Thursday marked a historic day in Kansas Wesleyan’s history, as the university announced it had surpassed the $4.5 million goal for its music campaign. With that, the planning process is officially underway for the renovation of Sams Chapel and the music departmental spaces. &nbsp;

“This is truly a special day,” said Matt Thompson, KWU president. “So many people have supported this project, and in doing so, supported Kansas Wesleyan’s future as a regional leader in the fine arts. We also recognize that this work will help both KWU students and the community, as it will once again make Sams Chapel a leading gathering space in the region. In short, this is a special day for both Kansas Wesleyan and the community of Salina.” &nbsp;

By exceeding the campaign’s goal, the pathway is clear to begin the long-anticipated renovation of KWU’s primary performance space. Sams Chapel, named for the parents of E.C. Sams, the then-president of JCPenney, was dedicated May 30, 1926, and has been the home of KWU music and theatre for the majority of the decades since. It has also hosted community events, graduation and commencement exercises, concerts, lectures and the crowning of the Lilac Queen. It remains the home of KWU Music and the university’s opening convocation, and its history is part of the efforts to recognize Pioneer Hall as a historic site. &nbsp;

"So many people, whether they are alumni, community members, students, staff or faculty, are invested in Sams Chapel," said Ken Oliver, KWU executive vice president of advancement and university operations. "It has been the heart and soul of our campus for nearly 100 years, and in the process, has hosted numerous community and regional events as well. Individual lives have been changed in that space, and to be entrusted with its renovation is a tremendous responsibility. Everyone can be certain that we will make sure Sams Chapel will stand as the soul of our campus not only for the next generation of Coyotes but for the generations that follow, as well."&nbsp;

The planned renovation will increase the stage space in Sams Chapel, provide new seating, improve the sound quality and create a chapel-specific entrance to Pioneer Hall, making it more attractive for concerts, speakers and other events. It will also thoroughly renovate existing music classrooms and practice spaces, improving the day-to-day academic experience. &nbsp;

The start date for the renovation has not yet been determined. In the interim, KWU will immediately launch a second phase of the music campaign, with a focus on improved scholarship opportunities, additional sound equipment, new lighting technology, improved instrumentation, and increased endowment funds. &nbsp;

“This moment is a credit to all who believe in the importance of the arts in higher education,” said Oliver. “This campaign improves our university and the opportunities our students have, and we will continue to fundraise to grow those opportunities even more. This tremendous support will, once again, turn Sams Chapel into a tremendous event space for our community. Thank you to all the supporters who helped us get here. We can’t wait to see the results!”&nbsp;

The music campaign is part of the second phase of The Power of AND Campaign, which is approaching its goal of $26 million. &nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Toyota Tundra driven by Travis Reiss, 44, Floresville, Texas, was northbound on U.S. 81.

The driver lost control on the ice. The pickup traveled into the median and struck an embankment

EMS transported a passenger, 17-year-old Elliana Reiss, Floresville, Texas, to North Central Kansas Medical Center.&nbsp; She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP. There were no other injuries.&nbsp;

Good Samaritans save downed goose in south Salina

Seeing a need, Steve Hanson took a chance and opened a music store. Fifty years later, S.M. Hanson Music is still going strong!

And, 50 years later, the music store at 335 S. Clark Street remains a Hanson family business, as Steve's son, Rick, now serves as CEO and president of the business.

The story about how the store got started varies a bit, depending on whether you talk with Steve or Rick.

"There was a need for it and I talked to enough musicians, that we decided we needed to open a music store and took a chance," Steve said.

Rick, however, provided a bit more insight about opening the store.

"The Christmas before the store opened, we ran out of room in the basement for the guitars, and all of the drum sets, and that stuff, because that's really where it started," Rick said. "We had product in the basement of our family home. And so the next Christmas, you know, it was like, 'well here's the plan.'"

Steve said they got a Small Business Administration loan and built the building on S. Clark Street.

"We did all the inside work in the building, built the walls and they've changed many times over the years," Steve said. "My partner at the time taught me how to frame walls, so that's what we did."

Steve said that his experience with guitars and his discussions with other musicians about what they needed were key to getting the business off the ground. Also, it was vital to secure a dealership from a company that would trust the new store to "do a good job with their product," he said.

"That was really hard to do because you're starting out and don't have a reputation at all," Steve said. "So we found a couple of companies that we could order from and started from there with kind of generic brands and then built into what Rick's put in today: Martin guitars and a lot of Fender and Gretsch."

