Dream Night at the Zoo is a unique event for children with terminal or chronic illnesses or disabilities from Saline County and surrounding communities. In this vein, Rolling Hills Zoo creates an environment where children with specific mental and physical health challenges feel more comfortable so that they can enjoy the zoo’s animals and special activities at their own pace in a fun yet safe setting.

Sponsored by the Salina Regional Health Foundation’s CHIP Grant and the McCune Foundation, this year’s Dream Night became a “come when you choose” event, giving the VIP children, ages preschool through 12th grade, and their parents the flexibility to come any day in September or October.

Upon their arrival, each VIP child redeemed their “golden ticket” for free admission to the zoo and wildlife museum along with admission for two adults. They also received a backpack filled with special Dream Night keepsakes, including a Rolling Hills Zoo photo frame for a favorite picture taken during their visit. In addition, each VIP child received $20 in Zoo Bucks to the Overlook Restaurant to spend on lunch or their favorite treats.

Along with visiting the zoo’s incredible wildlife, the children also enjoyed Animal Meet &amp; Greets, Keeper Encounters, the Wildlife Museum and a visit to the zoo’s new exhibit, The Pride of the Prairie. During their visit to the zoo, this year’s VIP children were able to set aside the realities of their physical condition and just enjoy being kids.

Rolling Hills Zoo's Dream Night program honors VIP children

No matter what your holiday plans look like, one thing most people can agree on is that giving is a huge part of the Christmas season. And it’s fun to think about our own wish lists, of course. But somehow, it’s even more fun to give and be extra generous during this special time. But here’s the thing: Generosity shouldn’t just be a priority at Christmas. What if we committed to being generous so often that it actually became a&nbsp;habit—something we naturally do all the time?

Growing up as Dave Ramsey’s daughter, my parents taught me the importance of giving from a very early age. In fact, one of my favorite memories from my middle school years (and trust me, there were many—I’m a 90s kid) is the time my dad gave me a unique opportunity to participate in outrageous generosity. My sister, Denise, and I were watching TV one Saturday morning when my dad came in and said, “All right, girls! You’re going to do something a little different today.”

He then handed each of us a massive envelope full of cash and said Denise and I were going to take two teenage girls shopping. He explained that he’d already made a phone call to a local outreach program and set it up. I wish I could say we were instantly on board and ready to serve, but that was&nbsp;not&nbsp;the case. I mean, we were teenagers after all, and we didn’t even know these girls! Honestly, it sounded kind of awkward.

We jumped in the car anyway and headed to pick up our shopping buddies for the day. Once we got to the mall, we pulled fun pieces for them to try on, swapped out sizes while they were in the fitting rooms, and had so much fun. It felt like we were in our own episode of an early 2000s makeover show.

Eventually, we made it to the cash register. As we handed the employee our wads of cash to pay for their items, one of the girls started crying. I’ll never forget that moment. She looked at us through tears and said, “I just can’t believe this is my life right now. I don’t know how I’ll ever thank you.”

Looking back, that experience was super formational for me as a 13-year-old kid. At the time, I remember feeling pretty out of my comfort zone, but I’m thankful my parents gently pushed me to do something new because it ultimately laid the foundation for a lifelong love of giving. And today, I can honestly say that giving is one of the main reasons I choose to live a debt-free lifestyle. Generosity motivates me to be smart with my money so that I have more to bless others with.

And you know what else? This act of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/budgeting/importance-of-giving-back" target="_blank">generosity</a>&nbsp;helped us grow closer as a family because it was a team effort! My parents gave up something they had (money), and Denise and I gave up something we had (time). Not only did I get to share quality time with my older sister and our new friends, but I also got to practice being a good steward of resources that were never mine to begin with. And isn’t that what generosity is really about? Not just during the holidays, but&nbsp;all&nbsp;the time.

I hope this little memory inspires you this holiday season. But what I really want is for you to take the spirit of giving into the new year and beyond.

And don’t forget, money isn’t the only thing you have to offer! You can give your time, talents, possessions and so much more to make someone’s load a little lighter. Here are three steps to help you make generosity a habit all year.

●Make a commitment.&nbsp;Decide that you’re ready to get serious about making some sacrifices and invite people in your life to partner with you.

●Do some brainstorming.&nbsp;Make a list of non-money “gifts” you can be generous with, like a professional skill that can serve someone else or a knack for hosting and hospitality.

●Balance your budget.&nbsp;Create a realistic margin in your monthly budget so you have the funds to fuel your giving habits.

The practice of giving takes intentional thought and preparation, so start with these simple steps today. And hear my heart on this: You don’t have to immediately start giving away huge envelopes of money like my dad did, but I hope you choose to believe that generosity is possible at any income level.

One year ago: Former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin pleaded guilty to a federal charge of violating George Floyd's civil rights, admitting for the first time that he held his knee across Floyd's neck and kept it there even after Floyd became unresponsive, resulting in the Black man's death. SRHC’s annual Nursing Celebration fast approaching!

TOPEKA—The Kansas Supreme Court is accepting public comment on a proposed rule that would require municipal courts to provide information and submit reports to either the Supreme Court or the judicial administrator.

