The Sandzén Gallery was fortunate to receive a large collection of his drawings from the Bebb family and will exhibit a selection that are now a part of the gallery's permanent collection. The exhibition will be co-curated by Cori Sherman North and John Mallery.

Though largely self-taught and coming to art later in life, Bebb established a national reputation as an exceptional color etcher. He created more than 220 print designs over his career and provided three gift prints for print societies of which he was a member – the Print Makers Society of California (1953), the Chicago Society of Etchers (1954), and for the Prairie Print Makers (1960). 

His drawings serve as a conduit to his prints, but also demonstrate his skill at capturing landscapes from his home around Muskogee, Okla., as well as favorite spots in Minnesota, Tennessee, and northern Europe.

The Sandzén Gallery was fortunate to receive a large collection of his drawings from the Bebb family and will exhibit a selection that are now a part of the gallery's permanent collection. The exhibition will be co-curated by Cori Sherman North and John Mallery.Though largely self-taught and coming to art later in life, Bebb established a national reputation as an exceptional color etcher. He created more than 220 print designs over his career and provided three gift prints for print societies of which he was a member – the Print Makers Society of California (1953), the Chicago Society of Etchers (1954), and for the Prairie Print Makers (1960). His drawings serve as a conduit to his prints, but also demonstrate his skill at capturing landscapes from his home around Muskogee, Okla., as well as favorite spots in Minnesota, Tennessee, and northern Europe.<a href="https://sandzen.org/">The Sandzén Gallery</a>&nbsp;is located at 401 N. When the Supreme Court declared in Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 that the segregationist doctrine of “separate but equal” was unconstitutional, our government, our society and our very selves were redefined.

With that decision, the court achieved equal status with the other two branches of government — legislative and executive — fulfilling the aspirations for our nation’s democracy.&nbsp;

In that watershed moment, a young&nbsp;Martin Luther King Jr. emerged as a fresh advocate and leader for a movement many hoped would use the high court’s decision to make democracy “real.”

King understood the power of the First Amendment and its guaranteed freedoms, especially the right to protest peacefully. He brought that power alive and helped realize the promise of Brown the following year when he spoke the words that gave the Montgomery, Ala., bus boycott its foundation:

With King’s words energizing a peaceful mass protest against racial injustice, the leaders and legions who were prompted to action in Montgomery after&nbsp;Rosa Parks&nbsp;was arrested for refusing to move to the back of a city bus set out to change the nation. They sparked social change and examination that continues today.&nbsp;

The course’s interdisciplinary, multimedia design makes it an excellent resource for teachers, public officials, social leaders and others who want to learn about the First Amendment’s roots in the nation’s search for racial justice over more than two centuries to “form a more perfect union.”&nbsp;

Because of the First Amendment, that mid-20th&nbsp;century movement of peaceful mass protest grew throughout the South and continued for a decade. The South’s resistance to Brown elevated the issue of racial segregation to a violation of the civil rights amendments. In turn, that propelled the federal courts at every level to reaffirm Brown in its most expansive terms — with a free press and free speakers tracking every move.&nbsp;

These cases challenged the courts from within to oppose those Southern district and appellate judges who openly espoused resistance to Brown. The Doctrine of Interposition — which allowed states to stand between the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights and federal law — had to be overturned once and for all as an unconstitutional view of states’ rights.

The protests and petitions of the 1950s and 1960s led the White House and Congress to live up to their duty to enforce the human rights at stake in Brown, which required bipartisan political commitment and action. The result was the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act, crowning moments in congressional history.&nbsp;

The Black Lives Matter movement is today’s version of Selma, Ala., where nonviolent marchers in support of voting rights for Black Americans were met on the Edmund Pettus Bridge with billy clubs and tear gas.&nbsp;As&nbsp;David Halberstam&nbsp;wrote in his book “The Fifties,” the earlier movement educated the news media, and the media educated America. The First Amendment freedoms powered that education, then and now, by providing a free press and protecting the rights of those who marched as they sought to touch the conscience of the nation.

The First Amendment is a primary tool for those who seek to revitalize in the 21st&nbsp;century the efforts made in the last century to finally fulfill the promises of freedom and equality in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

The Service Technician at Weddle and Sons will be tasked with assessing leaks, planning and performing many different small to medium-size roof repairs on steep/low slope roofs along with other company projects. The Quality Control Specialist (QCS) at Weddle and Sons will develop and demonstrate skill in overseeing the day-to-day operations of a residential roofing crew and will show an advanced level of initiative in communication with supervisors, subordinates, and clients. The starting hourly rate in the range of $16.00 - $20.00 based upon level of experience, paid biweekly, per 40 hours worked in a week with overtime paid at time-and-a-half.

