Ambassadors and volunteers with Wreaths Across America will be “celebrating America’s heroes” in Salina Oct, 25.

The free Wreaths Across America Mobile Education Exhibit is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on that Tuesday at the Salina Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1432 parking lot, 1108 W. Crawford.

The exhibit is not only “an instrument to bring communities together to learn about the Wreaths Across America mission: to remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach our children the value of freedom,” according to promotional materials, “but also to bridge the gap between active-duty service members, veterans and civilians.”

Presented by the Mary Wade Strother Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, WAA’s goal is to bring communities and the military together with education, stories and interactive connections highlighting American military service, sacrifice and patriotism.”

A “semi-sized trailer” will be parked in the VFW parking lot, said Doug Randolph, president of the Salina Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 809.&nbsp;

“This is a great event for Salina and the surrounding communities,” he said. “This is free to the public, and offering a lot of information for veterans, families, and all those who would like to drop by.”

The non-profit Wreaths Across America is best known for placing wreaths on veterans’ headstones at Arlington National Cemetery every December. Last year, the organization placed more than 2.4 million wreaths at more than 3,100 participating locations across the nation.

On National Wreaths Across America Day, Dec. 17 this year, the organization’s mission to Remember, Honor and Teach will be carried out with heath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, as well as locations in all 50 states, at sea and abroad, according to the WAA website. Visit&nbsp;<a href="http://wreathsacrossamerica.org/" target="_blank">wreathsacrossamerica.org</a>&nbsp;to learn how to get involved.&nbsp;

WAA endeavors to use the exhibit to not only teach younger generations about service and sacrifice, but to share stories of patriotism and love of country throughout the U.S.

The exhibit pulls into any area. All veterans, active-duty military, their families and community members are invited and encouraged to visit, take a tour and speak with WAA ambassadors and volunteers.

Nearly three million Vietnam veterans across the U.S. have yet to be officially welcomed home, according to a WAA.

As part of the organization’s partnership with the United States States of America Vietnam War Veterans Commemoration in 2021, the Mobile Education Exhibit officially welcomed home more than 1,500 Vietnam veterans with a pinning ceremony that included a signed proclamation from the U.S. President.

Local COVID-19 safety procedures will be in place to protect the health of all visitors in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control recommendations.&nbsp;

In our area, the funding includes&nbsp;$64,193 for&nbsp;Mitchell County and&nbsp;$23,375 for&nbsp;28th Judicial District Community Corrections in Saline County.

“I&nbsp;commend the men and women of Kansas who uphold our laws&nbsp;and keep our communities&nbsp;safe,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“These grants will provide our law enforcement&nbsp;officers and criminal justice agencies with the resources they need to fight crime&nbsp;and support victims.”&nbsp;

This funding comes from&nbsp;the Federal Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Kansas Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (KCJCC) oversees the&nbsp; federal criminal justice&nbsp;funding made available to Kansas through the U.S. Department of Justice.&nbsp;The KCJCC membership is representative of the Governor,&nbsp;the&nbsp;Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Attorney General, the Secretary of Corrections, the Superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol, and the Director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A total of $2,379,652 was awarded to 27 agencies.&nbsp;

Aaron Lewis coming to Salina's Stiefel Theatre in February

ABILENE - A former Salina Police detective has been named the new Dickinson County undersheriff.

Jeffrey Vaughan began his duties as Dickinson County undersheriff on Monday, according to a news release from Dickinson County Sheriff Jerry Davis.

Prior to joining the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office, Vaughan served as a detective with the Salina Police Department. He joined the Salina Police Department in 2007, and while there also served as a K9 handler and a field training officer. Vaughan also was a member of the Salina Police Department SWAT team.

Vaughan began his more than 18 years in law enforcement with the Scott City Police Department in March of 2004. While there, he served as a K9 handler and worked on a multi-jurisdictional drug task force.

Vaughan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice from Fort Hays State University.

"As a detective, Jeff participated in various types of felony level investigations. I am honored to have Jeff as our undersheriff and look forward to continuing to expand our agency's capabilities," Davis said.

Former Salina police detective new Dickinson County undersheriff

A motorcycle stolen from a west Salina residence was later found nearby.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that officers were sent to the 1700 block of Beverly Drive for the report of a stolen 2005 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy motorcycle, valued at $5,000. The motorcycle was stolen sometime between 4 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The chain that had been securing the motorcycle had been cut. Damage to the chain was estimated at $50. 