<a href="https://kansascourts.org/l/aRfacJO_mnzN33CUuZqtJ-9w1xvCWxupcglwZIhBhnQ" target="_blank">Proposed Rule 1203</a>&nbsp;identifies areas of responsibility and grants the judicial administrator authority to establish the manner and form for reports from municipal courts.

The proposed rule would replace an existing Supreme Court order regarding reporting.

Public comment on the new rule may be made by email to&nbsp;<a href="mailto:publiccomments@kscourts.org?subject=Rule%201203&amp;body=undefined" target="_blank">publiccomments@kscourts.org</a>&nbsp;until noon Saturday, January 14. The subject line must read “Rule 1203.”

Shalimar Shepherds this weekend; Georgetown Santas next week

MCPHERSON –&nbsp;McPherson College has announced the creation of an endowed scholarship fund for students pursuing a degree in automotive restoration. The Rob Walton Scholarship Fund will focus on attracting and retaining the best students in the college’s unique automotive restoration program.

The $1 million gift from the Rob and Melani Walton Foundation will be supplemented by the two-for-one donor match announced by the college in November, resulting in $3 million for the McPherson College endowment. The anonymous double-match estate commitment of $500 million is the largest in the history of any liberal arts college in the United States.

“This grant helps us fulfill our mission of being the center of excellence for students serious about automotive restoration,” said McPherson College President Michael Schneider. “Students completing their degree from our program are the skilled craftsmen, technicians, historians, curators, managers, marketing and communication persons, and leaders necessary to preserve the classic car industry.”

The Waltons join the former host of The Tonight Show and car enthusiast Jay Leno in providing student scholarships for the program and continues the significant contributions toward the $500 million match recently announced by McPherson College.

“Driving and collecting vintage automobiles is a personal passion,” said Rob Walton. “We’re pleased to contribute to educating the next generation of car restorers and making college more affordable for McPherson students.”

The McPherson College automotive restoration program combines a liberal arts approach with hands-on craftsmanship that prepares students to be successful in a broad range of careers in the automotive industry. Graduates of the nation’s only accredited four-year bachelor’s degree program in automotive restoration go on to work for the biggest names in the automotive industry. Current students are restoring a 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300 S Cabriolet that will be entered in the renowned Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2023. The program has attracted the attention of industry leaders and car enthusiasts such as Richard Lundquist, who donated a 1972 Ferrari 365GTB/4 Daytona to the program.

Beyond offering one-of-a-kind educational opportunities, McPherson College is committed to helping students graduate with little to zero student debt. Its Student Debt Project utilizes financial literacy, mentoring, and matching funds to assist students working while attending college. So far, students in the program have reduced their projected debt at graduation by $12,000. Scholarships, like the Rob Walton Scholarship Fund, work in tandem with the Student Debt Project to help minimize the need for student and family educational loans.

To date, the college has raised more than $130 million of the $250 million needed to secure the $500 million match, including a $50 million commitment from Californian philanthropists Melanie and Richard Lundquist. Justin Moore to perform in Salina in March; tickets on sale Friday

A Salina man was cited after he allegedly made hostile demonstrations with a weapon at two locations in the city in a matter of minutes.

The first incident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. Tuesday on the north side of the Salina Police Department where an officer was preparing her vehicle for her shift, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

While the officer was preparing her vehicle along W. Elm Street, a silver Toyota Corolla drove westbound on W. Elm Street. As the vehicle passed the officer, the driver activated what appeared to be a taser-like device, Forrester said. The officer could see arcing between two posts on what appeared to be a cellphone case.

When the car reached N. 11th Street, it turned around and drove past the officer again. The driver again caused the device to arc so that the officer could see it, Forrester said.

A few minutes later, an employee of 1st Choice Security at Salina Regional Health Center, 400 S. Santa Fe Avenue, reported the same car driving by northbound on S. Santa Fe Avenue. The vehicle made a u-turn in front of the hospital and headed southbound. Shortly after, the car again drove northbound past Salina Regional. Again, the driver activated the taser device.

The security guard saw the car stop at the stop light at South Street. The driver appeared to brandish the taser device at another driver, Forrester said. A short time later, the car headed southbound on S. Santa Fe Avenue, and the driver appeared to brandish the taser device at the security guard and a hospital employee in the crosswalk.

Forrester said the security guard was able to get the license plate number from the car. Police traced the vehicle to a residence in the 1300 block of Springfield Street in southwest Salina. There they made contact with Sean Talbot, 37, of Salina. The conducted energy weapon he allegedly brandished was a cellphone case made to work like a taser, Forrester said.

Talbot was cited for two counts of hostile demonstration with a weapon, Forrester said.

