TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Governor’s Council on Fitness is now accepting nominations for its annual Kansas Health Champion Awards. 

Awards are given to one outstanding individual and two outstanding organization, that make an exceptional effort to model, encourage and promote health and fitness in Kansas. Award recipients will be recognized at the Community Health Promotion Summit on Jan. 26, 2023. The deadline for nominations is Sept. 30.

“The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is proud to play a part in this important initiative that works to improve the health and wellness of Kansans,”&nbsp;said KDHE Secretary Janet Stanek, “Many people and organizations throughout the state are making healthy living a priority, and it’s important that we recognize their efforts and the impacts it has on individuals, families and communities.”

Nominees would be expected to have demonstrated:

●Work that goes beyond what is expected to model, encourage and promote a healthy lifestyle.

●Work that overcomes health inequities that lead to sedentary lifestyles and/or undernourishment.

●Far-reaching impact. Sustainable influence or activity

“In addition to promoting effective models for increasing physical activity, nutrition and tobacco-free living for replication by organizations and communities around the state, the awards also allow us the opportunity to honor the outstanding work of one individual and one organization this year,”&nbsp;said Jody Hoener, Awards Committee chair, Governor’s Council on Fitness. 

Eligible nominees might include an outstanding volunteer, a school, a local community, a newspaper or individual reporter, a local or state policy maker, or an employer, among others.

Forum to look at voting for judges, proposed amendments

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University wildlife extension specialist Drew Ricketts says managing private lands to benefit wildlife can be expensive, but there is help for landowners. &nbsp;

Ricketts said the&nbsp;<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/" target="_blank">Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks</a>&nbsp;offers the program, Habitat First, which is funded by the Pittman Robertson Act.&nbsp;&nbsp;The program assesses a tax on hunting equipment to support wildlife research and habitat improvement.&nbsp;

Ricketts said Habitat First is less complicated than most programs, making the distribution of payments and assistance easier.&nbsp;

“Let's say you know you want to convert brome or fescue back to native grass,” he said. “The program has a per acre rate that will pay for herbicide application for that specific purpose, and they have a per acre rate that they will pay for grass seed.&nbsp;

“The first step,” he added, “is reaching out to wildlife and parks to find out who your local area biologist is. They'll set up a site visit with you, talk about your goals and set up a contract if that's something you're interested in.”&nbsp;

Another program, the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP), is more familiar among producers, Ricketts said.&nbsp;

EQIP has specific, wildlife-driven sectors and is intended to be a cost share where the National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) pays 50% of the costs to improve habitat, and the producer pays the other 50%.&nbsp;

“If you’re thinking about managing rangelands for quail or prairie chickens, prescribed fire or tree removal, then I would recommend EQIP,” Ricketts said.&nbsp;

Ricketts said another cost-share program, Partners for Fish and Wildlife, is focused on at-risk species populations in Kansas, specifically the greater and lesser prairie chickens. It is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services.&nbsp;

“The producer’s share of that cost can be implementing some of the practices that the producer and the biologist decide need to be done,” Ricketts said. “For example, if prescribed fire and tree removal are part of the plan, and the producer gets the area that's under contract burned a certain number of times during the contract period, that can be their share of the cost and then the tree removal would be totally covered.&nbsp;

“If there is tree removal that needs to be done, and a producer is interested in wildlife management, and they're in the prairie chicken range, this can be a very good program for them.”&nbsp;

Landowners may also receive help through the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), an erosion program to help balance commodities markets. While it was not originally planned with wildlife in mind, practices associated with CRP management impact wildlife habitats and thus parts of the program are wildlife driven. &nbsp;

“Anytime we're planting native grass in areas where it’s lacking, it improves habitat for wildlife over time,” Ricketts said. “The State Acres for Wildlife Enhancement is one part that's specifically wildlife-driven, and a lot of that is in center pivot irrigation systems where the corners are planted to native grass that are good for pheasant and quail.”&nbsp;

Help available to improve habitat for wildlife

“Kon'nichiwa.”&nbsp;That is hello in Japanese. Today, a shipment from the United States is arriving in Japan.It’s some samples of specialty, high quality pork produced by a family halfway around the globe in rural Kansas.&nbsp;

Kaden and Emily Roush are the owners of R Family Farms and a local grocery store in Lebanon, Kan. Kaden grew up in Lebanon on a crop and livestock farm. Five generations of his family have been involved in agriculture.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hog production was a major part of the Roush family operation until the hog market crash of the 1990s. As described by the family’s website: “However, out of the ashes sprang an opportunity for an energetic little boy, a few sows, and a 4-H project.”&nbsp;

