Chamber seeks volunteers for Leadsled Spectacular

The Rolling Hills Zoo (RHZ) family is grieving the loss of Uzazi, their male southern white rhino, who was the last of the original rhinos that arrived at RHZ in 1995.

At 30 years old, Uzazi began developing age related issues which were not responding to treatment. RHZ animal care staff and veterinarian have been monitoring his health for the past several months, but sadly his quality of life was declining rapidly. It was decided that humanly euthanizing him was the kindest option available.

Born on Nov. 20, 1991, at San Diego Wild Animal Park, Uzazi moved to Salina in 1995 and was one of the first animals to call RHZ home.

“Of the original group of rhinos, Uzazi was the youngest, and one of his favorite things to do was smash boxes, sweet potatoes, bags, and even an occasional pumpkin,” said Devney Bowen, RHZ head keeper. “He also loved to manipulate things, so we created enrichment to encourage those natural behaviors. One of his favorites was a PVC shaker filled with pellets or scent. Once he had the shaker he would move it with his horn to get the pellets to fall out or release the scent of the female rhinos. Uzazi was very intelligent. When working on hoof care he learned to lie on his side and present all four feet straight out for inspection and trimming. He also learned to open his mouth so we could look inside, and would hold this position for favorite treats.”

“Uzazi has been very gentle and loving,” said Vickie Musselman, RHZ register. “He always enjoyed lots of attention from keepers, staff and visitors, including being talked to, touched and brushed. He especially loved his baths, most days standing directly in front of the hose with his rear to you while you were cleaning, pretty much making you give him a light shower.”

“He was the sweetest, most gentle boy, always in good spirits, and never met a stranger,” said Laura Mason, RHZ hoofstock keeper. “When I decided I wanted to work with animals my goal was to work with rhinos, and Uzazi was the first rhino I fell in love with. His calm eyes and gentle demeanor meant everyone who met him instantly saw the depth of these incredible creatures. Uzazi also loved a party, and he would stroll out into his yard and check out each box before starting to eat his treats. Usually about halfway through he would realize he had barrels or boxes to smash and mosey over to do so. Though he never moved fast, he could often be seen strolling along the yard grazing or rubbing his horn on anything hard he could find. He will leave a big gap in all of our hearts and the barn will never be the same without our ‘old man’.”

“While I’ve worked in or around zoos for over 20 years, Uzazi was the first rhino I spent any time around,” said Ryan VanZant, RHZ executive director. “He certainly touched the heart and ignited passion for me and my family as I’m sure he did with all of those who met him. There is little doubt that his life led to many thousands of small actions all contributing toward saving his species all around the world.”

A flood warning has been issued for Ellsworth County until 12:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.

Additional rainfall amounts up to 1 inch are possible in the warned area.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Ellsworth, Kanopolis, Ellsworth Airport, Kanopolis Lake, and Kanopolis State Park.

Do not drive into flooded areas or go around barricades. Nearly two feet of water will carry most vehicles away. Turn around, don`t drown.

At 7:03 p.m. CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Brookville, or 11 miles southwest of Salina, moving northeast at 25 mph. 60 mph wind gusts and nickel size hail are expected.

Locations impacted include Salina, Assaria, Gypsum, Brookville, Smolan, New Cambria, Falun, Glendale, Bridgeport, Salina Airport, and Kipp.&nbsp; This includes the following highways: Interstate 135 between mile markers 77 and 95 and Interstate 70 between mile markers 236 and 266.

Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

Torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm, and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.

In 1953, an extremely dangerous severe thunderstorm tore through the Wichita metro area. Winds were measured at exactly 100 mph when the anemometer broke at the airport. The hail was "at least golf ball-sized". The severe thunderstorm caused around $9 million damage. In 1969, a short-lived but strong F3 tornado hit the south side of Salina. The tornado's track was only two miles long and around 50 yards wide. However, it hit the airport, severely damaged or destroyed 104 homes and seven businesses, and injured 60.&nbsp;&nbsp;

• Will routinely deliver education programs to a wide variety of audiences in different venues, both on-site and off-site.

