Rolling Hills Zoo closing early Friday due to heat

The Salina USD 305 Board of Education and NEA-Salina reached an agreement in their contract negotiations for the 2022-2023 school year.&nbsp; 

Contract changes for next year include: ●Salary Schedule Changes: $700 increase to the base salary, plus step and movement

●Increase in the liquidated damages amount assessed to those who resign between June 1 – June 30

●The addition of coaching positions for ESports and Unified Bowling to the Supplemental Salary Schedule

●Modifications to leave rules on days involving mandatory attendance

●Increased special salary provision for School Psychologists

●Modifications to the procedure for employee-requested internal transfers

●Changes to attendance requirements for work days

●Amendments to school safety provision

In efforts to assist in clean-up after the severe weather last night, the Dickinson County Transfer Station will allow residents of Dickinson County to dispose of tree limbs free of charge through July 2. Limbs will be accepted from 9 a.m.-4:45 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-12:45 p.m. on Saturday.

Disposal fees for tree limbs will become effective again on July 5. Currently, the fee is rated at $10 per load of limbs.

Please note that treated wood (e.g. plywood, particle board, 2x4’s) will not be accepted into our limb pile and will have to be disposed of as regular household waste. All treated wood must be cut into segments SHORTER than 6’ in length.

Household waste is accepted Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. There is a $10.00 fee for household waste loads weighing less than 400 lbs.

Any load weighing over 400 lbs. will be rated at $50.00/ton.

As a reminder, residents may dispose of household hazardous waste (e.g. paint, lithium batteries, pesticides, household cleaners), metal and e-waste free of charge year-round. We ask that these items be separated PRIOR to your arrival at the Transfer Station. Additionally, please have lumber detached from any metal you are disposing of.

Dickinson County: Free tree limb disposal for residents

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) requests comments on the draft Kansas Rail Plan. This document provides an overview of freight rail networks in Kansas, commodity flows, economic data and, additionally, information about passenger rail service in the state.

Rail plan updates are required every five years. Federal guidelines require a public comment period of 30 days, which concludes on July 22. Scattered showers, storms bring heavy rain this morning

Scattered showers moved through Kansas on Tuesday night, pushing pause on the Kansas wheat harvest. Severe weather hit the eastern two-thirds of the state with gusty winds and a small, confirmed tornado in Ellsworth. Further west, rain totals didn’t amount to much, but the lower temperatures, high humidity and overcast conditions meant harvest was still under rain delay for many producers on Wednesday.

Ahead of the rain on Tuesday, Kansas Wheat staff stopped by the harvest field in Hamilton County. Jason Ochs, who farms near Syracuse, was cutting a field of hard white wheat that was coming in dry at nine percent moisture with a good test weight of 61.5 pounds per bushel.

Area yields are being reported at nine to 25 bushels per acre, but anything over 20 bushels per acre would be a stretch for this part of Kansas due to the extreme drought throughout the growing season.

On the county line between Stafford and Reno counties, farmer Randy Fritzemeier was about halfway through wheat harvest before a quarter inch of rain shut down cutting on Tuesday night.

Yields are disappointing in the low 30s bushels per acre, but the wheat is some of the best quality he has cut with test weights at 61 to 64 pounds per bushel. Despite lower-than-average yields, Fritzemeier was surprised at how well the crop turned out. He had to replant fields due to significant rainfall during planting, but then the weather turned so dry that the windstorm on December 15 filled the house with dirt. This spring brought around 1.5 inches of rain during heading and another 4.5 inches while kernels were filling, helping finish off the crop.

had planned for a custom-cutting crew to help him finish off the wheat harvest, but with delays from the crew, Fritzemeier said he’ll keep cutting until they arrive.

