The event is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. Oct. 8 in downtown Salina.

"The SaWINEa Downtown Wine Walk invites you to explore the many flavors of seven Kansas wineries (and two local breweries) as you experience the friendly ambience that our downtown boutiques have to offer. You will also get a front row look at the new murals being painted downtown during BOOM!" Salina Downtown, Inc., noted in a news release.

Each participant will plan their downtown adventure, stopping at participating downtown businesses while tasting a sampling of Kansas wines and brews. There also will be water and snack stops along the route, according to Salina Downtown, Inc.

Additionally, live entertainment is planned. Jaron Bell is scheduled to perform at the N. Santa Fe Avenue/W. Ash Street stage and The Blades are scheduled to perform at the Campbell Plaza stage.

Salina Downtown, Inc., noted that there will be two ticket levels this year.

VIP tickets are $60 per person and come with a commemorative stainless steel wine tumbler, wristband, and early entry to the walk, as well as other perks including a VIP only happy hour at Prickly Pear.

General admission tickets are $35 and will come with a wine tasting glass.

It's almost time for the Salina Regional Health Center Service Auxiliary's Fall Rummage Sale.

The event is scheduled for Sept. 16-19 in the 4-H Building at Salina's Kenwood Park. Rummage sale times are: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 16-17; 1-5 p.m. Sept. 18; and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 19.

Each fall, the auxiliary has a rummage sale to raise funds for a variety of projects, including the Rebecca Morrison House, the Salina Regional Health Foundation's Community Health Investment Program, and scholarships for students in health-related fields of study, according to information from the auxiliary.

Donations of items to the rummage sale may be made from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 14-15 at the back door of the 4-H Building. No donations of items can be made the days of the rummage sale, the auxiliary noted in a news release.

"We are also seeking plastic grocery bag, large paper grocery bags and the 'pick-up' bags used at the grocery stores," the auxiliary added.

Additionally, volunteers are needed to help set up and on the days of the rummage sale. Persons interested in volunteering should contact Karen Morgan at 910-689-4395 to schedule a time to help.

Salina Regional Health Center Service Auxiliary Fall Rummage Sale Sept. 16-19

Kansas Wesleyan has announced its 2022-23 schedule for music and theatre performances, a slate that will include two music festivals and a collaboration with Theatre Salina during the spring semester.

There will be no charge for any KWU concert or on-campus play this year.

The schedule opens Sept. 30, when the Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble perform at 7 p.m. The fall play is next on the agenda, as KWU Theatre performs “The 39 Steps” Oct. 21–23 during&nbsp;Homecoming and Family Weekend. There will be no charge for tickets for any of the three performances. However,&nbsp;<a href="https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=HqOyoDhMXUmUvm14-AHv1xDTEzYccm1Hnx5djyaqtCJUQ1QyQzZWNFo2Q0ZHWkY4QVkyQ1VDTDdZRi4u&amp;web=1&amp;wdLOR=c5FFAC5DF-1116-A149-9DBC-0C75D6BCB58D" target="_blank">reserving tickets</a>&nbsp;through the university’s fine arts department is strongly encouraged.

One of the landmark events of the KWU year follows, as Christmas by Candlelight will be held Dec. 4 at 5 p.m. No tickets will be required. This year’s show will, officially, be the 40th&nbsp;anniversary of the annual KWU Christmas concert, as the name Christmas by Candlelight originated in 1982. The show’s theme and performing high schools will be announced at a later date.

Another Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble performance (Dec. 6, 7 p.m.) wraps up the fall semester schedule. Music returns to the stage Feb. 9 for the second annual Salina Strings Day. Master classes and performances, including guest artists Adele and Derek Stein, will take place throughout the day, all leading to a group concert that evening at the KDOT Auditorium.

The KWU choral groups – the Philharmonic Choir and Wesleyan Chorale – are scheduled to perform Feb. 19 at 2 p.m., and the wind ensemble, orchestra and strings groups will take the stage March 2 at 7 p.m.

The first of two spring festivals – KWU Jazz Fest – will take place March 20–22, and from March 31–April 16, the spring musical, “Something’s Rotten,” will run in collaboration with Theatre Salina. Tickets can be procured through Theatre Salina.

The KWU choirs will host a concert April 13 (7 p.m.), followed by a final Jazz Ensemble, Orchestra and Wind Ensemble performance April 27 at the same time. The annual Pops Concert wraps up the 2022-23 schedule May 5 at 7 p.m. in the Student Activities Center.