"I think also, in the experience that he talks about, working at one of the other stores as an instructor for several years, seeing the lack of interest in that store supporting guitars and maybe a little bit of the rock and roll side of it because they focused on band instruments, I think that sort of drove some of the need also," Rick said. "So it's understanding the need or finding a niche where you can start plugging the hole."

When the store opened, Steve already had a network of guitar players. That network was heavily populated with his students.

"That helped build the business, of course," Steve said.

Additionally, Steve had been playing in bands himself and knew a number of musicians and their music needs.

Over the years, S.M. Hanson Music has served tens of thousands of people, according to Rick.

"Early on, it was local people and people from western Kansas. We were open on Tuesday and Thursday nights until 9, and there were many nights that Steve and Dean were still teaching come 9:30-10 o'clock, and I had customers in the store that were from Colby and Goodland and Norton. Those guys would get off work at 4:30 or 5 o'clock and drive in, so obviously, we're going to hang around and help them get what they need," Rick said.

Customers from throughout the region continue to drive in to shop at the store.

As bands traveling through heard about the store, business continued to pick up.

"Now that we ship stuff, and with the website, we're shipping stuff to both coasts on a pretty regular basis," Rick said. 

When the store opened, the focus was mainly on guitars, but over the years, the variety of products offered grew.

"Our main focus was guitars, electric and acoustic, and some banjos. We had some percussion, but it was mainly guitars," Steve said.

Rick said that when the store opened, synthesizers were just becoming popular, as were electronic pianos.

"Steve and one of the associates here, Don, went back to Boston to the ARP factory, and for a time, between St. Louis and Denver, this store in Salina, Kansas, was the only store that was an ARP synthesizer dealer. And we had two people that were factory trained," Rick said.

The business then grew into also selling sound systems.

Despite the increased variety of products over the years, guitars remain the most popular.

"As a department of instruments, it certainly is," Rick said. "There are some other areas, such as the big digital pianos, that have grown substantially. Back in the mid-80s, I sold the first piano lab to K-State University; a Yamaha teaching lab with all Clavinovas. Of course, we've done installations since early in the '70s, and that's been an up-and-down type of business, but at any point, one installation comes in and that's the biggest ticket for the month."

Through the years, starter guitar kits and beginner-level acoustic guitars have proved to be popular Christmas gifts purchased at S.M. Hanson Music.

"This time of the year, we'll have packages that are really aimed at giving that first-time student, whether it's a youth or young adult or adult a good chance of learning how to play," Rick said.

Ever the music teacher, Steve still gives guitar lessons, and both guitar and percussion lessons are offered through the store.

"This store still gives guitar lessons and percussion lessons. Dean Kranzler's (percussion) been here 50 years, 50 and a half years," Steve said.

Bass, banjo, and piano lessons also are offered.

Steve attributes his passion for guitars to the King of Rock and Roll and other performers of that era.

"I heard Elvis Presley. There were bands back then: Gene Vincent, Elvis, Bill Haley and the Comets, and I remember doing a band contest at what is now the Stiefel Theatre at that time. We were doing Bill Haley and that kind of music," Steve said. 

He also remembers going into a local establishment that had a jukebox and playing the same Carl Perkins song over and over.

While playing with a number of bands over the years, Steve now focuses his talents on playing at churches at Christmastime and at the Smoky Hill River Festival and its musical kick-off, Festival Jam.

"I still look forward to that for sure. Festival Jam that Rick and I created 36 years ago is the biggest showcase in the country. You can't help but love being backstage with 105 or 110 musicians that come in to play for Festival Jam."

S.M. Hanson Music: A family tradition for 50 years

Students, faculty, staff and administration at&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>&nbsp;helped contribute gifts to local families in the campus's first student-led Giving Tree project.&nbsp;

