KDOT: Contests aim to Put the Brakes on Fatalities

A Salina teen was transported to Salina Regional Health Center after a two-vehicle wreck Saturday evening in the western part of the city.

A 16-year-old boy in a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado was stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of W. Republic Avenue and Cherokee Drive when he pulled out and struck a 2000 Toyota Camry that was already in the intersection, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The Camry was driven by Mikal Terrell, 29, of Salina.

The wreck occurred just after 6 p.m. Saturday.

The boy complained of pelvic and leg pain and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, Forrester said.

The Silverado sustained front-end damage. The Camry sustained passenger-side damage and had to be towed from the scene, Forrester said.

The teen was cited for violation of restrictions and inattentive driving and Terrell was cited for no proof of insurance and driving on a suspended license, Forrester said.

1 driver injured, both cited in west Salina wreck Saturday evening

Local man arrested after incident at east Salina Kwik Shop

A Crimestoppers tip led police to a Salina man with multiple active warrants Friday evening.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of N. Seventh Street at approximately 7:25 p.m. Friday. A Crimestoppers tip had reported that Corry Barnes, 20, of Salina, who was on the Saline County Most Wanted List, was there and loading items into a vehicle.

When officers arrived in the area, they observed a white and green Buick Century known to belong to Barnes' girlfriend pull into Rod's No. 2, 1339 N. Ninth Street, and observed Barnes inside the vehicle, Forrester said. An officer initiated a traffic stop and Barnes ran from the car, leading police on a foot chase for several blocks, Forrester said.

Barnes was apprehended in the 1200 block of N. 10th Street.

Barnes was arrested on the following active warrants, Forrester said.

●Flee and elude, Saline County District Court

●Failure to appear, Salina Municipal Court

●Failure to appear, Dickinson County District Court

Additionally, Barnes was arrested on a requested charge of felony interference with a law enforcement officer, Forrester said.

ABILENE - Employees of Memorial Health System (MHS) in Abilene wore blue jeans at work for another Jeans Day fundraiser on Fridays throughout the month of August. 

Employees make a donation, of at least $5, and are allowed to wear blue jeans at work. For August, a total donation of $1,155 was presented to Tori Murphy, organizer of Derrik’s Ride. To date, this is the largest donation made for Jeans Day by the employees of MHS. 

Derrik’s Ride is an event to help in the fight against childhood cancer, which features a poker run, bike show, dinner, auction, live band, and more. This year’s event, to be held in Old Abilene Town, is Sept. 17. For more information, search “Derrik’s Ride” on Facebook or call 785-280-3178.

DAVIESS COUNTY, Mo.—A Salina teen was injured in an accident just after 11a.m. Monday in Daviess County, Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2002 Nissan Frontier driven by Lori J. Mobley, 59, Salina, was southbound on Interstate 35 three miles south of Cameron.

The pickup traveled off the east side of the road into the median and the driver overcorrected and returned to the road. The pickup then slid off the east side of the road, struck an embankment and rolled.

Daviess County EMS transported a 14-year-old Salina boy to Cameron Regional Medical Center. The driver was not injured. Both were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

The MSHP released no additional information.

MCPHERSON –&nbsp;McPherson College is reimagining its campus for the future, funded in part by a successful $55 million capital campaign that will supercharge the largest-ever investment in new buildings in its 135-year history.

McPherson College recently released renderings of the three new building projects that will be the centerpiece of this historic campus update: Campus Commons, the Boiler House, and the Holman Center for Athletics. All of these projects have one thing in common: they are built around how students learn and live in the 21st&nbsp;century, giving them the resources and support to do their best work.

Alumni and visitors attending McPherson College’s Homecoming celebration on Oct. 15 will be able to see designs of the new buildings and the progress made toward their completion as part of a walking tour. This will provide the opportunity to envision these projects in their campus setting.

In addition to the new structures, nearly half of the $55 million in new funding will directly support educational initiatives on campus, such as student scholarships, Health Science, Automotive Restoration, and other academic programs and growth areas.