All music performances – other than Salina Strings Day and the Pops Concert – will be held in Sams Chapel and are scheduled to be streamed live and free of charge on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCT2D4tSne6si4k5qLE1pvHA" target="_blank">KWU Student Media YouTube page</a>. The fall play will take place in Fitzpatrick Auditorium and a decision on streaming will be announced closer to the performance date.

Kansas Wesleyan announces 2022-23 music, theatre schedule

UPDATE 10 a.m. Wednesday: A second earthquake rattled part of southeastern Saline County Tuesday night. This time it was a bit east-southeast of the first quake of the day.

A 2.1 magnitude quake struck at 9:25 p.m. Tuesday southwest of Gypsum, according to the Kansas Geological Survey. It was centered just west of S. Niles Road between E. Hedberg Road and E. Assaria Road.

ASSARIA - A minor earthquake shook part of southeastern Saline County late this afternoon.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.2 magnitude quake struck at 5:43 p.m. Tuesday east of Assaria. It was centered just north of Assaria Road between S. Woodward Road and S. Simpson Road.

Gridiron Glory kicks off Thursday night! Are you ready?

By GLENN BRUNKOW Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher Tuesday I was hauling hay; it was my fifth or sixth load of the day, and I had been hauling hay for the better part of a week. It was probably all too routine. I was making the left-hand turn off of the highway onto the county road. I looked back in my rearview mirror and did not see anyone before I started to turn. That was when I saw the Subaru had decided to pass me at that very point. Thankfully, nothing more happened than the driver squealing their brakes and shaking their fist at me, but it could have been much worse. Over the past couple of months, I have had a couple of friends who have had worse experiences sharing the highways with other motorists. Thankfully, none of them were seriously hurt, but the damage to farm equipment was not something they had planned to deal with, I am sure. Let me be the first to say I was not without fault. Upon inspection, I learned my left-turn signal was not working. However, if I remember my driver’s ed classes right, it is not permissible to pass on a double yellow line or at an intersection. Along with that, following so close to a trailer that the driver in front of you cannot see you is not good either. My point is all drivers need to share the road, and those roads are starting to get even more crowded with slow moving ag equipment as harvest starts. As ag producers we need to make sure our equipment has working lights and turn signals. We need to be aware of who is around us on the roads and have a plan of action that assumes other drivers will not do the right thing. If at all possible, move equipment at times when the road is less crowded. If you are driving during harvest, please, give the equipment plenty of room. Stay far enough back to see the rearview mirrors of the vehicle ahead of you because that will mean they can also see you. Farm equipment moves slowly so take that into account as you approach. You will close the gap much faster than you may realize. Please, never pass near an intersection, many times our turn signals don’t work. Yes, farm equipment will slow your drive down, again, please take a deep breath. Don’t be in such a rush that you pass in a bad place or at the wrong time. That farmer is growing the food you are rushing home to put on your table. I got lucky, and I am using that fortunate moment as a reminder to be more vigilant when I am on the road. It only takes a second, a blink for things to go bad. Take the time to slow down, make the right decisions and be courteous. We are all in this together, we have to share the same road, let’s all be safe and make sure we make it home.

TOPEKA – Jobs for America’s Graduates-Kansas (JAG-K) has added 23 new programs for the 2022-2023 school year, bringing its number to 104 programs in 48 school districts across the state.

The new program locations include Minneapolis. See the full list of new program locations below.

JAG-K is a multi-year, in-school program for students in grades 6-12 that offers tools to successfully transition students into post-secondary school, the military, or directly into the workforce with marketable skills. Participants in the program face multiple barriers to success that their JAG-K Career Specialist helps them overcome through a nationally-accredited, evidence-based model.

JAG-K helps students prepare for post-secondary education and employment opportunities. JAG-K programs across the state reported a graduation rate of 95 percent for the Class of 2021. That total exceeded the state of Kansas’ total graduation rate of 88 percent.

JAG-K recorded a full-time positive outcomes rate of 86 percent, which means that a number of 2021 graduates are either in post-secondary education, military service or in the workforce full-time one year after graduation. Seventy-two percent of graduates of 2021 are employed, with 84 percent of those reporting they are working full time.