The manager of the trailer park along Beverly Drive reported that the motorcycle was possibly behind a residence in the 1600 block of Beverly Drive. An officer did locate the motorcycle there, Forrester said.

Stolen motorcycle later recovered nearby in west Salina

A Salina man was arrested in Dickinson County after a high-speed chase along Interstate 70 that began in Saline County late Tuesday night.

At approximately 11:35 p.m. Tuesday, an officer with the Salina Police Department observed a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche with an expired license plate leaving the parking lot of Flying J Travel Center, 2250 N. Ohio Street, and heading north on N. Ohio Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The officer attempted to stop the pickup as it was turning eastbound onto I-70, but the pickup took off and a pursuit ensued. Speeds reached upto 100 mph, Forrester said.

The officer terminated the pursuit at the Dickinson County line, but Dickinson County Sheriff's deputies were later able to stop the pickup and take the driver, identified as Tyrone Fenton, 43, of Salina, into custody. 

Fenton faces the following requested charges in Dickinson County, according to Dickinson County Jail booking information.

●Use/possess w/intent to use drug paraphernalia into human body

●Driving while a habitual violator; 3rd or subsequent conviction

●Driving while suspended; 3rd or subsequent conviction

●Yield emergency vehicle; Fail; Unknown circumstances

●Vehicles; Operate vehicle without registration or w/expired tag

Requested charges in Saline County include the following, according to Forrester.

I bought a bag and will make cranberry bread with it soon. It might seem odd in Kansas but, for me, those cranberries are one of the surest signs of fall and a reminder of home. Where I grew up, cranberries are a big deal. My parents live in the Wisconsin county with the highest number of acres in cranberry production in the U.S., most of their neighbors grow them, and I even took cranberry science in high school. I love sharing fun facts about cranberries like they do not grow in water. The image you may be thinking of where people are in hip waders with water past their knees is actually during cranberry harvest. Since cranberries are buoyant, the beds where they grow are flooded to make removing berries from the vines with a beater and then collection at one end of the bed easier. Cranberry growers also use water to protect their crop. Harvest is typically from the end of September through October, when the nights are getting cold enough that the berries are at risk of frost damage. &nbsp;Growers have alarm systems to alert them of dangerous temperatures. When the alarms sound, they start their irrigation systems to coat the berries in water. As the water freezes a process called heat of fusion occurs and enough heat is given off to protect the crop. The cold is a necessary part of the fruit’s development as lower temperatures contribute to deepening the berry’s red color, which can bring a premium on the crop. There is something inspirational about the fact that the closer cranberries come to being destroyed, the more they increase in value. There are actually lots of plant equivalents to the saying “what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.” Drought stressed wheat will have higher protein content. Giant Sequoia seeds can only germinate after a fire. Adversity is sometimes the most effective way for us to gain the character that we need to succeed in life. One particular memory from my childhood comes to my mind when I think about failure pushing us to be our best. When I was 11, I took tractor safety to get my permit so I could drive on public roads. Since I was a relatively inexperienced driver, my dad spent time with me practicing all the components of the test. My dad tried to be patient but to the delight of my older brothers, I was a natural at all the wrong moves, and I am sure my dad was embarrassed. Within the first 30 seconds of the test, I ran over a pole on the course, which gave me enough points that one more mistake would cause me to fail the test. However, I was determined to pass the test and prove to my brothers I could do it. I took a few breaths and proceeded through the course with as much skill and focus as an 11-year-old could muster. I didn’t make another mistake for the remainder of the test and received my certificate. That same lesson has repeated itself through my life dozens of times when I was on the verge of failure. In those moments, I learned important lessons in life and how capable I really am. We all could benefit from acting more like cranberries by realizing that the closer you get to failure, the bigger the reward will be.

INSIGHT: Acting like cranberries

The Department of Education (ED)’s application for federal student loan debt relief is&nbsp;<a href="https://studentaid.gov/debt-relief/application">now open</a>&nbsp;and, of course, scammers are on the move — trying to get your money and personal information. Luckily, there are ways to stop them, so keep reading to find out how to protect yourself as you apply for relief.

As people file their applications, ED will review them on a rolling basis. Pack some patience and follow the process…not those who say they can put you in front of the line. Because those are scammers. Here’s what to know right now to steer clear of scammers:

●Apply at&nbsp;<a href="http://StudentAid.gov/DebtRelief">StudentAid.gov/DebtRelief</a>.&nbsp;Nowhere else.&nbsp;Right now, application is online only and in English and Spanish.&nbsp;A paper application will be available later.

