CONCORDIA - The Kansas University Medical Center has awarded Rich Baxter of Cloud County Health Center (CCHC), the Clinical Instructor of the Year Award.

Baxter has been a physical therapist at CCHC for 13 years. He attended the U.S. Army-Baylor University Graduate Program in Physical Therapy in 1994 where he earned a Master of Physical Therapy degree.

He later obtained his Doctor of Science Degree (Orthopedics &amp; Sports Medicine Physical Therapy) from U.S. Military-Baylor University Post-Professional Sports Medicine, Physical Therapy Doctoral Residency Program.

Baxter was nominated by Courtney Popelka, a physical therapist at CCHC. Baxter served as Popelka’s clinical instructor during her clinical rotation at CCHC. 

“Working with Rich has been a great experience,” said Popelka. “He has a wealth of practical knowledge from many successful years in physical therapy and is always willing to share best practices.”

“Rich is an excellent teacher and co-worker,” said Tyler Deutscher, PT, DPT, rehab services supervisor. “Our department is better because of his collaborative nature. He is very deserving of this award.”

Baxter received the award at a ceremony on Thursday in Kansas City.

The morning air has turned crisp, the temperatures have begun to drop, and the sun noticeably rises a little bit later every morning. It is definitely beginning to feel like fall on the farm. Most evenings are also filled with a layer of dust in the atmosphere stirred up by the steady movement of the combines and tractors in the surrounding fields.&nbsp; While we continue to bring the grain out of the fields during fall harvest, we have also turned our attention to the fields that will soon have green shoots growing. It’s time to start sowing wheat. After missing rain showers practically all summer, we recently received some much-needed moisture. The slow, steady rain provided us assurance that it does, in fact, still rain on occasion.&nbsp; But it also provided our soil with enough moisture to ensure a good start for most of our wheat. The hard red winter wheat we place into the ground every fall has proven time and time again it can handle a lot of extreme weather conditions throughout the year. From arctic blasts in the winter, late freezes and hailstorms in the late spring, we know this crop is hardy.&nbsp; But one thing the wheat absolutely needs to ensure a good start is moisture in the ground. For many months we’ve waited for it to rain. We’ve looked really hard for signs that a rain could be coming.&nbsp; We’ve been teased with chances of precipitation all summer to only see those chances dissipate to nothing within 10-day forecasts. We’ve prayed for it to rain.&nbsp; And we breathed a sigh of relief and gave thanks when the small rain finally came. It’s amazing how something like a rain shower can completely alter our outlook. It’s as if a rain can wash away any doubt that might have settled in our minds.&nbsp; It’s cleansing and provides the rejuvenation of faith we all need to begin a new season. It encourages us to firmly believe many seeds can and will be produced from one tiny seed planted into the ground. As primarily dryland farmers, a rain shower is life-giving for our present and future crops alike. As we continue to sow the wheat into the soil this month, we know that we’ll need more rain to get to a successful harvest. And while the forecast doesn’t show any chance of precipitation in the near future, we’ll sow anyway.&nbsp; We’ll continue the tasks on the farm this fall and plan for a successful wheat crop this summer – all while patiently waiting on a rain.

Gridiron Glory: Congratulations Ron Heller!

Kansas Wesleyan has announced that NFL Hall of Famer Will Shields will speak in Sams Chapel Monday.

Shields will be addressing various topics that highlight diversity, resiliency and the determination it takes to succeed at a professional level.&nbsp; The event, presented by local organization Tier 1 Financial, will start at 7 p.m.

Shields' appearance is open to the public at no charge.

Shields, a former NFL offensive lineman, spent 14 years with the Kansas City Chiefs. Throughout his career, he made 223 starts, never missed a game and played a franchise-record of 224 consecutive regular season games. He also made a record 12 consecutive Pro Bowl appearances.