• Responsible to uphold the mission and goals of RHZ in all educational programs.

• Trains and supervises Zoo Teens for education programming.

• Will network with other educators, locally and nationally, to continue to enhance and improve the quality of programming offered.

• Working with the General Curator, will comply with all Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) guidelines and safety recommendations in the use of education program animals.

• Will attend meetings and conferences pertinent to zoo education and wildlife/conservation education.

• Will work with other departments to organize special events held at the Zoo and/or Museum.

• Other duties of a similar nature as otherwise assigned.

Downs man faces multiple requested drug charges after Marion stop

After a near-monthlong spring training at Kansas Wesleyan University, the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps will premiere its 2022 MMX show Thursday.

The performance is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday in KWU's Graves Family Sports Complex.

Tickets are $10 apiece for the general public. KWU faculty, staff, students, and alumni can get in free with preregistration. KWU faculty, staff, students, and alumni need to call the music department at 785-833-4528 to preregister for the event and must bring their campus ID to the gate Thursday evening.

Crossmen, headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, competes as part of Drum Corps International. The corps has reached that organization’s finals 29 times in its 48-year history. 

The entire corps has been in residence on KWU’s campus since May 20.

The show will be livestreamed through the Crossmen’s <a href="https://www.facebook.com/CrossmenDBC">Facebook</a> and YouTube pages, as well.

Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps performance Thursday at KWU

A thief was seen driving off on the riding lawnmower he had just stolen from a west Salina home and ranch store early Saturday.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that surveillance video shows a man walk up to the rear loading dock at Atwoods Home and Ranch, 400 S. Broadway Boulevard, at 4:15 a.m. Saturday. The man began taking apart a wooden crate that contained an $1,800 Troy-Bilt riding lawnmower.

The man assembled the mower and put in it oil and gasoline that he had brought with him, Forrester said. He then rode away on the mower.

Broadway Boulevard, at 4:15 a.m. Saturday. The man began taking apart a wooden crate that contained an $1,800 Troy-Bilt riding lawnmower.The man assembled the mower and put in it oil and gasoline that he had brought with him, Forrester said. He then rode away on the mower.Forrester said the man was described as being white and wearing a black sleeveless shirt, a hat, and possibly glasses.

Police investigating weekend burglary at south Salina dealership

Saline County closed part of W. Hedberg Road today for drainage work.

W. Hedberg Road between S. Halstead Road and S. Burma Road was closed to through traffic Tuesday for the replacement of a cross-road drainage culvert.

Weather permitting, the roadway should be opened by the end of June 29.

Motorists are advised to allow a few extra minutes of travel time to reach their destinations. Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.

Let’s go to the Super Bowl – that is, the Super Bowl of disc golf.&nbsp;

It’s the Professional Disc Golf Association World Championships in Ogden, Utah. Many of the top competitors are using discs from a remarkable Kansas company.&nbsp;

Jeremy Rusco is the founder and CEO of Dynamic Discs, the business that provides the discs for many top competitors in the sport. Jeremy was a Great Bend native who came to Emporia State to play football, run track, and study business. Jeremy also discovered the sport of disc golf.&nbsp;

Disc golf is played just like traditional golf in that the goal is to get to the target in as few tries as possible, except the player is using a round plastic disc instead of a ball, and the target is a metal pan mounted on a post, with chains hanging down to break the disc’s momentum when it reaches the target.&nbsp;

Of course, the player doesn’t use a club, but throws the disc at the target like throwing a frisbee.&nbsp;

However, the player needs different discs just like a golfer needs different clubs. In other words, discs are designed differently for drives, putts, etc. A competitive disc golfer might have 15 or more discs with a bag to carry them.&nbsp;

Rusco discovered the sport as a student at Emporia State. He found it was a lot of fun and figured he could buy more discs and sell the extras to others. He bought discs, put on cool designs and dyed them, and sold them on eBay. As interest grew, he set up his own business. After asking his girlfriend (now wife) Wendy what to name the company, he settled on the name Dynamic Discs.&nbsp;