This fall, JAG-K opened programs in five communities in which it previously had no presence, while it also increased its number of programs in urban areas like Wichita, Kansas City, Topeka and Junction City. The program anticipates serving approximately 5,500 students in the 2022-2023 school year, an increase of about 1,200 students.

“We are excited to add 23 new programs this year, because it allows us to help more students achieve successful futures,” said JAG-K President and CEO Chuck Knapp. “JAG-K career specialists have been helping students prepare for post-secondary success for more than nine years, and that record of positive outcomes has earned us widespread support.

“Gov. Laura Kelly and the Kansas Legislature appropriated additional funding for our program in the 2023 fiscal year state budget, and we have also benefitted from increased support from corporate and private sources. These diverse streams of financial support are allowing us to keep up with increased costs and simultaneously grow and impact more students.”

Of the 40 states that have offered Jobs for America’s Graduates Programs over the past 40 years, the Kansas affiliate is the fastest to establish 100 programs. JAG-K is celebrating its tenth year this school year.

JAG-K programs are now in 86 multi-year high schools and 13 middle schools. JAG-K also has five alternate education programs and five "transition" programs dedicated to serving students in foster care.

The 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization is a state affiliate of the national JAG program network which operates in 40 different states and territories. It is primarily funded through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families block grant to the State of Kansas administered by the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF). In addition to school districts and DCF, JAG-K partners with the Kansas Department of Education. KDOT: Contests aim to Put the Brakes on Fatalities

A Salina teen was transported to Salina Regional Health Center after a two-vehicle wreck Saturday evening in the western part of the city.

A 16-year-old boy in a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado was stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of W. Republic Avenue and Cherokee Drive when he pulled out and struck a 2000 Toyota Camry that was already in the intersection, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The Camry was driven by Mikal Terrell, 29, of Salina.

The wreck occurred just after 6 p.m. Saturday.

The boy complained of pelvic and leg pain and was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, Forrester said.

The Silverado sustained front-end damage. The Camry sustained passenger-side damage and had to be towed from the scene, Forrester said.

The teen was cited for violation of restrictions and inattentive driving and Terrell was cited for no proof of insurance and driving on a suspended license, Forrester said.

1 driver injured, both cited in west Salina wreck Saturday evening

Local man arrested after incident at east Salina Kwik Shop

A Crimestoppers tip led police to a Salina man with multiple active warrants Friday evening.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of N. Seventh Street at approximately 7:25 p.m. Friday. A Crimestoppers tip had reported that Corry Barnes, 20, of Salina, who was on the Saline County Most Wanted List, was there and loading items into a vehicle.

When officers arrived in the area, they observed a white and green Buick Century known to belong to Barnes' girlfriend pull into Rod's No. 2, 1339 N. Ninth Street, and observed Barnes inside the vehicle, Forrester said. An officer initiated a traffic stop and Barnes ran from the car, leading police on a foot chase for several blocks, Forrester said.

Barnes was apprehended in the 1200 block of N. 10th Street.

Barnes was arrested on the following active warrants, Forrester said.

●Flee and elude, Saline County District Court

●Failure to appear, Salina Municipal Court

●Failure to appear, Dickinson County District Court

Additionally, Barnes was arrested on a requested charge of felony interference with a law enforcement officer, Forrester said.

K-State Salina's new Great Plains Manufacturing Scholars Program provides learning opportunities in basic manufacturing, advanced manufacturing, advanced robotics programming and engineering design. The program is designed for students earning a bachelor's degree in engineering technology programs at the K-State Salina campus. Each participating scholar will receive an annual scholarship of up to $9,900 per year, covering 85% or more of the in-state tuition rate. With year-round course options, freshmen students earn their degree in three years while working up to 20 hours per week at Great Plains Manufacturing. ABILENE - Employees of Memorial Health System (MHS) in Abilene wore blue jeans at work for another Jeans Day fundraiser on Fridays throughout the month of August. 

Employees make a donation, of at least $5, and are allowed to wear blue jeans at work. For August, a total donation of $1,155 was presented to Tori Murphy, organizer of Derrik’s Ride. To date, this is the largest donation made for Jeans Day by the employees of MHS. 

Derrik’s Ride is an event to help in the fight against childhood cancer, which features a poker run, bike show, dinner, auction, live band, and more. This year’s event, to be held in Old Abilene Town, is Sept. 17. For more information, search “Derrik’s Ride” on Facebook or call 785-280-3178.
