MCPHERSON –&nbsp;The idea of “paying it forward” was important to Dean Coughenour, a 1951 graduate of McPherson College, and a recent gift made to the college will ensure that students benefit from the same generosity he received as a student. The college received $1.5 million from the Dean Coughenour Trust to establish an endowed scholarship fund and support the Student Debt Project.

The Dean Coughenour Endowed Scholarship will focus on Kansas students who demonstrate financial need, especially those who have shown leadership abilities. The $1 million endowment will fund $50,000 in scholarships each year. The remaining funds will support the continued growth of the Student Debt Project by increasing the matching funds awarded to participants.

Students participating in the Student Debt Project are required to work. All the income earned from their job(s) is applied to their McPherson College account, which earns them a 25% match, funded by McPherson College donors. In the fourth year of the program, students have reduced their debt at graduation by $12,000 per student, and the retention of students participating in the program is 93%.

“Both of these initiatives appealed to me,” said Susan Lundstrom, Coughenour’s daughter. “They reflect my Dad’s belief that students should take responsibility for their education while also honoring his commitment to paying back the kindness given to him as a student.”

Coughenour grew up in McPherson. Raised by a single mom during the Great Depression, college would not have been an option had it not been for the generosity of a local doctor who contributed financially toward his college education. According to Lundstrom, the expectation was that he would put effort into his education and, if he could in the future, similarly help someone else.

After graduating with a degree in history and a minor in English, he and his wife Verlla, whom he met at McPherson College, moved to Oberlin, where he taught in the high school for five years. In 1958, he switched careers and moved to Manhattan, where he purchased Ag Press and served as editor of the Grass and Grain newspaper. He successfully built his publishing business for the next 30 years.

“McPherson College was one of the few things that my dad consistently supported,” Lundstrom said. “His experience there established a foundation for the rest of his life. It seems fitting that we continued to support something so dear to him.”

President Michael Schneider said, “Dean believed that students should have some ‘skin in the game’ and take responsibility for their college education. Both Dean and Verlla recognized the importance of work and would be pleased with the progress students are making to graduate debt free. A Salina teen escaped injury after a pickup he was driving rolled and caught fire Friday night southeast of the city.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that Josiah Reilly, 19, of Salina, was southbound on S. Holmes Road just south of E. Water Well Road when a wash-boarded area of the roadway caused him to lose control of the 1969 Chevrolet C10 pickup he was driving. The pickup fishtailed, rolled onto its side in the west ditch, and caught fire.

Reilly was able to escape the pickup without injury, Soldan said.

The accident occurred just after 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Rural firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Multiple tools stolen from SW Salina house being remodeled

Police are investigating an arson after a trailer loaded with tree limbs was set ablaze Friday evening in west Salina.

Randy West, district engineer in Salina, will be retiring after 44 years of dedicated service to the Kansas Department of Transportation. His last day of work is Sept. 19.

West began his career with&nbsp;KDOT&nbsp;in 1979 as an engineer in training in Garnett where he worked on several construction projects, such as the four-lane alignment for U.S. 69 from Louisburg to Overland Park. He then was promoted to road design at&nbsp;KDOT&nbsp;headquarters in Topeka, where he worked for another year before promoting to bridge design in Topeka. In 1986, West was promoted to area engineer in Ellsworth where he settled down just outside of town. In 2003, he was promoted to maintenance engineer in Salina, and in 2007, he was named to his current position of district engineer.

West is very proud to be in District Two where he’s been able to take part in rebuilding the interstate. He has always told his staff to take great pride in what they do because without the transportation system, nobody could get where they’re going. 

“Our mission is vital to the safety and well-being of the citizens of Kansas and the traveling public,” West said. “It has been an honor to be a part of&nbsp;KDOT&nbsp;with the opportunity to serve our family, friends, neighbors and the great state of Kansas.”