“I never expected it to be anything more than a college hobby, but after graduating in 2006, it was evident that there was something special about the disc golf community,” Rusco said.&nbsp;

He settled in Emporia and continued to grow the business of designing and selling the discs. The eBay store became a website and then a retail operation. Rusco worked continually to design new and improved products.&nbsp;

As interest in the discs grew, Rusco decided to produce Dynamic Discs apparel as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;He hand-pressed designs on shirts, hats, and towels.&nbsp;

Disc golf was growing into a significant sport. Rusco befriended a touring pro named Eric McCabe who agreed to wear DD apparel and become the first sponsored player for Dynamic Discs. In 2010, McCabe used Dynamic Discs equipment to win the World Championship and gained more visibility for the brand. Then the company started sponsoring tournaments.&nbsp;

Up until 2012, the company had been putting dye and custom stamps on other manufacturer’s discs, so the next step was to design a disc of its own. After discussions with several manufacturers, Rusco found a company in Sweden named Latitude 64.&nbsp;

“Our partnership with Latitude 64 that started in December of 2012 is nothing short of extraordinary,” Rusco said.&nbsp;

Together, Dynamic Discs and Latitude 64 created and produced four different designs for molded discs, named Trespass, Escape, Fugitive, and Judge. Those are the cornerstones of their disc line, which has grown to include some 30 discs.&nbsp;

As the company continued to grow, Dynamic Distribution was founded in 2013. Today it operates in a 20,000 square foot warehouse on the southwest side of Emporia.&nbsp;

“Our mission is to grow the sport we all love,” Rusco said. As the sport has grown, many communities have installed disc golf courses across the nation. That certainly includes Kansas, which has courses in&nbsp;rural&nbsp;and urban communities, literally from corner to corner in the state, and ranging from Hiawatha to Hugoton and Baxter Springs to St. Francis, population 1,329 people. Now, that’s&nbsp;rural.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN – A Kansas State University veterinarian is urging cattle producers to beef up their plans for managing heat stress in their herds, a challenge that costs the U.S. cattle industry up to $370 million in losses each year.&nbsp;

A.J. Tarpoff, a beef veterinarian with K-State Research and Extension, said cattle are resilient animals; they will often acclimate to hot temperatures.&nbsp;

But an accumulation of factors – including humidity, solar radiation, the color of their hide, diet and more – can drastically change a cow’s ability to withstand summer’s heat.&nbsp;

“It really is a multi-layer challenge,” Tarpoff said. “Each animal within a group or pen is not affected the same way. Animals with higher body condition scores, or with darker hides, or finisher steers and heifers that are getting ready to go to harvest are at higher-risk of heat stress.”&nbsp;

Tarpoff said heat stress decreases the reproductive efficiency and performance of cattle grazing on pasture. In confined facilities, heat stress often causes cattle to eat less, which also negatively affects their performance.&nbsp;

The human body cools itself on a hot day by sweating, called evaporative cooling. But Tarpoff notes that cattle sweat only 10 percent as much as humans, and panting is their primary way of dissipating heat.&nbsp;

“As temperatures rise and their heat load increases, they will start breathing faster,” he said. “They are dissipating heat through tiny droplets in the respiratory tract.”&nbsp;

Doing so, however, causes cows to eat less, setting them on a path to poor growth and future performance.&nbsp;

“This all has to do with heat load,” Tarpoff said. “The internal temperature of cattle will peak two hours after the hottest point of the day. So our strategy for keeping cows cool needs to be built around knowing that.”&nbsp;

Another factor is that cattle produce heat by digesting food, typically 4-6 hours after eating. “So if we feed animals within the wrong period of time, we can actually increase their heat load because the heat of digestion and the heat from the environment are building on top of each other,” Tarpoff said. “We want to keep that from happening.”&nbsp;

Tarpoff listed best management practices for helping to reduce heat stress in cows:

●Handling.&nbsp;Receive, ship or move cattle only during the coolest parts of the day, preferably before 10 a.m.&nbsp;

●Feeding.&nbsp;Modify feeding times. Feed 70 percent of the animals’ ration as late in the evening as possible, which puts the peak heat of digestion overnight when temperatures are likely cooler. Decrease feeding during the day.