Young Kaden Roush was that little boy.&nbsp;

Roush enrolled in the swine project in 4-H, raised pigs and showed them successfully at the county fair. Soon he was selling extra pigs to fellow 4-H members.&nbsp;

In the process, Roush developed a knack for livestock evaluation. He would develop and use those skills on the livestock judging teams at Allen Community College in Iola and then Kansas State University. The national judging team tours gave Roush the opportunity to observe diversity in agriculture and potential opportunities for marketing pork.&nbsp;

Roush soon met Emily. She was raised on a three-generation wheat, corn and soybean farm near the&nbsp;rural&nbsp;community of Iola, population 5,396 people. Now, that’s&nbsp;rural.&nbsp;

Emily was active in FFA. After studying at Allen Community College, she finished her degree in agronomy at K-State and married Kaden. He earned a degree in agribusiness with a major in animal science.&nbsp;

Together, Kaden and Emily’s families embody more than two centuries of history of caring for the land and animals.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kaden and Emily thought about the opportunities for niche marketing of pork and decided to move back to his home area to launch a specialty hog enterprise. They named it R Family Farms. The Roush website states about Emily: “Although pigs were not her first love (or second, for that matter), she quickly grew to love them and joyfully welcomed them as a part of her future.”&nbsp;

The Roush’s vision was to educate consumers about where their food comes from while providing a world-class culinary experience. To do so, they chose to raise the Berkshire breed of hogs.&nbsp;

In 2015, R Family Farms broke ground on a new hog facility. The first Berkshire pigs arrived in January 2016. Today, R Family Farms is home to 75 sows that farrow all year long. The resulting litters are raised to market weight.&nbsp;About half of the meat is sold by private label and half to vendors in Missouri. In 2019, they shipped samples to Japan.&nbsp;&nbsp;Meanwhile, Kaden works as a loan officer at a local bank and Emily serves as Lebanon city clerk.&nbsp;

The family needed a specific outlet for their specialty Berkshire pork. They were supplying pork to a national chain of organic whole food stores when the chain cancelled their contract. It appeared to be a disaster.&nbsp;

Then they were contacted by Paradise Locker Meats in Paradise, Mo. That company was selling Berkshire pork to high-end restaurants and suddenly found that their source could not supply it.&nbsp;

“It was divine intervention,” Emily said. “We lost our contract and he’d lost his supplier.&nbsp;&nbsp;He needed the number of hogs that we had.”&nbsp;

The Roush’s farm supplied the pork and Paradise Locker Meats filled the order. The two businesses have worked together ever since.&nbsp;

Today, R Family Farms is using old-style outdoor production practices combined with modern day technology to bring superior quality pork to market.&nbsp;

Five years ago: Authorities sent an aircraft carrier and other Navy ships to help with search-and-rescue operations in Florida, where a flyover of the Keys revealed what Gov. Rick Scott described as scenes of devastation from Hurricane Irma. Irma weakened to a tropical storm, and then a tropical depression, and finally left Florida after a run up the entire 400-mile length of the state. An estimated 13 million people in Florida remained without power.

One year ago: Marking the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, victims' relatives and four U.S. presidents paid respects at the sites where hijacked planes killed nearly 3,000 people, while others gathered for observances or volunteer projects across the country; the anniversary was observed weeks after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, once again ruled by the same Taliban militant group that gave safe haven to the 9/11 plotters. Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum

LINDSBORG - The Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum is asking the community for ideas for how to honor a more than 100-year-old elm tree on museum grounds that has to be removed, as well as putting out a special call for assistance in covering the unexpected expense.

Lenora Lynam, executive director of the museum, said that removing the tree is the last thing the museum wants to do, but that there is little choice.

“It is this beautiful, grand tree with almost as many years of history as the roller mill itself,” Lynam said. “But it’s dying from Dutch Elm Disease, and leaving it up could put other trees in the community at risk.”

Dutch Elm Disease is caused by an invasive fungus and carried from tree to tree by elm bark beetles. The leaves of infected trees turn yellow, wilt, and brown – ultimately killing the tree. In the United States, an estimated 40 million trees have been killed by the disease.

In the case of the museum’s tree, the disease progressed quickly and means removal will need to happen quickly – both to prevent spread of the disease and to prevent falling dead limbs from damaging the museum building. Removal was expected to happen over the weekend.

With the removal, the museum is also asking for help in two areas from supporters and community members.

First, they are holding a special fundraising campaign to help defray the approximately $3,000 unbudgeted cost of the tree’s removal.