“This is a huge opportunity for our students,” said Colton Spresser, KWU’s residential education coordinator, who helped organize the event. “Hearing from a world-class athlete who became a high-level entrepreneur provides endless learning possibilities. We are excited to open the event to the public, as well.”

Shields, a 2015 NFL Hall of Fame inductee, has remained involved in athletics. He has been owner/operator of 68's Inside Sports, a fitness and sports training facility, all while serving as a coordinator for the NFL Legends Community, an organization designed to connect former players with each other and their former teams. In addition to sports, he remains an integral part of the Kansas City community with his foundation Will to Succeed, which has helped more than 100,000 individuals since its inception. The foundation focuses on literacy, initiatives to improve creativity in young students, and helping both abused women and children in need.&nbsp;

NFL Hall of Famer Will Shields to speak at KWU

Police are investigating an incident in which a car was allegedly damaged by multiple individuals Monday night in east-central Salina.

A 20-year-old Salina man reported that he was sitting in his parents' residence when he heard a loud banging outside. He looked out and saw three to four people fleeing in a dark SUV or sedan toward Indian Rock Park. 

The incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. Monday in the 1300 block of Arlington Drive.

Forrester said both side windows and the windshield of the man's 2005 Nissan 350Z were shattered and both side mirrors were broken off.

$1,400 worth of damage done to car in east-central Salina

An 11-year-old boy was injured Monday morning when he was struck by a car at the intersection of E. Iron Avenue and Ohio Street.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a 2002 Lincoln LS driven by Katie Buchanan, 20, of Salina, was eastbound on E. Iron Avenue and attempting to turn south onto S. Ohio Street, when it struck an 11-year-old boy who was in the crosswalk with his bicycle. Witnesses told police that Buchanan had the green arrow to turn.

The accident occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m. Monday.

The boy suffered minor injuries and was transported to Salina Regional Health Center, Forrester said.

The Lincoln sustained minor front-end damage.

A 67-year-old Salina woman told police that a 40-gallon black and yellow tote containing approximately $20,000 worth of diamond and gold jewelry was stolen from her garage in the 700 block of Willis Avenue sometime between Oct. 2 and Monday, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

SALINE COUNTY —Just before 7a.m. Tuesday, the Kansas Highway Patrol responded to a rolled semi on southbound Interstate 135 just north of the Kansas Highway 4 exit in southern Saline county, according to a social media report from the KHP.

First responders shut down the right lane of the highway for recovery of the semi and a lot of beer that fell from the vehicle.&nbsp;

Semi overturns, spills load of beer in Saline County

Food, fun, and music will be the fare of the day at Street Eats &amp; Beats later this month.

Salina Area Young Professions (SAYP) annual Street Eats &amp; Beats event is scheduled for 1-5 p.m. Oct. 22 at the 67401 Plaza in Downtown Salina (N. Santa Fe Avenue/W. Ash Street).

Street Eats &amp; Beats is a free public event that will include live music, food trucks, a beer garden, and more. Food trucks include Lost In Sauce and Drycreek Buffalo Ranch. Tipsy Traveler Beverage Co. is scheduled to serve in the beer garden. 

This year, the event has an exciting twist as the SAYP Lip Sync Battle makes its return after a several year hiatus. Starting at 2 p.m., four local non-profits will perform two lip sync performances in hopes to win the grand prize check. The organizations performing will be the Salina Area United Way, CAPS, Catholic Charities of Central Kansas, and The Salina Art Center. 

"We welcome you to come cast your vote at the event for your favorite performance by purchasing voting tickets (all funds raised from these tickets sales will go to their corresponding nonprofit). You will not want to miss this these nonprofits battle it out. Each participating nonprofit will receive a monetary donation from SAYP thanks to the Greater Salina Community Foundations support," SAYP noted in a news release. 

Immediately after the Lip Sync Battle concludes, Vegan Shark is scheduled to take the stage.