“This is a truly momentous announcement for McPherson College, and nobody deserves it more than our hardworking students, faculty, and staff,” said McPherson College President Michael Schneider. “We are changing the face of our campus in a way that puts the needs of our students first and prepares them for the future, thanks to the tremendous support we have received from across the country.”

The 55,000 square foot Campus Commons will serve as the beating heart of student life on campus, providing a state-of-the-art event venue, service hub, and place to grab a bite—while passing through a three-story atrium with classic cars on display, celebrating McPherson’s one-of-a-kind Automotive Restoration degree program.

$20 million in funding will go to The Commons, a true signature facility that will accommodate McPherson College’s growth and provide a new “front door” to the campus, with a prairie-inspired design that provides a welcome to the city of McPherson.

The building will contain the new campus dining facility, a coffee shop, a student store, flexible coworking and collaboration space, as well as several administrative offices, the new Dalke Center housing Career Services, and a Welcome Center for new students. It is a bold move away from the current student union and toward a center that makes sense for the way students live and study on a 21st-century campus.

The Boiler House is truly the college hangout for the next generation: an indoor-outdoor space with flex seating, yard games, fire-pits, and a large outdoor screen and stage area—the perfect place to socialize and collaborate with classmates. It is an imaginative reuse of McPherson’s existing utility building to create an entirely new campus gathering point. 

In addition, the Holman Center for Athletics—an expansion of the existing sports facility—will give McPherson’s teams a modernized venue as they compete in a fast-changing dynamic for college athletics.

Beck Design, an architectural firm specializing in higher education and cultural institutions, led the design for McPherson’s new buildings. The firm, which has offices in New York, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa, operates with a mission of creating spaces that enhance the quality of life of those who work, live, and study in them—which the new buildings exemplify.

“It is an honor to play a part in re-imagining the campus of McPherson College, a true gem in this region,” said Paula Beck, principal of Beck Design. “The Campus Commons and Boiler House in particular truly emphasize our firm’s ethos of collaboration driving innovative experiences for students.”

McPherson College is not just building new cutting-edge additions to its campus; it is helping its students enjoy it with significantly less debt. In conjunction with the campus additions, McPherson College is also announcing a significant contribution of $3 million toward its pioneering Student Debt Project, which provides matching funds for students who hold jobs while attending school—helping keep costs manageable at a time of rising costs for essential items such as food and transportation. 

As a result of the Student Debt Project, McPherson College has one of the lowest average student debt at graduation rates among four-year colleges and universities in Kansas, giving students the ability to hit the ground running and take more of the earnings from their first post-college jobs home with them.

“The Student Debt Project has made it possible for me to receive a top-quality college education with the personal touch McPherson provides and graduate with an extremely manageable amount of debt,” said Lola Hipp, a graphic design student at McPherson College. “I have family members who have struggled with college debt, and McPherson has made it possible for me to pursue my education in an affordable way.”

Nearly 40% of all McPherson students were engaged in the Student Debt Project during the last school year, with participants in the program achieving a higher-than-average 3.3 GPA. Nearly 60% percent of participants had less than $2,000 in debt by the end of the last semester—with half of those students already becoming debt free. And 93% of students who participate in the Student Debt Project have remained in school.

“I am very proud that the most forward-thinking college town is in the middle of the country,” said McPherson Mayor Tom Brown. “I have a feeling this is not the last time McPherson College will be making news. Great things are ahead for our college and our city.”&nbsp;

The transformative investment in the future of McPherson College was catalyzed by a $25 million donation in May from philanthropists Melanie and Richard Lundquist, which marked the Lundquists’ first significant donation outside of their California home. Their gift has helped attract other donors.

“When I first learned about McPherson College through my interest in classic cars, I was immediately inspired by the sincerity and work ethic of the students and the way they were empowered by the culture on campus,” said Richard Lundquist. “It felt right to make this special place our first significant philanthropic investment outside our home state and shine more light on the magic happening on the Plains.” 

Lundquist recently joined McPherson College’s Board of Trustees.

McPherson College offers more than 30 undergraduate degree programs to its more than 800 students, representing 33 states and seven countries. Its nationally renowned Automotive Restoration Technology degree program has earned the support of car collectors, including icon Jay Leno, and its students plan to compete at one of the automotive world’s signature events, the Concours d’Elegance at Pebble Beach, Calif., next year.