For weeks the Christmas Spirit grows with every decoration hung, carol sung and sweet treat consumed. The ultimate height of anticipation, especially for children is drafting a wish list for Santa. I vividly remember the anticipation that came each year of my childhood with the arrival of the JC Penny “Wish Book.” My brother and I spent hours examining every page and letting our imaginations run wild with just how cool and glamorous our lives would be with each toy. By the time we were done that poor book was marked and highlighted with so many circles even Santa couldn’t figure out what we wanted. There is a sad nostalgia for me in knowing “Wish Books” have faded away. Children today really don’t understand what they are missing. That is one of the beautiful things about children, they can manifest anticipation, imagination and joy just about everywhere they look. It rarely matters the cost of quality of the gift, in their mind the cheapest items can be great treasures and expensive gifts may not be any better at holding attention any longer. Children are quick to joy, imagination and seeing the possibility in all things.&nbsp; At some point though our ideas about gifts change. Teenage desires are fueled by the coolest brands and newest electronics, but as most of the world can’t really understand them you are almost better giving them a gift card. In our early adult years, our desires move to more practical things motivated by the gaps in our lives left by the new world of adulting. I remember when I was first out of college asking for exciting things like new tires for my car, a vacuum cleaner and a whole list of kitchen appliances. At some point in the last decade, I reached the point where I have everything I need to be happy. Gifts stopped being a source of anticipation, and a wish list became more a chore than a dream. My anticipation at the holidays has shifted from dreaming about what I want to give. Giving has become a source of great joy for me. My anticipation builds each year while I search and puzzle over gifts that will make my loved ones light up with joy. It isn’t always easy, we all have that one person who wants things that are completely unrealistic like a time-travel machine, world peace or a new sports car. The best gifts are rarely expensive or trendy, they are usually practical and may seem a bit strange to anyone but the recipient. However, they show your loved ones how much you listen to them and want them to be happy. Great gifts feel so good because it is like being told, “I like you exactly as you are.” None of the items on my Christmas list will make or break my holiday season. I make my list so my loved ones can have the joy of getting me something that shows their love, even though I really only care about spending time together. As you finish your holiday shopping this year don’t stress over the perfect gift, remember it really doesn’t matter if you buy them a smart phone, muck boots or a nice dinner together. The true joy of the season will come from participating in traditions, making memories and knowing how blessed we are to be together with people we love.

Today in History - December 14

Salina Public Schools (SPS) conducted a community phone survey in October 2022. The statistically reliable sample size included 300 randomly selected adults who were head of household and balanced by geographic location.

Participants had the opportunity to provide feedback about district services, identify district strengths and areas for improvement, share concerns, rate the relevance of district goals and more. The community survey, administered by ExcellenceK12, a Kansas City-based market research firm, helped the district better understand community members’ perceptions of SPS. 

“Salina Public Schools belongs to the community,” said Linn Exline, superintendent at USD 305. “Feedback about the goals, priorities and community concerns help keep the district aligned with community expectations.”

Results were shared at the Tuesday Board of Education meeting. Rick Nobles, president of ExcellenceK12, told board members that overall, the data revealed some terrific scores on the grading questions. Areas that received the highest scores were:

●Preparation of students for college, career/technical training or employment. 

●District’s efforts to communicate with patrons. 

●Value received for the tax dollars spent

Additionally, teachers topped the list of strengths based on an open-ended question. 

“We are incredibly proud of our teachers’ caring, expert and professional work with students,” said Exline.

The survey asked about the relevancy of the three long-term goals that are a part of the Strategic Plan, adopted in 2020. Derived from community input during strategic planning sessions, the goals aim to build students’ skills:

●Critical thinking (math, science, social studies). 

●Communication (reading, writing, listening, speaking). 

Ninety-nine percent of the phone survey participants considered the goals to be very relevant or somewhat relevant.

Other results included participants’ view of SPS as a workplace. Eighty-four percent indicated it was an excellent or good place to work. When asked what participants would like to hear more about from the school, top answers were:

Survey results are being incorporated into district plans. A school safety information campaign has launched, including a series of videos hosted by Exline. Work on the Strategic Plan goals continues with implementation of Project Based Learning, a strategy to harness the power of classroom teaching to meet the three learning goals. In 2023, measures will be in place to monitor student performance and growth toward the goals.

“We are grateful to everyone who took the time to participate,” added Exline. “Our schools are a fine example of community partnerships in Salina. Together, we make SPS a great place to learn and work.”

Survey reveals awareness of USD 305 initiatives, support for work being done

Twenty-five law enforcement officers graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on Friday in a ceremony held in KLETC’s Integrity Auditorium.

In addressing the students, commencement speaker Emporia Police Department Chief Ed Owens said they’ve been called upon to be stewards of their community.&nbsp; “Each and every day, uniform or not, serve your communities with pride and dedication.”

Class President Caitlin Waits with the Haysville Police Department reflected upon the academy experience and how it was unique to each individual, with one constant theme.&nbsp; "Before I came to KLETC, I was told the academy is what you make of it.&nbsp; I believe that word of advice from my co-workers rings true for everyone on this stage.”&nbsp; Waits went on to say that throughout the 14 weeks in basic training the class learned together, struggled together, and grew together.&nbsp;

Under the authority of Executive Director Darin Beck, graduates received certificates attesting to the satisfactory completion of a full-time basic course of instruction, and certification as Kansas law enforcement officers from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority.
