student teachers came in and changed to non-teaching fields. Some Kansas districts write due process into teacher’s contracts. But the college student who looks at potentially becoming a teacher realizes the risks of taking on house payments if they can lose their job for no stated reason. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Our failure to address the science teacher shortage has led to a decades-long decline in U.S. science literacy across all STEM fields. As a result, the U.S. lost its lead in producing STEM graduates in 2007. American scientists no longer published the most science research after 2017. We are no longer the country with the most new patents after 2019.&nbsp; And nearly half of our current university majors in STEM fields are foreign students, coming over from stronger K–12 science education overseas. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

It is the decisions now being made in state boards of education across this country that will determine if we will turn around this decline by increasing K-12 science requirements and recruiting more science teachers with higher qualifications, or if we will drop to the ignorance level of the undeveloped world.

Although the focus is on these last several years of stressful teaching during the pandemic, this decline in teachers and students desiring to enter teaching began several decades ago.&nbsp; Even without the upheaval caused by necessary and required social distancing, hybrid and fully online course delivery and thousands of missing students, the numbers of new teachers has been declining due to a wider range of measures that have taken away the professional authority of teachers. This decline in teachers varies by grade levels and by subject. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;The teacher shortage in special education started when the mandate for wider special education began and teacher training never caught up. Shortages in other fields became severe with the implementation of the disastrous No Child Left Behind legislation supported by both political parties, imposing proficiency levels and mandating 100 percent success by 2014. This was as insane as mandating in medicine that everyone would survive hospitalization. ED. FRONTLINES: Teacher shortage is a decades-long problem

Cozy burgers named the best in Kansas by Reader's Digest

Kansas farm families spent Father’s Day weekend in the combine, a wheat harvest tradition. Hot, dry, windy weather signaled the continued rapid progression of harvest across the state. Some south-central Kansas producers have sunny harvest results to share while empathizing with farmers elsewhere that did not catch the same beneficial rains throughout the growing season. No matter the final yield or the holiday, farm families are working together to maximize the 2022 Kansas wheat crop.

James Mosiman had his Arizona landlord in the combine with him when Kansas Wheat staff stopped by the harvest field near Walton in Harvey County. Harvest results are good with yields at 53 to 78 bushels per acre, 14 percent moisture and test weights heavy at 61 to 62 pounds per bushel. In the next field, son Justin was running the air-seeder to plant double-crop soybeans into the wheat stubble. The cutting and planting crew were joined by a load of kids from Boulder and Kansas City and their grandfather, all of whom piled out and climbed into the cab. The grandfather remarked the field trip helped his grandkids see where their bread comes from, yet another family harvest tradition.

In the same area near Walton, the Nuss family, alongside Troy Smith, worked together this weekend to get wheat in Harvey County harvested and straw baled for Smith’s cattle. The operation delivers straight to Ardent Mills in nearby Newton, making growing quality wheat a priority. Harvest results thus far are strong with yields at 70 bushels per acre, moisture at 11.2 to 14 percent, test weights heavy at 62 to 63 pounds per bushel and protein at 10.5 to 12 percent.

Back in February - after an excruciating Kansas City Chiefs game - the family went and tinkered with a 1968 Case 660 combine sitting in the treeline. After taking out their frustration, they got it started. Motivated, they restored the machine to running condition, driving to southwestern Missouri to pick up parts from a collector happy to see them used. After sitting idle for close to 30 years, the old Case combine returned to the harvest field for a few passes.

Bonding over machinery and splitting up harvest and fieldwork responsibilities is a common theme in June. From the first day of harvest on Friday, Koby Royer, a senior at Kansas State University, was operating the combine while his older brother Alek&nbsp;ran the grain truck to and from the elevator. Koby helps out on the family operation in Yoder, Royer Farms, while working an internship in nearby Hutchinson.

Their morale is high, thanks to results from fields like the one they were custom-cutting in Reno County on Friday - 50 bushels per acre, 64.5 pounds per bushel test weight and 13 percent protein. The brothers are thankful for the moisture they received but empathize with farmers further west that did not see the rain when needed.

Hayden Peirce&nbsp;is also balancing helping out on the family farm near Castelton and working a summer internship. Starting work at six in the morning in town, he can finish up responsibilities as an intern before hopping into the combine mid-afternoon. Peirce is also a college senior, pursuing a degree in biological agricultural engineering from Kansas State University.

Using the protein testing in the cab, Peirce is seeing high protein, ranging from 11 to 16 percent. Moisture is dry - 10 to 13 percent - and test weights are above 60 pounds per bushel. Yields are coming in the 40’s and 50’s bushels per acre. He praised the variety KS Hatchett, from the Kansas Wheat Alliance, for its drought tolerance, which was put to the ultimate test this year. He compared harvest results to Zenda, also from the Kansas Wheat Alliance, and Hatchett outperformed it.