Today in History - July 30

In six of the seven months in 2022, the number of confirmed COVID cases has outpaced those of last year.

"We suspect the number of positive COVID cases to be much higher in reality," said Saline County Health Officer Jason Tiller. "At-home testing is ubiquitous, and many of those who test positive aren't reporting those results and can manage their symptoms at home. In years past, many employers had policies that required an 'official test' for employees to be excused from work. Thankfully, that has changed, which has released some of the strain on the medical community's resources."

Free at-home tests can be found at several places in Saline County including Salina Family Healthcare Center and the Saline County Health Department. A resident needs only to stop by and ask for a test. Anyone with symptoms or who may have been exposed to someone with COVID is encouraged to get tested.

While the number of cases is tracking higher than last year, critical admissions to Salina Regional Health Center is significantly lower than in the same timeframe last year. Unvaccinated patients continue to account for the largest number of critical hospital admissions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The number of deaths per month is less consistent month to month compared to last year but is on the decline overall. Thus far in 2022, Saline County has lost 29 residents to COVID. During the same period last year, that number was 44. In both years, unvaccinated people made up the highest proportion of deaths to COVID.

"Obviously, we want that number at zero," said Tiller. "Vaccination continues to play a significant role in testing positive for the virus, the severity of it if you do, and the likelihood of passing it on to others."

Currently, in Saline County, residents over the age of 65 account for the highest vaccination rate, with the rate steadily decreasing in younger demographics.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Due to the high community transmission rate in Saline County, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends wearing a mask indoors in public and on public transportation, staying up-to-date on vaccines, and getting tested if you have symptoms. "When setting policies locally, we look at "The Big Three" criteria," explained Tiller. "Those areconfirmed cases, taking into account clusters and wide-spread transmission;hospitalizationsand whether or not the majority are critical; anddeaths- their frequency and what other mitigating factors there may have been. We also consider vaccination level and availability as well as testing level and availability.

"Taking all that into account and consulting with other healthcare experts in the area, at this point, I do not plan to implement any county-wide policies but encourage everyone to follow the CDC recommendations."

Organizations are encouraged to set policies that make sense and work for them. Free at-home tests can be found at several places in Saline County including Salina Family Healthcare Center and the Saline County Health Department. A resident needs only to stop by and ask for a test. Anyone with symptoms or who may have been exposed to someone with COVID is encouraged to get tested. While the number of cases is tracking higher than last year, critical admissions to Salina Regional Health Center is significantly lower than in the same timeframe last year. Unvaccinated patients continue to account for the largest number of critical hospital admissions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>The number of deaths per month is less consistent month to month compared to last year but is on the decline overall. Thus far in 2022, Saline County has lost 29 residents to COVID. During the same period last year, that number was 44. In both years, unvaccinated people made up the highest proportion of deaths to COVID. "Obviously, we want that number at zero," said Tiller. "Vaccination continues to play a significant role in testing positive for the virus, the severity of it if you do, and the likelihood of passing it on to others." Currently, in Saline County, residents over the age of 65 account for the highest vaccination rate, with the rate steadily decreasing in younger demographics.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure>

Saline Co.: COVID cases up in 2022; hospitalizations, deaths down

A Salina man has been arrested in connection to the murder of Nathan Thompson.

This afternoon, the Salina Police Department announced that they had "developed Joseph Benton Houseman, 48 year old, of Salina as the suspect" in the case.

Houseman currently is in the Salina County Jail on unrelated requested charges.&nbsp;According to the Saline County Jail Daily Booking Activity Report, Houseman was booked into the Saline County Jail at 11 p.m. June 17 on requested charges of aggravated battery, aggravated kidnapping, and possession of stolen property-firearm.

He now faces the following requested charges in connection to the Thompson case, according to information from the Salina Police Department.

On June 18, Salina police announced that they were investigating the disappearance of Thompson, 44, who hadn't been seen in more than a week. In information released on June 18, police reported that on June 13, the Salina Fire Department responded to a trailer home fire at 1635 Elgin in west Salina. No one was in the trailer at the time the blaze was extinguished, however the fire was classified as an arson.

At the time of the fire, neighbors told police that Thompson had been living in the trailer, but had not been seen for approximately a week.

On June 22, Salina police released photos of a Chevrolet Express van that police believe was used in Thompson's disappearance and asked members of the public for any information they might have about it.