●Don’t pay to apply.&nbsp;It’s FREE. Anyone who says you need to pay is a scammer. And anyone who guarantees approval or quicker forgiveness: scam, scam, scam.

●Know what to share, where, and when. The real application will ask for your name, birth date, Social Security number, phone number, and address. But, when you apply online, you don’t have to upload or attach any documents.

Now that student loan debt relief application is open, spot the scams

It has been anecdotally referred to as "The Ad Astra Stage," "The Stage at Santa Fe and Ash" and "The New Stage." Whatever you might call it, it now has an official name.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Brad Anderson, executive director of Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, on Monday told Salina City Commissioners that the Arts &amp; Humanities Commission was recommending that the new stage at the N. Santa Fe Avenue/Ash Street intersection be named "City Lights Stage."&nbsp;

During the naming process, Salina Arts &amp; Humanities followed city municipal naming procedures and held multiple public meetings to allow for public input. Due to the stage being owned by the city, Salina Arts &amp; Humanities also decided against the incorporation of sponsorship in the name.&nbsp;

"It is a city stage. It is not a private entity or private stage. It is a city space," Anderson said.&nbsp;

Thanks to recent revitalization efforts downtown and the Salina Streetscape Project, multi-colored lights&nbsp;are now a signature element in downtown Salina. The chosen name "City Lights Stage" is an effort&nbsp;to be part of that same movement.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Using the idea and celebrating light is important," said Anderson. "Highlighting the idea of a light or a beacon and showing off what the community has to offer."&nbsp;

The group - Hannah Alkire and Joe Scott - will be in residence in Salina area schools Thursday and Friday, thanks to the Arts Infusion Program of Salina Arts &amp; Humanities.

The residency also includes a community performance that is open to the public at no charge at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Marymount Properties Chapel, 2035 E. Iron Avenue.

Gridiron Glory: Congratulations Aubrey Sams!

A local man was injured in a two-vehicle wreck Monday morning in north Salina.

Lee Butterfield, 57, of Salina, was eastbound on York Avenue in a 2003 Ford Excursion when he pulled out in front of a 1997 Mazda B2300 pickup driven by William Ash, 54, of Salina, that was northbound on N. Ohio Street, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

The wreck occurred at approximately 7:10 a.m. Monday.

The Mazda's airbag deployed and Ash received minor injuries, but was not transported to the hospital, Forrester said.

The Excursion sustained extensive passenger-side damage and the Mazda sustained front-end damage. Both were removed by the drivers.

Forrester said Butterfield was cited for failure to yield and no proof of insurance. Ash was cited for no proof of insurance.

Register in person at your local County Clerk's Office. In Saline County, the County Clerk's Office is located in Room ??? of the City-County Building, 300 W. Ash Street.

Register online. The Kansas Secretary of State offers an <a href="https://sos.ks.gov/elections/voter-information.html">online registration option</a>.

Register by mail. You can <a href="https://sos.ks.gov/elections/voter-information.html">download a registration form</a> from the Kansas Secretary of State's Office. If you choose this option, your registration must be postmarked by today!

You also can register to receive your ballot by mail. Download the advanced voting by mail form from the <a href="https://sos.ks.gov/elections/voter-information.html">Kansas Secretary of State's website</a>. Advanced ballots will begin being mailed out on Wednesday.

If you choose to return your completed ballot by mail, it must be postmarked on or before Nov. 8. You also can drop off your completed ballot in the County Clerk's office. 

Some counties also offer safe and secure ballot drop box locations. In Saline County, the drive-up ballot drop box is located on the half-circle drive in front of the City-County Building at 300 W. Ash Street. (Note: Ballot drop boxes are closed at 7 p.m. on Election Day.)

LINDSBORG –&nbsp;Smoky Valley Arts and Folklife Center, 114 1/2 S. Main, Lindsborg, in&nbsp;partnership with The Raymer Society, will host an exhibit by local designer Tara Killingsworth from Nov. 4 through Dec. 24. 

The exhibition will open with a fashion show and reception on Nov. 4, from 6-8 p.m.&nbsp;

The exhibition reflects the artist’s journey through grief using her medium of clothing design. Killingsworth is the owner of the Ivory Thimble in Lindsborg. Located downtown since 2016, the tailor’s shop offers custom clothing, alterations, and mending.

Killingsworth, originally from Geneseo, grew up on a farm a few miles outside of Kanopolis Lake and graduated from Quivira Heights High School in Bushton She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in apparel and textiles with specialization in design from the college of human ecology at Kansas State University in 2012. She worked as a tailor/costume designer in Los Angeles before returning to Kansas to make one-of-a-kind clothing.