Farmers expect to climb back into the combine cab as soon as field conditions allow, likely following triple-digit temperatures on Thursday and Friday.&nbsp;

Severe weather hit the eastern two-thirds of the state with gusty winds and a small, confirmed tornado in Ellsworth. Further west, rain totals didn’t amount to much, but the lower temperatures, high humidity and overcast conditions meant harvest was still under rain delay for many producers on Wednesday. Ahead of the rain on Tuesday, Kansas Wheat staff stopped by the harvest field in Hamilton County. Jason Ochs, who farms near Syracuse, was cutting a field of hard white wheat that was coming in dry at nine percent moisture with a good test weight of 61.5 pounds per bushel. Area yields are being reported at nine to 25 bushels per acre, but anything over 20 bushels per acre would be a stretch for this part of Kansas due to the extreme drought throughout the growing season. On the county line between Stafford and Reno counties, farmer Randy Fritzemeier was about halfway through wheat harvest before a quarter inch of rain shut down cutting on Tuesday night. Yields are disappointing in the low 30s bushels per acre, but the wheat is some of the best quality he has cut with test weights at 61 to 64 pounds per bushel. Despite lower-than-average yields, Fritzemeier was surprised at how well the crop turned out. He had to replant fields due to significant rainfall during planting, but then the weather turned so dry that the windstorm on December 15 filled the house with dirt. This spring brought around 1.5 inches of rain during heading and another 4.5 inches while kernels were filling, helping finish off the crop. had planned for a custom-cutting crew to help him finish off the wheat harvest, but with delays from the crew, Fritzemeier said he’ll keep cutting until they arrive. The American College of Cardiology (ACC) has recognized Salina Regional Health Center for its demonstrated expertise and commitment in treating patients with heart failure. 

The Heart Failure Accreditation earned this month was based on a rigorous onsite review of the staff’s ability to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients with heart failure through pre-hospital care, early stabilization, acute care, transitional care, clinical quality measures and more.

Heart failure is a chronic and progressive condition where the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs for blood and oxygen. Hospitals that employ an evidence-based, protocol-driven and systematic approach to managing heart failure have been able to reduce time to treatment and are able to identify and predict high-risk patients while also reducing length-of-stay and hospital readmissions.

“Salina Regional Health Center has demonstrated its commitment to providing north central Kansas with excellent heart care,” said Deepak L. Bhatt, MD, MPH, FACC, chair of the ACC Accreditation Management Board. “ACC Accreditation Services is proud to award Salina Regional Health Center with Heart Failure Accreditation.”

“This new accreditation for heart failure, in addition to our accreditation as a Chest Pain Center with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention from the ACC, is a great example of our collaborative efforts to provide the highest quality of cardiac care for patients in our region,” said Joel Phelps, President/CEO at Salina Regional Health Center. “These efforts by our staff for enhancing our levels of care make a difference in the region. Hospitals receiving Heart Failure Accreditation from the ACC must take part in a multi-faceted clinical process that involves: completing a gap analysis; examining variances of care, developing an action plan; a rigorous onsite review; and monitoring for sustained success. Improved methods and strategies of caring for patients include streamlining processes, implementing guidelines and standards, and adopting best practices in the precise care of heart failure patients. Facilities that achieve accreditation meet or exceed an array of stringent criteria and have organized a team of doctors, nurses, clinicians and other administrative staff that earnestly support the efforts leading to better patient education, improved patient outcomes, and more effective and efficient disease control.

S. Kipp Road between Lapsley Road and E. Hedberg Road will be closed indefinitely to through traffic beginning Wednesday to permit the Saline County Road and Bridge Department Engineering staff the opportunity to perform an assessment of a cross-road drainage structure.

Motorists are advised to allow a few extra minutes of travel time to reach their destinations. Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.

Tuesday rainfall: From trace to nearly 2 inches

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department announced early Wednesday afternoon that it was closing part of Hobbs Creek Road in the southern part of the county for drainage work.

Hobbs Creek Road between S. Gypsum Valley Road and S. Kipp Road was being closed to traffic beginning today for the replacement of a drainage structure. Weather permitting the roadway should be opened by Friday.

Local drivers are asked to find alternate routes around the work area. Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies, the county noted in a news release.

Police are looking for information concerning a Chevrolet Express van they believe is connected to the disappearance of a Salina man.

On Saturday, the Salina Police Department announced that it was investigating the disappearance of Nathan Philip Thompson, 44, of Salina, who hadn't been seen in approximately a week. Police noted that Thompson was being considered a missing endangered person.

He is described as being 6'2" tall, weighing 184, and having brown hair and hazel eyes.

This morning, the department issued the following.

The Salina Police Department through the course of the investigation, developed information that the below Chevrolet Express van was possibly used to facilitate the disappearance of Nathan Thompson. The Salina Police Department has the van in its possession. We are asking the public for any information they can provide with regards to the van since June 9th, 2022, especially any sightings in rural areas.