On July 23, the Salina Police Department announced that human remains found in rural Ellsworth County on July 19 were identifed as those of Thompson.

Twenty-one new law enforcement officers graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on Friday at a ceremony held in the KLETC Integrity Auditorium.&nbsp;

Officer Spencer Putman of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks was the graduating class president. The speaker for the ceremony was Chief Karl Oakman of the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department. James Buettgenbach, KLETC Senior Instructor of Police, was the Class Coordinator for the 296th Basic Training Class.

Officer Ryan Lies of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and Deputy Irlick Moreno of the Rice County Sheriff’s Office were placed on the Director’s Honor Roll. Deputy Moreno was additionally awarded the Larry Welch Academic Award for having the highest GPA in the class. Officer Tyler Hynes was awarded the Fitness Medal for having the most miles completed (223.8) and for having the most improvement on his physical assessments. Officer Ryan Lies from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks was recognized during the ceremony for his firearms proficiency as the class’ “Top Shot.”

Graduates receive certificates of course completion from KLETC and Kansas law enforcement certification from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority. The training course fulfills the state requirement for law enforcement training. Classroom lectures and hands-on applications help train officers to solve the increasingly complex problems they face in the line of duty.

Established by the Kansas Legislature in 1968, KLETC trains the majority of municipal, county, and state law enforcement officers in Kansas and oversees the training of the remaining officers at seven authorized and certified academy programs operated by local law enforcement agencies and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

About 300 officers enroll annually in KLETC 14-week basic training programs. KLETC offers continuing education and specialized training to over 10,000 Kansas officers each year. KLETC is located one mile west and one mile south of Yoder, near Hutchinson, and is a division of the University of Kansas Lifelong &amp; Professional Education.

Saline County responds concerning election text

Salina Area Technical College is accepting applications from individuals interested in serving on the college’s Board of Trustees.

“The Board sought new applicants in May, and the response was amazing,” said Salina Tech President Greg Nichols. “We had many excellent members of the community willing to lend their knowledge and experience.”

However, as Nichols and the trustees discussed the applications, they realized something was missing.

In recent years, Salina Tech has added Practical Nursing and Associate Degree Nursing programs, and is adding a Dental Hygiene program starting this fall. That’s a huge shift toward health care, and yet just one of the nine current trustees is from the healthcare sector.

At their meeting earlier this week, the trustees decided to ask again for applications, this time specifying they were looking for someone representing health care, and preferably dentistry.

The nine-member Board is the college’s governing body, and determines goals and direction for the institution. New board members are appointed by the board itself, and serve terms of three years, with terms starting on July 1.

The board typically meets on the fourth Monday of the month, and occasionally has special meetings at other times.

Application deadline is Aug. 15, and the board will consider the applications at its Aug. 22 meeting.

Salina TechSalina Area Technical College is accepting applications from individuals interested in serving on the college’s Board of Trustees.“The Board sought new applicants in May, and the response was amazing,” said Salina Tech President Greg Nichols. “We had many excellent members of the community willing to lend their knowledge and experience.”However, as Nichols and the trustees discussed the applications, they realized something was missing.In recent years, Salina Tech has added Practical Nursing and Associate Degree Nursing programs, and is adding a Dental Hygiene program starting this fall. That’s a huge shift toward health care, and yet just one of the nine current trustees is from the healthcare sector.At their meeting earlier this week, the trustees decided to ask again for applications, this time specifying they were looking for someone representing health care, and preferably dentistry.The nine-member Board is the college’s governing body, and determines goals and direction for the institution. The music of Led Zeppelin is coming to the Stiefel Theatre stage in October.

Get The Led Out is scheduled for 8 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

From the bombastic and epic, to the folky and mystical, Get The Led Out (GTLO) have captured the essence of the recorded music of Led Zeppelin and brought it to the concert stage.

A local man is out a laptop computer after it went missing from his room at a south Salina hotel.

The 46-year-old Salina man told police that he left his room at the Rodeway Inn, 3932 S. Ninth Street, at approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday. When he returned about 8 p.m., he noticed that the nightstand drawer was open and that his Dell Latitude 5580 laptop was missing from a computer bag on the sofa, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

Forrester said there were no signs of forced entry.

Police investigating burglary at south Salina motel

The Salina Police Department Thursday afternoon identified the man whose body was found in the backyard of a residence in the 900 block of W. South Street on July 8. 

On Tuesday, police were able to confirm that the body found was that of Adam Noe Guzman, 29, of Salina, the department noted in a news release issued this afternoon.