Second, the museum would like for the removed wood to not go to waste and for at least part of it to memorialize the long-lived tree. Those who have creative and meaningful ideas for how the elm wood could be used – so long as the use will not risk further spread of Dutch Elm Disease – should send the suggestion to <a href="mailto:info@oldmillmuseum.org">info@oldmillmuseum.org</a> or call 785-227-3595.

Caroline de Filippis, Community Development Director of the museum, said they are also planning to plant a replacement tree near the elm after it is removed – most likely a Northern Red Oak, which will grow to have a similar look to the elm but is not vulnerable to Dutch Elm Disease.

“It will take time to grow,” de Filippis said. “But our hope is that in time it will become just as big and beautiful as this century tree we are having to remove.”

During construction, the lots will be closed to all traffic, but the alley to the west of the parking lots will continue to be open to pedestrian traffic, the City of Salina noted in a news release.

The work is expected to last through the end of October.

The work will occur much as it did four years ago when Vogts Parga replaced the connecting lot to the north, the city noted.

 Sufficient parking to meet demand currently exists nearby, primarily south of the Downtown Fieldhouse, as shown on the map.&nbsp; 

The $470,000 project is being funded by New Market Tax Credits, according to information from the City of Salina.

I know, it may feel a little early to be talking about Christmas. But hear me out! While you might not be ready to hang the mistletoe, it’s&nbsp;never&nbsp;too early to save money for the holidays. In fact, the sooner you start saving up, the better (and less stressful) the season will be.

Too many people find themselves mid-November with nothing saved, so they turn to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/budgeting/the-costly-christmas-mistake" target="_blank">credit cards</a>&nbsp;in a panic and end up paying for Christmas until April of the next year. Not good. That’s why I like to put aside a little money each month starting in January. But if you’re just now thinking about saving, don’t worry. There’s still plenty of time to save up some cash between now and the most magical time of year. You just need a plan.

Start by creating a holiday savings fund

Think of a holiday fund like a savings account that you set up for all your holiday needs. This is where you’ll stash the money you’re saving and watch it grow as the season (finally!) gets closer.

To set your fund goal, look at how much you spent on Christmas gifts last year. Where did you overspend? Do you need to increase or lower your budget? Then, think about what you’ve got on your plate this year. How much will you be able to spend on each person at Christmas? What about parties or gatherings? Then, compare your projection with last year’s number and set your goal!

Once you’ve figured out the total you want to spend, divide it by the number of months or weeks left until Christmas. Let’s say your budget is $900 and you’re just now getting started. That means you’ll need to save $300 a month over these next three months. Make sense?

Now, the easiest way to boost your holiday budget is to cut back on spending. Way too many people think it takes a ton of money to have memorable holiday fun. What that&nbsp;really&nbsp;means, though, is your bank account will be hurting when January rolls around. Go for a cheaper celebration that helps you keep more cash in your pocket.

Here are some of my favorite ways to get the most out of that holiday budget:

Skip some of your traditions - Guess what? You don’t have to do Elf on the Shelf or an expensive Christmas card photo session. Save money by skipping out on traditions that you don’t truly have to do. Just look at your budget and be open and honest with your family as you decide what to cut and what to keep.

Cut down on the cost of gifts - You can save serious cash on presents this year—without being a Grinch. Shop sales. Use coupons. Give out baked goods. Skip the random gift exchanges. And instead of buying presents for every extended family member, have each person draw a name and buy just one gift for the person they get.

Turn overblown holiday feasts into a potluck - I love hosting family dinners and parties with friends, but I could easily blow half my holiday budget on one gathering. If you like to host, you can cook the main course and ask your guests to bring the sides. That way, you’re not stuck with the entire bill, and everyone feels good because they helped out.

I promise your holiday season will be much happier when you can check everything off while sticking to your budget—instead of spending first and worrying about the fallout later. And planning ahead, having a budget, and being mindful of your spending is how you make your money goals a reality this year. You’ll be amazed at how a few small, intentional changes can impact your holiday budget with tidings of great joy!

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. 

These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. KDHETOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued several public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae.&nbsp;A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. Local, area bodies of water still under blue-green algae advisories

Legendary NBC anchor&nbsp;Tom Brokaw&nbsp;had just returned to work on Sept. 11, 2001, after taking the summer off. A friend asked how it was to be back in the saddle.

“I’m doing fine but there’s no news,” Brokaw, now 81, complained. “It’s hard to get cranked back up.”

Little did anyone know everyone’s world was about to be changed forever.