In retirement, West plans to enjoy traveling, fishing and working on the farm. Most of all, he looks forward to spending more time with his wife, Kristi, two sons, Kyle and Ryan, and other family members.

“Kristi and I have a great time with Kyle, Ryan, his wife Jenni, and our two grandchildren, Ruby and Molly. It will be truly special spending time with them and doing whatever opportunities the future brings,” West said.

West to retire after 44 years of service to KDOT

Nuclear power reactors are not nuclear bombs. To understand the huge difference, it is necessary to understand the levels of uranium enrichment. Uranium from open pit or underground mining is usually only 0.1 percent or 1/1,000th uranium. It must go through a milling process in order to separate out most of the uranium and discard the ore.

This natural uranium is made of a mix of 238U and 235U. Uranium 238 is stable, but 235U is “fissile.” This means that it is split with neutrons and in turn produces particles to continue the reaction, splitting other 235U atoms. The naturally extracted ore is usually over 99 percent the inert 238U. Nuclear reactors generally require enriched uranium with higher concentrations of 235U, usually between 3.5 and 4.5 percent.

The public often hears of “gas centrifuges.” Two processes can be used to increase the concentrations of 235U: gaseous diffusion and gas centrifugation. Both processes take time.

In contrast to power plants, atomic bombs use approximately 93.5 percent enriched uranium. This involves advanced technology and expertise to produce. Thus many countries have long used nuclear power without developing the capacity to develop atomic bombs.

As a young science teacher teaching middle school in Kentucky in 1970, the school had no money to buy or rent films. But I could get free films from the center in Oak Ridge and show the extensive testing that was occurring in Hanford, Washington and other nuclear energy sites. “Today we burn the rocks, tomorrow we will burn the oceans” was an euphoric introduction. “Burning rocks” referred to nuclear fission of uranium and “burning the ocean” was a generalization about moving to controlled fusion as seen in hydrogen bombs.

This later still remains a dream but using a tokamak or laser to control a fusion nuclear reactor may someday come true. The energy from 2.2 pounds (1 kilogram) of uranium concentrated in an atomic bomb results in about 17.5 thousand tons of TNT in explosive energy. But controlled in a nuclear power plant, using far lower levels of enrichment, that reaction can produce a tremendous amount of beneficial energy spread out over time and with no carbon emissions once operating.

Cooling the core is critical to keeping nuclear plants safe. Chernobyl, an old-design nuclear plant, and Three Mile Island and Fukushima all proved how critical it was to maintain the cooling system. Due to these events, modern reactors are being modified so they can safely shut down, which means the&nbsp; reactor is brought down to a permanently “uncritical” state so the heat that is still generated is safely dissipated.

Japan saw the unexpected tsunami in 2011 sweep over the electric generators that kept the Fukushima plant safe and the limited meltdowns caused concerns for this small country that lacks other clean fuel sources. Japan decommissioned 21 nuclear reactors and restarted 10 that had been shut down after Fukushima. Twenty-three are still being reviewed. On July 29, Japan’s economy minister suggested next-generation reactors could be adopted in the 2030s.

France has long relied on nuclear power for over three-fourths of its electricity. In contrast, Germany responded to the Fukushima event by shutting down its plants, but is considering reactivating two nuclear plants due to the cut in natural gas supplies from Russia.

Much hope is now being placed in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). While Western countries are now beginning to work on designs of SMRs, China has already designed, tested and now connected to the power grid the world’s first SMR eight months ago. First reported in Bloomberg News back on December 20, 2021, “China Huaneng Group Co.’s 200-megawatt unit 1 reactor at Shidao Bay is now feeding power to the grid in Shandong province, the China Nuclear Energy Association said....”

This last April 19, the U.S. administration opened applications to access a $6 billion program to stop American nuclear power plants from shutting down. According to the D.O.E., ninety-three U.S. nuclear power plants generate over half of America’s carbon-free energy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Study sessions and city commission meetings will take place in–person in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 West Ash Street, and via Zoom until further notice. ●The trash enclosure has been competed.

