Home Free plans holiday concert in Salina's Stiefel Theatre

ALLIANCE, Neb. - 37-year-old Ryan McElroy of Salina, Kan.,&nbsp; pleaded guilty to a motor vehicle homicide DUI, Class 2 Felony in Box Butte County District Court on Aug. 24.

McElroy will serve a minimum penalty of one-year imprisonment, with a maximum of 50 years. McElroy's charges of manslaughter (Class 2 Felony), DUI-third offense (Class W Misdemeanor), and reckless driving (Class 3 Misdemeanor) were dropped due to a plea agreement of pleading guilty to motor vehicle homicide.

On April 10, McElroy killed 22-year-old Blythe Boness of Alliance in a vehicle crash on Highway 2.

“At that time, the defendant, Ryan J. McElroy, was traveling eastbound on Highway 2 as driver and sole occupant of a red 2011 Chevrolet Camaro,” Deputy County Attorney Travis Rodak said. “At approximately mile marker 92.5 in Box Butte County, McElroy crossed the center line and began driving in the westbound lane of Highway 2. Boness made an evasive maneuver toward the north shoulder, and the defendant made an evasive maneuver to return to his lane, and struck Boness’ vehicle. Boness was killed as a result of the ensuing collision.”

McElroy was extracted from his vehicle by first responders and flown to Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff for treatment. His blood alcohol content was .235 grams per 100 ml of blood.

McElroy was previously convicted of a DUI in Gage County on June 12, 2008.

McElroy's sentencing is set for Nov. 7.&nbsp;

McElroy pleads guilty to motor vehicle homicide that killed Neb. woman

The Chronicle of Higher Education has ranked Salina Area Technical College in the top 2 percent of two-year colleges across the United States, based on its graduation rate.

The Chronicle’s annual Almanac is published each August, and compares thousands of colleges across the country each year on a wide variety of metrics. This is the fourth consecutive year Salina Tech has placed in the top 2 percent among two-year colleges; it placed second in 2019.

The Almanac compared the outcomes for students at two-year colleges who started school in 2017, and looked at their graduation rates after three years.

Of the 815 two-year colleges examined, Salina Tech ranked 15th, with a three-year graduation rate of 61.3 percent. Nationwide, the three-year graduation rate was 29.3 percent. Of the top 25 two-year colleges in the nation, three others are also in Kansas – North Central Kansas Technical College, Flint Hills Technical College and Northwest Kansas Technical College.

Salina Tech President Greg Nichols credited the college’s consistently high rankings to the work of faculty and staff in recent years.

“We’ve put systems in place to catch students when they first start to fall behind, and get them the help they need, before it becomes a major issue,” Nichols said. “That can include academic tutoring, but sometimes personal issues or even a temporary financial setback can make it difficult to focus on academics – and we can help with those issues.”

Nichols added that colleges are compared and ranked on lots of different metrics, but that graduation rates are among the most important. “Too many people around the country are spending time and money in college and ending up with nothing to show for it – we strive to make sure that doesn’t happen with our students.”

Police are investigating the theft of multiple items from a central Salina apartment earlier this week.

Rebecca McGary, 41, of Salina, who had been away from her apartment in the 600 block of S. Second Street for a couple of days, told police that when she returned on Thursday, she saw a person leaving her apartment, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The person was described as a shorter, skinny Black male with two- to three-inch dreadlocks and wearing red and black sweats. He left southbound on foot.

The door to McGary's apartment appeared to have been kicked in and the following items were known to be missing, Forrester said.

●A 65-inch Samsung television valued at $600

●A red and black Jordan hoodie valued at $100

Forrester said McGary was working to get a complete list of missing items to police.

Damage to the door was estimated at $50, he said.

McGary was booked into the Saline County Jail Tuesday afternoon on multiple theft and criminal use of a financial card charges, according to Saline County Jail booking information.