Harvest is truly a family affair with Peirce running the combine while his cousins man the grain cart and semi and his oldest brother operates the planter - all pivotal pieces to getting all farm work done in June.

 </figure>By JULIA DEBES Kansas WheatKansas farm families spent Father’s Day weekend in the combine, a wheat harvest tradition. Hot, dry, windy weather signaled the continued rapid progression of harvest across the state. Some south-central Kansas producers have sunny harvest results to share while empathizing with farmers elsewhere that did not catch the same beneficial rains throughout the growing season. No matter the final yield or the holiday, farm families are working together to maximize the 2022 Kansas wheat crop. James Mosiman had his Arizona landlord in the combine with him when Kansas Wheat staff stopped by the harvest field near Walton in Harvey County. Harvest results are good with yields at 53 to 78 bushels per acre, 14 percent moisture and test weights heavy at 61 to 62 pounds per bushel. In the next field, son Justin was running the air-seeder to plant double-crop soybeans into the wheat stubble. The cutting and planting crew were joined by a load of kids from Boulder and Kansas City and their grandfather, all of whom piled out and climbed into the cab. The grandfather remarked the field trip helped his grandkids see where their bread comes from, yet another family harvest tradition. In the same area near Walton, the Nuss family, alongside Troy Smith, worked together this weekend to get wheat in Harvey County harvested and straw baled for Smith’s cattle. The operation delivers straight to Ardent Mills in nearby Newton, making growing quality wheat a priority. Harvest results thus far are strong with yields at 70 bushels per acre, moisture at 11.2 to 14 percent, test weights heavy at 62 to 63 pounds per bushel and protein at 10.5 to 12 percent. Back in February - after an excruciating Kansas City Chiefs game - the family went and tinkered with a 1968 Case 660 combine sitting in the treeline. After taking out their frustration, they got it started. Motivated, they restored the machine to running condition, driving to southwestern Missouri to pick up parts from a collector happy to see them used. After sitting idle for close to 30 years, the old Case combine returned to the harvest field for a few passes. Bonding over machinery and splitting up harvest and fieldwork responsibilities is a common theme in June. From the first day of harvest on Friday, Koby Royer, a senior at Kansas State University, was operating the combine while his older brother Alek&nbsp;ran the grain truck to and from the elevator. Koby helps out on the family operation in Yoder, Royer Farms, while working an internship in nearby Hutchinson. Their morale is high, thanks to results from fields like the one they were custom-cutting in Reno County on Friday - 50 bushels per acre, 64.5 pounds per bushel test weight and 13 percent protein. The brothers are thankful for the moisture they received but empathize with farmers further west that did not see the rain when needed. Hayden Peirce&nbsp;is also balancing helping out on the family farm near Castelton and working a summer internship. Starting work at six in the morning in town, he can finish up responsibilities as an intern before hopping into the combine mid-afternoon. Peirce is also a college senior, pursuing a degree in biological agricultural engineering from Kansas State University. Using the protein testing in the cab, Peirce is seeing high protein, ranging from 11 to 16 percent. Moisture is dry - 10 to 13 percent - and test weights are above 60 pounds per bushel. Yields are coming in the 40’s and 50’s bushels per acre. He praised the variety KS Hatchett, from the Kansas Wheat Alliance, for its drought tolerance, which was put to the ultimate test this year. He compared harvest results to Zenda, also from the Kansas Wheat Alliance, and Hatchett outperformed it. Harvest is truly a family affair with Peirce running the combine while his cousins man the grain cart and semi and his oldest brother operates the planter - all pivotal pieces to getting all farm work done in June. Day 5: Kansas wheat harvest report

On the day before Juneteenth, a crowd braved a blazing Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Plaza to honor a man none had ever met.

Dana Adams was a young Black man who was lynched in Salina in 1893. No one was ever arrested for the lynching. Saturday's event concluded two years of work by the Dana Adams Project 1893 Coalition to make Adams' story widely known.

The community remembrance event began with a Mercy Luncheon at 1 p.m. that was organized by the North Salina Community Development organization with entertainment provided by the Bantu Drumming Group and Daisy Kabagarama.

A ceremony that led to the unveiling of a permanent marker in remembrance Adams began at 3 p.m.

The Rev. Delores 'Dee' J. Williamston, a member of the Coalition for The Dana Adams Project 1893, told those assembled that 23 people had been documented as being lynched in Kansas. This day, however, was dedicated to Adams. The event was filled with prayer, song, poetry, and a proclamation reading.