Students involved with K-State Salina's Student Governing Association helped create and lead the Giving Tree project, which raised more than $1,500 to put toward gifts for four different families of students who attend Sunset Elementary School in Salina. The gifts included everything from necessities—including towels, hats, gloves and cleaning supplies—to fun items for kids, such as toys, coloring books and crafts. Two K-State Salina students helped organize the project, with assistance from&nbsp;the Student Governing Association and a team effort from all parts of campus. Roxana Linares,&nbsp;junior,&nbsp;Arkansas City, and Charlie Kiehlbauch,&nbsp;sophomore,&nbsp;Fort Worth, Texas,&nbsp;both led and organized the campus's&nbsp;inaugural&nbsp;Giving Tree project. "We wanted to help the community in some way,"&nbsp;Linares said.&nbsp;"Charlie and&nbsp;I&nbsp;really have an interest in service to our community,&nbsp;and this was a great opportunity to help people have a little more holiday cheer." Kiehlbauch also credits the K-State Salina Student Governing Association's efforts in getting to be more involved with the Salina&nbsp;community. Thanks to this persistence, the school was able to build a relationship with the Sunset Parent-Teacher Organization, which&nbsp;notified the students of the opportunity. "I think the Giving Tree project went really well&nbsp;… our&nbsp;faculty and staff supported us,"&nbsp;said Kielbauch.&nbsp;"From giving gifts to donating money to wrapping, our campus had great buy-in. It means everything to me that our campus could achieve this to help the families." While other community service projects ask for the community's help, the Giving Tree&nbsp;project&nbsp;only relied on the K-State Salina campus to rally around the families. Only K-State Salina students, faculty, staff and administration pitched in to raise funds. Some&nbsp;even helped&nbsp;wrap&nbsp;gifts to ensure a true&nbsp;holiday feel for the families. "Students and staff have felt more of a responsibility to get involved and give back to the Salina community,"&nbsp;said Alysia Starkey, K-State Salina CEO and dean.&nbsp;"I'm proud of the response this student-led project invoked in members of our campus. This is a great example of how leadership is viewed at our campus: where it doesn't matter one's title; anybody can lead at any time.&nbsp;Thanks to the leadership showcased by our SGA, we were able to come through for local families." Recently, the K-State Salina campus has been involved with many aspects of community involvement, including a new on-campus community art appreciation&nbsp;mural,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/media/newsreleases/2022-07/birds-feather-mural71922.html" target="_blank">"Birds of a Feather,"</a>&nbsp;a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/media/newsreleases/2022-07/bots-united-way72822.html" target="_blank">community fundraiser</a>&nbsp;for the Salina Area United Way&nbsp;and a volunteering campaign for the campus's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/media/newsreleases/2022-08/fall-kickoff81722.html" target="_blank">annual Fall Kickoff</a>&nbsp;in August.

 </figure>K-State Salina Communications and MarketingStudents, faculty, staff and administration at&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>&nbsp;helped contribute gifts to local families in the campus's first student-led Giving Tree project.&nbsp;Students involved with K-State Salina's Student Governing Association helped create and lead the Giving Tree project, which raised more than $1,500 to put toward gifts for four different families of students who attend Sunset Elementary School in Salina. The gifts included everything from necessities—including towels, hats, gloves and cleaning supplies—to fun items for kids, such as toys, coloring books and crafts. Two K-State Salina students helped organize the project, with assistance from&nbsp;the Student Governing Association and a team effort from all parts of campus. Roxana Linares,&nbsp;junior,&nbsp;Arkansas City, and Charlie Kiehlbauch,&nbsp;sophomore,&nbsp;Fort Worth, Texas,&nbsp;both led and organized the campus's&nbsp;inaugural&nbsp;Giving Tree project. "We wanted to help the community in some way,"&nbsp;Linares said.&nbsp;"Charlie and&nbsp;I&nbsp;really have an interest in service to our community,&nbsp;and this was a great opportunity to help people have a little more holiday cheer." Kiehlbauch also credits the K-State Salina Student Governing Association's efforts in getting to be more involved with the Salina&nbsp;community. Thanks to this persistence, the school was able to build a relationship with the Sunset Parent-Teacher Organization, which&nbsp;notified the students of the opportunity. "I think the Giving Tree project went really well&nbsp;… our&nbsp;faculty and staff supported us,"&nbsp;said Kielbauch.&nbsp;"From giving gifts to donating money to wrapping, our campus had great buy-in. It means everything to me that our campus could achieve this to help the families." While other community service projects ask for the community's help, the Giving Tree&nbsp;project&nbsp;only relied on the K-State Salina campus to rally around the families. Only K-State Salina students, faculty, staff and administration pitched in to raise funds. Some&nbsp;even helped&nbsp;wrap&nbsp;gifts to ensure a true&nbsp;holiday feel for the families. "Students and staff have felt more of a responsibility to get involved and give back to the Salina community,"&nbsp;said Alysia Starkey, K-State Salina CEO and dean.&nbsp;"I'm proud of the response this student-led project invoked in members of our campus. This is a great example of how leadership is viewed at our campus: where it doesn't matter one's title; anybody can lead at any time.&nbsp;Thanks to the leadership showcased by our SGA, we were able to come through for local families." Recently, the K-State Salina campus has been involved with many aspects of community involvement, including a new on-campus community art appreciation&nbsp;mural,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/media/newsreleases/2022-07/birds-feather-mural71922.html" target="_blank">"Birds of a Feather,"</a>&nbsp;a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/media/newsreleases/2022-07/bots-united-way72822.html" target="_blank">community fundraiser</a>&nbsp;for the Salina Area United Way&nbsp;and a volunteering campaign for the campus's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/media/newsreleases/2022-08/fall-kickoff81722.html" target="_blank">annual Fall Kickoff</a>&nbsp;in August.