Street Eats & Beats set for Oct. 22 in downtown Salina

UPDATE 11:05 a.m. Tuesday: Jen Anielski just notified Salina Post that her missing Doberman Pinscher, Lanie, has been found.&nbsp;

"The people here are so kind!  I appreciate everyone helping!" Anielski told Salina Post.

SOLOMON - A woman traveling through Kansas is desperately trying to find her missing Doberman Pinscher who ran off from the Interstate 70 rest area near Solomon Monday.

Jen Anielski told Salina Post that the year-and-a-half old Doberman named Lanie got spooked at the eastbound I-70 rest area near Solomon. She was last seen running west from the rest area at approximately 2 p.m. Monday.

"I am desperate to find her. She does not know this area and is scared," Anielski told Salina Post.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning that deputies searched the area and used the sheriff's office's drone in an attempt to find Lanie, but were not successful.

Lanie is described as being a red Doberman Pinscher who weighs approximately 50 pounds. She has a black collar and a pink rope leash. She also is microchipped.

Melander said that if you have information about Lanie or if you find her, you are asked to call the Saline County Sheriff's Office at (785) 826-6502.

Part of the area will see very high grassland fire danger. Outdoor burning is not recommended and be mindful of anything that may cause a spark.

Scattered thunderstorms will be possible tonight, with eastern Kansas into the Flint Hills having the better chances to see storms. The stronger storms will be capable of producing nickel to quarter sized hail along with 50 to 60 mph winds.

Saline County has announced that part of S. Woodward Road will be closed today through Friday for drainage work.

According to the Road and Bridge Department, S. Woodward Road between E. Magnolia Road and E. Crawford Street will be closed while crews replace a drainage structure.

The department advises motorists in the area to allow a few extra minuted of travel time to reach their destinations.

"Local and emergency traffic will always have access to private property within the sections of the closed road from the side upon which the property lies," the department noted in a news release.

Motorists are reminded that driving around road closure barricades is not only unlawful but extremely unsafe.

"For your safety and the safety of the construction workers, please obey all traffic signs," the department urged.

Saline County closing part of S. Woodward Road for drainage work

Sheriff's office pay plan, remodeling, and the jail project update are among the items on the Saline County Commission agenda for Tuesday.

Saline County Commission is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 W. Ash Street. The meetings also can be viewed on Saline County’s YouTube channel:

Commissioners are considering approving the 2021-2023 Sheriff's Office Bargaining Unit Work Agreement which includes the following.

●Implement the Wichita State University salary study with placement at the recommended new grade and the first step that provides at least a five percent increase in salary, except that no member of the bargaining unit with at one year of experience in their current position shall be placed below Step 2 in the new grade, effective Dec. 26, 2022.

●Apply a 2.5 percent increase to the 2022 pay plan effective Dec. 26, 2022.

Additionally, commissioners are scheduled to consider approving the 2023 Saline County Association of Public Employees Work Agreement which includes the following.

●Implement the Wichita State University salary study with placement at the recommended new grade and the first step that provides at least a five percent increase in salary effective Dec. 26, 2022.

●With the exception of salaries, extend the terms and conditions of the 2020-2022 work agreement for one year to expire Dec. 31, 2023.

Other items on the Saline County Commission agenda for Tuesday include the following.

●Consider proclaiming October 2022 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

●Consider awarding a contract for remodeling at the former juvenile detention facility to Harbin Construction in the amount of $225,900, including a $16,000 project contingency and $21,800 in design fees.

●Consider issuing a request for qualifications for construction manager at risk for the creation of two new courtrooms.

●Consider proceeding with the annex building at the new Saline County Jail site.

●Hear the quarterly update from emergency management.

Pay, remodeling, new jail on Saline County Commission agenda

TREGO COUNTY — Two people were injured in an accident just before 5p.m. Monday in Trego County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a Chevy S-10 pickup driven by Meagan Lynnette Herrington, 35, Ellis, was traveling in the 32000 block of Old 40 just west of Kansas 147.

