I am getting older, and health issues over the last year have made me begin thinking about selling my small business. I have spoken with a couple of potential buyers recently, and one of them seems to be the kind of person who would handle the company very well. How and when do I tell my employees about what is going on and what may happen?

In my mind, to be a good, effective leader you have to be willing to share and discuss things with your team—whether they’re good or bad. When talking to the folks at my company, I try not to get into a lot of unnecessary stuff, but if there’s any doubt, I’m going to over-share rather than leave them fearful, uninformed or confused.

Think about it this way. If the roles were reversed, and&nbsp;you&nbsp;were in&nbsp;their&nbsp;shoes, when would&nbsp;you&nbsp;want to know? If you’d worked for someone a few years, would you feel betrayed if you didn’t know about something like this? It might sound simple, but I think that’s a good, fair way to process the situation.

If I make a mistake with my team, it’s always going to be in terms of over-<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/business/elements-of-good-communication" target="_blank">communication</a>. I expect and trust them to be mature adults in the workplace, and they know this ahead of time. Still, I try to make sure I’m very transparent about how we’re doing as a team&nbsp;and&nbsp;as a company. No small business owner can be successful unless they have great people around them. Your team needs to hear that once in a while, too, in addition to knowing you’re always going to keep them in the loop and shoot straight with them.

Human beings just want to be treated with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/business/how-to-be-a-great-leader" target="_blank">dignity and respect</a>. They want to know what’s going on where they work. When it’s something that impacts their day-to-day lives—and potentially their livelihoods—they deserve to know the facts as quickly as possible.

A Salina student is among the winners of a statewide poster contest as a part of the national Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day campaign.

Magdalena Marsh of Salina won the 5-7 age group. Other age group winners were Reaghan Breshears of Eudora (8-10 age group) and Scarlett Do of Wichita (11-13 age group). Each student had been selected as a regional winner and will receive a bicycle donated by the Kansas Turnpike Authority and a helmet donated by Safe Kids Kansas. Nearly 500 Kansas kids participated in the poster contest, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT).

As statewide winners in their age categories, they will also receive a Kindle Fire tablet from the KTA, a $50 gift card from the Fuel True/Independent Energy and Convenience and movie passes from AAA Kansas, KDOT noted. In addition to these prizes, the student’s school, class or booster club will receive $200.

Additionally, KDOT announced the three winners in the traffic safety video contest.

Maddox Votaw, Miles Morford and Madison Karten from Eudora High School, with their video titled, “Next,” won first place. They will receive first choice of a GoPro, a DJI Stabilizer and a DJI Drone, and the grand prize winner’s school, class or booster club will receive $500.

Second place went to Phoebe Fletcher, Zach Arnold, Havayah Harvat and Tanner Yankovich from Eudora High School, with their video titled, “Feeling Lucky.” Third place went to Lane Burkholder from Derby High School, for the video, “Put the Brakes on Fatalities.” Each will receive one of the remaining prizes listed above. There was a total of 35 video entries from teens across the state.&nbsp;

Police are investigating a hit-and-run wreck in central Salina Wednesday evening.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a 2007 Buick Lucerne driven by a 74-year-old Salina man was westbound on W. Crawford Street and stopped at the S. Santa Fe Avenue intersection when it was rear-ended by another vehicle. That vehicle was described as a white SUV. 

The wreck occurred at approximately 8:20 p.m. Wednesday.

After striking the Lucerne, the SUV fled the scene.

The Lucerne sustained some rear-end damage, but was removed by the driver. The SUV should have front-end damage, Forrester said.

By LESLIE EIKLEBERRY Salina PostPolice are investigating a hit-and-run wreck in central Salina Wednesday evening.Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a 2007 Buick Lucerne driven by a 74-year-old Salina man was westbound on W. Crawford Street and stopped at the S. Santa Fe Avenue intersection when it was rear-ended by another vehicle. That vehicle was described as a white SUV. The wreck occurred at approximately 8:20 p.m. Wednesday.After striking the Lucerne, the SUV fled the scene.The Lucerne sustained some rear-end damage, but was removed by the driver. The SUV should have front-end damage, Forrester said.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly, according to information from the National Weather Service. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a red flag warning in effect from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday for the following counties in our area.

Extreme grassland fire danger is forecast. Northwest winds from 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph and relative humidity as low as 15 percent are expected.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

The National Weather Service in Hastings, Neb., has issued a red flag warning in effect from 1-7 p.m. Thursday for the following counties in our area.

Northwest winds at 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph and relative humidity as low as 17 to 25 percent are forecast.

Any fires that ignite may spread rapidly and exhibit extreme fire behavior. Use extreme caution if engaging in activities that could result in fire ignition.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a red flag warning in effect from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday that includes Dickinson County.

Northwest winds at 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph and relative humidity as low as 18 percent are forecast.

Red flag warnings issued for all of our area, much of state

A soldering iron left on a table is believed to be the cause of a blaze that destroyed a $90,000 travel trailer in southern Saline County Wednesday afternoon.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that deputies and Rural Fire District No. 2 personnel were called to the 6700 block of S. Tamara Lane, just west of the Kansas Highway 4/Old 81 Highway intersection, at approximately 1:06 p.m. Wednesday for the report of a trailer fire. When they arrived, the 36-foot Forest River fifth-wheel travel trailer was fully engulfed.