K-State Salina students lead Giving Tree project, donate gifts to 4 families

So, you’ve made a resolution to take control of your money this year—that’s amazing. A huge part of building new habits in any area of your life is just&nbsp;deciding&nbsp;you’re going to do it, so you’ve already gotten a big step out of the way. I know getting your finances in order can feel big and overwhelming, but we’re going to break it down in a way that’s simple and manageable. And one of the most important things you need as you get started on your financial journey in 2023 is . . . drumroll, please . . . a budget!

The word&nbsp;budget&nbsp;might kind of sound like a buzzkill if you’ve never done one before. If you’re on a budget, that means you can’t spend any money, right? Wrong! A budget actually gives you the freedom to spend because you’ve already decided ahead of time exactly how you’re going to use your money. Once you’ve set the boundaries, you give yourself permission to spend within those boundaries. And that means way less stress, guilt and confusion around money. What a relief.

Here are a few tips for doing a budget for the first time (and actually sticking to it).

A zero-based budget is one where your monthly take-home pay minus all your expenses equals zero. The point here is to give a job to every single dollar of your income. So, if you make $2,500 a month, every dollar you save or spend should add up to $2,500.

You’ll want to make your budget for the month before the month begins so you have a plan for how you’ll spend your money from day one. This is how it works:

●List your monthly income.&nbsp;This includes your regular paychecks and any other money you plan to bring in throughout the month.

●List your expenses.&nbsp;Think of everything you spend money on during the month. Start with giving (10% of your income), savings, the Four Walls (food, utilities, shelter and transportation) and other essentials like insurance and childcare. Then move on to other extras (like entertainment and restaurants) and month-specific expenses (like birthdays and holidays).

●Subtract your total expenses from your total income.&nbsp;The amount remaining should be zero—if it’s not, that just means something in your budget needs a little adjusting. If you have extra money left over, put that money toward paying off debt or add it to another category in your budget. If you wind up with a negative number, find a way to cut back on some expenses or generate more income by selling stuff or taking on a side hustle until your balance equals zero.

●Track your transactions.&nbsp;Don’t just plan out your budget and then forget about it. As you spend money throughout the month, make sure you keep track of how much you’re spending and where so you don’t overspend in any category.

And that’s it! I promise, it really is simple once you get the hang of it.

Speaking of simple, one of the best ways to make this whole process even simpler for yourself is to use a budgeting app. Of course, you can also use an excel spreadsheet or go old school by mapping out your budget on paper. I say sign me up for the method that involves the least amount of math. I’m a huge fan of apps like EveryDollar that do most of the math for you and connect with your bank so you can easily track your transactions.

Give yourself grace and don’t give up

Budgeting for the first time is a big deal. Be proud of yourself and know that it usually takes people about three months to really get the hang of it and make everything run smoothly.

Once you start budgeting regularly, you’ll see where you and your family might need to make some adjustments or sacrifices in certain categories in order to hit your financial goals. But at the end of the day, you’ll feel like you got a raise—because now, you have permission to spend in a way that’s controlled, wise and guilt-free. And that makes working toward those financial goals so much easier.

ABILENE - At 19 feet 10 ½ inches wide and 13 feet 11 ¼ inches tall (not including the frame),&nbsp; the World’s Largest Belt Buckle is now at home in Abilene. Unveiled Wednesday at noon at Eisenhower Park, the project serves as a billboard celebrating Abilene.

Designed by local artist, Jason Lahr, Fluter’s Creek Metal Works, the buckle features Dwight D. Eisenhower, Wild Bill Hickok, Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad, Historic Seelye Mansion, C.W. Parker carousel horse, C.L. Brown telephone, a racing Greyhound and Chisholm Trail longhorn inlaid with blue quartz.

The buckle is a project of the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau which hopes the new roadside attraction will entice travelers to stop and visit the Best Historic Small Town.

“Whether you enjoy Cowboy history, art, fun photo opportunities or the world’s largest things, make sure to add the World’s Largest Belt Buckle to your Kansas I-70 road trip,” said Julie Roller Weeks, Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau director.

The project is funded by a Kansas Tourism Attraction Development Grant and from donations from 100 businesses and individuals. The buckle garnered nationwide attention when Jefferson White, a.k.a. “Jimmy” from the hit tv show Yellowstone shared about the project.