At 8:46 a.m. on that splendid, crisp September morning, a plane hijacked by terrorists sliced into the World Trade Center’s North Tower. Seventeen minutes later, another hijacked plane smashed into the South Tower. By 10:28 a.m., both towers had collapsed, killing nearly 3,000 people in the space of 102 minutes.

By noon, a third hijacked plane plowed into the Pentagon (reported by AP at 9:43 a.m.) and a fourth, on which passengers tried to stop the hijackers, crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pa. (11:19 a.m.). No one on the four hijacked planes survived.

If ever there was a day where journalists proved the incalculable benefits of the First Amendment, and why they are so desperately needed to inform and educate the public, Sept. 11 was that day.

While many fled lower Manhattan and the Pentagon for their lives, every sort of journalist did what they have always done best: They ran toward danger. They kept their cameras trained on the horror. They commandeered taxis, borrowed bikes and jumped into strangers’ cars, ordering them to drive toward the scene. Their reports helped provide a sense of what was happening even when no one knew exactly what was happening.

More than 1,800 fashion writers from around the world in New York for the spring 2002 collection were pressed into service. Associated Press (AP) photographer&nbsp;Richard Drew&nbsp;left the show and headed to the scene, shooting some of the most arresting photos of that day. Many photographers like Drew were still using rolls of film.

“We were watching a guy clinging to the side of the building on the North Tower while people were falling from the building,” Drew told the&nbsp;<a href="https://newseumed.org/tools/lesson-plan/running-toward-danger-video-lesson" target="_blank">Newseum in 2002</a>. “You know what you have to do. You make pictures. There’s one image I shot of a man falling head first from the building. I felt like&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/richard-drew-on-photographing-the-falling-man-on-911/" target="_blank">the photo</a>&nbsp;captured part of his life.”

Twenty-one years ago, Drew and hundreds of other journalists didn’t have the technology they have today. If reporters had cell phones then, they were primitive — and didn’t work anyway with cell towers down. The planes destroyed cell towers atop the Twin Towers, knocking many TV stations temporarily off the air until they hooked up to backup satellite and cable lines. Phone lines jammed. You needed rolls of quarters for a pay phone, if you could find one. Each was 10 to 12 deep in people waiting to make calls.

Then, there was no social media to muddy up the then much-needed information expressway. Today, everyone’s a publisher. Everyone is hyperconnected for nearly every aspect of their lives. Nearly 80 percent of U.S. adults have broadband at home. In March 2001, according to the Pew Research Center, just 6 percent did.

On Sept. 11, AP writer&nbsp;Sara Kugler&nbsp;finally found a pay phone at 9:39 a.m. “Mostly I gave color,” she said. “As I got closer to Vesey Street, I saw men’s shoes. Then I realized that people had been blown out of their shoes”

About the same time, in Arlington, Va., Reuters news assistant&nbsp;Molly Riley&nbsp;ran home from a doctor’s visit to get her bike, grabbed her Nikon digital Coolpix camera and pedaled to the Pentagon. She called the news desk to ask what was happening. Senior photographer&nbsp;Herman Beals&nbsp;replied: “Everything short of World War III.”

At 10:28 a.m., a stunned&nbsp;Aaron Brown, then CNN’s anchor, watched in horror — as did millions — as the second tower collapsed into a massive pile of dust, rubble, clothing and body parts. “Good Lord, there are no words.”

It was a day like no other. For that one day – only—the heads of CBS, ABC, CNN and NBC declared whatever footage one had, the others could use. No need for written agreements. The agreement ended the next day.

For journalists, it was personal too. It was happening to them. Some were physically injured, emotionally scared, traumatized. They did their jobs while worrying about their own families, their own safety, squashing their fears to heroically document a day anyone alive then has seared into their brains.

No other news event since has gripped the nation in real time like Sept. 11. TV stations stayed live all day, nearly 80 million people glued to cable or broadcast. Or they listened to the radio or tried, mostly unsuccessfully, to get information online. Newspapers put out extra editions.

Sure, now there’s live hurricane coverage, and millions tuned in to watch former President Trump’s impeachment hearings.

But not like on Sept. 11. At about 12:36 p.m. that day, CNN’s Brown said words he’d never imagined saying. “The United States of America is under attack … Those are really hard words to say.”

And yet, anchors around the world uttered those same words on Jan. 6, 2021, the day thousands stormed the U.S. Capitol when it was in session, breaking through police barriers, climbing through windows, pummeling the police — even trying to assault then-Vice President&nbsp;Mike Pence&nbsp;— in a futile effort to prevent certification of the 2020 presidential election.

This time, the attackers were Americans. But on that day too, the nation watched in horror. And on that day too, journalists ran toward danger.