The owner of the store said he would take 15% off the price if we get a store credit card and pay for it that way. We are in pretty good financial shape, and can afford to pay cash for the furniture, but what do you think about the idea of taking advantage of the 15% off offer, then paying off the card immediately and closing the account?

Everyone thinks they’re the exception to the rule, or they’re somehow winning or getting rich by doing stuff like this. It doesn’t work that way. Your idea might sound good on the surface to a lot of folks, but the problem is the vast majority of those same people don’t have the discipline to follow through on a plan like this. Having that store account, even for a short period of time, would be too much of a temptation. Another issue is many places like this hit you with a fee when you pay off the card. They’ll fee you to death on other things, too, if you’re not careful, until you end up wishing you’d never even seen the place.

If it were me, I’d just talk to the owner again and let him know I’m taking my business elsewhere unless he discounts the furniture 15% on a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/cash-vs-credit-card" target="_blank">cash</a>&nbsp;purchase. There’s no way I’d take out a stupid credit card for a place like that whether I had the cash on hand or not!

McPherson police warn of scam claiming to include Farmer's State Bank

Police are looking for the driver of a blue vehicle involved in a hit-and-run collision late Wednesday afternoon in central Salina.

At approximately 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, a white GMC van that was legally parked 500 block of S. Eighth Street was struck, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

A witness saw an older blue station wagon-type vehicle leaving the scene. The collision left a blue streak along the driver's side, Forrester said.

The Stiefel Theatre Mike Finnigan School of Music wants to spread the joy of music to every willing learner in central Kansas. 

"Mike Finnigan was a great friend to the Stiefel. His musical collaborators are legendary: Jimi Hendrix, Bonnie Raitt, Crosby Stills &amp; Nash, Ringo Star and so many more. When he passed away his family chose to support music and the Stiefel in Mike’s name. This school is his legacy," the Stiefel Theatre noted in a news release. 

Music lessons are taught in a group format by local music teachers and leaders. Students range from age eight to adult. Classes last 50 minutes and are held at the Stiefel Theatre. During Sickle Cell Awareness Month in September, the American Red Cross emphasizes the importance of a diverse blood supply to help meet the needs of those with sickle cell disease – the most common inherited blood disorder in the U.S.

Sickle cell disease impacts more than 100,000 people across the country, most of whom are of African descent.&nbsp;Regular blood transfusions are critical to managing extreme pain and life-threatening complications faced by many. Unfortunately, they may develop an immune response against blood from donors that is not closely matched to their own. However, because most individuals who are Black have unique structures on their red blood cells that are not often found in other donor populations,&nbsp;1 in 3 African American blood donors is a match for people with sickle cell disease.

Life-threatening complications&nbsp;

Sickle cell disease distorts soft, round blood cells and turns them hard and crescent-shaped, which can cause severe pain. “When cells harden, they can get caught in blood vessels, potentially leading to stroke and organ failure,” Dr. Matthew Coleman, Red Cross Regional Medical Director. “Transfusions provide healthy blood cells, unblocking blood vessels and delivering oxygen, minimizing crises patients with sickle cell may face.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

To help ensure patients have the blood products they need, the American Red Cross is working with partners in the Black community to grow the number of blood donors who are Black through the sickle cell initiative, which launched in 2021.&nbsp;In the first year of the initiative, the number of first-time African American blood donors who gave with the Red Cross increased by 60%.&nbsp;In September and October, the Red Cross launches Joined by Blood, a fall component of the initiative where the Red Cross is teaming up with community organizations, like the National Pan-Hellenic Council and others, to host blood drives and inspire donors who are Black to give blood to support patients with sickle cell disease. SALINE COUNTY—A Salina man was injured in an accident just before 12:30p.m. Wednesday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway&nbsp; Patrol reported a 2005 Toyota Camry driven by Francisco M. Perez, 20, Salina, was eastbound on Kansas 140 four miles southwest of Bavaria.

The driver lost control of his vehicle. It started skidding, traveled off the south side of the highway, struck a culvert, vaulted onto the Union Pacific railroad tracks and came to rest.
