McPherson police warn of scam claiming to include Farmer's State Bank

Police are looking for the driver of a blue vehicle involved in a hit-and-run collision late Wednesday afternoon in central Salina.

At approximately 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, a white GMC van that was legally parked 500 block of S. Eighth Street was struck, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

A witness saw an older blue station wagon-type vehicle leaving the scene. The collision left a blue streak along the driver's side, Forrester said.

The Stiefel Theatre Mike Finnigan School of Music wants to spread the joy of music to every willing learner in central Kansas. 

"Mike Finnigan was a great friend to the Stiefel. His musical collaborators are legendary: Jimi Hendrix, Bonnie Raitt, Crosby Stills &amp; Nash, Ringo Star and so many more. When he passed away his family chose to support music and the Stiefel in Mike’s name. This school is his legacy," the Stiefel Theatre noted in a news release. 

Music lessons are taught in a group format by local music teachers and leaders. Students range from age eight to adult. Classes last 50 minutes and are held at the Stiefel Theatre. During Sickle Cell Awareness Month in September, the American Red Cross emphasizes the importance of a diverse blood supply to help meet the needs of those with sickle cell disease – the most common inherited blood disorder in the U.S.

Sickle cell disease impacts more than 100,000 people across the country, most of whom are of African descent.&nbsp;Regular blood transfusions are critical to managing extreme pain and life-threatening complications faced by many. Unfortunately, they may develop an immune response against blood from donors that is not closely matched to their own. However, because most individuals who are Black have unique structures on their red blood cells that are not often found in other donor populations,&nbsp;1 in 3 African American blood donors is a match for people with sickle cell disease.

Life-threatening complications&nbsp;

To help ensure patients have the blood products they need, the American Red Cross is working with partners in the Black community to grow the number of blood donors who are Black through the sickle cell initiative, which launched in 2021.&nbsp;In the first year of the initiative, the number of first-time African American blood donors who gave with the Red Cross increased by 60%.&nbsp;In September and October, the Red Cross launches Joined by Blood, a fall component of the initiative where the Red Cross is teaming up with community organizations, like the National Pan-Hellenic Council and others, to host blood drives and inspire donors who are Black to give blood to support patients with sickle cell disease. SALINE COUNTY—A Salina man was injured in an accident just before 12:30p.m. Wednesday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway&nbsp; Patrol reported a 2005 Toyota Camry driven by Francisco M. Perez, 20, Salina, was eastbound on Kansas 140 four miles southwest of Bavaria.

The driver lost control of his vehicle. It started skidding, traveled off the south side of the highway, struck a culvert, vaulted onto the Union Pacific railroad tracks and came to rest.

Salina man hospitalized after car vaults onto railroad tracks

The Salina Symphony will embark this fall on a season of New Beginnings under the baton of newly appointed Music Director Yaniv Segal.

The season opens with a 4 p.m. performance on Oct. 2 in the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

The concert will feature Beethoven’s monumental Fifth Symphony, one of the most recognizable works of all time. Dynamic violinist and Kansas City native Maria Ioudenitch will dazzle audiences with her performance of Sibelius’ epic violin concerto. Patrick Harlin’s majestic new work, inspired by Earthrise – the iconic photograph taken from Apollo 8 – will open this can’t miss program.

Segal was named music director in May after an extensive search. He is the third music director in Salina Symphony’s 67-year history. Segal has achieved critical success since childhood for his work as a conductor, composer, actor and violinist. A rising star who is “redefining classical music” (Esquire Magazine), he is conductor laureate and artistic advisor of the Chelsea Symphony, a former assistant conductor of both the Naples Philharmonic and Detroit Symphony Orchestra and has assisted at the New York Philharmonic. With performances described as “enthusiastic, lively and incisive” (Giornale di Sicilia) and “illuminating” (New York Times), Segal has collaborated with artists ranging from Itzhak Perlman and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg to the Beach Boys and Chris Botti. He has appeared with many orchestras worldwide including the Minnesota Orchestra, Kansai Philharmonic, Sinfonietta Cracovia and Beethoven Academy Orchestra.