●Managing heat.&nbsp;Split cattle between pens or reduce stocking density. Maximize airflow by removing obstructions around facilities, including weeds. “To put it into perspective, when the temperature goes from 70 degrees Fahrenheit to 90 degrees, a cattle will consume about double the amount of water,” Tarpoff said.&nbsp;

As a rule, he said cattle should consume “about five times the amount of water as the dry matter they are consuming.”&nbsp;

“Cool, clean and readily-available water is critical during heat stress events. We may have to increase the water tank capacity within a pen to meet these needs with portable water troughs. Producers need to be prepared for that.”&nbsp;

Tarpoff said he follows two sources for help in making a decision when to put a heat stress management plan into full effect.&nbsp;

The Kansas Mesonet, housed at Kansas State University, is a network of observation towers located across the state that updates climate information every hour.&nbsp;

“Right now, if we don’t have night-time cooling hours, the animal won’t be starting each day at thermo-neutral, so they’re more at risk on the second or third day,” Tarpoff said. “Temperature, humidity, solar radiation -- but most importantly right now wind speed -- all play a role in dissipating heat. Operations should start implementing strategies for controlling these stressors if they haven’t already.”&nbsp;

By PAT MELGARES K-State Research and Extension News Service MANHATTAN – A Kansas State University veterinarian is urging cattle producers to beef up their plans for managing heat stress in their herds, a challenge that costs the U.S. cattle industry up to $370 million in losses each year.&nbsp;A.J. Tarpoff, a beef veterinarian with K-State Research and Extension, said cattle are resilient animals; they will often acclimate to hot temperatures.&nbsp;But an accumulation of factors – including humidity, solar radiation, the color of their hide, diet and more – can drastically change a cow’s ability to withstand summer’s heat.&nbsp;“It really is a multi-layer challenge,” Tarpoff said. “Each animal within a group or pen is not affected the same way. Animals with higher body condition scores, or with darker hides, or finisher steers and heifers that are getting ready to go to harvest are at higher-risk of heat stress.”&nbsp;<div><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/IpUcl7vkRUE" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>Tarpoff said heat stress decreases the reproductive efficiency and performance of cattle grazing on pasture. In confined facilities, heat stress often causes cattle to eat less, which also negatively affects their performance.&nbsp;The human body cools itself on a hot day by sweating, called evaporative cooling. But Tarpoff notes that cattle sweat only 10 percent as much as humans, and panting is their primary way of dissipating heat.&nbsp;“As temperatures rise and their heat load increases, they will start breathing faster,” he said. “They are dissipating heat through tiny droplets in the respiratory tract.”&nbsp;Doing so, however, causes cows to eat less, setting them on a path to poor growth and future performance.&nbsp;“This all has to do with heat load,” Tarpoff said. “The internal temperature of cattle will peak two hours after the hottest point of the day. So our strategy for keeping cows cool needs to be built around knowing that.”&nbsp;Another factor is that cattle produce heat by digesting food, typically 4-6 hours after eating. “So if we feed animals within the wrong period of time, we can actually increase their heat load because the heat of digestion and the heat from the environment are building on top of each other,” Tarpoff said. “We want to keep that from happening.”&nbsp;Tarpoff listed best management practices for helping to reduce heat stress in cows: ●Handling.&nbsp;Receive, ship or move cattle only during the coolest parts of the day, preferably before 10 a.m.&nbsp;●Feeding.&nbsp;Modify feeding times. Feed 70 percent of the animals’ ration as late in the evening as possible, which puts the peak heat of digestion overnight when temperatures are likely cooler. Decrease feeding during the day.●Managing heat.&nbsp;Split cattle between pens or reduce stocking density. Maximize airflow by removing obstructions around facilities, including weeds. Monday’s harvest report is a tale of the widely-varying growing conditions across the state, from abandoned acres in drought-afflicted southwest Kansas to ample moisture and good yields in the southeast. Harvest is languishing in Meade County, where the quality of harvested wheat is good, but the bushels just aren’t there, according to Mike Schlochtermeier, general manager of Meade Coop Elevator &amp; Supply Co.