Earlier this month,&nbsp;True West Magazine&nbsp;also named Abilene the recipient of its Readers’ Choice Best Promotion of a Historic Place award.

SALINE COUNTY—A Kansas man died in an accident just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Mazda Tribute driven by Sawyer B.&nbsp;Lysell-Alkire, 16, Lindsborg, was southbound on Interstate 135 at the Lindsborg exit. 

The SUV entered the west ditch, overturned and came to rest on its top.

A passenger, identified as 21-year-old Grant L.&nbsp;Lysell-Alkire, of Lindsborg, was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Christian's Funeral Home. EMS transported Sawyer&nbsp;Lysell-Alkire to Salina Regional Health Center. They were both properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The Salvation Army, located at 1137 N. Santa Fe, will be open during regular hours today. 

If you need somewhere warm to stay the night for you or your family, the Salvation Army will accept people until 10 p.m. For security reasons, doors will close at 10 p.m. and re-open at 7 a.m. on Thursday. Lunch and dinner will be served as usual.

Salina Grace, located at 304 W. Grand Ave., operates a Winter-Only Overnight Emergency Shelter.

This will be a REFERRAL ONLY night-by-night shelter, no programs, just a warm place to sleep at night during the winter.

Shelter Guests MUST check in between 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. only, unless escorted by a local law enforcement officer. All guests will leave in the morning and need to take all their belongings with them.

REFERRALS Referral can happen by phone or in person either at Salina Rescue Mission or Ashby House.

For men call the Salina Rescue Mission 823-2610 and ask for a shelter supervisor. For women and families, call Ashby House 826-4935.

PLEASE NOTE: Male registered sex or violent offenders will NOT be allowed check in at Salina Grace, they should be referred to the Salina Rescue Mission.

Women registered offenders will be referred on a case-by-case basis by Ashby House.

Persons on corrections outside of Saline County will not be permitted to stay at Salina Grace.

For many of us, the holiday season is a time for cheerful giving. But charity scammers ruin the mood by trying to cash in on your good will. If you’re supporting a charitable cause this winter, make a donation plan that includes spotting and avoiding scams.

Charitable giving goes up near the end of the year and scammers know it. Your year-end giving has the best chance of reaching the organizations you want to reach — and not scammers — when you:

●Check out a charity before you give.&nbsp;Most organizations use heart-warming messages to inspire you to give. But scammers might do that too. ●Don’t rush.&nbsp;Scammers pressure you to give right away. They don’t want you to have time to research their claims or think it through. Honest charities always need your donations — but they won’t rush you into donating immediately.

●Pay by credit card. It’s your safest bet.&nbsp;Scammers often ask you to wire money through companies like Western Union and Money Gram or buy gift cards. Or they might insist that you pay by cryptocurrency. If someone says it’s the&nbsp;only&nbsp;way for you to donate, you know it’s a scam.

City, county, library closing in observance of Christmas

A Salina man was arrested Monday afternoon after he allegedly threatened two women and a dog.

Officers were sent to a residence in the 600 block of Charles Street at noon on Monday for the report of a disturbance. They made contact with a 55-year-old woman who said Joseph Johnson, 35, of Salina, called her at work and told her he was inside her residence, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. Johnson was not supposed to be in the residence.

The woman returned home and she and a 45-year-old female neighbor entered the residence, where they found Johnson armed with a hammer and allegedly threatening to kill the woman's dog, Forrester said.

A physical altercation ensued. Johnson allegedly shoved both women to the ground and threatened them, Forrester said. When officers arrived, both women had exited the residence.

The woman who lives in the residence went back inside to get her dog and found Johnson armed with both a hammer and a crowbar, Forrester said. Johnson allegedly came at the woman, but she was able to escape from the house.

While in the residence, Johnson allegedly broke a four-foot-by-three-foot window and put two circular indentations in a kitchen countertop. Total damage was estimated at $650.

When officers entered the residence, they found Johnson in the kitchen with the hammer, Forrester said. Officers had to tase and pepper spray Johnson in order to take him into custody, he added.

Johnson was arrested on the following requested charges, according to Forrester.

●Felony interference with a law enforcement officer

●Three counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer

A light glaze of ice is possible Wednesday afternoon before snowfall begins later in the day. Total snow accumulations of one to three inches and ice accumulations of up to a couple of hundredths of an inch are possible. Wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph are expected.Plan on slippery road conditions. Blowing snow could also significantly reduce visibility...possibly below one-quarter of a mile at times Wednesday evening and night. These hazardous weather conditions will impact driving.Avoid outside activities if possible.