It is anticipated that the courts will be completed by mid-October.

Additionally, the following upgrades to the former pool house building are needed, according to the Salina Tennis Alliance report.

In its report, the Salina Tennis Alliance noted that a "donor has come forward with a $500,000 donation over 10 years for naming of the complex." The naming would need to be approved by the city commission. The donation would be used for operational purposes, according to the report.

Commissioners also are scheduled to hear a Park Master Plan update from Salina Parks and Recreation that includes a section about the new tennis facility.

The Park Master Plan presentation also includes information about the following.

●The tennis courts and proposed sand volleyball courts at Jerry Ivey Memorial Park

●Converting the tennis courts in Oakdale Park to pickleball courts

●The possible demolition of the old Oakdale swimming pool - now a mural - to create additional event space for the Smoky Hill River Festival and other special events

●The horseshoe pits and basketball court in Sunset Park

●Park amenity improvements and park signage

The regular meeting is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Commissioners are scheduled to conduct a public hearing to consider exceeding the Revenue Neutral Rate and the proposed 2023 budget for the City of Salina.

Along with that, commissioners are to consider approving a proposed resolution to  levy a  property  tax  rate  exceeding  the  Revenue Neutral Rate. They also are scheduled to consider approving a proposed ordinance, on  first  reading, to adopt and appropriate  the 2023 annual budget.

Other items on the city commission agenda for Monday include the following.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Governor’s Council on Fitness is now accepting nominations for its annual Kansas Health Champion Awards. 

Awards are given to one outstanding individual and two outstanding organization, that make an exceptional effort to model, encourage and promote health and fitness in Kansas. Award recipients will be recognized at the Community Health Promotion Summit on Jan. 26, 2023. The deadline for nominations is Sept. 30.

Forum to look at voting for judges, proposed amendments

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University wildlife extension specialist Drew Ricketts says managing private lands to benefit wildlife can be expensive, but there is help for landowners. &nbsp;

Ricketts said the&nbsp;<a href="https://ksoutdoors.com/" target="_blank">Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks</a>&nbsp;offers the program, Habitat First, which is funded by the Pittman Robertson Act.&nbsp;&nbsp;The program assesses a tax on hunting equipment to support wildlife research and habitat improvement.&nbsp;

Ricketts said Habitat First is less complicated than most programs, making the distribution of payments and assistance easier.&nbsp;

“Let's say you know you want to convert brome or fescue back to native grass,” he said. “The program has a per acre rate that will pay for herbicide application for that specific purpose, and they have a per acre rate that they will pay for grass seed.&nbsp;

“The first step,” he added, “is reaching out to wildlife and parks to find out who your local area biologist is. They'll set up a site visit with you, talk about your goals and set up a contract if that's something you're interested in.”&nbsp;

Another program, the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP), is more familiar among producers, Ricketts said.&nbsp;

EQIP has specific, wildlife-driven sectors and is intended to be a cost share where the National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) pays 50% of the costs to improve habitat, and the producer pays the other 50%.&nbsp;

“If you’re thinking about managing rangelands for quail or prairie chickens, prescribed fire or tree removal, then I would recommend EQIP,” Ricketts said.&nbsp;

Ricketts said another cost-share program, Partners for Fish and Wildlife, is focused on at-risk species populations in Kansas, specifically the greater and lesser prairie chickens. It is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services.&nbsp;

“The producer’s share of that cost can be implementing some of the practices that the producer and the biologist decide need to be done,” Ricketts said. “For example, if prescribed fire and tree removal are part of the plan, and the producer gets the area that's under contract burned a certain number of times during the contract period, that can be their share of the cost and then the tree removal would be totally covered.&nbsp;

“If there is tree removal that needs to be done, and a producer is interested in wildlife management, and they're in the prairie chicken range, this can be a very good program for them.”&nbsp;