Anyone that has seen the van and/or its driver should contact the Salina Police Department, Crime Stoppers or the tip line below.

Police seek tips about van believed to be connected to missing Salina man

A series of storms rolled through the area late Tuesday afternoon into evening, bringing with them heavy rains, flooding, gusty winds, power outages, and even a funnel cloud.

Torrential downpours dumped inches of rain in some locations of Ellsworth County, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a flood warning for the county through early this morning. KINA AM weather analyst Randy Picking reported that two to three inches of rain fell in parts of the county.

As if that wasn't enough, the weather service also issued a brief tornado warning for Ellsworth County after storm spotters reported a funnel cloud southwest of Ellsworth.

As the storms moved into Saline County, penny to quarter-sized hail was reported. As of 7 a.m. Wednesday, 0.95 of an inch of rain was reported at the Salina Regional Airport, while in southeast Salina, near the Eagle Radio studios 1.80 inches of rain was reported.

Wind gusts at the Salina Regional Airport reached 47 miles per hour during the height of the storms. Wind gusts appeared to strengthen as the storms rolled across the city, knocking down tree limbs and ripping off shingles. Picking said winds of at least 60 miles per hour that were reported a mile southeast of Bennington took down a large 45-foot-tall tree. Additionally, winds intensified in northeast Saline County to 60-70 mph and damaged trees and knocked out power as the storms moved into Dickinson County, Picking noted.

The storms knocked out power to nearly 7,000 customers from Salina to Junction City, Picking said. The Evergy outage map indicated that 6,200 customers were without power, while the DS&amp;O Electric Cooperative map indicated 660 customers without power. As of 10:57 a.m. Wednesday, power had been restored to nearly all Evergy customers and power had been restored to all DS&amp;O customers, according to information on the outage maps.

We get a break from near-triple-digit heat on Wednesday

Every year around this time, the world around me has the potential to quickly turn into a continuous swirl that would be perfect for a TV series.&nbsp; &nbsp; In cinematic effect, I imagine my story would begin with a black and white tight shot of my eyes opening wide from slumber and darting back and forth in a semi-confused state. &nbsp; The background music at the start of my episode would consist of an odd pattern of guitar plinks and orchestral bursts, and over this hair-raising musical selection would include a Rod Serling-like narration: &nbsp; “You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension. A dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You’re moving into a land of both shadow and substance. Of things and ideas. You’ve just crossed over into … the ‘Harvest Zone.’” &nbsp; Harvest crews are making their way through wheat fields in my part of the world right now. As a farming family, this begins the busy season of not only harvesting wheat from the fields while racing the summer storms, but also finishing up the planting of our fall crops, and beginning the long, hot summer days of irrigation. Sprinkle in a variety of summer activities for our kids like Vacation Bible School, baseball games and swim lessons, and you have a swirling vortex of days that leave people like me asking at times, “What day is it?”&nbsp; &nbsp; It’s during this time of the year I have to intentionally look at my calendar every morning to identify which kid has a baseball game that evening, if I have a scheduled Zoom call at some point during the day, or if my newspaper column is due. In reality, I also have to look at my calendar to know what the actual&nbsp;day is. &nbsp; It’s during this part of the year where I intentionally set two alerts on all of my calendar entries. One alert is set for “1 day before” and the second for “1 hour before” to help remind me of daily events.&nbsp; &nbsp; And it’s during this part of the year while conducting my daily morning calendar review, I will also routinely set alarms on my phone to go off approximately 30-minutes prior to any calendar entries that demand me to be at a certain place at a certain time.&nbsp; &nbsp; While it seems excessive, all of this helps me to avoid wandering through a timeless dimension exacerbated by the hustle of wheat harvest and other continuously flowing summer farm and family tasks and appointments that can easily blend into one big summer blur if not contained. &nbsp; To know what day&nbsp;it is and to be aware of what time&nbsp;it is helps me stay as grounded and focused as possible. These are the steps I take to keep moving forward and not overlook important tasks needing my attention.&nbsp; &nbsp; Whether it’s getting my kids to their games on time, delivering seed to a field at the right time, or consistently delivering our harvest crew their meals twice daily at mealtime, it’s just one of the ways I try to maintain awareness of real time&nbsp;while living in the “Harvest Zone.”