“The past year was a year of big loss, big change, and lots of learning for me,” she says in her artist statement. “It is sad that sometimes it is only through loss that we get to take account of all that is good and find peace in the stillness. But also wonderful that through loss we can be grateful for all the good we have. I am thankful for it all – change, sameness, peace, stress, sadness, happiness, loss, and God’s gifts.”

The Smoky Valley Arts and Folklife Center is open 1-5 p.m. Friday through Sunday and is supported by the KCAIC, NEA, and the Raymer Society.

On Aug. 31, a little-known but fast-growing broadband company received nearly half a billion dollars from the federal government to expand rural access, including in Kansas and Nebraska.

Texas-based <a href="https://nextlinkinternet.com/">Nextlink Internet</a> plans to deploy a mix of fiber and fixed wireless services across 11 states with funding from the Federal Communications Commission's Rural Broadband Opportunity Fund.

“We are excited to partner with the FCC to deploy gigabit connectivity to households across rural America," Bill Baker, co-founder and CEO, said in a statement. "With significant licensed spectrum holdings to support gigabit wireless plus fiber projects ready to kick-off construction, we are well-positioned to move quickly to connect the unconnected.”

Of the $429 million committed by the FCC, more than $50 million is devoted to expansion in Kansas and Nebraska, creating service for an additional 26,000 customers in Kansas and 14,000 in Nebraska. 

"The majority of it is fixed wireless, but fiber is a growing part of our business and will be going forward," said Claude Aiken, Nextlink chief strategy officer. "One of the benefits of fixed wireless is it's quicker and less costly to deploy ... and is relatively easily upgradeable."

Fixed wireless uses an access point — generally located on an existing tower or other high point in a service area — to connect customers who otherwise are unable to get high-speed service via a traditional provider.

Aiken said a typical fixed wireless deployment generally offers 100 MB download and 20 MB upload speeds, although he said the company's technology could offer much higher speeds.

"The technology has really improved by leaps and bounds over the course of the past few years," he said. "We just did a deal with Wise County, Texas, to build out 500-by-100 across 95 percent of the county."

COMING SOON: Legacy broadband providers react to massive FCC award for Nextlink

In 2021, <a href="https://nextlinkinternet.com/american-tower-rural-america/">Nextlink and American Tower entered into a colocation agreement,</a> allowing Nextlink to place equipment on more than 1,000 existing towers across 11 states.

"We do a mix of different things with towers. We'll construct our own, we'll leverage our partnership with American Tower where it makes sense .. or find a high point in a community," Aiken said. "Whatever the best solution is to get to the community."

While there is no specific build schedule or timelines yet, the FCC requires RDOF projects to be completed within six years, with requirements that milestones of completion are met after two years and then annually.

Nextlink already has offices in both Kansas (Kingman, Goddard, Salina, Great Bend) and Nebraska (Hastings, Norfolk, Lincoln, Beatrice), and Aiken said Nextlink plans more expansion as its service area grows.

"It's still a little preliminary to say what's going where," he said. "In the near term, it will be where we have existing public/private partnerships. But we're always looking at new areas for growth and folks who really need high-quality connectivity ... where it makes economic sense and where there is a community need."

While the federal fund is targeted at those who lack rural high-speed internet access, Aiken said there is a competitive aspect to the expansion, as well, offering a second option for some customers.

However, Aiken said some providers without the capital to build into rural areas have welcomed Nextlink.

"In having some of those conversations with other providers, there are some folks who are very happy to kind of stay in their existing footprint and service folks in town and not do the hard work of connecting the far-flung farmland and ranchland," Aiken said. "On the other hand, we do compete and offer that second option."

Nextlink currently serves 88,000 homes and businesses across its seven-state footprint and employs 950. In 2017, when the company served only an area on the outskirts of Dallas-Fort Forth, the company employed 150. 

"Projecting forward, we anticipate pretty significant employee growth in Kansas and Nebraska," Aiken said, noting the project builds and deployment will be kept in-house "as much as possible."

This is the second major influx of federal dollars to fuel growth at Nextlink. <a href="https://www.fiercewireless.com/tech/here-s-how-nextlink-biggest-caf-ii-auction-winner-spending-its-281m">In 2018, the company was awarded $281 million</a> as part of the Connect America Fund Phase II program, which sparked expansion into Kansas and Nebraska.