Landowners may also receive help through the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), an erosion program to help balance commodities markets. While it was not originally planned with wildlife in mind, practices associated with CRP management impact wildlife habitats and thus parts of the program are wildlife driven. &nbsp;

“Anytime we're planting native grass in areas where it’s lacking, it improves habitat for wildlife over time,” Ricketts said. “The State Acres for Wildlife Enhancement is one part that's specifically wildlife-driven, and a lot of that is in center pivot irrigation systems where the corners are planted to native grass that are good for pheasant and quail.”&nbsp;

Help available to improve habitat for wildlife

“Kon'nichiwa.”&nbsp;That is hello in Japanese. Today, a shipment from the United States is arriving in Japan.It’s some samples of specialty, high quality pork produced by a family halfway around the globe in rural Kansas.&nbsp;

Kaden and Emily Roush are the owners of R Family Farms and a local grocery store in Lebanon, Kan. Kaden grew up in Lebanon on a crop and livestock farm. Five generations of his family have been involved in agriculture.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hog production was a major part of the Roush family operation until the hog market crash of the 1990s. As described by the family’s website: “However, out of the ashes sprang an opportunity for an energetic little boy, a few sows, and a 4-H project.”&nbsp;

Young Kaden Roush was that little boy.&nbsp;

Roush enrolled in the swine project in 4-H, raised pigs and showed them successfully at the county fair. Soon he was selling extra pigs to fellow 4-H members.&nbsp;

In the process, Roush developed a knack for livestock evaluation. He would develop and use those skills on the livestock judging teams at Allen Community College in Iola and then Kansas State University. The national judging team tours gave Roush the opportunity to observe diversity in agriculture and potential opportunities for marketing pork.&nbsp;

Roush soon met Emily. She was raised on a three-generation wheat, corn and soybean farm near the&nbsp;rural&nbsp;community of Iola, population 5,396 people. Now, that’s&nbsp;rural.&nbsp;

Emily was active in FFA. After studying at Allen Community College, she finished her degree in agronomy at K-State and married Kaden. He earned a degree in agribusiness with a major in animal science.&nbsp;

Together, Kaden and Emily’s families embody more than two centuries of history of caring for the land and animals.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kaden and Emily thought about the opportunities for niche marketing of pork and decided to move back to his home area to launch a specialty hog enterprise. They named it R Family Farms. The Roush website states about Emily: “Although pigs were not her first love (or second, for that matter), she quickly grew to love them and joyfully welcomed them as a part of her future.”&nbsp;

The Roush’s vision was to educate consumers about where their food comes from while providing a world-class culinary experience. To do so, they chose to raise the Berkshire breed of hogs.&nbsp;

In 2015, R Family Farms broke ground on a new hog facility. The first Berkshire pigs arrived in January 2016. Today, R Family Farms is home to 75 sows that farrow all year long. The resulting litters are raised to market weight.&nbsp;About half of the meat is sold by private label and half to vendors in Missouri. In 2019, they shipped samples to Japan.&nbsp;&nbsp;Meanwhile, Kaden works as a loan officer at a local bank and Emily serves as Lebanon city clerk.&nbsp;

The family needed a specific outlet for their specialty Berkshire pork. They were supplying pork to a national chain of organic whole food stores when the chain cancelled their contract. It appeared to be a disaster.&nbsp;

Then they were contacted by Paradise Locker Meats in Paradise, Mo. That company was selling Berkshire pork to high-end restaurants and suddenly found that their source could not supply it.&nbsp;

“It was divine intervention,” Emily said. “We lost our contract and he’d lost his supplier.&nbsp;&nbsp;He needed the number of hogs that we had.”&nbsp;

The Roush’s farm supplied the pork and Paradise Locker Meats filled the order. The two businesses have worked together ever since.&nbsp;

Today, R Family Farms is using old-style outdoor production practices combined with modern day technology to bring superior quality pork to market.&nbsp;