Equipment use, records destruction among Saline Co. agenda items

Two pillars of Saline County made a special announcement Saturday at Kansas Wesleyan’s football opener, as JRI Hospitality and KWU revealed a 10-year naming rights agreement for the stadium inside Graves Family Sports Complex.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The facility will now bear the name JRI Stadium at Graves Family Sports Complex. &nbsp;&nbsp;

“Dr. Matt Thompson and his team embody the spirit of our organization when it comes to community,”&nbsp;said Jason Ingermanson, founder and CEO of JRI Hospitality. “Salina is our home, and we do everything in our ability to find ways to give back and say thank you. The Graves Family Sports Complex, which opened in 2015, bears the name of the family of one of KWU’s most famous families. The Graves family legacy at KWU begins with the university’s first graduate in 1887 and includes former Kansas governor the Honorable Bill Graves ’76. The facility houses not only the newly christened stadium, but also Gene Bissell Field, the Dale and Marceline Olson Track, the Dr. David and Susan Laha Practice Field, the Nex-Tech Press Box and the Dale and Susanne Bradley Tennis Courts. The facility has hosted numerous notable events since its inception, from concerts to KWU’s 2020 graduation and multiple NAIA football playoff games. &nbsp;

 </figure>KWUTwo pillars of Saline County made a special announcement Saturday at Kansas Wesleyan’s football opener, as JRI Hospitality and KWU revealed a 10-year naming rights agreement for the stadium inside Graves Family Sports Complex.&nbsp;&nbsp;The facility will now bear the name JRI Stadium at Graves Family Sports Complex. &nbsp;&nbsp;“Dr. Matt Thompson and his team embody the spirit of our organization when it comes to community,”&nbsp;said Jason Ingermanson, founder and CEO of JRI Hospitality. “Salina is our home, and we do everything in our ability to find ways to give back and say thank you. KWU, JRI Hospitality announce 10-year stadium naming rights deal

MANHATTAN – No one, young or old, likes to have “the conversation.”&nbsp;

But Erin Yelland, the interim director of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hhs.k-state.edu/aging/about/outreach/" target="_blank">Center on Aging</a>&nbsp;at Kansas State University, says it’s critical that families talk openly about end-of-life decisions.&nbsp;

“It’s difficult,” Yelland said. “Research shows that end-of-life conversations are fairly rare within families. Often, families are left to assume what a person might have wanted, and during a time of grief, those can be especially challenging decisions.”

An advance health care directive is a legal document that tells a doctor the patient’s wishes for health care in the case the patient is unable to voice their opinions. Yelland notes that approximately 3 in 4 American adults don’t have advance health care directives in place.&nbsp;

“As a cognitively healthy adult, you have the right to be informed of your medical care and decide your treatment,” Yelland said. “But what happens when you are unable to voice your own decisions… if you’re temporarily or permanently incapacitated?”&nbsp;

“That’s where advance health care planning comes in: It allows you to voice your wishes in your future health care needs in the event that you are unable to do so.”&nbsp;

Kansas law allows residents to fill out a simple form that records a name, address and phone number in order to establish a durable power of attorney – or someone who can make health care decisions on your behalf. Kansans must sign the form and have at least one witness to their signature. The form does not need to be notarized.&nbsp;

The form is available online from the K-State Research and Extension bookstore in the publication,&nbsp;<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/MF3280.pdf" target="_blank">Advance Health Care Planning in Kansas</a>; or through&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/about/statewide-locations.html" target="_blank">local extension offices in Kansas.</a>&nbsp;

Once the form is completed, Yelland suggests making several copies and keeping them in accessible places, as well as copies for the person named as durable power of attorney, a physician, local hospital, family and friends, and “basically anyone who you would think might show up to the hospital if something were to happen to you,” Yelland said.&nbsp;

The forms are recommended for anyone over age 18 in Kansas. “Advance health care planning can start when you’re 18 years old,” Yelland said. “Accidents, tragedies, life events can happen at any point.”&nbsp;