The driver lost control of the vehicle when it made contact with loose dirt, rotated facing southwest, entered the south ditch and rolled ejecting both the driver and passenger.

EMS transported&nbsp;Herrington to Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital and a passenger Jordyn Lindsey Herrington, 15, Ellis, to Salina Regional Health Center. They were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

Friends of the Salina Public Library are hoping to find new homes for thousands of books and other items during the organization's upcoming used book sale.

“We have thousands of books just waiting to be taken home and enjoyed,” said Gretta Kontas, used book sale chair. “We have westerns, mystery, romance as well as general fiction. We have movies, music CDs, and games. We have expanded our offering of materials for children and young adults, so I really think there is something for everyone.”

“And our prices are so reasonable that you won’t be able to select just one. On Sunday afternoon, patrons will be able to fill a bag with books for just $5,” Laura Rhodenbaugh, Friends treasurer added.

The Friends of the Salina Public Library Used Book Sale is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 1-3 p.m. Sunday in the library, 301 W. Elm Street, downstairs in the Youth Services Annex beside the Imagination Station.

And if you're a member of the Friends of the Salina Public Library, you can get in a day early, from 4:30-7 p.m. Friday!

Not a Friends member? Library card holders can sign up to become a Friends member at the door of the book sale. The cost is $10 a year for an individual membership and $25 a year for a family membership. In addition to getting first dibs on used book sales, Friends members do no pay fines on overdue library materials, the organization noted in a news release.

The book sale is a fundraiser for the Friends organization, a volunteer, board-guided, membership organization that acts as a booster club for the library. Some Friends’ activities include providing volunteers for library events, purchasing prizes and youth activities for summer reading programs at the library, supplies for the CLASS program, and providing scholarships for teen library volunteers, the organization noted.

Friends of the Salina Public Library Used Book Sale this weekend

Between Oct. 5 and Oct. 7, 2022, the Salina Police Department worked five vehicle burglaries in central Salina involving the theft of firearms. Most, if not all, of these vehicles were unlocked at the time of the theft. These firearms will potentially be used to commit other crimes, which makes the Salina community and law enforcement less safe.

The police department is asking for the public’s assistance in securing their belongings. Be sure to lock your vehicle when unattended. If it can be avoided, don’t store valuables in your vehicle. Citizens should also keep their homes secure by locking doors and windows.

By securing your vehicle and reducing your risk of becoming a target, you can save yourself a lot of frustration, stress, and interruption to your daily life. The following are a few simple steps to ensure your car and the valuables in your car are less attractive to thieves.

You should always secure your vehicle, even if you’re parking for “just a minute.” Do this by:

●Removing your keys from the ignition and don’t store them in your car.

●Removing all valuables including weapons, or lock valuables in the trunk of the car.

Police urge members of the public to not make themselves victims

A mint green, 1994 Chevy 1500 pickup is missing from the 1000 block of Quincy Street. 

Cort Elliot, 22, Salina, reported his Chevy pickup stolen on Oct. 8. Elliot had been out of town for a couple days and, when he returned, his pickup was gone. A Smoky Valley High School and Don't Tread on Me sticker are located on the missing pickup. 

The truck also has a footlong silver strip along the side. The license plate number is 833HVU.

Chevy pickup reported stolen from 1000 block of Quincy in Salina

According to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester, at approximately 10:30 p.m.  Oct. 7, officers were dispatched to area of Morrison and 10th Street to reports of shots fired. 

Officers arrived at the scene and were unable to discover the source of the reported shots. At 11:45 p.m., officers were contacted by Wade Hardesty, 28, Salina, who reported that his residence in the 400 block of South Phillip Avenue had been shot at multiple times. 

Officers found 14 9mm shell casings in the alley behind Hardesty's residence. Hardesty, his wife and their three children were home when the shots were fired, and at least two of the rounds that entered the residence passed through the children's bedroom. Police continue to investigate.