“In a word, slow,” Schlochtermeier said. “We started on June 9, when we took in our first load, and this is the slowest — volume-wise — I’ve ever seen it.”

Dryland wheat was too far gone by the time the area did catch some raindrops, but did help out irrigated wheat — a little — since it was further behind in development. He’s had several producers pull into a field, do a test cut to verify yields and then call the insurance adjuster because the field only pencils out to three or seven bushels an acre. Then the harvest crew pulls out and moves on, to try to find a field that will be worth cutting.&nbsp;

Schlochtermeier’s fears going into harvest were shriveled kernels and low test weights, but the quality is a bright spot. Between all of the Meade Coop locations, test weight is averaging just under 62 pounds per bushel, moisture at 9 to 10 percent and protein at 12 to 12.5 percent. For fields that are being harvested, many producers are making 10 to 20 bushels per acre with top yields coming in the 40 bushel-per-acre range.&nbsp;

Schlochtermeier expects most area growers to finish up by the weekend.&nbsp;

“By then, they’ll have cut what they are going to cut,” he said.&nbsp;In central Kansas, yields are coming in a little better, ranging from 25 to 55 bushels per acre.

Derek Sawyer, who farms in McPherson County, reported yields in the mid 50s and test weights of 60 pounds and above. Since he has only delivered four loads to the elevator, he didn’t have proteins to report; however, he has also harvested the Agripro variety SY Monument and delivered that to Grain Craft, as it is on the Preferred Variety List.

Tony Andrews from Lyons in Rice County reported test weights of 60 pounds per bushel and above. He expects his farm to average 25 to 30 bushels per acre. Andrews said the rains didn’t come into the area until too late. At that point, it just kept them out of the fields. They expect harvest to wrap up for their operation on Wednesday. Andrews farms with his in-laws, and they hired a custom harvester crew from Nebraska, who is looking for another job starting on Thursday. With lower yields across the region and increased price of fuel, many custom harvest crews have been on the lookout for acres to cut.

Brian Sieker from Chase in Rice County reported test weights ranging from 59 to 64 pounds per bushel. He reports that the AgriPro variety Bob Dole held on pretty well in his sandy soil. Since Sieker has an after-market parts sales business, he tests out products before he sells them. To help his customers make good choices on things they might use or need based on their unique situation, he is trying out a feature for grain headers to help harvest short wheat.

Soft red winter (SRW) wheat harvest is just getting started in Crawford County with combines starting to roll in the middle of last week. It’s too early to report many yields and quality thus far is a bit hit-and-miss, according to Brice Elnicki, general manager/CEO of Producers Coop Association in Girard.&nbsp; The growing season in this far southeastern part of the state differs greatly from wheat production further west. Here, the area typically receives adequate moisture over the winter and doesn’t have winterkill issues. Generally, the local SRW wheat crop receives adequate rainfall — which is why producers plant soft wheat varieties with disease tolerance packages, rather than the drought-tolerant hard wheat varieties planted further west. Elnicki explained producers want a dry end of May and start of June to head off quality concerns like sprouting. Good yields come in at 80 bushels per acre, 100-bushel wheat is very good and 110 to 120 bushels per acre is “damn good.” Harvested SRW wheat will be marketed to domestic flour mills in the Kansas City area.&nbsp;&nbsp; This year’s growing season was good, but a little wetter than producers would prefer. The weather dried out in the last two to three weeks, which removed pre-harvest quality concerns. Early yields are coming in between 80 to 100 bushels an acre, not a chart-topper, but good results. Average test weight is 60.8 pounds per bushel and moisture is 12.3 percent.&nbsp; While the majority of wheat growers in the area did spray fungicide, the ones that did not are seeing low incidence of vomitoxin, with less than 15 percent of fields affected, Elnicki reported. Nearly all of the SRW wheat acres in the area will be double-cropped to soybeans, but Elnicki said area producers are waiting for rain later on this week before they get started.