An American with a Russian heart, violinist Maria Ioudenitch completed her bachelor’s degree at the Curtis Institute of Music and her master’s degree at the New England Conservatory. She is currently finishing her studies at NEC with Miriam Fried as an artist diploma candidate.

Over the past year, Ioudenitch has received first prizes in the Ysaye International Music Competition, the Tibor Varga International Violin Competition and the Joachim International Competition as well as numerous other prizes within these competitions, most notably Joachim’s Warner Classics prize, which will lead to a debut album set to release in 2022.

Recent solo engagements include the Utah Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, NDR Radiophilharmonie, NFM Leopoldinum, Mariinsky Symphony Orchestra, Lithuania Chamber Orchestra, the Signature Symphony at TCC, Israel Camerata and the National Orchestra of Uzbekistan. Recent chamber music performances have taken Ioudenitch across South America with Roberto Diaz and to Chicago, New York, Connecticut and Boston with Miriam Fried.

Salina Symphony season opens Oct. 2; tickets now on sale

BENNINGTON - The final chapter of the Bennington Community Library may very well be written tonight.

In a post on its <a href="https://www.facebook.com/benningtoncommunitylibrary">Facebook page</a> this afternoon, the library announced that Wednesday night's board meeting might be the last for the library located at 300 N. Nelson Street in Bennington.

It is with a heavy heart that tonight may be the possible last board meeting for the Bennington Community Library and our doors will be shut after seven years of serving the community.

Two of our original board members that have given 110% percent are retiring from the board, leaving us shorthanded.

Efforts were made to recruit new members and have not proven fruitful.

Tonight's meeting will decide the fate of the library.

We want to thank ALL those who have supported us in the past with fundraising help, volunteering or just showing up.

We love you all and it's been a wonderful seven years!!!

Meeting Wednesday night to determine fate of Bennington library

MANHATTAN – A potato is a potato is a potato…right?&nbsp;

Maybe not, said Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee.&nbsp;

“If you taste a whole vegetable, such as a baked sweet potato, compared to slices of sweet potato that are baked, you’ll have two different foods,” said Blakeslee, who is also coordinator of the university’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Rapid Response Center for food science</a>.&nbsp;

“Cutting the vegetable opens up the cell structure to allow the natural sugars and proteins to interact with the heat,” she said. “Taste the sweet potatoes side-by-side and you will pick up different flavor compounds.”&nbsp;

Cutting vegetables to roast or bake can “take flavor to another level,” according to Blakeslee, because of a concept known as the&nbsp;Maillard reaction.&nbsp;

“The&nbsp;Maillard reaction&nbsp;is a non-enzymatic reaction between amino acids (that make up proteins) and reducing sugars (such as glucose and fructose) in the presence of heat,” Blakeslee said.&nbsp;

“In some cases, it is a desirable reaction, such as browning meat or baked bread, or roasted coffee beans. But in other cases, it is detrimental – such as in dry milk powder if it is stored improperly. It’s not the same as caramelization, which is a thermal decomposition of certain sugars in food (such as making caramel candy).”&nbsp;

Vegetables can be tasty regardless of the way consumers prepare them, Blakeslee said; it’s just a matter of preference.&nbsp;

“Try different ways to prepare and cook vegetables,” she said. “From baking, roasting, sautéing and more, the preparation can add a lot of variety to any meal.”&nbsp;

She adds: “Using different preparation methods can take a once-hated vegetable to a favorite vegetable.”&nbsp;

Blakeslee publishes a monthly newsletter called&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/newsletter" target="_blank">You Asked It!</a>&nbsp;that provides numerous tips on being safe and healthy. The closure includes the offices of Clerk of the Court, Court Services and Community Corrections.

Dickinson County District Court to be closed Sept. 16

It's almost time for the Salina Regional Health Center Service Auxiliary's Fall Rummage Sale.

The event is scheduled for Sept. 16-19 in the 4-H Building at Salina's Kenwood Park. Rummage sale times are: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 16-17; 1-5 p.m. Sept. 18; and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 19.

Each fall, the auxiliary has a rummage sale to raise funds for a variety of projects, including the Rebecca Morrison House, the Salina Regional Health Foundation's Community Health Investment Program, and scholarships for students in health-related fields of study, according to information from the auxiliary.