Once the form is complete, Yelland said it’s still important to communicate your wishes to anyone who might have a say in your health care.&nbsp;

“You also need to talk to your health care agent, or the person you’ll appoint in your durable power of attorney to speak for you in the event that something would happen,” she said. “This person needs to be aware of what your wishes are. And perhaps their wishes may not be what your wishes are. But you need to be sure that person will be willing to support you on your behalf and do what you would like.”&nbsp;

Forms should be reviewed and amended – if necessary – every year. If moving to another state (or routinely spend a significant amount of time outside of Kansas), you’ll likely have to fill out a form that is approved by that state.&nbsp;

NWS: Warm, dry in daytime, but cooler overnight

The just-released NAEP report indicates that the U.S. response to the pandemic resulted in the performance of 9-year olds’ math abilities dropping to levels of two decades ago. 

The decline in reading was the worst in three decades. It affected the poorer-performing students worse, where “students in the bottom 10th percentile dropped by 12 points in math, four times the decrease of students in the 90th percentile.” 

These National Assessment of Educational Progress tests have been tracking student achievement in grades 4, 8, and 12 since 1970. Academic areas evaluated include mathematics, reading, writing, U.S. history, geography and other areas.

This rapid and severe decline in student performance and knowledge during the two and a half years of pandemic schooling in America, much of it conducted online, will not be reflected in students’ grades. Grade inflation was already institutionalized across most states by policies that drove grade point averages (GPAs) up while scores on another common assessment, the ACT, continued to fall. The pandemic dramatically accelerated this grade inflation while ACT scores, and now the NAEP, show that learning has dramatically fallen. —Thus, higher grades for much less learned.

At the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, I described a set of measures that could be used to quantify this upcoming loss in learning. Medical doctors rate the damage of a particular disease by calculating the years of potential life lost (YPLL); therefore a disease that kills children is far more harmful to the population than a disease that kills the elderly. “Years of Potential Intellectual Life Lost” would use the same metrics to evaluate the slowdown in learning caused by a pandemic. My prediction in&nbsp;University World News&nbsp;was that academic progress would be slowed by several years due to the lost learning time and inferiority of online learning. —And that the lost learning would impact the K–16 education pipeline since students would carry this shortfall in learning up the grade levels for many years.

The NAEP and ACT reports indicate this substantial pause in learning was correct for the American educational system. However, a different cultural response in East Asia appears to have avoided most if not all of the education loss of a pandemic slowdown.

The initial infections in mainland China, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Singapore and Vietnam were met with a relatively short shutdown where most of the population stayed-in-place.&nbsp; By universal use of facial masking—a very common practice in Asia every winter for decades—as well as modern green-yellow-red cell phone contact detection, their pandemic was dramatically reduced or eliminated. Most new cases were imports. As a result, students returned to school with universal masking, regular fever monitoring and a wide array of distancing and antiseptic practices. And they continued school into the summer break—teachers and students made up for the pause in learning by extending school for two months. The result was that students did not lose their normal progress in reading, writing and math skills.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; 

The major cultural difference is their value for education which extended beyond surviving this pandemic. Not only is the school year longer in Asia, the school day is usually longer. On average, Asian parents value education more highly and many push their student(s) to also take extra tutoring after school or on the weekend. Simply, “an A-minus is an Asian F”; such students stay up studying late into the night to make sure the next grade is an “A.”

Our U.S. schools have received extra money for summer classes in order to recover “lost learning.” But the scale of our summer programs is nowhere near that of Asian countries where all teachers and students continued on. For the most part, they put school before vacation. For many of our K–16 students—as indicated by the NAEP and ACT data—school was a vacation.

Each of the East Asian countries administers standardized high school leaving exams that measure learning by subjects for ranking students to enter universities. This is a parallel to the ACT and will likely show that there was little to no decline in learning in East Asia.

Currently, a growing number of states are now considering reducing K–12 school from five to four days of attendance each week for various reasons. The next time I am in Asia, I am going to be asked why we are reducing our school days. There is absolutely no way that they will understand.&nbsp; &nbsp;