"This marker commemorates a very sad, horrendous event. It is a reminder of the biblical sinking sand foundation of slavery and resentment upon which this country was built. As a historical marker, it should be an uncomfortable place to stand and ponder. The Dana Adams Project, under the wider auspices of the Equal Justice Initiative has worked hard to fill in the blanks in our American history," Salina Mayor Trent Davis told the crowd. "Yet, as a historical marker, it can serve as the second cornerstone as this little piece of America seeks to rebuild its foundation, building on the solid rocks of education, acknowledgement, understanding, and reconciliation. It is an opportunity for our community and country to right its original wrong and re-invent itself as everything wonderful that our flag has ever stood for."

Davis continued, "This is, indeed, a day to wave the red, white, and blue, along with the red, black, and green, and all the other colors of the fabric that make up America."

Not often, Davis said, are there second chances to get something right.

"Let's take this opportunity to come together and be the change that is desperately needed. The day of Dana Adams' lynching was a very sad day, but today marks a day full of much hope and forgiveness," he said.

Sandy Beverly, also a member of the Coalition for The Dana Adams Project 1893, acknowledged that there was more work to do.

"I know that our work is not done. We have more work to do, but if those of us collectively here can join our power, our strength, and our positivity together, we can get things done," Beverly said.

Sheryl Wilson, executive director of the Kansas Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, was the guest speaker for Saturday's event. Wilson told the crowd that when she was asked to speak at the event, she was honored, but also stunned.

"When I heard the name of the gentleman who was lynched, I was stunned. Like many of you, of course, I was unfamiliar with this story, like many of you who live in this community. But the thing that I was stuck on was his last name. Adams is my maiden name," Wilson said. "Now I have no idea, and I have not begun the search to see whether there's any relation, but I believe, no matter what, I do believe that this is not a coincidence. This was meant to be."

Additionally, Wilson noted the earlier mention of the significance of Caldwell Plaza and the plaza's namesake, educator Robert Caldwell, who was Salina's first Black mayor. She said her grandmother's maiden name was Caldwell.

"So I just feel like none of this is coincidental," she said.

Although Adams was born during the post-Civil War Reconstruction Era, a time when Blacks, now free, began being able to buy land, own businesses, vote, and even run for office, the societal climate was much different by the time he was an adult.

"All of that was systematically being dismantled by the time Dana Adams became an adult. There was a reign of terror on Black people at that time to take that back, and that is what the hand of white supremacy did," Wilson said. "When you think about how that happened, it speaks to the dehumanization of Black people. The value of being Black was being questioned once again since slavery."

Williams also talked about the trauma that is passed down through the generations after a lynching. She said she couldn't imagine what Dana Adams' father suffered, including being given only $2 after suing for the wrongful death of his son. 

"The trauma affiliated with how we transcend beyond what some other group of people might think we're worth is something that we constantly have had to negotiate and renegotiate throughout the generations. The trauma people deal with today is rooted in the knowledge of their perceived worth that on some scale still is, as I've said, something we're having to deal with today," she said.

Williams talked about how that generational trauma has affected her, causing her to fear for her two grown sons who are doing nothing more than living their lives.

"People want to know that they are treated fair and equitably in their communities," she said.

"As we celebrate Juneteenth in this community, I am reminded of a quote by visual artist, activist, and academic Lilla Watson. She said, 'If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.' So to me, that translates to nobody's free until we are all free," Williams said.

She continued, "By marking this life that was tragically lost in this horrific way, we are working together toward liberation of this community from the white supremacy that once supressed this story from being told. We began to heal generational trauma held by this black community and we demand justice be a reality for this community and serve all that live in it.

"And so, with that, I just think about the ways that we got here.	I just know that in this time, when all of this has become part of the nomenclature, before Black Lives Matter. Before Black is Beautiful. Before Black Power. Before civil rights was a movement. Before Brown vs. Board of Education. There was Jim Crow and Jim Crow came at a time and took the life of Dana Adams," Williams said. "And again, I quote those that said it before me, 'If we do not know our history, we are bound and destine to repeat it.' And so, therefore, the knowledge that we have collectively as a community, I hope we take this and use it as a tool so that we can all work toward our liberation together.

MANHATTAN —&nbsp;More than 4,120 Kansas State University students have earned semester honors for their academic performance in the spring 2022 semester. Students earning a grade point average for the semester of 3.75 or above on at least 12 graded credit hours receive semester honors along with commendations from their deans. The honors also are recorded on their permanent academic records.&nbsp; &nbsp;