Donations of items to the rummage sale may be made from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 14-15 at the back door of the 4-H Building. No donations of items can be made the days of the rummage sale, the auxiliary noted in a news release.

"We are also seeking plastic grocery bag, large paper grocery bags and the 'pick-up' bags used at the grocery stores," the auxiliary added.

Additionally, volunteers are needed to help set up and on the days of the rummage sale. Persons interested in volunteering should contact Karen Morgan at 910-689-4395 to schedule a time to help.

Rummage sale times are: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 16-17; 1-5 p.m. Sept. 18; and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 19.Each fall, the auxiliary has a rummage sale to raise funds for a variety of projects, including the Rebecca Morrison House, the Salina Regional Health Foundation's Community Health Investment Program, and scholarships for students in health-related fields of study, according to information from the auxiliary.Donations of items to the rummage sale may be made from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 14-15 at the back door of the 4-H Building. No donations of items can be made the days of the rummage sale, the auxiliary noted in a news release."We are also seeking plastic grocery bag, large paper grocery bags and the 'pick-up' bags used at the grocery stores," the auxiliary added.Additionally, volunteers are needed to help set up and on the days of the rummage sale. Salina Regional Health Center Service Auxiliary Fall Rummage Sale Sept. 16-19

Kansas Wesleyan has announced its 2022-23 schedule for music and theatre performances, a slate that will include two music festivals and a collaboration with Theatre Salina during the spring semester.

There will be no charge for any KWU concert or on-campus play this year.

The schedule opens Sept. 30, when the Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble perform at 7 p.m. The fall play is next on the agenda, as KWU Theatre performs “The 39 Steps” Oct. 21–23 during&nbsp;Homecoming and Family Weekend. There will be no charge for tickets for any of the three performances. However,&nbsp;<a href="https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=HqOyoDhMXUmUvm14-AHv1xDTEzYccm1Hnx5djyaqtCJUQ1QyQzZWNFo2Q0ZHWkY4QVkyQ1VDTDdZRi4u&amp;web=1&amp;wdLOR=c5FFAC5DF-1116-A149-9DBC-0C75D6BCB58D" target="_blank">reserving tickets</a>&nbsp;through the university’s fine arts department is strongly encouraged.

One of the landmark events of the KWU year follows, as Christmas by Candlelight will be held Dec. 4 at 5 p.m. No tickets will be required. This year’s show will, officially, be the 40th&nbsp;anniversary of the annual KWU Christmas concert, as the name Christmas by Candlelight originated in 1982. The show’s theme and performing high schools will be announced at a later date.

Another Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble performance (Dec. 6, 7 p.m.) wraps up the fall semester schedule. Music returns to the stage Feb. 9 for the second annual Salina Strings Day. Master classes and performances, including guest artists Adele and Derek Stein, will take place throughout the day, all leading to a group concert that evening at the KDOT Auditorium.

The KWU choral groups – the Philharmonic Choir and Wesleyan Chorale – are scheduled to perform Feb. 19 at 2 p.m., and the wind ensemble, orchestra and strings groups will take the stage March 2 at 7 p.m.

The first of two spring festivals – KWU Jazz Fest – will take place March 20–22, and from March 31–April 16, the spring musical, “Something’s Rotten,” will run in collaboration with Theatre Salina. Tickets can be procured through Theatre Salina.

The KWU choirs will host a concert April 13 (7 p.m.), followed by a final Jazz Ensemble, Orchestra and Wind Ensemble performance April 27 at the same time. The annual Pops Concert wraps up the 2022-23 schedule May 5 at 7 p.m. in the Student Activities Center.

All music performances – other than Salina Strings Day and the Pops Concert – will be held in Sams Chapel and are scheduled to be streamed live and free of charge on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCT2D4tSne6si4k5qLE1pvHA" target="_blank">KWU Student Media YouTube page</a>. The fall play will take place in Fitzpatrick Auditorium and a decision on streaming will be announced closer to the performance date.

Various faculty recitals and special guest performances will be announced at a later date.