According to Soldan, the owner of the travel trailer had been soldering speaker wires. She was distracted and momentarily set the soldering iron on a table and left the trailer.

The trailer was valued at $90,000. Contents in the trailer were valued at $2,000.

Unattended soldering iron blamed for $90,000 travel trailer fire

A local teen was cited after a vehicle he was driving struck another vehicle and a house Wednesday afternoon in south Salina.

Wayne Jackson, 18, of Salina, was northbound on Edward Street in a 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo when he failed to yield at the E. Magnolia Road stop sign and attempted to turn left, striking an eastbound 2012 Nissan Altima driven by a 17-year-old Salina boy, and then a house in the 2300 block of Edward Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The wreck occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Both vehicles sustained major front-end damage and were towed from the scene. 

The house sustained damage to the concrete pad for the HVAC system and to some siding and a wall, Forrester said.

Car strikes another and a house in south Salina; teen driver cited

A man who fled from a north Salina traffic stop was later found himself in the Saline County Jail.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that a deputy stopped a car in the 400 block of N. Broadway Boulevard at approximately 10:08 p.m Wednesday after it made a wide turn. When the vehicle came to a stop, the passenger, identified as Brian Cleveland, 20, jumped out and fled on foot.

Another deputy located Cleveland in the area a short while later. Soldan said Cleveland had two active warrants from Mitchell County for probation violations.

Cleveland was arrested on the two warrants and on a requested charge of interference with a law enforcement officer.

Soldan said a deputy talked with the driver and then released her.

“I cannot live without books,” said Thomas Jefferson.&nbsp;

Stephen King described books as “uniquely portable magic” and “the perfect entertainment: no commercials, no batteries, hours of enjoyment for each dollar spent.”&nbsp;

And author Jhumpa Lahiri wrote: “That's the thing about books. They let you travel without moving your feet.”&nbsp;

The benefits of books are now being discovered and shared in a new, independent bookstore in a&nbsp;rural&nbsp;community of Kansas. Jennifer Kassebaum is the owner of Flint Hills Books in Council Grove.&nbsp;

Kassebaum went to the University of Kansas and earned a law degree at the KU law school, where she met and married Bill Kassebaum. They now have a cow-calf operation on a ranch near the&nbsp;rural&nbsp;community of Burdick, population 62 people. Now, that’s&nbsp;rural.&nbsp;

Kassebaum practiced law, worked as assistant general counsel at K-State and later at Wichita State before taking early retirement. As she thought about what she would like to be involved with next, one topic kept surfacing: Books.&nbsp;

“I always enjoyed books,” Kassebaum said. She thought about opening an independent bookstore. After researching the idea, including talking to several independent booksellers, Kassebaum leased a space in a beautiful former bank building in the nearby town of Council Grove. &nbsp;

Other bookstore owners encouraged her to take the American Booksellers Association training, so she did. At one of the training sessions, the instructor stated that a successful bookstore should be at least 1,200 square feet in size and be located in a town of at least 10,000 population.&nbsp;

Uh oh. Kassebaum’s store met neither criterion.&nbsp;

After a lot of thought, she decided to proceed with her store in downtown Council Grove.&nbsp;&nbsp;The grand opening of the store was in April 2021. &nbsp;

The bookstore’s website states: “Flint Hills Books&nbsp;is a general interest bookstore nestled in the breathtaking grandeur of the Flint Hills.”&nbsp;&nbsp;The store is “where a deep love for the majestic Flint Hills and a passion for books collide.”&nbsp;

Flint Hills Books offers a curated collection of books, puzzles, and other activities and gifts. Kassebaum has simple but high standards for selecting books:&nbsp;&nbsp;“I include books I’ve read, books I want to read, and books that I think a good bookstore should have.”&nbsp;

There are bestsellers, new books, fiction, non-fiction, young adult books and more. Her store offers book-signings and a children’s section as well as cards, puzzles and gifts. The bookstore website has a section for audio books and online shopping.&nbsp;

Julie Hower, president of the Farmers &amp; Drovers Bank in Council Grove, pointed out that there has been a resurgence of woman-owned businesses in that community’s downtown.&nbsp;

For example, an independent coffee house named Watts Coffee is right down the street from Kassebaum’s bookstore, and a new brewery named Riverbank Brewing Company is on the other side of the street. There are several more.&nbsp;

These independent businesses have found ways to work together. Kassebaum partnered with Watts Coffee to produce a co-branded espresso-flavored gourmet chocolate bar. The label of the chocolate bar, produced by Sweet Granada Chocolate Company in Emporia, bears both the Watts Coffee and Flint Hills Books logos with the saying, “Because nothing is better than a good book and a great cup of coffee.”&nbsp;

Kassebaum is also partnering with Riverbank Brewing for a monthly event called Books &amp; Brews. That includes an evening social hour at the brewery where Kassebaum speaks about upcoming book releases. “I do as much locally as I can,” she said.&nbsp;

“Cami San Romani, owner of Cami’s Cakes and The Wooden Spoon, is an amazing baker whose artful cookies make bookstore events so special,” Kassebaum said.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Lindsey Patnode, owner of Flowers by Lindsey, has helped me with elegant flower arrangements for special events.”&nbsp;
